PreparationforAssembly
Professionals utilizing premiumUltracote covering carefullycovered your model.Due to climatechanges
during shipping, themodels covering mayhave loosened and/orwinkled. It's agood habit togo over your
model with acovering iron toensure all joints,seams, and edgesare properly sealed.
Ultracote is atemperature sensitive filmthat seals andshrinks at lowertemperatures. Make sureyou set your
iron on alow temperature initiallyto get afeel for thecorrect temperature settingand adjust accordingly.
Higher temperatures willcause your coveringto over shrinkand distort.Also, use asock over youriron to
ensure a scratchfree finish.
Place an to ensure task completion:
1. Go over you model as necessary with a covering iron to insure all joints, seams, and corners are
sealed properly (figure1).
2. Use your iron to ensure the areas where cutouts are needed for your hardware are located and sealed
down, such as servos; tubes, and control horn mounting locations (figure 2).
Next, we ll need to cut out the covering at the locations for hardware and final assembly. Make sure you use a
sharp hobby knife so your cuts will be clean and straight.
3. Start with the fuselage, Locate and cut out the servo and stabilizer and wing tube locations (figure 3).
4. Locate and cut the location for the anti-rotation pins and mounting holes for the stabilizers and wings
(figure3 and 4).
5. Locate and cut the two mounting bolt locations for the canopy and the two pull-pull exits (figure 3
and4).
6. Locate and cut the servo mounting location for each wing half (figure5).

Now that we re ready for assembly, we are going to start with the main landing gear first. You will need to
locate the following parts to begin assembly.

Not Provided:
1. Fasten the axles to the main landing gear with the lock nuts. Use care when tightening the lock nuts.
If over tightened it can damage the composite landing gear and cause it to fail. Only tighten enough to
lock the axle firmly in place and not rotate. Loc-tite is not
recommended here, as it will damage the nylon bushing (figure 6).
2. Slide one wheel collar or a 8mm piece of fuel tubing to the inside
of each axle. This acts as a spacer preventing the wheels from
moving side-to-side and making contact against the inside of the
wheel pants (figure 6).
3. Slide one wheel on each axle and fasten an additional wheel
collar. Place the collars as close to the wheels as possible but ensure
the wheels still rotate freely.Again, we don t want the wheel to
move from side to side and contact the wheel pants. Also, we
recommend the use of loc-tite on the setscrews of the wheel collars
to prevent them from vibrating loose (figure 6).

4. Install the landing gear to the fuselage using the four 8/32 x /
bolts, spring washers, and flat washers. Loc-tite here is
recommended (figure7).
Tip#1Finish the end of the axle with 3mm of extra fuel tubing as added protection of wheel loss if collar
loosens during operation.

1. Use a Dremel or suitable device and
trim the center wheel opening on the
wheel pants on the side with the wood-
mounting block. Trim the center of the
wheel pants to fit the axle heads using
the wood block as guide (figure 8 and
9).
2. Raise the rear of the fuselage until the
model is level and block it in place. You
can use the cowling to block the fuselage
in a level position (figure 10).
3. Hold one wheel pant in place while
keeping the bottom of the wheel opening
level with your work surface and mark
your hole locations through the
mounting holes in the landing gear.
Repeat this step for the other side
(figure 11).
4. Drill the holes for the 4/40 bolts in the
,
wheel pants at the locations you ve
marked.
5. Apply some white wood glue to the
inner side of the four 4/40 blind nuts and
install the blind nuts to the inside of the
wheel pants (figure 14 and 15).
6. Mount the wheel pants to the landing

gear using four 4/40 x / bolts with
spring and flat washers. Use loc-tite on
these bolts, they are prone to severe
vibration (figure 16 and 17).

7. Install tail wheel to the bracket using one washer on each side of
the brass bushing and install the small wheel collar. Use blue Loc-
tite on the setscrew of the wheel collars(figure 18).
8. Place a piece of low tack masking tape over the tail wheel bracket-
mounting block. Mark the centerline over the tape on the tail wheel
bracket-mounting block (figure 19).
9. Place the tail wheel bracket on the mounting block ensuring the
bracket holes line up with the centerline and mark the hole locations for the two large wood screws
(figure 20).
10. Once your locations are marked, drill two small pilot holes for the wood screws(figure 21).
11. Mount the tail wheel-bracket to the fuselage usingthe two large wood screws. Remove the bracket
and coat the threads created in the wood-mounting block with thin CAand re-assemble (figure 22, 23,
and 24).

