With the AMS42/AMS84 (Ampli-
fier Measurement System) BMC
Messsysteme GmbH introduces a
compact 19'' amplifier system in
19'' format accommodating
... 8 (AMS42) or 16 (AMS84)
5B modules ... .
With the 8-channel extension
AMS-EXT8 the number of chan-
nels can optionally be increased to
16 (AMS42) or 32 (AMS84) at the
maximum.
The wide range of available 5B
modules provides for the solution
of most specific measuring tasks
with the AMS42/AMS84.
In particular, the 5B modules al-
low
... potential-free measurement ...,
which is essential for many appli-
cations.
If connected to a PC data acquisi-
tion system or logger, the
AMS42/AMS84 represents a uni-
versal and compact instrument for
the acquisition of measured data.
Besides that, the AMS84 can be
incorporated in a
... 19" 3 height module rack... .
The AMS42/AMS84 is equipped
with
… 8 (AMS42) or 16 (AMS84)
individual cassettes ... .
The relevant 5B module is moun-
ted on the cassette. The suitable
input connector at the cassette
bracket guarantees for the relevant
connection to be available when
exchanging the cassette.
… Power (9-45V) …
is supplied by an external DC
power unit.
Provided with a metal housing the
AMS42/AMS84 impresses with
robustness and is perfect for mo-
bile and rough use.
In addition the AMS42 is equip-
ped with skid-proof retractable
feet.
The plug-in cassettes and all con-
nections are screwed tightly.
A handle (AMS-HANDLE) is op-
tionally available.

AMS42/AMS84
The pin assignment of the module
backplane incorporated in the
AMS42/AMS84 corresponds with
those of the 5B modules of Burr-
Brown and Analog Devices, Inc.,
however, an additional 0EXC pin
has been introduced.
Measurements can be effected on
various potentials. The potential
deviations, however, should not
exceed 60V DC (according to
VDE Association of German Elec-
trical Engineers). The outputs
share the same frame potential.
The AMS42/AMS84 is also avail-
able with an integrated data acqui-
sition system (LAN or USB).

2 Installation
Equip the AMS42/AMS84 with the plug-in cassettes (see chapter 4.4) carrying the required 5B modules. Carefully
push the cassette along the guide bars of the relevant slot until the 7-pole pin connector of the cassette and the pins of
the 5B module are plugged into the corresponding connectors on the AMS backplane.
If using the option AMS-EXT8 the additional cassettes are mounted on the back of the device.
For a tight installation fix the bracket at both ends with screws to the housing. Bridge unneeded slots by a blank bracket
(AMS-K-BLANK) to protect the AMS42/AMS84 against outside influences.
If the AMS84 is mounted to a 19'' rack system, first the relevant input wiring should be prepared before attaching the
device to the rack system with screws.
Now connect your data acquisition system to the 37-pole Sub-D female connector and an external power unit to the 3-
pole DIN coupling for 9-45V power supply (use a supply cable with a cross sectional area >1mm2). Finally turn on the
AMS42/AMS84 by pressing the switch to "1" (ON).
The signals are connected at the specific female connector of the respective AMS cassette bracket.
•To change the cassettes the power of the AMS device must be turned off!
•If the AMS is operated standalone additional grounding to enhance shielding is recommended but not man-
datory.

3.1 Switch and LED
With the switch the AMS42/AMS84 is turned on (press "1") and
off (press "0"). The LED directly below indicates the operation of
the device.
3.2 Power supply
Via the 3-pole DIN plug the AMS42/AMS84 is supplied with
power (9-45V DC).

3.3 Analog channels
The AMS42/AMS84 allows for the connection of 8 (AMS42)
or 16 (AMS42) analog signals. They are connected to the
amplifier inputs available at the respective connectors of the
cassette brackets. Their assignment is illustrated in the data
sheet of the AMS-K-xxx cassettes. To connect a PC data acqui-
sition system these analog outputs are led out to the 37-pole
Sub-D socket.

•The housing of the 37-pole Sub-D socket is connected to the AMS housing (and ground eventually).
•If the device features 16 or more channels, the ground of the first eight channels is not electrically connected
to the ground of the next ( and further) eight channels.
Depending on the application, the shield of the analog input cables can be applied to ground or 0V. Be sure to connect
at one end of the cable only. Run the signal ground separately if possible. Lay input cable separately if possible.
The output cable can be laid with the same signal ground and shield in the case of short distances (Long distances may
lead to cross talk!).

4 AMS backplane
The AMS backplane provides 8 slots for 5B modules and the AMS-K-xxx plug-in cassettes carrying the 5B modules. In
the AMS84 two backplanes are integrated. If the optional add-on AMS-EXT8 is used, 8 (AMS42) or 16 (AMS84) slots
each are available at the front and at the back of the device.

4.1 Ground-to-ground resistance
The ground-to-ground resistance is needed when the output ground is not electrically connected with the power ground.
If the jumper (see fig. above) on the analog backplane is closed, the output switches of the modules are switched
through.
In the case of electrically connected systems (e.g. PC), this jumper represents a high-resistance bridge (1kΩ) and
may generate a hum loop!
4.2 Fuse
The fusing of the AMS backplane is effected on the backplane (see fig. chapter 4) with one reversible semi-conductor
fuse. In case of overload it turns of. To make the fuse work effectively again, first remove the cause for overload before
disconnecting the power supply of the AMS42/AMS84.

4.3 Module pin assignment
The figure on the right shows the pin assignment of the 5B module slots on
the AMS backplane. It corresponds with the 5B standard of Analog De-
vices®, BURR BROWN®, etc.
An additional 0EX PIN (Pin 7) has been introduced, which is particularly
suitable for ungrounded shielding or as reference point for symmetrical
supply. This is a bmcm specific assignment (MA-xxx), in modules by Ana-
log Devices®and BURR BROWN®this pin is not connected.

4.4 Using the cassettes
The amplifier system can individually be equipped with 8
(AMS42) or 16 (AMS84) plug-in cassettes. With the option AMS-
EXT8 a package of 8 extra channels can be added, so that the
AMS42 can be extended to 16 channels, the AMS84 to 32 chan-
nels at the maximum.
Each cassette is equipped with the relevant 5B module and suitable
input connector, thus providing the relevant connection to be avail-
able when exchanging the cassette.
Various types are available and almost all of them can be com-
bined with the relevant 5B modules. In case of thermocouple cas-
settes a cold junction compensation can be installed on the cas-
sette. In the case of current modules, a relevant shunt can be in-
stalled. For detailed information about the plug-in cassettes please
see the AMS-K-xxx data sheet.
The cassettes are connected to the AMS backplane via 7-pole pin
connectors, leading the input signals connected at the cassette
bracket to the backplane. The assignment of the 7-pole female
connector on the board is as follows:
