ABOUT THE AVALUNG
Black Diamond’s AvaLung products separate exhaled air from a buried
person’s intake air source. The snowpack has enough oxygen to
substantially prolong consciousness if it is not contaminated by exhaled
CO2. The patented AvaLung valve mechanism pulls incoming air from near
the mouthpiece and expels exhaled air far from the intake source.
AvaLung products cannot protect the user from the complex and traumatic
powers of avalanches but when used properly they will increase the amount
of time buried victims can ward off asphyxiation, allowing partners more
time for search and rescue. Black Diamond AvaLung products must be worn
on the outside of all clothing to work properly. If buried, the victim must
focus on keeping the mouthpiece sealed in the mouth. “Cheat breathing”
or breathing around the mouthpiece will contaminate the intake air area
with CO2and reduce survival time. In questionable terrain deploy the
mouthpiece to be directly in front of the mouth or in the mouth. Secure the
pack or harness by fastening all buckles and adjusting them to fit snugly.
Black Diamond AvaLung products are not a substitute for proper judgment
and experience in the backcountry. Understand the risks of avalanche prone
conditions and practice avalanche search and rescue techniques regularly.

CAPABILITIES OF THE AVALUNG
The AvaLung has been designed to do the following:
Extract air from snow to potentially enable a buried person to continue1.
to breathe while his/her partners make an immediate rescue effort.
Separate exhaled air containing carbon dioxide into a different part of2.
the snow pack.
Minimize “ice masking.”3.
Minimize tracheal packing to help maintain an open airway.4.
USE OF THE AVALUNG PACK
NOTE: Correct use of the AvaLung Pack is critical to its proper functioning.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Before using the AvaLung Pack, you MUST remove the protective plastic
cover from the mouthpiece. Do not use your new AvaLung Pack if the
protective cover is missing – please return it to the place of purchase.
The AvaLung system integrated into this pack is intended to be used only1.
with this specifically designed Black Diamond pack. DO NOT use the
AvaLung system alone or retrofitted to any other backpack. The AvaLung
unit in this pack cannot be used in the AvaLung II harness system.
2. ALWAYS wear your AvaLung Pack as your outermost layer. In order for
the AvaLung system to function properly, it must be in direct contact
with the snowpack.
3. ALWAYS buckle and secure all of the straps of the AvaLung Pack before
entering avalanche-prone terrain, paying close attention to the waistbelt
buckle and the sternum strap buckle.
The internal AvaLung tubing sleeves and pockets must not be used to4.
store gear or anything other than the unit and tubing.
Self-test the AvaLung system by breathing through the mouthpiece5.
before each use and each run to ensure the airway is not blocked or
restricted. Check your mouthpiece frequently, especially after each run
or fall; it must be clear of snow, ice and debris.
6. ALWAYS have your mouthpiece in the ready position or securely in your
mouth when in terrain where avalanches may occur and when in deep
or unstable snow conditions. A mouthpiece that is stored in its pocket
cannot be used in the event of a burial in an avalanche, tree-well or deep
snow. Practice riding or skiing with the mouthpiece in your mouth. You can
familiarize yourself with the feel and best positioning of the mouthpiece.
Also, practice securing it in your mouth, with and without the use of
your hands; this will enable you to learn the steps necessary to place the
mouthpiece securely in your mouth while actively skiing, riding, falling or
reacting to an avalanche, a plunge into a tree-well or a fall in deep snow.
Nose clips have been provided to eliminate the potential for nasal breathing7.
and to satisfy the Personal Protective Equipment Directive (89/686/EEC),
Annex II, Section 3.10.1. When buried by snow, exhalation through the nose
will increase the concentration of carbon dioxide in front of the user’s face
and potentially around the AvaLung intake valve. This can recycle carbon
dioxide to the user, decreasing the effectiveness of the device. Technically,

