4.1 Unpacking
When openingtheboxcontainingyourreceiver, ensurethatthepackageincludesyourMAP600, aswell as:
• SoftwareCD ROM
• Certificateof warranty
• RS232 serialcable
2 The boxmayalsocontain further accessoriesdependingon theavailableoffers.
4.2 Installation of batteries
4.2.a Typesofuseablebatteries
The GPS workswithtwoAAbatteries, whichshouldbeinstalledinthebatterywell. Thereceiveroperatesusing:
• Alkalinebatteries(non-rechargeable)
• Ni-MH rechargeablebatteries(Nickel-metalhydrate). For furtherdetailsabouttheiruseand recharge,please
refertopar.4.3.
2 Althoughalkalinebatteriesallow higher autonomythan therechargeableones,we suggestusingtherechargeableNi-MH
batteriesifyouareusingyourMAP600frequentlyasthiswillreduceoperatingcosts. Toextend thelifeofthebatteries,try
rotating throughmultiple sets of batteries.
4.2.b Installationprocedure
To install thebatteriespleaserefertothediagramsbelow:
a) Movetheleverof thebattery wellcovertothecentreand pull itout(diagram1).
b) Removethebattery wellcover.
c) Install 2fullychargedAAbatteries, paying attentiontothepolarities, asshownonthebottomof thebattery well
(diagram2).
d) Pointthetoppartofthebatterywellcover(thepart oppositetothelever) towards thecorrectpositionofthebattery
well (diagram3).
e) Press thelowerpart(thepart withthelever) ofthecoveragainstthebodyofthereceiver. Youwill hearit clicking
whenfirmlyinplace.
! Remove the batteriesfrom thereceiver when notinusefor longperiodsoftime.Thisprecaution eliminatesthelikelihood
of battery leakageandcorrosion of the receiver. Moreover somecircuitsarealwayspoweredon, even if the receiver is
turned off. This consumption is very low, but over timemaydrain the batteries.
! Do not combineoldbatterieswithnewones and/or different typesand/orfor differentuses.Eachset ofbatteriesused
must bealwayscomposedof thesame2 elements, and cannotbe used separately or with other devices.
! Never throw batteriesintoafireor bring them close toasourceof heat: this maycauseexplosionsand personalinjury.
Dispose your batteriesaccording to local regulations.

4.3 Recharging of rechargeablebatteries
The typeofbattery werecommendisahigh-capacity(atleast1.700mAh),rechargeableNi-MH (Nickel-metalhydrate).
Ni-MHbatterieshaveabettercapacitycomparedtonormalNi-Cdbatteries,andarelesslikelytoproducea“memory
effect”reaction(for furtherdetailsonmemory effect,refertopar.4.3.b). Therearetwowaystorechargebatteries:
Separaterecharging of batteries(outside the receiver) – useasuitable,externalbatterycharger (not supplied)tochargethe
batteriesbeforeputting themintothereceiver.Rechargetimevariesaccordingtothetypeof charger andthecapacityofthebatteries
utilized.
Chargethe batteries whiletheyare in the receiver– usetheoptionalcarbatterycharger. This isconnectedto theappropriate socket
3V Max on the receiver.
! Do notattempt tocharge alkalinebatteriesor other non-rechargeablebatteries. Ensure that only2recommended
rechargeableNi-MHbatteriesareused in thebattery well of thereceiver, with the batterychargerconnected. Attempting
to rechargeother types of batteries(i.e.alkaline or manganese) is extremely dangerous.Non-rechargeableor unsuitable
batteriesmay leakliquid,explode, orburnandcauseserious damage!
! Ensurethat theoriginal charger isused. Using an unsuitable batterycharger or batteriesmay damage your receiver or
cause explosions orpersonal injury. When in doubt, contact your supplier.
4.3.a Battery chargecheck
Whenthedeviceisbeing used, the Satellite andalso the MAP page(screen) continuouslydisplaythebattery charge
icon. Theinternalpartoftheicon displays theremainingbattery charge: afulliconindicatesthehigherbattery charge; an
emptyicon indicatesalowbatterycharge.To switchtothe Satellite page,pleaserefertopar.7.1.
2 Similar tofuel indicatorsonvehicles, what isdisplayed isnot proportional totheactual charge(e.g., ahalf-full batteryicon does
notindicateexactlyhalf of the remainingbatterycharge).Furthermore, this indication variesaccordingto the typeof batteries used
(alkalineor rechargeable Ni-MH).
4.3.b Memory effectonrechargeablebatteries
RechargeableNi-MHbatteries(Nickel-metalhydrate)havealmostno“memoryeffect”.Thismemoryeffectresultsina
drasticreduction oftheoperatingautonomy ofthedevice,and itistriggeredifthebatteriesareregularlyrecharged
withoutcompletelydischargethemand/orwhenthebatteriesarenotcompletelyrecharged.To avoidthismemoryeffect:
• Whenpossible,rechargebatteriesonlyoncetheyhavebeencompletelydischarged(i.e.until thereceiverturns
offduring normal use).
• Donot disconnectthebatterychargerbeforethebatteriesarecompletelyrecharged.
• Completelydischargeandrechargeyourbatteriesatleasttwice amonth.
Inanycase,themosteffectivesolutioninordertoavoidmemoryeffectisanalternateuseoftwosetsofbatteries,
keeping oneset chargedonhandwhiletheotheroneisinuse by theGPS.
To completelyremovethememoryeffect,completelydischargeandrechargethebatteriesatleastthree orfourtimes
beforeusingthemagain.
2 Memoryeffectshouldnot beconfused with thenormal lifeofthebatteries,whichismadeupof300-400charge/dischargecycles
on average. Itis normal that theoperating capacityof thebatteries isreduced when thebatteries reach theendof theirlife. When
this happens, please substitute theentire set ofbatteries.