12. Install the steel tiller horn just behind the hinge line on the bottom of the rudder using the two small
wood screws (figure 25, 26, and 27).
Set aside your two tiller springs, we will install those later after the rudder is mounted.
Chapter4
CanopyHatchand Cowling

1. Install the hatch on the fuselage using four 4/40 bolts with spring
and flat washers provided (figure28).
2. Trial fit the canopy to the fuselage access hatch to determine screw
locations.
3. Mark evenly spaced locations for the screws using at least six per
side. Also mark three evenly space locations around the front of the
canopy. Doublc chcck to cnsurc all thc marked scrcw locations will
go into the center of the hatch rail (figure29).
4. Remove canopy from the access hatch and drill the marked
locations for the canopy screws.

5. Install the canopy using the small wood screws.If satisfied with the fit,remove the canopy and hatch
and wick a small amount of thin CAinto each of the screws holes on the hatch.Once dried, reinstall
canopy with optional canopy glue if desired.Caution! CA will fog the canopy if installedbefore
completely drying (figure 30, 31, and 32).
6. Test fit and install the Canopy Hatch on the fuselage using the

four 4/40 x / bolts with spring and flat washers provided.If

satisfied,remove and set aside hatch for cowling installation
(figure 33).

7. For the cowling,drill two holes in the bottom for the two 6/32 x /2bolts from inside the cowling
using the cowl ring holes as a guide.(figure 29).

8. Install the comling using the four 6/32 x /2bolts ,spring washers, and flat washers. If satisfied with
the fit, remove the cowling and set aside for firewall and engine installation(figure 30 and 31).

Chapter 5
Engine and Firewall Installation
Your firewall is not pre-mounted so ourcustomers can select from a wide varietyof engine choices. It is nearly
impossible to cover every engine installation choicein this manual but we ll cover a few. Your Extra330L was

designed around the more popular lightweight gas(3 to 3 /2lbs) 50cc size motors.Also, we have provided a
canister tunnel on our Extra330Lfor those desire quieter operation. Pleaseconsult the manufacturer for the
installation of optional canister.
Wewill cover the installation of twopopular engine choices in this manual,the BME and the DA50cc motors.
Follow your engine manufactures instructions forany additional guidance. Lets get started!

With the engine is installed,you will want approximately 6 -13/16 inchesfrom the firewall to the spinner back
plate for proper cowl placement. DA-50 users using 3-inch standoffs should provideperfect clearance. Right
thrust has already been built into this design so that no additional measurements will be required.
1. First we ll need to lightly sand off the fuelproofing from the inside of the motor box wherethe
firewall will mount. Take 150 grit sandpaper and sand just where you will mount the firewalland
triangle stock (figure 37).
2. Glue in the top former of the motorbox using epoxy or medium CA(figure 38and 39).

3a. Using the pre-marked offset centerline and thrust line as a guide, use a pencil
and mark your drill locations for you engine beam mount holes(figure 40).
4a. Once satisfied with your measurements, center punch you re mounting
locations and drill using the appropriate sized bit(figure 40 and 41).
5a. Test fit themotor to the firewall. If satisfied, install your four blind nuts (not
included) required for your beam mounts.Apply some white wood glue to the inner side of the four
blind nuts and install the blind nuts to the inside of the firewall(figure 42).
3b.If using the DA template provided on the last page of this manual, check the
measurements on the template to ensure the holes are correct. Cut the paper template to the size needed
to tape it to the firewall using the pre-marked thrust line and offset centerline as a guide (figure 43).
4b. Using a center punch, place it in each crosshair and mark each location. Drill

out the four holes for /-20 bolts (figure 44 and 45).