users of nose clips may significantly reduce the possibility of carbon dioxide
contaminated air in the facial area due to nasal exhalation; however, the
violent nature of many avalanches may make it impractical to get the nose
clips in place and potentially difficult to keep them on even if they are on
prior to being caught in the avalanche.
To ensure that the device will function effectively without the added8.
benefit of nose clips, Black Diamond has conducted controlled tests
of the AvaLung without nose clips, and had over 20 test burials which
lasted 60 minutes or longer. Without the AvaLung, test subjects typically
encounter serious medical problems within five to ten minutes. If you
become buried without the nose clips on, remain calm and focus on
exhaling only through the AvaLung.
Once in your mouth, the mouthpiece9. MUST be securely held in place for
the AvaLung system to function properly. In the case of an impending or
actual burial, keep the mouthpiece firmly in your mouth (holding it firmly
in your mouth with your teeth will improve your chances of keeping the
mouthpiece securely positioned in your mouth). Your mouth must remain
closed to prevent loss or displacement of the mouthpiece and to avoid snow
entering your mouth. Snow in your mouth could result in a blocked airway
and eliminate the effectiveness of the AvaLung system or your ability to insert
it in your mouth. If buried, keep your lips closed around the mouthpiece,
keeping it securely sealed and only breathe through your mouth. If jaw
muscles tire and you are stationary, you can move the mouthpiece from
between your teeth to the front of your gums but always keep your lips sealed
to prevent exhausted air from being expired in front of your face.
NOTE: Failure to have a secure mouthpiece placement may result in your
failure to be able to properly use the AvaLung system.
When the Avalung system is not in direct use and there is no10.
avalanche related risk to the user, the mouthpiece may be stored in the
mouthpiece pocket. When anticipating the need to use the AvaLung,
the mouthpiece MUST be either in your mouth or in the ready position.
When in the properly adjusted ready position, the mouthpiece should
be capable of being quickly inserted into your mouth.
The AvaLung system should be dried after each use. It should also be11.
cleaned regularly, before being stored and at the start of each season
before use (see Cleaning instructions).

12. NEVER share your AvaLung due to the possible transmission of
respiratory disease, bacteria or viruses.
People with chronic respiratory diseases my have difficulty using the AvaLung.13.
14. DO NOT carry skis over your left shoulder while wearing the pack, as
they may damage the AvaLung tubing located along the top of the left
shoulder strap.
15. DO NOT lift the pack onto your shoulders using the left shoulder strap.
NOTE: When making adjustments to the mouthpiece, or when storing it,
be careful not to crush or damage the tubing. Also, care should be used to
protect the AvaLung unit from unnecessary strain or abuse.
Tips for use while buried in snow
Make every effort to remain calm.1.
Focus on your breathing. Breathe with controlled full, deep and regular breaths.2.
It is important that you firmly seal your lips around the mouthpiece. You3.
must exhale and inhale completely into the AvaLung; otherwise, you may
compromise the AvaLung’s performance. Use your lips to make a seal
around the mouthpiece.
Over time, you may settle into the snow and form an air cavity above4.
you. If this occurs, you should attempt to press either the AvaLung intake
area or the exhalation tube into the snow. This may help you to continue
to maintain separation of carbon dioxide from your inhaled breath.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
DO NOT modify or change the AvaLung Pack in any way. After each use, allow
your AvaLung Pack to dry thoroughly before putting it away or storing it. Storage
should always be out of the sun in a dry environment away from heat. Keep the
AvaLung Pack away from corrosive materials such as battery acids or solvents.
Routinely inspect the intake and exhaust tubing/ hoses for collapse.
DO NOT place near a high heat source or expose to prolonged sunlight.
ALWAYS keep the AvaLung Pack breathing tube in its stored position
when not being worn.
Avoid piling other gear on top of your AvaLung pack, while in storage or in
transit. When traveling, take care to avoid crushing the AvaLung tubing.

