Chapter 1
Overview
The Avid Expansion Chassis extends the number of NuBus slots in your Avid
system to support additional options that do not fit into the available slots of your
Macintosh. The chassis has 12 NuBus slots and provides cooling, air filtering, and
service access to ensure reliable operation in an industrial environment. The
Expansion Chassis includes:
•
An enclosure for up to 12 NuBus cards
•
A 20-inch shielded flat ribbon cable
•
An interface card that resides in a single NuBus slot in any Macintosh Quadra
650, Quadra 950, or Power Macintosh 8100
The Avid 3D Effects Option is a set of three processor boards that enhance and
extend the effects capabilities of the Avid software. The boards are housed in a
penthouse cover that you add to the Expansion Chassis and attach to the Advanced
JPEG card in the chassis. The 3D Effects Option components include:
•
A set of three effects boards
•
An updated effects module for the JPEG card
•
A SCSI cable

Chassis Front and Rear Panels
The front panel of the Expansion Chassis has a power on/off switch and a power
on indicator.
Figure 1 shows the rear panel of the Expansion Chassis. It has an AC power input,
a fuse holder, 12 standard NuBus slot openings, and an expansion panel. The
expansion panel supports future connector options that use a larger than standard
NuBus opening.
The rear panel of the 3D Effects Option has three connectors: a SCSI connector,
an RS-422 connector, and an HPGI connector. Currently, only the SCSI
connector is used. The 3D Effects Option receives power from the Expansion
Chassis power supply.

Installing and Using the Avid Expansion Chassis
Chapter 1 • Overview 3
Macintosh Compatibility and Slot Limitations
Not all Macintoshes use the same NuBus architecture. Although the Expansion
Chassis has an additional 12 external NuBus slots, you cannot use all of the slots
because of NuBus architecture limitations (some slots in the Macintosh and the
chassis are duplicates). For the Macintosh models that can connect to the
Expansion Chassis, you can only use from nine to 13 slots between the Macintosh
and the chassis.
As a result, you must configure the Expansion Chassis for each Macintosh model.
Table 1 lists the Avid-supported Macintosh models and the maximum number of
available slots between the Macintosh and the chassis (excluding the slot used for
the chassis interface card).
Each NuBus slot inside the Macintosh and Expansion Chassis has its own unique
slot ID number or letter. Sixteen slot IDs are available and, of these, Apple reserves
two for its own use. In addition, you can’t use the same slot ID number for more
than once.
There are several duplicate NuBus slots in the Macintosh and the Expansion
Chassis. For example, the NuBus slot labeled ID C is a duplicate slot — it appears
in both the Macintosh and the chassis. Therefore, you can only install a NuBus
card in slot C in the Macintosh or slot C in the chassis. You can’t install NuBus
cards in slot C in both the Macintosh and the chassis.
▲
Installing NuBus cards in slots that have the same slot ID in both the Macintosh
and the chassis can cause serious system errors. Your Macintosh may also not
power up correctly.

4 Chapter 1 • Overview
Installing and Using the Avid Expansion Chassis
Rack Mounting Options
The Expansion Chassis, with or without the 3D Effect cover, can be mounted in a
standard 19-inch rack.To ensure safe installation in a rack configuration, Avid
recommends mounting the chassis in the lower half of the rack. A set of rack-
mount slides are available from Avid for mounting the Expansion Chassis.
Connect the chassis to an approved listed power strip. Do not lose continuity when
attached in the racks. If you install the chassis in a rack, make sure that the
maximum ambient operating temperature of the power supply does not exceed
50
º
C.
3D Effects SCSI Considerations
As you install and configure SCSI devices, make sure that you set SCSI IDs,
terminate the bus, and correctly determine cable types and lengths. Failure to
properly configure SCSI devices can result in system hangs and data loss.
SCSI IDs
The Macintosh uses the SCSI IDs to communicate with the devices on the SCSI
bus. Each device has a SCSI ID, including the Macintosh. SCSI IDs 0 through 6
are available for devices; SCSI ID 7 is reserved for the Macintosh. You can’t use a
SCSI ID for more than one device on the bus.
▲When installing new SCSI devices on your system, you must always check which
SCSI IDs are currently in use. Having duplicate IDs can cause serious system
problems such as data corruption, system errors, or even boot failures.
Bus Termination
If you’re using the Macintosh native external SCSI bus, you must place a
terminator on the first SCSI device (using an in-line terminator) and last device in
the physical chain.

Installing and Using the Avid Expansion Chassis Chapter 1 • Overview 5
Cable Types and Lengths
Use only Avid-designed SCSI cables when you connect the SCSI devices to your
Macintosh and the daisy-chain of SCSI devices. These cables are specifically
designed for systems running real-time applications and the cable lengths have
been specified to ensure data integrity on the SCSI bus.
▲Avid recommends that you do not use third-party, off-the-shelf SCSI cables
because they may compromise data integrity.
3D Effects System Restrictions
To use the Avid 3D Effects Option your system requires the following hardware
and software:
•A Media Composer 1000, 4000, or 8000, or a Film Composer system.
•A Power Macintosh 8100 or a Quadra 650/900/950 with a Power Macintosh
upgrade card installed. For detailed instructions on performing this upgrade,
see Installing Power Macintosh Upgrade Cards.
•An Avid Expansion Chassis. For instructions on adding this hardware, see
Chapter 4, “3D Effects Installation.”
•An Advanced JPEG board.
•A Silicon Express IV SCSI accelerator board with SCSI accelerator software.
✍For a list of the correct Avid NuBus card revisions for your configuration, see the Release
Notes.
If your system is not already a Power Macintosh or does not have the correct
revisions of other hardware and software, see Installing Avid Hardware for
instructions on the appropriate upgrades before you add the 3D Effects cover to
the Expansion Chassis.

6 Chapter 1 • Overview Installing and Using the Avid Expansion Chassis

Chapter 2
Populated Chassis
Installation
Avid ships all new Expansion Chassis preconfigured (with the NuBus cards in place
and the internal NuBus slot IDs set). The Macintosh ships with the chassis
interface card installed. This helps to speed the installation of the chassis and the
Macintosh. Use the instructions in this chapter when you install a new Expansion
Chassis and Power Macintosh for the first time.
✍If you purchased your Expansion Chassis as part of an upgrade to an existing Avid
system, go to Chapter 3,“Empty Chassis Installation,” to complete the installation.