5. Temporarily mount the motor to the firewall (figure 46). Trial fit the firewall to the motor box
ensuring that the bottom of the firewall is lined up with the bottom of the motor box. Mark the locations
in the bottom of the motor box and cut away enough area for the washers or blind nuts(Figure 47).
6. Mount the firewall with the against the upper and lower formers of the motor box ensuring the bottom
of the firewall is matches the bottom edges of the side of the motor box(figure 47).
7. Epoxy the 4 pieces of triangle stock in place on the inside and outside between the motor box and
firewall to re-enforce the firewall (figure 47 and 48).

8a. You willneed to make some
additionalstandoffs to achieve correct engine placement.

Youwill wantat least a /4ofan inch clearance from theback
ofthe spinner to the front of the cowl. Thedistance fromthe
spinnerback plate to the firewall should be approximately 6-
13/16inches (figure49).
9a. Mountthe cowl and double- check this measurement.
Make appropriate standoffs to achievethe proper
distanceand mountmotor (figure49).
Tip#2Now would bea good time to figure outadditional holes in
thefirewall forfuel lines and throttle/choke pushrods.
Werecommend4/40 push rods for throttleand/or optional choke
servo. Alsoensure thereis no metal-to-metal contact fromthe
throttle/choketo theservos. 2/56Ball linksfor 4/40 rod (not
included)will preventthe aforementioned metal-to-metal contact
andwill boltto nicely to your motors carburetor.
10. Mountengine forcowl installation (figures 49 or50).
Chapter6
Cowlinginstallation

Closethe chokeand place apiece of tape over the carburetor inlet and exhaustoutlet to keepout any dust while

1. First cut out the bottom opening for cooling. If using longer
exhaust stacks, it maybe necessary to cut away the bottom portion of
the cowl ring for the cowling to pass the exhaust (figure 51 and 52).
2. Measure and cut an opening for the cylinder head and muffler just
enough to get the cowl mounted (figure 53 and 54).
3. Now we are ready to do some fine trimming. We will want to cut at least an extra 1/4 inch cut around
any of the engine components that protrude. Mark any additional areas that may require trimming
(figure 55).
4. Remove the cowling and cut out the remaining areas to be trimmed. If satisfied install the cowling,
propeller, and spinner(figure 56 and 57).
Chapter 7
Control Surface and Hardware Installation

generation of BME aircraft kits.We believe these lightweight assembliesare the best available andcan also be
purchased separately from BME aircraft.

Tip#3Installing your servo arms. We used high quality aluminum 1.25-inch arms on the aileron servos, 1.25-
inch arms on elevator servos, and one 3-inch arm for the rudder. You can also install your 4/40 ball links and
pushrod ends to the elevator and aileron servo arms prior to mounting the servo arms to the servo.
1. Install 130oz or better servos for the elevators in the servo trays located in the rear of the fuselage.
Make sure your elevator servos are centered and mount your servo arms straight down at 90 degrees
from the fuselage thrust line (figure 58).
2. Install 100oz or better servos for the ailerons in the servo trays located in the bottom of the wings.
Ensure your aileron servos are centered and mount your arms parallel to the hinge line (figure 59).
3. Install one 150oz (250oz recommended) or better servo for the rudder in the center servo tray inside
the fuselage. Ensure your rudder servo is centered and mount your rudder servo arm (figure 60).

4. Starting with the elevators, measure

back from the leading edge to find and
mark your horn bolt location. Make
sure you mark the locations on the
bottom of the control surfaces.Repeat
this step for the other elevator half
(figure 61 and 62).

5. For the ailerons, we ll need the
pushrods mounted 90 degrees from the
hinge line and servo arms. To do this
you can use a square like shown or by
other means. Again, mark the location

form the horn bolt / inch back on the

bottom of the ailerons. Ensure that you
are 90 degrees from the hinge line and
servo arms (figure 63 and 64).
6. Next, you will need to drill 5/32
holes for the aluminum M4 bolts in the
control surfaces. Use your center punch
first and drill a vertical hole from the
bottom in each of the control surface
ensuring with the top of the surface flat
on your work surface (figure 65 and
66).

7. For the rudder, measure 1 / from the

bottom and a / inch back and mark the
4
location. Measure half the width on the
leading edge of the control surface just
in front of the horn location and place it
flat on your drilling surface. Raise the
trailing edge of the surface the same distance to achieve a vertical entry for your drill bit (figure 67 and
68). Drill a 5/32 hole in the control surface ensuring the hole is perfectly vertical.
8. Install the aluminum control horn assemblies to each surface with the M4 bolt in the down position.
Use blue loc-tite on the aluminum base to ensure the bolt does not try to back out during flight. Screw
on the horns centering them on the remaining M4 bolt (figure 69, 70, and 71). For the rudder, install
the threaded rod in the same manner and screw the horns on so that the center of each horn is 1-1/2
inches from the hinge line if using the recommended 3-inch servo arm. Do not use loc-tite on the
horns.

9. Now were going to prep the hinges for installation. Take a small drop of oil and place it in each of
the pivot points of your hinges. The oil prevents excess epoxyfrom bonding the joint (figure 72).
10. Working with one panel and control surface at a time, apply epoxy intothe hinge holes of the
trailing edge. Apply epoxy toone side of the hinges and insert them into the holes(figure 73, 74, and
75).
11.Apply epoxy into the leading edge holes of the control surface and the other side of the hinges.
12. Carefully insert the control surface into the hinges and butt the two surfaces together. Move the
surface up and down a couple of times to make sure all the hinges are aligned correctly and the desired
throw is attained. 35 degrees for ailerons and 45 degrees for all others (figure 76).
13. Use some masking tape to hold the surfaces together and let cure for at least eight hours. Repeat
these steps until all of the surfaces are epoxied in place (figure 77).
14. Install the tiller springs you set aside in chapter 2 to the tiller horn and tiller.
Tip#4Optional step. After your epoxy has cured, itwould be a good time to seal all of your hinge gaps prior to
installing you hardware. Thiscan provide you with a better flying aircraft by increasing controlsurface
performance and preventing possible flutter. Clear or matching covering material can be ironed in place to fill
any gaps on the bottom of your control surfaces.
Take approximately a one-inch strip of covering the length of your surface. Foldit in half while placing into
the gap with the control surface fully deflected up and iron it in place. Check to make sure you still have full
surface travel once you have completed(figure 78, 79, and 80).

15. Screw in the metal pushrod ends three quarters of the way into each horn for the elevators and
ailerons.
16. If you have not done so already, screw in the remaining metal pushrod ends three quarters of the way
into each 4/40-ball links and mount the ball links to your servo arms.

17. Install the horizontal stabilizer/elevator assemblies at this time. Insert the / inch carbon fiber stab
tube. Slide each stabilizer half onto the tube. Make sure the anti-rotation pins are fully seated. Install

four 4/40 x / bolts (two per side). Don t forget the spring and flat washers (figure81, 82, and 83).
18. Take some masking tape and tape the elevator counter balances to the stabilizers so that they are in a
center position.
20. Again, make sure your servos and control surfaces are centered. Take your ruler and measure the
length of CF rod you will need to cut for each control surface (figure 84).
21. Cut the four rods needed to the proper length using a mask using care not to breath any of the CF
dust. Take masking tape and single wrap the area to be cut. We recommend using a small hand saw
while rotating the rod until it falls away cleanly. ADremel tool or similar will work, but it tends spread
more dust (figure 85).
22. Remove the tape from the pushrods and test fit the rods and make sure your surfaces are still
centered with the servos in the centered position (figure86).
19. For the wing, tape the ailerons to the wing in its center position.
Nowwe reready toassemble thecarbon fiber pushrods.
Tip#5You may use slow Rubber Toughened CA for the next step. We have found this to be just as strong as JB
weld without the long curing times (figure 83). CA accelerator will work well with this product. Be carefull not
to get the CA on you aircrafts covering. If using the CA, you may wish to assemble your pushrods while
removed from the plane. The metal pushrods ends are coated with a light oil preservative. Use a few Q-tips
and some rubbing alcohol to remove the preservative before bonding the CF pushrods in place.