CLEANING
AvaLung Unit Care:
Clean the AvaLung unit after every three days of use and whenever it will be
stored for more than three days after being used. High-level disinfection is
required if an AvaLung is to be shared by different users.
To remove the AvaLung unit:
Open the pack’s main compartment and completely unzip the two zippers that
give access to the AvaLung exhaust tube. Separate the hook and loop tabs and
remove the orange exhaust end connector from the orange exhaust manifold.
If necessary, pry the connector out with a flat screwdriver, being careful not to
damage the parts.
Rotate the valve box in the left
shoulder strap 90° so that it will
fit through the opening in the
back panel of the backpack. Pull
the valve box and inlet tubing
through the back panel and work
the mouthpiece through the
shoulder strap at the same time.
Do not remove the mesh cover
on the valve box during cleaning. (see illustration)
If you will be using the backpack without the AvaLung installed, place the
plug into the exhaust manifold.
To reinstall the AvaLung unit: Guide the mouthpiece through the shoulder
strap sleeve from inside the pack while pushing the black valve box through
the vertical slot in the back panel. With the valve box in place in the shoulder
strap, rotate it 90° so that the intake holes are facing the outside of the pack
and the mouthpiece opening faces the center. Thread the exhaust tubing
with the orange end connector through the zippered covers and insert the
exhaust end connector into the orange exhaust manifold – pushing it firmly
into the manifold until it snaps and locks in place. Zip the upper cover
closed, fasten the hook and loop tabs in the side pocket, position the tube
in the sleeve and zip the sleeve closed. Both the intake and exhaust tubing
should be fully compressed when reinstalled. Breath through the AvaLung,
checking that air comes out the exhaust port on the outside of the pack.

FOR GENERAL CLEANING AND REMOVAL OF MOLD
AND ODOR:
◆Soak the AvaLung unit for two minutes in a hypochlorite solution (50
ppm chlorine) made by adding approximately one milliliter of laundry
bleach to one liter of water (1/4 tsp bleach to 1 qt H2O) at 43 °C (110 °F).
◆Alternately, soak your AvaLung unit for two minutes in an aqueous
solution of iodine (50 ppm iodine) made by adding approximately 0.8
milliliters of tincture of iodine (6-8 grams ammonium and/or potassium
iodide/100 cc of 45% alcohol) to one liter of water at 43 °C (110 °F).
◆Shake vigorously and drain solution.
◆Rinse multiple times with clean, warm water.
◆Drain, shake out any remaining water and dry the AvaLung.
◆DO NOT machine wash your AvaLung.
◆DO NOT open the mesh filtration bag. Doing so damages the unit and
voids the warranty.
◆After inspecting or cleaning the AvaLung, carefully insert it back into the pack.
FOR HIGH LEVEL DISINFECTION
Sharing an AvaLung requires that it be thoroughly disinfected between
users. Effective high-level disinfection entails proper pre-cleaning, use
of an appropriate disinfectant, use of test strips, multiple fresh water
rinses, proper training, proper handling of the agents, proper ventilation,
proper disposal of used chemicals and a record-keeping system. Black
Diamond recommends the use of Cidex OPA. Contact Black Diamond
or visit the Advanced Sterilization Products website (www.cidex.com) for
more information. If you are unsure of the effectiveness of your cleaning
procedure, do not share your AvaLung.
Important: Always position the AvaLung in the shoulder strap so that the
mouthpiece faces towards your mouth when wearing the pack.
Pack Care:
Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent. Rinse well. Do not bleach.
Hang dry.
LIMITATIONS AND ADDITIONAL WARNINGS
The very nature, size and violence of an avalanche reduces the circumstances

