1.0 INTRODUCTION
The SH-400F flexible disc hopper complements the extensive Asahi Seiko range of
hoppers giving customers the option of changing the calibration of their hoppers to
suit different coin sizes without the need for additional parts.
The range of six disc sizes available in the standard hopper is replaced with a single
disc and adjusting plate to cater for coins within the range of 21mm - 28.5mm in
diameter and 1.4mm - 3.2mm in thickness.
The overall dimensions and electrical specification remain unchanged although the
hopper is currently only available with a 24vdc motor.

Note: The previous examples of head capacity for non-specific coins are
approximate as the volume of coins is also dependent upon thickness.
2.3 Dispensing Speed
The dispensing speed of the SH-400F is 400-600 coins per minute. Speed
may vary due to coin characteristics such as diameter, thickness and loading.

3.0 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The chassis mounting plate for the motor/gearbox assembly and coin disc is inclined
at 30º to the horizontal.
A disc with holes set slightly larger than the coin diameter rotates in a clockwise
direction collecting coins from the base of the hopper and moving them towards the
payout point at the top of the mounting plate.
When the coin held in the disc approaches the payout point, two spring-loaded pins in
the base deflect it sideways beneath the bowl allowing it to be dispensed between two
rollers, one of which is spring-loaded. The coin then passes out through the sensor
which provides pulses of between 10ms and 30ms in duration (dependent upon coin
diameter).
When the control signal is removed (see Section 4.4.1), the motor is stopped instantly
by the DC motor brake. The motor brake briefly applies reverse current to prevent
overrun, ensuring accurate coin dispensing.
3.1 Removing/Replacing the Hopper Bowl
To remove the bowl, depress the bowl lock pin (part 37) located below the
lower edge of the bowl and turn the bowl clockwise. Lift the bowl clear of the
retaining pins.
Replacement is the reverse of the removal operation.
3.2 Removing/Replacing the Coin Disc
With the hopper bowl detached, remove the large domed head screw (part 61)
in the centre of the disc. The disc (part 22) can now be lifted off and adjusted
to suit a different coin diameter if required.
Note: When adjusting the coin disc for change of coin diameter it may be
necessary to adjust other clearances. Refer to Section 5 on hopper
calibration.

3.3 Safety And Maintenance
3.3.1 Control circuitry must be arranged to disconnect power to the
mechanism when the host machine is opened for servicing.
Removal of the hopper connector, without first disconnecting the
power source, may result in damage to the optical sensors.
3.3.2 Over-current protection is not provided on the mechanism. Customers
are strongly recommended to provide suitable fusing arrangements in
event of equipment failure.
3.3.3 The mechanism control board detects a stall situation and initiates
motor reversals to free jams. Control circuitry should be arranged to
disconnect power if this situation exceeds 10 seconds maximum, to
prevent motor damage.
3.3.4 Servicing and maintenance staff must be adequately trained and aware
of the hazards arising from the rotating disc. Fingers, long hair and
loose clothing, including ties, must be kept clear at all times.
3.3.5 Avoid handling the unit by the bowl only, as this could become
detached if not correctly located, thus causing possible injury or
damage.
3.3.6 Prevent foreign objects such as elastic bands, paper clips and screws
from entering the hopper bowl.
3.3.7 Regular cleaning of optical sensors is advisable to prevent miscounting.
3.3.8 When cleaning the bowl, use a diluted neutral detergent and dry with a
clean cloth.
3.3.9 Wiring errors are a common cause of problems, particularly with the
sensors which can be damaged with a relatively small voltage overload.

4.3 Electrical Characteristics
To achieve optimum performance the power supply must be able to match the
requirements of the table below.
The SH-400F hopper is designed for intermittent use and continuous run time
must not exceed 3 minutes maximum.

4.4 Control
4.4.1 Driving the Hopper

Provide Pin 1 with 24vDC and Pin 2 with 0v constantly. Motor On+
should be pulled high to a reference voltage of between 5vDC and
12vDC for interfacing ‘directly’ with host machine control circuitry. If
connection of Motor On+ to a higher voltage is desired, then use of a
pull up resistor is recommended to limit the current to between 8mA
and 23mA.
To drive the hopper the host machine must pull Motor On- down to
below 1.0v DC. This can be achieved by use of a switch, relay or open
collector transistor. The following current will be drawn: -

4.5 Payout Sensor Specifications
Two sensor options are available, optical and proximity. The wiring
connections for both options are identical allowing interchange between either
model.
Both sensors now incorporate an additional check lead to permit performance
checks to be performed by the host machine prior to dispensing.
Lowering the potential on the check lead to zero volts simulates a coin pulse
and the host interface can be designed to inhibit payout if this pulse is not
seen.
