This document provides instructions for replacing the Avid Unity LANshare LP enclosure
and the Avid MEDIArray LP enclosure. The replacement enclosure does not include the 16
data drives (accessible from the front). You need to use the 16 data drives from the enclosure
you are replacing. Depending on which enclosure you are replacing, the process might
require you to swap the internal system drive and any optional adapter boards you might
have installed. Avid recommends that you read all the information in this document
thoroughly before replacing the enclosure.
You need to return your old enclosure to Avid using the packaging that came with the
replacement enclosure. Specific return instructions are included with your replacement
enclosure, and varies by location.
The replacement enclosure comes the Windows®XP operating system installed. You have
the followings options for getting the replacement enclosure operational. Procedures to
support these options are included in this document.
Avid Unity LANshare LP Enclosures
• If your Avid Unity LANshare LP enclosure has additional adapter boards installed, you
need to move them from the old enclosure to the new.
• Move the internal system drive from your old enclosure into the new enclosure. Your
Avid Unity software should run as it did before. If you are prompted for a Windows
Product Key Certificate of Authenticity, use the number provided on the side of the new
enclosure. The Avid Unity LANshare LP runs on the Windows 2003 operating system.
• Install the data drives from your old enclosure into the new enclosure.
• The Windows operating system is expected to detect a new system board and require
you to Authenticate the operating system. Authenticate the Windows operating system
using the new Windows Product Key Certificate of Authenticity provided with the new
enclosure, and install your Avid Unity software version on the new enclosure.

Avid MEDIArray LP Enclosures
• If your Avid MEDIArray LP enclosure has additional adapter boards installed, you need
to move them from the old enclosure to the new.
• Install the data drives from your old enclosure into the new enclosure.
• There is no need to move the system drive. Authenticate the Windows operating system
using the new Windows Product Key Certificate of Authenticity provided with the new
enclosure, and install your Avid Unity software version on the new enclosure.

1. Retry the action, carefully following the instructions given for that task. It is especially
important to check each step of your workflow.

with the internal SCSI controller.

Replacing Your Old Enclosure
To replace your old enclosure you need to remove the old enclosure from the rack and
relocate some components into the new enclosure. It might be necessary to have a monitor,
keyboard, and mouse available in case you power the enclosure on without remounting the
enclosure back in the rack.
The following subsections describe the tasks:

nThe metadata in Avid Unity MediaNetwork v4.2.x is saved on the data drives and is not
impacted by the procedures in this document.
Use these subsections as a guide for replacing the enclosure in the rack after you have
reallocated the internal components. If more information is needed see the Avid Unity
LANshare LP Guide and Avid MEDIArray LP Setup Guide.
Disconnecting Cables
Before removing the old Avid Unity enclosure from the rack, you need to remove all the
cables and application key from the rear of the enclosure. All of the connectors on the
enclosure are identified in “Avid Unity v4.2.x Supported Slot Locations” on page 3.
Reference this figure when reconnecting the cables after you have remounted the enclosure
into the rack.
If your old enclosure includes an additional adapter board, you need to relocate it into the
new enclosure.
Remove the following cables and application key (dongle):
1. Make sure the Avid Unity LANshare LP or MEDIArray LP enclosure is shut down.
2. Remove the application key from the USB port on the back of the enclosure.
3. Remove the three power cords from the back of the enclosure.
4. Remove any fiber cable from the back of the enclosure.
5. Remove any Ethernet cable from the back of the enclosure.
6. Remove any monitor, keyboard, and mouse cables from the back of the enclosure.

Remove the Data Drives
Data drives are not included in your new enclosure, you must removed the 16 data drives
from your old enclosure before removing the enclosure from your rack. When installing the
drives in your new enclosure, it is not necessary to replace them in the same positions as they
were in the old enclosure.
To remove the installed data drives:
1. Starting with the drive in the upper left-hand corner; slide the drive carrier latch to the
right to release the drive carrier handle.

2. Pull the drive carrier handle completely open and use it to slide the drive out of the
enclosure.
3. Set the drive aside until you are ready to reinstall it in the new enclosure.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the remaining drives, removing the drives from left to right, and
top to bottom.
nMake sure the drive LEDs are on the right before when replacing the drives into the
enclosure.