in which you can use the AvaLung effectively. If you are caught in an avalanche,
you risk dying as a result of trauma such as head injuries, spinal injuries,
crushing injuries, hitting trees or rocks, being buried so tightly that your chest
cannot expand or retract in order to breathe, being carried through a forest
or over rock or ice cliffs, hypothermia and other causes of death. Even if the
AvaLung mouthpiece is securely in your mouth at the onset of an avalanche,
the violence of an avalanche, reactive yelling or screaming or panic or a
combination of these may very well dislodge the mouthpiece. Without a secure
mouthpiece, and a firm seal, the AvaLung will not properly function to provide
you with an air supply if you are buried and otherwise survive the avalanche.
Even if you survive an avalanche or plunge into a tree well with the AvaLung
mouthpiece securely in place, you could die of hypothermia or asphyxiation
depending upon the amount of clothing you wear and how long your
recovery takes. The AvaLung will not protect you from injury or death
caused by trauma, hypothermia, misuse, poor judgment or other inherent
risks and dangers of avalanches, tree wells, deep snow and mountains. The
AvaLung cannot make prudent decisions for you and by itself cannot save
you if you are buried. If you are rendered unconscious, you may not be able
to properly utilize the AvaLung even if the mouthpiece is in your mouth.
The AvaLung will not clear debris should you vomit into it.
The AvaLung will NOT work underwater.
Respiration through the AvaLung in cold air can cause ice to form inside
the device’s tubing and housing. Ice buildup could potentially restrict
airflow or impede proper function of the valves. As a general rule, do not
use the AvaLung at temperatures colder than –20°C (-4° F). If you see or
suspect ice inside the AvaLung, clear the device by shaking most of the ice
out of the mouthpiece or by thawing the ice and shaking the water out of
each end of the unit. If the AvaLung becomes blocked by ice or the valves
do not function due to icing, it must be warmed and cleared before it can
be effective. If the user becomes buried by snow, temperatures within the
snowpack will be warmer than the air temperature especially once heat from
the user warms the surrounding snow. This may help reduce additional
icing problems and potentially even thaw the device, but only an AvaLung
which is functioning before burial can be relied on during a burial. Since
the AvaLung is a breathing assistance device, there is always the remote
possibility that respiratory diseases could be transmitted if you share or

lend your AvaLung. Your AvaLung is personal and should not be shared
without being properly disinfected between users.
People having chronic respiratory diseases may have difficulty using the
AvaLung.
INSPECTION AND RETIREMENT
Thoroughly inspect the AvaLung monthly during each season of use,
whenever you remove the AvaLung from the harness for cleaning and
whenever you suspect physical damage to the device. Inspect the Avalung
system mouthpiece and exposed tubing and self-test the device by breathing
through it before and after each use. Retire it immediately if:
◆There are cracks, holes, distortion or breaks of any kind in a plastic component
◆The mesh material covering the valve housing is ripped, threadbare, or
excessively worn
◆There is significant crushing or discoloration of any of the tubing
If an AvaLung is worn but not obviously damaged, it still may be ready for
retirement. When in doubt, retire your AvaLung.
Deciding when to retire an Avalung system requires careful judgment and
a conservative approach on your part based upon your history of use of the
AvaLung (and abuse, if any). Any damage or excessive wear or tear requires
immediate retirement. Pay particular attention to the mesh filtration fabric
that covers the valve housing inside the harness. Evidence of any holes
or wear on this fabric calls for immediate retirement. The recommended
maximum lifetime of the AvaLung is five years.
Anytime you retire an AvaLung, destroy it to prevent future use.
ADOPTION
We strongly discourage the use of any secondhand gear. You must know the
history of your AvaLung to be able to trust it.
NOTE: If you get caught in an avalanche while wearing an AvaLung Pack,
please contact us. We want to hear about your experience.

The following marks are found on the AvaLung Pack:
BLACK DIAMOND: Name of the manufacturer.

