Positioning
IMOResolutionA382(X)MagneticCompassesCarriageandPerformanceStandards
includesasectiononthepositioningofthemagneticcompass.Itisalsostrongly
recommendedthatISO694‐PositioningofMagneticCompassesinShips‐is
compliedwith.If,duetothespecialconstructionofthevessel,itisnecessaryto
deviatefromthese,thentheFlagStateAuthorityshouldbeconsulted,asincorrect
positioningcanaffecttheexpectedperformanceofthemagneticcompass.
Installation
Detailsandnoteswithintheinstallationdrawingsgiveadequateinformationtocarry
outaninstallation.
Careshouldbetakentoensuretheverticalaxisoftheperiscopeandbinnacleare
parallel.Ifthereisanydoubtastothecapabilityoftheshipyardmethodstoguarantee
this,thenwerecommendthefollowing:‐
a)Fitthebinnacleasperdrawings.
b)Fitthecompassinthebinnacle.
c)Locatetheperiscopeintothebaseofthebinnacleasperdrawing.
d)Holdtheperiscopeinpositionandcheckthatthecompasscardcanbeviewed
throughthemirror.Adjustthepositionifnecessary.
e)Securetheceilingflange.
2.COMPASSADJUSTING
Thebinnaclehasacompensationsystembuilt‐in.Thecompassadjustingmustbe
carriedoutbyaprofessionalcompassadjuster.
TheC20binnaclecompassissimpletoadjustorcompensate.Thecompensatorsare
theslottedshaftsintheholesonthecompass;notethattheslotsarepositioned
parallelwiththebottomofthecase.
Withtheslotsinthisposition,thecompensatorsareinneutralandarenotaffecting
thecompassReading.
Turnthecompensatorswithapieceofbrassorcooperofprroperthickness.Donot
useascrewdriver,astheyareoftensteelandmayinterferewiththeadjustingprocess.
BegintheadjustingprocedureafterhavinglocatedN‐SandE‐Worsightingpoints
whosedirectionisreliableknownorcanbedeterminedfromtheCoastandGeodetic
Surveyofthelocalarea.
Asthecompassisstrictlyamagneticdevice,itwillindicateonlymagneticheadings.
Thecompensatorsareusedonlytominimizeanymagneticaffectofmetalpartsofthe
boatandcannotbeexpectedtocorrectthecompassfortruebearings.
1.LineuptheboatonthemarkfortheNorthheadingandobservethecompass
reading.IfitisnotindicatingaNorthheading,turnoneofthecompensatorsshaft
slowlyuntiltheReadingisNorth.
2.TurntheboattotheEastmakerandcorrectforone‐halftheerrorobservedby
turningtheothershaft.
3.Repeatthestepsabove,ifnecessary,correctingforone‐halfobservederrorineach
direction.