Remove the Enclosure From the Rack
cYou must have someone helping you lift the enclosure while you are moving the
enclosure in or out of the rack.
To remove the enclosure from the rack:
1. Remove the four rack screws from the front of the rack enclosure.
2. Slide the enclosure out of the rack so that the slide rail completely open.
You need to separate the slide rails. The inner rail is attached to the enclosure, the other
rail is attached to the rack.

3. Press the plastic spring clip down on the inside of the slide rail on both sides of the
enclosure.

4. Pull and lift the enclosure out of the outer slide rails that are secured to the rack. Place
the old enclosure on a sturdy surface.
You will need to removed the inner rails from the old enclosure and attach them to the
new enclosure.

To attach the inner slide rails on the new enclosure:
1. Remove the three screws securing both inner slide rails from each side of the enclosure.

2. Position the inner slide rail against the side of the new enclosure so that the notched end
is under the raised tab at the front of the unit.
3. Secure the inner slide rail to the enclosure with the three slide rail screws.
4. Repeat this procedure to attach the other inner slide rail on the other side of the
enclosure.
5. If you are not moving any internal adapter boards or swapping the system drive, replace
the new enclosure into the rack. Otherwise continue with “Moving the Adapter Boards”
on page 9 or “Swapping the System Drive” on page 10.
After reinstalling the enclosure into the rack, replace the data drives.

Moving the Adapter Boards
You need to move the additional and optional adapter boards to the new enclosure.
To move the boards:
1. Remove the cover screw from each side of the old enclosure top cover. The two screws
are about 5 inches from the front of the enclosure; one on each side.
2. Slide the top cover approximately one inch back from the front and lift the cover off.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to remove the cover on the new enclosure.
nMake sure you are wearing a grounding wrist strap that is attached to the metal of the
enclosure before you continue. The boards are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Do not
handle boards unless you are properly grounded.
4. Identify the slot for the adapter boards you are moving (see “Avid Unity v4.2.x
Supported Slot Locations” on page 3).

5. Remove the screw holding the adapter board in place in the old enclosure.

6. Lift the adapter board out of the old enclosure.
7. Remove the screw holding the slot cover in place in the new enclosure.
8. Lift the slot cover out of the enclosure.
9. Insert the adapter board into the same slot in the new enclosure and firmly push the
board into the slot to make sure it is completely seated.
10. Replace the slot cover screw to hold the adapter board in place.
11. Insert and secure the blank slot cover into the old enclosure.
12. Continue with “Swapping the System Drive” on page 10.
Swapping the System Drive
The internal drive in the new enclosure has the Windows XP operating system installed. You
have the following options regarding the internal drive:
• If you are going to use the system drive that is already installed in the new enclosure,
you can install the Avid Unity software on the new enclosure and setup the Avid Unity
MEDIArray LP like a new installation, see “Activating the Windows Operating System”
on page 13.
• Use the internal system drive from the old enclosure and avoid loading the software. See
the following procedure.

To move the internal drives:
1. Remove the cover screw from each side of the old enclosure top cover (if not already
done). The two screws are about 5 inches from the front of the enclosure; one on each
side.
2. Slide the top cover approximately one inch back from the front and lift the cover off.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to remove the cover on the new enclosure.

4. Locate the internal drive and remove the four screws holding the drive in the new
enclosure.

5. Lift the drive enough to access the signal and power cables.
6. Unplug the power and signal cables from the drives.

7. Label the drive from the new enclosure as “New” so not to confuse them with the drive
from the old enclosure.
8. Remove the four screws holding the drive in the old enclosure.
9. Lift the drive out of the enclosure enough to access the signal and power cables.
10. Position the drive from the old enclosure near the location where the drive is to be
installed in the new enclosure.
cThe two drive cables are keyed to fit only in the correct position. If you find it difficult
to reconnect the cable, double-check to make sure you are not forcing the cable into the
the connector upside-down.
11. Connect the drive power cable to the power connector on the drive.
12. Connect the drive signal cable to the signal connector on the drive.
13. Position the drive cage over the screw hole in the new enclosure and so the that DVD
cable is over the system drive power and signal cables. Take care not to damage or pinch
any cables.
14. Replace the four drive screws removed earlier.