AvaLung: Name of the personal protective equipment.
: Black Diamond’s logo.
:This mark is the CE mark of conformity and indicates
fulfillment of the requirements of Article llA of the Personal Protective
Equipment Directive (89/686/EEC). Type testing and monitoring of Black
Diamond’s AvaLung products is conducted by DEKRA EXAM GmbH,
Dinnendahlstrasse 9, 44809 Bochum, Germany, notified body number 0158.
Black Diamond is an ISO 9001 certified company.
Serial Number label: A tag attached onto the lung unit which gives the serial
number that references the manufacturing order number.
Size Label: A tag sewn onto the backpack which states the size of the
product (small/medium or medium/large).
ATTENTION Label: The abbreviated instructions for use of the AvaLung as
well as the limitations of the device and additional warnings.
LIMITED WARRANTY
We warrant for one year from purchase date and only to the original retail
buyer (Buyer) that our products (Products) are free from defects in material
and workmanship. For headlamps our warranty is for three years. If Buyer
discovers a covered defect, Buyer should return the Product to the place of
purchase. In the event that this is not possible, return the Product to us
at the address provided. The Product will be repaired or replaced at our
discretion. That is the extent of our liability under this Warranty and, upon
expiration of the applicable warranty period, all such liability shall terminate.
We reserve the right to require proof of purchase for all warranty claims.
Warranty Exclusions:
We do not warranty Products against normal wear and tear (such as ski
edge cuts and abrasions, outsole wear, etc.), unauthorized modifications
or alterations, improper use, improper maintenance, accident, misuse,
negligence, damage, or if the Product is used for a purpose for which it was
not designed. This Warranty gives you specific rights, and you may also have
other rights which vary from state to state. Except for expressly stated in
this Warranty, we shall not be liable for direct, indirect, incidental, or other
types of damages arising out of, or resulting from the use of Product. This
Warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, including, but

not limited to, implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular

À PROPOS DE L’AVALUNG
L’AvaLung de Black Diamond permet de séparer l’air expiré de l’air inspiré
par une personne ensevelie. Le manteau neigeux contient suffisamment
d’oxygène pour prolonger de manière significative l’état de conscience si
cet oxygène n’est pas contaminé par le CO2 expiré. Le mécanisme de valves
breveté de l’AvaLung permet d’extraire l’air arrivant à proximité de l’embout

Un AvaLung ne peut protéger son utilisateur de la puissance d’une

de temps pour les recherches. Pour fonctionner correctement, l’AvaLung
de Black Diamond doit impérativement être porté par-dessus tout type de
vêtement. Si elle est ensevelie, la victime doit se concentrer sur l’embout
en s’efforçant de le maintenir serré entre ses dents. Le fait de ne respirer
qu’à moitié ou en laissant passer de l’air autour de l’embout contamine
la zone d’inspiration de l’air avec du CO2 et réduit le temps de survie. En
présence de terrains avalancheux, sortez et ajustez l’embout de manière
à le positionner directement soit en face de votre bouche soit dans votre
bouche. Assurez-vous que votre Sac à dos ou Harnais AvaLung est bien fixé
en attachant toutes les boucles et en les réglant correctement.
Le système AvaLung de Black Diamond ne se substitue en aucun cas à votre
capacité de jugement ou à votre expérience de la randonnée. Vous devez
comprendre les risques liés aux conditions avalancheuses et pratiquer

UTILISATION DU SAC À DOS AVALUNG
REMARQUE : Une utilisation correcte du Sac à dos AvaLung est
indispensable à son bon fonctionnement.
Avant d’utiliser le Sac à dos AvaLung, vous devez IMPERATIVEMENT ôter
le film plastique qui protège l’embout. N’utilisez pas votre nouveau Sac
AvaLung s’il manque le film de protection : veuillez le rapporter au magasin
où l’achat a été effectué.
Le système AvaLung qui est intégré à ce sac est conçu pour être utilisé1.
uniquement avec ce Sac Black Diamond. NE PAS UTILISER ce système
AvaLung séparément ou avec un autre sac à dos. Le module AvaLung de
ce sac à dos ne peut être utilisé dans le système de harnais AvaLung II.
Portez2. TOUJOURS votre Sac AvaLung par-dessus toutes vos autres
couches de vêtements. Pour que le système de l'AvaLung fonctionne
correctement, il faut qu'il soit en contact direct avec le manteau neigeux.
3. TOUJOURS boucler et serrer fermement toutes les sangles du Sac
AvaLung avant de pénétrer dans une zone avalancheuse, vérifier en

