1. General
Congratulations on your new explosion-safe AR-050 air conditioning indoor unit. If you follow
the instructions in this user manual, you will enjoy your air conditioning unit safely for years to
come.
In general, an air conditioning system consists of an outdoor unit, an indoor unit and a
thermostat. In function the system refrigerates air. The indoor unit contains a heat exchanger
which is connected to the outdoor unit using special tubing. The outdoor unit provides a
continuous flow of cold fluid which decreases the temperature of the heat exchanger. The
energy of the air is absorbed by the heat exchanger while the air is pushed through by the
electrically driven fan assemblies. This results in a room air temperature decrease. The
mechanically operated thermostat enables the user to set the desired room air temperature.
This manual only covers the indoor unit and the room air thermostat.

2. Safety Instructions
The air conditioning indoor unit series AR-050 is an explosion-safe product
suitable for use in hazardous areas with explosion hazard from flammable
gases, vapors and mist, classified as Zone 1.
This manual must be read and understood for safe use of the AR-050 air conditioning indoor
unit. All warnings and instructions must be followed.
•Installation must be carried out by personnel trained and qualified in explosion safety
taking the instructions mentioned on the equipment and in this manual into
consideration.
•National and local safety regulations that apply to the installation and to installation
activities must be followed.
•Isolate electrical power to the air conditioning unit before electrical installation.
•Only connect this equipment to the correct voltage and mains frequency for which it is
designed. Refer to the specifications at the product label attached to the unit.
•For installation of the electrical connection cables from the outdoor unit at the connection
box of the indoor unit, only use certified cable glands and blind plugs that are suitable for
its use.
•The product may only be used for the function for which it is designed and shall be
maintained in a good and clean condition. Use in a clean air environment only.
•Periodic inspections and maintenance are required to maintain a sufficient clearance
between the impeller and the mounting plate.
•Do not use the air conditioning indoor unit at temperatures deviating from the specified
ambient temperature range of -20 °C to + 55 °C.
•The air conditioning indoor unit and its connection box may not be opened unless the
environment has been known to be non-hazardous or power is switched off.
•Repairs may only be carried out by the manufacturer or by a person appointed by the
manufacturer.
•Either decommission the air conditioning indoor unit or do not use it when it is damaged.
•Modifications to the equipment or changes to the design are not permitted.
•To avoid electrostatic charge of the thermostat housing, clean only with a damp cloth.
Do not use solvents.
•The flameproof joints of the Ex d fan motor cannot be repaired.
•Remote control and temperature switch assembly in type of protection intrinsic safety
Ex ia IIC, only for connection to a certified intrinsically safe circuit with the following
maximum values: Ui= 20 V, Ii= 100 mA, Pi= 100 mW, Ci= 0 µF, Li= 1 µH.

•The signal from the temperature switches must be used to disconnect power to the
compressor in case the maximum inlet temperature of 110 °C has been reached. The
connection may be restored if the inlet temperature has dropped below 95 °C.
If these instructions are not followed the explosion safety of the equipment cannot be
guaranteed. The equipment could then endanger the life of the user and could cause the
ignition of an explosive atmosphere. Consequently, Artidor as the manufacturer will waive
any responsibility.
3. Characteristics
The characteristics of the AR-050 air conditioning indoor unit can be summarized as follows:
•Manufactured on the basis of European Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114);
•Suitable for use in gas hazardous areas classified as zone 1;
•Explosion safety category and protection against ignition applied (typical):
II 2 G Ex db eb h ia IIB T4 Gb or
II 2 G Ex db eb h ia IIC T4 Gb;
•Protection degree against ingress of water and dust IP55;
•Equipped with a connection box with cable glands and connection terminals.
4. CE - Marking
With regard to explosion safety the AR-050 air conditioning indoor unit has been designed
and manufactured on the basis of the essential health and safety requirements of European
Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114) relating to Group II Category 2 G. Harmonized European
construction standards have been applied fulfilling the essential requirements of the directive.
Because it meets the requirements of the European ATEX directive, it implicitly complies with
the European Low Voltage Directive. Furthermore, the AR-050 air conditioning indoor unit
complies with the European EMC directive 2014/30/EU.
5. Application
The series AR-050 explosion-safe air conditioning indoor units have been designed for and
are suitable for use in hazardous classified areas due to flammable gases, vapors and mist.
Because they are explosion-safe and certified on the basis of Group II Category 2 G of the
ATEX directive they are suitable for use in explosion hazardous areas classified as zone 1.

