Mounting:
Yourmotorisnotshippedwithmountingbolts.Useahoistcapableofhandling350poundstosafelyliftthe
enginefromthecrateontotheboat.TheBossHmotorweighsapproximately340pounds.

Alignthemotortothecenteroftheboat,markthemountingholesanddrillusinga3/8”drillbit.Optimum
transomheightis20inches.TransomMUSTbeaminimumof18”andmaximumof21”.
Youmustmountthemotorusingthetopandbottomboltsasshown.Themotormounthasadditional
mountingholestochoosetheremainingtwoboltmountingposition.
Usesiliconetosealtheboltholes.Donotovertightentheboltsandcrushthebolt.
BreakIn:
Thereisnomoreimportantperiodofoperationthanthebreakinofyournewmotor.Motorsshould
bebrokeinovera5hourperiod.Duringthefirstthreehoursyoushouldnotrunfullthrottlefor
morethan5minutes.
Allmodelsshouldrunatvariedthrottlepositionsallowingtheenginetocoolaspartsbreakin.
Model4400requiresavalveadjustmentat5hours.Thisistheowner’sresponsibility.Changetheoilinitially
at25hours.Seepage11forinstructions.Failuretobreakintheengineproperlywillresultinoverheating
andenginedamageandisnotcoveredbywarranty.
FuelandStorage:
ItisimportanttouseafuelstabilizersuchasStabilwhenevertheengineisnotbeingusedformorethantwo
weeks.Thereisnowarrantyonfuelsystemsanddamageincurredbyimproperstorage.
Donotuseaquickdisconnectfuelhosewhichcanrestrictfueldelivery.Youcanuseamarineprimerbulb,
howeverdonotexcessivelypumptheprimerbulbasitcandamagethecarburetor.
Ifyouareusingaforwardmountedfueltank,useaminimumsize5/16”fuelhose.
Useaminimumof87Octanefuelforthe3500,3700EFIand4000models.Useaminimum91Octanefuelfor
themodel4400.Donotrun91OctaneintheBossH3500model.
Handle:
Securetheenginehandleusingaboatstraporbungeestrapto
preventbouncingwhentrailering.Failuretosecurethehandleso
thatitdoesnotbounceduringtraileringwillvoidthemanufacturer
warranty.

TraileringLock:
TheHmotorisequippedwithalockingballtravellockthatholdstheengineinthehorizontal(upanddown
“bouncing”)andaverticallockingbracket(leftandrightmovement)toholdthemotorstraightwhile
trailering.Toengage,removethesafetypinfromtheballtravellocklocatedonthedriversideoftheengine
totherearoftheboatandpulltheballoutwards.
Cautionthisareaisapinchpointsokeephandsandfingersclearof
themechanism.
Totrailer,lowertheenginetoallowtheverticallockingbrackettoberotatedupward.Alignthe
motortoallowtheenginebaseplatetobeloweredintothe“upright”barsonthebracket.Thiswill
secureanyvertical,sidetosidemovementofthemotorwhentrailering.Whileholdingthedrive
upwards,pushthetravellockballandpininwardtolockthedriveinplace.Reinsertthetravellock
safetypin.Hint:Holdupwardsonthedrivetoremovethetravellockpintensiontoinsertthesafety
traileringpin.

Battery:
Useagroup27orlargerbatterywithatleast550crankingamps.
EngineOil:
Yourengineholds2quartsofoil.Weshiptheenginewithnooil,howeversomeoilfromassemblymaybein
theengine.Addoilslowlyandcheckthedipstickwiththeengineinalevelposition.Werecommendusing
5W30or10W30syntheticblendoilinallmodels.
Transmission/LowerUnitOil:
Yourtransmission/lowerunitholdsapproximately3quartsofoil.UseonlyFULLSYNTHETIC75W90oil
(Mobilorequivalent).
StartSwitch:
Thestartkeyswitchislocatedonthefrontoftheengine.Ithasthreepositions,off,onandstart.You
canusetheemergencyshutofftostoptheengine,butyoumustturnthekeytotheoffpositionto
preventbatterydrain.
SafetyLanyard:
Connectthesafetylanyardtoyourclothingorwraparoundyour
wrist.
TrimSwitches:
YourSportHisequippedwithtwotrimswitches,oneonthehandleendandanotheronthesideofthehandle
nearthebaseofthehandle.Thehandleendtrimswitchisusedwhenrunningthemotorandthesidehandle
switchisusedforemergencytrimandfortrimmingtheenginefromtheground.Caution:PinchPointDo
notplaceyourhandsanywherenearthemountwhentrimmingtheengine.
Starting:
Makesureeveryoneisclearofthepropeller.Placetheshifterinneutral.
TheSport3500modelenginechokeislocatedatthefrontleftpositionoftheengine.TheSport4000and
4400modelshaveachokeknobonthecarburetor.SportH3700EFIenginesdonothaveachoke.