qu'il n'est pas bloqué ou obstrué. Vérifiez fréquemment votre embout, en
particulier après chaque course ou chaque chute et nettoyez la neige, la
glace et les débris éventuels qui pourraient entraver son fonctionnement.
Gardez6. TOUJOURS l'embout en position "prêt" ou tenez-le serré dans
votre bouche lorsque vous pénétrez dans une zone avalancheuse ou en
neige instable ou profonde. Un embout qui aurait été rentré dans son étui
ne peut pas être utilisé en cas d'ensevelissement sous une avalanche,
au fond d'une cavité ou en neige profonde. Entraînez-vous à skier ou à
surfer avec l'embout dans la bouche. Vous pouvez vous habituer à son

contact et trouver la position la plus confortable. Entraînez-vous aussi à le
positionner dans votre bouche, avec ou sans les mains : vous apprendrez
ainsi progressivement à serrer fermement l'embout dans la bouche
tout en skiant, surfant, chutant ou réagissant au déclenchement d'une
avalanche ou d'une chute en neige profonde ou dans une cavité.
Un pince-nez est fourni avec l'AvaLung dans le but d'éliminer les7.
risques de respiration nasale et de satisfaire aux exigences de la
Directive relative aux Equipements de Protection Individuelle (89/686/
CEE), Annexe II, Section 3.10.1. En cas d'ensevelissement sous la neige,
l'expiration par le nez fait augmenter la concentration en dioxyde de
carbone au niveau du visage de l'utilisateur et éventuellement autour de
la valve d'inspiration de l'AvaLung. Ceci peut entraîner un recyclage du
dioxyde de carbone par l'utilisateur et diminuer l'efficacité du système.
Techniquement, il est possible de réduire de manière significative cette
éventuelle contamination de l'air par le dioxyde de carbone au niveau
du visage due à l'expiration nasale en utilisant un pince-nez, cependant
en raison de la violence de certaines avalanches, il peut être difficile de
mettre le pince-nez et de le maintenir en place même si cette opération
a été effectuée avant le déclenchement de l'avalanche.
Pour s'assurer que le système fonctionne efficacement sans l'aide8.
additionnelle d'un pince-nez, Black Diamond a mené sous contrôle
une série de tests de l'AvaLung sans utiliser de pince-nez, soit plus
de 20 tests d'ensevelissement d'une durée de 60 minutes et au-delà.

problèmes médicaux au bout de 5 à 10 minutes. Si vous êtes enseveli

IMPERATIVEMENT tenu en place pour que le système AvaLung fonctionne
correctement. En cas d'ensevelissement imminent ou avéré, vous devez
tenir fermement l'embout dans votre bouche (en serrant fortement
l'embout avec les dents, vous augmenterez les chances de garder l'embout
correctement placé dans votre bouche). Vous devez rester la bouche fermée
afin d'éviter de perdre ou de déplacer l'embout ainsi que d'ingérer de la
neige. En effet, ceci peut causer l'obstruction d'une voie respiratoire et
limiter considérablement l'efficacité du système AvaLung ou votre propre

capacité à insérer l'embout dans votre bouche. Si vous êtes enseveli, tenez
vos lèvres fermement serrées autour de l’embout, de la manière la plus
jointive possible et respirez seulement à travers votre bouche. Si les muscles
de votre mâchoire se fatiguent et que vous êtes immobile, vous pouvez faire
bouger l’embout entre vos dents et l’avant de vos gencives mais toujours en
gardant vos lèvres fermement serrées afin d’éviter de rejeter l’air expiré en
face de votre visage.
REMARQUE : Un mauvais positionnement de l'embout peut vous empêcher
d'utiliser correctement le système AvaLung.
Lorsque vous n'utilisez pas directement l'AvaLung et qu'il n'y a pas de10.
risque d'avalanche pour l'utilisateur, il convient de rentrer l'embout dans
son étui. Lorsque vous anticipez le besoin d'utiliser l'AvaLung, l'embout
doit être IMPERATIVEMENT soit dans la bouche soit en position "prêt".
Lorsque correctement placé en position "prêt", l'embout doit pouvoir
être rapidement inséré dans la bouche.
Le système AvaLung doit être séché après chaque utilisation. Il convient11.
également de le nettoyer régulièrement, avant de le ranger et au
début de chaque saison avant utilisation (veuillez vous reporter aux
instructions de nettoyage).
12. NE JAMAIS partager votre AvaLung en raison des risques de
transmission de maladies respiratoires, de bactéries ou de virus.
Les personnes atteintes de maladies respiratoires chroniques peuvent13.
avoir des difficultés à utiliser l’AvaLung.
14. NE PAS transporter de skis sur votre épaule gauche lorsque vous portez
le Sac AvaLung, ceci risquerait d’endommager le conduit de l’AvaLung
qui passe le long de la partie supérieure de la bretelle gauche.
15. NE PAS hisser le sac sur vos épaules en le tenant par la bretelle gauche.
REMARQUE : Lorsque vous ajustez l'embout ou que vous le rentrez dans
son étui, prenez soin de ne pas écraser ou endommager le conduit. Prenez
soin également de protéger le module AvaLung de tout choc ou mauvais
traitement inutile.
Conseils d’utilisation en cas d’ensevelissement sous la neige
Efforcez-vous de rester calme.1.

