This section contains information that will help you prepare for the Ultra

computer installation.
Safety
Precautions 0
For your protection, observe the following safety precautions when setting up
your equipment.
●Follow all cautions, warnings, and instructions marked on the
equipment.
●Never push objects of any kind through openings in the equipment as
they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out components that
could result in fire or electric shock.
●Refer servicing of equipment to qualified personnel.
●To further protect both yourself and the equipment, observe the
following precautions.

Precautions 0
Ensure that the voltage and frequency of the power outlet used matches
the electrical rating labels on the equipment.
Wear antistatic wrist straps when handling any magnetic storage devices,
and printed circuit boards.
Each of the following items requires access (by way of a separate power
cord):
●
Ultra 5 computer, external peripherals, and monitor used for
diagnostics. The
Ultra 5 should be powered by a non-switched,
dedicated, 15-amp circuit.
●The
Ultra 5 computer uses nominal input voltages of 100-125
and 200-240 V AC at 50-60 Hz.
Sun
*products are designed to work
with single-phase power systems having a grounded neutral
conductor under safety precautions. To reduce the risk of electrical
shock, do not plug
Sun products into another type of power source.
Contact your facilities manager or qualified electrician if you are
unsure what type of power is supplied to your building.
DO NOT make mechanical or electrical modifications to the
computer. Sun Microsystems is not responsible for regulatory
compliance of modified computers.

●No. 2 Phillips screwdriver (magnetized tip suggested)
●Needle-nose pliers
●Grounding wrist strap
●Antistatic mat.

Familiarize yourself with the layout of the Ultra 5. These figures show the
following:
●Front Panel. This figure shows the front panel of the
Ultra 5. The
diskette drive is not available if the optional second internal hard
drive has been installed.
●Rear Panel (UltraSCSI). This figure shows the rear panel when you
have an UltraSCSI card, which is always installed in PCI slot 2. The
UltraSCSI card has two 68-pin SCSI connectors. Other PCI cards
may be installed in slots 1 and 3.
●Rear Panel (

have a
SunSwift card, which is always installed in PCI slot 2. The

SunSwift card has one 68-pin SCSI connector and one ethernet
RJ45 connector. Other PCI cards may be installed in slots 1 and 3.
Identifying PCI

The following table shows where the different PCI cards can be installed
in the
Ultra 5 computer.

PCI 2 Required. A SunSwift card is used when two
ethernet connections are required.
HSI/P PCI 1 and
PCI 3 Optional. HSI/P cards are not required when using ethernet for ACD connectivity. Use PCI 1 to
support four ACDs if you have only one HSI/P
card. Use PCI 1 and 3 to support eight ACDs
when you have two HSI/P cards.
SAI/P PCI 1 and
PCI 3 Optional.
Token Ring PCI 3 Optional.
