Computermotherboardsand expansion cardscontainverydelicateIntegrated Circuit(IC)chips.To
protectthemagainstdamage fromstaticelectricity,you shouldfollowsomeprecautionswhenever
you workon yourcomputer.
1.Unplug yourcomputerwhen workingon theinside.
2.Useagrounded wriststrap beforehandling computercomponents.If youdo nothave
one,touchbothofyourhandstoasafelygrounded objectortoametalobject, suchas
the powersupplycase.
3.Holdcomponentsbythe edgesand trynottouchthe ICchips,leadsorconnectors,or
othercomponents.
4.Placecomponentson agrounded antistaticpad oron the bag thatcamewiththe
componentswheneverthe componentsareseparated fromthe system.
5.EnsurethattheATXpowersupplyisswitchedoff beforeyou plug inorremovetheATX
owerconnectoron themotherboard.
If the motherboardhasmounting holes,buttheydon’t line up withthe holeson the baseand
thereareno slotstoattachthe spacers,do notbecomealarmed you can still attachthe spacersto
the mounting holes.Justcutthe bottomportion ofthe spacers(the spacermaybe alittlehardto
cutoff, sobe carefulofyourhands).Inthiswayyou can still attachthe motherboardtothe base
withoutworrying aboutshortcircuits.Sometimesyou mayneed tousethe plasticspringstoisolate
the screwfromthe motherboardPCBsurface,becausethe circuitwiremaybe nearbythe hole.Be
careful,don’t letthe screwcontactanyprinted circuitwriteorpartson the PCBthatarenearthe
fixing hole,otherwiseitmaydamage the boardorcauseboardmalfunctioning.