Concentrez-vous sur votre respiration. Respirez à fond, par inspirations2.
profondes, régulières et maîtrisées.
Il est important que vous mainteniez vos lèvres fermement serrées3.
et de manière jointive autour de l'embout. Vous devez inspirer et
expirer exclusivement par l'AvaLung, le cas échéant, vous risquez de
compromettre le bon fonctionnement de l'AvaLung. Utilisez vos lèvres
pour serrer l’embout de manière jointive.
Au bout d'un moment, il est possible que vous puissiez vous4.
positionner dans la neige et constituer une poche d'air au-dessus
de vous. Si tel est le cas, essayez d'enfoncer dans la neige soit la
zone d'inspiration de l'AvaLung soit le tube d'expiration. Ceci vous
aidera à maintenir séparé le dioxyde de carbone de l'air inspiré.
PRÉCAUTIONS ET ENTRETIEN
Ne PAS modifier ni transformer le Sac AvaLung de quelque façon que ce
soit. Après chaque utilisation, laisser sécher le Sac AvaLung complètement
avant de le ranger. Toujours stocker à l’abri des rayons du soleil dans un
endroit sec et à l’écart des sources de chaleur. Tenir le Sac AvaLung à
l’écart des substances corrosives tels que l’acide de batterie et les solvants.
Inspecter régulièrement le conduit d’inspiration et d’expiration et l’embout
pour vérifier leur bon positionnement et fonctionnement.
NE PAS placer près d’une source de forte chaleur ni exposer aux rayons du
soleil pendant une période prolongée.
TOUJOURS placer le tube de respiration de l’AvaLung en position rentrée
lorsque vous ne portez pas l’AvaLung.
Eviter d’empiler du matériel en cours de stockage ou en transit sur le
dessus de votre Sac AvaLung. Lors des périodes de transport, prenez soin
de ne pas écraser le conduit de l’AvaLung.
NETTOYAGE
Comment nettoyer votre module AvaLung :
Nettoyez l'AvaLung au bout de trois jours d'utilisation et à chaque fois que
vous le stockez plus de trois jours sans l'utiliser. Une désinfection approfondie
est nécessaire si vous prêtez votre AvaLung à d'autres utilisateurs.

