1)Introduction
TheBExL25DandBExL15Daresecondgeneration
flameproofloudspeakerswhicharecertifiedtotheEuropean
StandardsEN50014:1992 andEN50018:1994andmeet
therequirementsofthe ATEXdirective94/9/EC.The
loudspeakerscan be used inhazardousareaswhere
potentiallyflammableatmospheresmaybepresent. There
arethree versionsofeachloudspeaker,8ohm,16ohmor
100VLinetransformer.On100Vlinetransformerunitsthere
arefouroutputtappingsforeachsizeofloudspeaker.The
BExL25Dunitproducesoutputlevelsinthe117dB(A)range
andtheBExL15Dunit producesoutput levelsinthe112dB(A)
range.Bothloudspeakerscan be usedinZone 1andZone 2
areaswithgasesingroupsIIA,IIBandIICandtemperature
ClassificationsofT1, T2, T3andT4.

Theloudspeakersshouldbesecurelyboltedtoasuitable
surfaceusing the7mmdiameterboltholesinthestainless
steelUshaped mountingbracket(see figure1).Theangle
can thenbe adjustedinthedirectionthatthesoundis
primarilyrequired tocover.Thiscan beachievedby
looseningthetwolargebracketscrewsinthesideof the unit,
whichallowadjustmentinstepsof18°.Oncompletionof the
installationthetwolarge bracketadjustmentscrewsonthe
sideof theunitmustbe fullytightened toensurethattheunit
cannot moveinservice.
7) SafetyWarning (ElectrostaticHazard)
TheacoustichornsectionismadeofABSPlastic,therefore
toavoidapossibleELECTROSTACTICCHARGEtheunit
must onlybe cleanedwithadampcloth.
8) Access to theFlameproofEnclosure
Inordertoconnecttheaudiosupplycablestothe
loudspeakerit isnecessarytoremovetheflameproofcoverto
gainaccesstothe flameproofchamber.Toachievethis
removethefourM6hexagonsocketheadscrews(see figure
2)andwithdrawtheflameproofcovertakingextremecarenot
todamage theflameproofjointsintheprocess.
Notethefour M6screwsareClass A4-80 stainlesssteel
andonlyscrewsofthiscategorycanbeusedonthese
loudspeakers. It isthereforeimportant that thesescrewsand
theirspringwashersarekeptinasafeplaceduring
installation.
Oncompletionofthecablewiringinstallationtheflameproof
jointsshouldbe inspected toensurethattheyareclean and
thattheyhavenotbeendamaged duringinstallation.Also
checkthattheearthbondingwirebetweenthetwocasting
sectionsissecureandthe‘O’ringsealisinplace.When
replacingtheflameproofcovercastingensurethat it issquare
withtheflameproofchambercastingbeforeinserting.
Carefullypushthecoverinplaceallowingtimefortheairto
be expelled.Onlyafterthecoverisfullyinplace,shouldthe
fourM6StainlessSteelA4-80coverboltsandtheirspring
washersbe inserted andtightened down.If thecoverjams
whileitisbeinginserted,carefullyremoveitandtryagain.
Neverusethecoverboltstoforcethecoverintoposition.
9) PowerAmplifierSelection
Itisimportantthattheloudspeakersareconnectedtopower
amplifiersthathaveoutputsthatarecompatibletothe typeof
loudspeakerbeingused.Loudspeakerswitha100Vline
matchingtransformerfittedmustbeconnectedtoapower
amplifierwitha100Vlineoutput. Lowimpedance8ohmor
16 ohmloudspeakersmustbeconnected toamplifierswitha
suitablelowimpedanceoutput. Whenselectingthecablesize
considerationmustbegiventothecurrentthateachunit
draws,thenumberof loudspeakersontheline andthelength
ofthecableruns.

11) Earthing
All loudspeakersmustbeconnected toagoodqualityearth.
Theunitsareprovidedwithinternalandexternalearthing
terminalswhicharebothlocated ontheflameproofcover
sectionoftheunit (see figures2and3).
Whenusingtheexternalearthterminalacablecrimplug
mustbe used.Thecablelugshouldbe locatedbetweenthe
twoM5stainless steelflatwashers.TheM5stainlesssteel
springwashermustbe fixed betweentheouterflatwasher
andtheM5stainless steelnuttoensurethatthecablelugis
secured against looseningandtwisting.
Theinternalearthbondingwireensuresthatagoodquality
earthismaintained betweentheflameproof chambercasting
andtheflameproofcovercasting.
12) CableGlands
TheBExL25DandBExL15Dloudspeakershavedualcable
glandentrieswhichhavean M20 x1.5entrythreadas
standardoraPG13.5threadasaspecial.Onlycableglands
approvedforEx‘d’applicationscan beused,whichmustbe
suitableforthe typeofcablebeing usedandalsomeetthe
requirementsoftheEx‘d’flameproofinstallationstandard
BS EN60079-14 : 1997.

enclosure.The100VLine loudspeakersarefittedwithafive
wayterminalblock.TerminalAiscommonandone ofthe
otherterminalsB, C, DorEshouldbe selecteddependingon
what output levelisrequired (seetablebelow).

Asinglewirewithacross sectionalareaofupto4mm²can

whenusingcableswithlarge crosssectionalareassuchas
2.5mm²andabove.
BExL25DandBExL15D8ohmand16 ohmlowimpedance
loudspeakershavedualinputterminalsonthepcbassembly
forinputandoutputwiring.Acableofupto2.5mm²can be
connected toeachterminal.If dclinemonitoringisused cut
thelinkontheboard(see figure5andsection14ofthis
manual).

OnBExL25DandBExL15Dloudspeakers,dclinemonitoring
can be usedifrequired.Boththe100VLineunitsandthe
LowImpedanceunitshaveablockingcapacitorfitted.It
shouldbenotedthateachloudspeakerhasa1Mohmbleed
resistorconnectedacrosstheblockingcapacitorandthis
shouldbetakenintoaccountwhenselectingthevalueof the
endoflinemonitoringresistance.
Theendoflinemonitoringresistorcan beconnected across
theterminalsontheendoflineunit. Onthelowimpedance
unitscaremustbetakenwiththepolarityofthemonitoring
voltage.
On100Vlineunitsthe end oflineresistorusedmusthavea
minimumresistancevalueof4k7ohmsandaminimum
wattage of2.5watts
Onlowimpedanceunitstheendoflineresistorusedmust
haveaminimumresistancevalueof2kohmsandaminimum
wattage of0.5wattsoraminimumresistancevalueof500
ohmsandaminimumwattage of2watts.Onthelow
impedanceunitscaremustbetakenwiththepolarityofthe
monitoringvoltage.If an endoflineresistorisfittedtoaunit
thelinksontheprintedcircuitboardsofall loudspeakersin
thelinemustbe cutforthedcblockingcapacitorstobein
circuit inordertodcmonitortheline(seefigure5).

must be used. Thecablelugshouldbelocatedbetweenthe
twoM5stainless steelflat washers. TheM5stainless steel
springwashermust befixedbetweentheouterflat washer
andtheM5stainless steelnut toensurethat thecablelugis
secured against looseningandtwisting.
12)CableGlands
ThesoundershavedualcableglandentrieswithM20 x1.5
entrythreads.OnlycableglandsapprovedforEx‘d’
applicationscan be used,whichmustbesuitableforthetype
ofcablebeingusedandalsomeet therequirementsoftheEx
‘d’flameproofinstallationstandardBS EN60079-14 : 1997.
