What is the BMW Key Card?
The card is a fully functioning vehicle key that can be used to open, lock
and start the vehicle. It is a part of the BMW Digital Key for newly
launched models of G05 and higher.
How does the Key Card work?
The Key Card uses the NFC technology (Near Field Communication).
To open and close the vehicle, hold the activated card in the proximity of
the NFC reader in the door handle on the driver's side. The engine can
be started as soon as the Key Card is placed in the Smartphone tray.
There is only one Key Card useable per vehicle.
What do you need to observe as Authorised BMW Retailer?
The Key Card is in the vehicle on delivery. There is a vehicle
identification number stored on the card.
Please ensure safe storage with assignment to the vehicle and handing
over to your customer on delivery.
How is the Key Card activated?
Every Key Card is connected to the related vehicle.
The customer has only to activate it via iDrive.
It covers all use cases in which the customer doesn’t
want to pass along the smartphone (e.g. breakdown or
workshop process, Valet Parking).

ACTIVATION
1. Place the Key card on the NFC reader pad located on the
center consoler. (NFC reader may have a different symbol
depending on the vehicle options)
2. For initial activation a valid remote control key needs to
be present in the vehicle.
Follow prompts through the iDrive or manually access
settings under Settings Door Access BMW Digital Key

DIGITAL KEY.

1. This additional function can only be used via
the configuration interface (see figure 1) with
SW version v.31
2. To do this, the KeyReader Plus must be
connected to a Windows computer via USB
and the KeyReader Plus USB driver must be
installed.
3. Then please insert the following IP-Adress
(http://192.168.17.17) in a released Internet
Browser for ISPI Next.
4. A new button "NFC KeyCard Reading Mode"
is available at the bottom of the configuration
page. This puts the device in the new operating
mode.
5. In this operating mode, normal key reading and
the transmission of key data is turned off.
6. The operating mode can be seen on the device
by the fact that the middle LED flashes white.

1. If an NFC Key-Card is now placed on the device and
the "read VIN" button is activated, the VIN is
displayed on the Windows computer.
2. This VIN is only displayed in the new mask (figure 3)
and will not be transfered to any server or PC.
3. The KeyReader Plus returns to normal operating
mode by using the “EXIT”button” or any kind of reset
of the device.

OPERATION AND DOOR ACCESS.
−Place an active BMW Key Card on the Driver’s door handle
and hold it until doors unlocked. (Only the Driver’s door
handle is equipped with and NFC reader)
−Each time the key card is placed on the door handle it will
switch lock to unlock or vice versa.

−Place an activated BMW Key card on the NFC tray for engine
start.
−Press the Start/Stop button

OTHER CUSTOMER CONCERNS
−User error
−BMW Key Card not activated or blocked.
−Incorrect Key card or swapped from another vehicle.
−Quick tap on door handle or incorrect position of the Card at
the door handle.
−Activation of the Key card while having remote control
recognition issues.
−Damage Key Card
−Door handle NFC reader faulty or damage wiring.
−Fault :D90D52 -NFC-Reader exterior TAGE DRD: Missing
LIN-Slave.

NORMAL COMMUNICATION SIGNAL
−Constant 12V signal at rest state or 2 minutes after locking
the vehicle.
−Square signal pattern when key card is placed on front of the
reader.

•DOES THE KEY CARD NEEDS TO BE ACTIVATED BEFORE USE? YES.
•DOES THE SECURITY PIN ON CONNECTED DRIVE HAS TO BE SET? NO, PIN ACTIVATION IS ONLY FOR DIGITAL KEY (CELL
PHONE).
•CAN THE DEALER READ THE VIN OUT OF THE KEY CARD? YES, USING THE KEY READER PLUS (SEE SIB 65 17 21)
•IF THE KEY CARD IS LOST OR STOLEN CAN I BLOCKED THE KEY CARD? YES, THE CUSTOMER CAN DELETE ALL DIGITAL
KEYS OR RESET FUNCTION WHICH WILL DISABLE ANY KEY CARD.
•IF THE FUNCTION IS RESET DO YOU NEED TO ORDER A NEW KEY CARD? NO, THE KEY CARD CAN BE RE-ACTIVATED BY
FOLLOWING THE INITIAL INSTRUCTIONS.
•HOW MANY KEY CARDS CAN BE ACTIVE ON THE VEHICLE AT THE SAME TIME? ONLY ONE AT THE TIME.
•IS THE BMW KEY CARD VIN SPECIFIC? YES, THE KEY CARD IS CODED TO THE VEHICLE.