Pour ôter votre module AvaLung :
Ouvrir le compartiment principal du sac et ouvrir complètement les deux
fermetures éclair qui donnent accès au conduit d’expiration de l’AvaLung.
Défaire les attaches et séparer le connecteur orange situé au bout du
tuyau d’expiration du collecteur orange d’expiration. Si nécessaire, faire
sortir le connecteur à l’aide d’un tournevis plat en prenant soin de ne pas
endommager les pièces.
Tourner le boîtier des valves de la bretelle gauche à 90° de manière à le faire
passer dans l’ouverture du panneau dorsal du sac. Extirper le boîtier des
valves et le conduit d’entrée par le panneau dorsal tout en faisant passer
l’embout dans la bretelle. Ne pas ôter le filet en mailles qui recouvre le
boîtier des valves pendant l’opération de nettoyage (Voir Illustration).
Si vous avez à utiliser le sac à dos sans l’AvaLung en place, placez le
connecteur dans le collecteur d’expiration.
Pour réinstaller le module AvaLung : guider l’embout dans le manchon de la
bretelle à l’intérieur du sac tout en poussant le boîtier noir des valves dans
le logement vertical du panneau dorsal. Une fois le boîtier des valves en
place dans la bretelle, le tourner à 90° de manière à positionner les orifices
d’inspiration vers l’extérieur du sac et l’ouverture de l’embout vers le centre
du sac. Enfiler le conduit d’expiration avec le connecteur orange à son
extrémité dans les logements zippés et insérer le connecteur situé au bout
du tuyau d’expiration dans le collecteur orange d’expiration – le pousser
fermement dans le collecteur jusqu’à ce qu’il s’emboîte d’un coup sec.
Refermer la fermeture éclair supérieure, boucler les attaches de la poche
latérale, positionner le tube dans le manchon puis refermer la fermeture
éclair du manchon. Le conduit d’inspiration et le conduit d’expiration
doivent être entièrement repliés lorsque réinstallés. Respirer par l’AvaLung
et vérifier si l’air sort du conduit d’expiration sur l’extérieur du sac à dos.
POUR NETTOYER ET ÉLIMINER DEPÔTS ET ODEURS :
Faire tremper l'AvaLung pendant deux minutes dans une solution◆
d'hypochlorite (50 ppm de chlore) obtenue en additionnant environ un
millilitre d'eau de Javel à un litre d'eau (1/4 cc. d'eau de Javel pour un
litre d'H2O) à 43° C.
Alternativement, faire tremper votre AvaLung pendant deux minutes◆
dans une solution aqueuse d'iode (50 ppm d'iode) obtenue en
additionnant environ 0,8 millilitre de teinture d'iode (6-8 grammes

d'iodure d'ammonium et/ou de potassium/100 cm3 d'alcool à 45 %) à
un litre d'eau à 43° C.
Remuer vigoureusement et vider le mélange.

Rincer abondamment avec de l'eau chaude et claire.◆
Egoutter et secouer pour évacuer toute eau résiduelle et faire sécher◆
l'AvaLung.
◆NE PAS laver l'AvaLung en machine.
◆NE PAS ouvrir le sac de filtration en filet mailles. Une telle opération
endommagerait le produit et entraînerait l'annulation de la garantie.
Après avoir inspecté et nettoyé l’AvaLung, le réinsérer soigneusement◆
dans le sac.
POUR UNE DÉSINFECTION APPROFONDIE
Prêter un AvaLung exige que vous le désinfectiez soigneusement entre chaque
utilisateur. Une désinfection approfondie efficace suppose un pré-nettoyage
correct, l'utilisation d'un désinfectant adéquat, l'utilisation de bandelettes
réactives, plusieurs rinçages à l'eau claire, une bonne manipulation des
différents agents, une ventilation correcte, l'élimination convenable des
produits chimiques utilisés, un système de suivi des opérations sans
oublier les compétences nécessaires pour effectuer l'ensemble de cette
procédure. Black Diamond recommande l'utilisation de Cidex OPA. Pour plus

Important : Toujours positionner l’AvaLung dans la bretelle de manière à
placer l’embout en face de votre bouche lorsque vous portez le Sac.
Entretien du Sac :
Laver à la main dans de l’eau froide avec un savon doux. Bien rincer. Ne pas
javelliser. Suspendre pour faire sécher.
LIMITES ET AVERTISSEMENTS
La nature, l'ampleur et la violence même d'une avalanche réduisent les
conditions d'utilisation optimale de l'AvaLung. Si vous êtes pris dans une
avalanche, vous pouvez succomber des suites de traumatismes tels que
fractures du crâne, blessures à la colonne, contusions, collisions contre
des rochers ou des arbres, compression du thorax dû à l'ensevelissement,