15. Install the drive from the new enclosure into the old enclosure, when returning it to
Avid.
16. Replace the top covers and screws on both enclosures.
17. Reinstall the new enclosure into the rack using the removal instruction as a guide, see
“Remove the Enclosure From the Rack” on page 7.
After reinstalling the enclosure into the rack, replace the data drives.
Windows Product Key Certificate
The Windows Product Key Certificate of Authenticity sticker is on the side of the new
enclosure. You must use this new Windows Product Key Certificate of Authenticity number
with the new enclosure. Before installing the new enclosure into your rack, note the this
number. You might be asked for it during the initial Windows startup.
nIf you ever need to run the Product Recovery DVD on the new or old internal drives in the
new enclosure, use the new Windows Product Key Certificate of Authenticity provided with
the new enclosure. Instructions for running the Product Recovery DVD are provided in the
Avid Unity Setup Guides.
Activating the Windows Operating System
If you have chosen to use the internal drive that came with your new enclosure, the Windows
Setup utility needs to run to set several Windows operating system parameters.
nIf you have relocated the internal drive from the old enclosure to the new enclosure, this
procedure is not needed. Your operating system on the old drive is still valid.
To set up the Windows operating system:
1. The Windows Setup utility starts and the Windows Setup dialog box opens showing the
License Agreement screen.
2. Click the Agree radio button to accept the license.
3. Click Next. The Regional Settings screen appears.
tIf you are outside the United States, customize the system and locale settings, and
the keyboard for your location.
tIf you are in the United States, continue.
4. Click Next. The Personalize Your Software screen appears.
5. Type the system administrator’s name in the Name text box.

6. Type the company name in the Organization text box.
7. Click Next. The Your Product Key screen appears.
8. Type the Product Key from the Certificate of Authenticity in the Product key text box.
The certificate is located on the side of the enclosure.
9. Click Next. The License Modes screen appears.
10. Click the Per Server radio button and set the number of concurrent connections to the
number of Ethernet clients the application key allows. For example, if your application
key is set for 12 Ethernet clients, set this value to 12.
cIf recovering a LANserver LP operating system, do not set the number of concurrent
connections to more than 20. This is the maximum number of clients that the
LANserver LP system can support. Setting this value to more than 20 impacts the
system performance.
11. Click Next. The Computer Name and Administrator Password screen appears.
12. Type the name you want to use for the enclosure in the Computer name text box.
nAvid recommends you use an Administrator password to prevent unauthorized use of the
Administrator account.
13. Type the password you want to use for the Administrator account in the Administrator
Password text box.
14. Confirm the password by retyping the password in the Confirm Password text box.
15. Click Next. The Date and Time Settings screen appears. Set the correct date, time, and
time zone for the enclosure.
16. Click the “Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes” check box if your
location observes daylight saving time.
17. Click Next. The Network Settings screen appears.
18. Click the Typical radio button. The network settings are site dependent and will be set
later during the enclosure configuration.
19. Click Next. The Workgroup and Computer Domain screen appears.
20. Click No. The workgroup and domain settings are site dependent and will be set later
during the enclosure configuration. The Performing Final Tasks screen appears,
followed by the Complete the Windows Setup Wizard screen.
21. Click Finish. The Windows operating system is loaded.
22. Continue with “Windows Activation” to activate the operating system by registering
with Microsoft®.

Windows Activation
When starting a new system or after recovering the Windows operating system, you need to
run the Windows Setup utility to set the operating system parameters. You need to have the
Windows license number to type in as part of the configuration. Avid provides the license
number on the Sticker on the side of the enclosure.
nAn Internet connection is not recommended in most Avid media networks. These instructions
explain how to activate the Windows operating system using the telephone. If your system is
connected to the Internet, follow the on-screen instructions (the process is more automated).
To activate the Windows operating system:
1. Click on Start > Activate Windows.
The “Let’s activate Windows” dialog appears.
2. Click on the “Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate
Windows” radio button.

3. Click on the Next button.
“Generating new Installation ID” appears briefly and then the “Activate Windows by
phone” dialog appears.
4. Select your country from the Step 1 menu.
When you select your country, the phone number for your location appears in the
Step 2.
5. Dial the number and provide the installation ID shown in Step 3 to the Microsoft
customer service representative.
6. Type in the confirmation ID number provided by the Microsoft customer service
representative.
7. Click Next and follow any on-screen instructions to finish the activation.
Click “Remind Me Later” to close the activation and return to this process at a later date.