7. Marking and warnings
Labels are attached to the AR-050 indoor unit for marking purposes. The specific marking

Because electrostatic charge of the thermostat housing cannot be excluded, it has been
provided with the following warning label:

8. Installation instructions
General:
•Installation of explosion-safe equipment such as this product must be carried out by
personnel specially trained and qualified to do this, following the relevant requirements
of the installation standard EN 60079-14.
•For the installation and use of this product the relevant safety regulations and the
generally recognized latest state of the technology apply. Follow the national regulations
and legal requirements relating to electrical connections to the electricity grid.
•The materials used in the construction of this equipment may contain levels of Mg, Ti
and Zi that exceed the values for EPL Gb according EN 60079-0 clause 8.3 “Metallic
enclosures and metallic parts of enclosures for group II equipment”, therefore, in rare
cases, sparks due to impact and friction could occur. The equipment shall therefore be
protected against impact and friction when installed.
•In order to ensure proper functioning of the fan(s), it is recommended to maintain a
minimum distance of 1,5 times the diameter of the impeller as distance to the wall to
assure a free inlet or outlet of air.
•All cables should be installed in such a way that they are protected against the risk of
mechanical and / or chemical damage.

•Refer to the electric diagrams and the descriptive system document as provided together
with the indoor unit (not part of this manual).
•Isolate power prior to installation.

Electrical connections:
•Follow the instructions as stated under the previous heading ‘General’.
•The electric fan motor(s) and intrinsically safe system are pre-wired to an increased safe
connection box, provided with cable glands and connection terminals.
•Refer to the electric diagram for connection of the power cables to the fan motor(s) and
the intrinsically safe circuits to the thermostat and temperature control switches. An
example is shown in figure 4.
•Use power cables with a minimum cross section of 1,5 mm² to avoid overheating and
voltage drops during start-up.
•Ensure that the cable glands fit the external connection cables with respect to clamping
size and type of cable. If not, then apply a suitable cable gland and make sure that it is
approved for its application.
•Follow the instructions as given in this manual in chapter 14 "Instructions for connection
of Ex e / Ex i terminals".

•Connect the external equipotential bonding connection to electrical ground.
•Tighten the screws of the connection terminals and close the cover.
Intrinsically safe system:
•The end user is responsible for verification of the intrinsically safe circuits consisting of
the switches and the thermostat in combination with the barrier used. Artidor provides an
example of the descriptive system document which can be used for verification of the
intrinsically safe properties of the system.
•Use a screened cable of type Helukabel OZ-BL-CY 2x0,75 mm2, total length < 175 m.
•It is critical for the intrinsic safe system to use screened cables. Screens of connected
cables need to be connected as well. The junction box of the indoor unit provides Ex i
terminals for this purpose.
•The screens of the cables of the intrinsic safe circuits may not be connected to earth in
hazardous area. Do not connect the screens of the intrinsic safe circuits to earth of the
connection box.
•Remote control and temperature switch assembly in type of protection intrinsic safety Ex
ia IIC, only for connection to a certified intrinsically safe circuit with the following
maximum values:
Ui= 20 V, Ii= 100 mA, Pi= 100 mW, Ci= 0 µF, Li= 1 µH.
9. Design requirements outdoor unit
•For correct temperature control of the indoor unit, the compressor of the outdoor unit
should be switched off if the normally-closed temperature switch opens (T > 110˚C).
•Provide a protection against over-currents of the electric motor according to EN 60204-1
by means of a motor protection switch. The current limit is given at the wiring diagram.
•Using a frequency converter for changing the fan speed is not allowed.
•Earthing of the screen of the intrinsic safe circuits is prescribed at a single point in safe
area only. The screen of this circuit must be earthed at the same point as the intrinsically
safe circuit which it is screening (near the barriers).
•An example of the wiring diagram will be issued together with the indoor unit.
10. Commissioning
Before start-up of the electric fans
•Verify the tightening of all bolts and nuts (refer to table 2), in particular with regard to the
head screws for locking the motor to the wall plate and the wall plate to the structure.
•Check the free rotation of the impeller and the absence of skidding, rotating it by hand.
Ensure absence of foreign objects in the fan.

A few hours after start-up of the electric fans:
•Make sure the bolted connections are still tightened correctly.
•Make sure that the radial clearance between the impeller and the wall plate is greater
than 1% of the impeller diameter with a minimum of 2 mm.
•Use a vibrometer to measure the vibration in accordance with ISO 14694:2003 class
BV-3, rigidly mounted fans as mentioned in table 1 below.