23. If satisfied with the fit, mix the JB weld or use the Rubber CA and apply a liberal amount into the
metal pushrod ends. Insert the CF rods and rotate them one turn to ensure they have been covered with
the weld or CA. For the JB weld wipe off any excess and secure the horn and the servo arm with a
rubber band to hold the pushrods together (figure 89). Allow at least 24 hours for the JB weld to cure.
After 24 hours, check push rods by attempting to pull them apart by hand. If using the Rubber CA with
accelerator, 30 minutes should be adequate curing time.
Rudderpull-pull setup:
Thereare a wide variety of pull-pull systems on the market to choose from. Sincewe have already provided
youwith the hardware for the horns, you will just need some cable,crimps or swag fittings, and 4/40 connectors
tocomplete this installation. We used 150lb testdownrigger cable. We prefer the non-plastic coated cable
providedby some manufacturers. Again the choice is yours. You can buy this inexpensive cable and crimps at
mostsporting goods stores or boating supply outlets.
24.Install yourpull-pullcable. Ensure thedistance of the cable is equalon both sides. Also, the
distancebetween the twohornson the rudder should be the samedistance asit is on the servoarm. For
example,we useda3-inch arm with eachcable placed at1.5 inches on each side. Rotate the hornsin
untilthe cable isatthe same distance on the rudder i.e. 1.5 incheson each side from thehinge line. Itis
normalfor thenon-pullingside of the cableto slacken a little whenthe rudder is deflected.
25.Assemble the fueltank. Youwill need to decide whether you want atwo or three-line setup. Witha
two-linesetup you will needan additional T fittingin thecarburetor line that connectsto your fueldot
orfueling device. Make sureyouuse Tygonfuel tubing inside the tank for theclunk as well (figure90
and91).
26. Installthe fuel tank justin front ofthe wingtube using zip-ties or hook andlatch (Velcro) straps.
Placea loop in the ventline over thetop ofthe tank to preventfuel loss during flight andimprove flight
times. Take small zip-tiesor fuel line clamps and fastento all thepoints where the fuels lines connect
(figure92).

27. Lets install the wings at this time and check our center of
gravity (CG). Install the carbon fiber wing tube. Slide in each
wing panel and secure them with the two nylon wing retention
bolts (figure 89).
Tip#6If the wing tube is tight you can coat the tube with a little baby
powder to aid the insertion of the wing panels.
Now we re ready to check the CG and install your remaining hardware.

The CG range is 5 to 6 / inches back as measured where the wing meets
the fuselage (root). We recommend 5 to 6 inches for initial flights.
28. Check CG at this time and place your batteries and switches in locations to attain the desired CG. If
satisfied mount your remaining hardware.
Congratulations! You have just completed assembly of your Extra330L. Now would be a good time to apply
the optional vinyl graphics included with the kit. Make sure you apply the vinyl in a warm room and the
surface area is clean where the graphics are to be applied.
29. First, remove the backing from the clear transfer tape and place it on a clean work surface tact side
up. Apply the vinyl graphic face down on the transfer tape. Use a credit card or similar and press down
on the backing of your graphics to ensure the vinyl adheres to the transfer tape and will not lift up when
removing the paper backing (figure 94 and 95).
30. Carefully remove the paper backing of your graphics ensuring the vinyl is adhering to the transfer
tape. Now place the transfer tape with your vinyl graphic in a location of your choice. Take your
fingers and gently rub the vinyl so it will bond firmly to the aircrafts surface (figure 96 and 97).
31. Slowly pull the transfer tape off ensuring that the vinyl adheres to the surface (figure 98).

Now we are ready to setup your aircraft for flying. We recommend that you set your aircraft on low rates for
initial flights until you become familiar with the aircraft and its capabilities.
Therecommended low rates for this aircraft are:
25 degrees for ailerons with 0 to 20% expo
12 degrees for elevators with 0 to 20% expo
30 degrees for rudder with 0 to 20% expo
Therecommended high rates for this aircraft are:
35 degrees for ailerons with 40 to 70% expo
45 degrees for elevators with 40 to 70% expo
45 degrees for rudder with 30 to 70% expo

1. Set your throws accordingly. Double check to make sure nothing is binding to include the throttle and