HandleAdjust:
Theoperatorhandleisdesignedtofloat(freelymoveupanddown)
whendriving.Whentheenginehitsahardobjectwhenunder
power,thefloatinghandleabsorbstheimpact.
Thehandlestationaryheightcanbeadjustedupwardwiththe
handlestopadjustmentboltlocatedunderthehandlenearthe
engine.
Shifting:
YourSportHisequippedwithashifthandleforneutral,reverseandforwardgears.Theshifthandleis
equippedwithatriggerlocktopreventtheshifterfrommovingintheneutralandforwardgears.Squeeze
thetriggertoshift.Theenginemustberunningtoshifttopreventlinkagedamage.
Caution–Ensuretheengineidlehasbeensetto1200
RPMorlesstoensureeasyshifting,topreventdrive
damageandtoreducesuddenforwardmotionofthe
boatwhichmaycauseinjuryordeathtotheoperatoror
passengers.
Alwaysstopandstartthemotorintheneutralgear.
Alwaysshiftwiththeenginerunningatidlewhichshouldbe
1200RPMorless.
Squeezethetriggerandmovethehandletowardtheenginetogointoreverse.Movethehandletowardsthe
frontoftheboattomoveforward.
Again,donotshiftunlesstheengineisrunning!Shiftingwhentheengineisoffcancausedamagetotheshift
cableandlinkage.
SkegAdjustment:
TillertorqueontheSportHcanbeadjustedbybendingthestainlessskegattachmentwithacrescentwrench.
Benditinsmallincrements.Morebendanglecausesthetillerhandletopullawayfromyou.Lessbendangle
causesthetillerhandletopushintoyou.Donotuseahammertoadjusttheskeg.
Running:
TaketimetolearnwhereallthecontrolsarelocatedontheSportHbackwatermotor.
Placethesafetylanyardonyourwristorclipittoyourclothing.
Starttheengineinneutral.Lowerthepropellerintothewaterwiththetrimcontrolandsafelyplacethe
motoringear.Driveslowlyatfirsttolearnhowtosteerandthrottletheengine.Afterthepreviously
outlinedbreakinperiod,youmayrunthemotoratsustainedfullspeed.Trimthedriveupanddownslowly
sothatthepropellerhubisslightlyvisibleabovethesurface.Yourmotorwillrunbestinthisposition.Itis
notnecessarytotrimdownwhenyoustopandresumetravel.

Youcanlowerthedrivecompletelyformaximumtractioninmud,iceandthicklyvegetatedareas.Trimupto
clearlogsandrocks.
EmergencyStart,Trim,andShiftProcedures:
Placethisemergencyproceduresheetinyourboattoolbox.Locateandtesttheemergencyprocedures.
YouwillneedaPhilipsscrewdrivertoaccessthetrimandshiftemergencyareasunderthehandle.
EmergencyStart(whentheenginewillnotstartinneutral)
Locatetheyellowwireonthestartersideoftheengine.
1. Disconnectthetwoyellowwirescomingfromthetopofthetransmissiontotwoyellowwirescomingout
ofengine.Connectthetwoyellowenginewirestogether.Startengine.
EmergencyTrim:
Removethecoverfromtheundersideofthehandle.Disconnecttheblueand
greentrimwiresasshown.Placeoneendofthebluetrimwireonthebattery
cableandthegreenonanypartoftheenginewhereitwillground.Thetrim
shouldmoveup,reversethewirestogotheotherdirection.
EmergencyShift:
Ifyoubreakashiftcableorcan’tshift,removetherearinspectionplateunder
themuffler.Locatetheshiftarm.Removetheshiftcablepin.Rotatetheshift
armtowardsthepropellertogoforward.SeetheEmergencystartprocedure
abovetoconnectthestartoverride.Youcannowstarttheengineingear.Be
verycareful.Simplyturntheengineofftostop.

Trailering:Youmustusethetravellockandthehandletiedownbungee.
Transmission/LowerUnitOil:Itistheowner/operator’sresponsibilitytoensurethatthe
lowerunit/transmissionhasadequateoil.Checksiteglassonsideoftransmissionhousing.
Motormustbeinlevelposition.
Properstorageofengineusingfuelstabilizer.Stalefuelwillcausedamagetothecarburetor
andwillresultindifficultstarting,pooridle,accelerationandtopendspeed.Poorfuel
deliverycancauseanengineleanconditionandmayaffecttheperformanceandlifeofthe

engine.AlwaysuseafuelstabilizerlikeStabilwhentheengineisstoredformorethanone
month.Whileyourenginewillrunongasolinewithethanol,itisnotrecommended.
Propellerbalanceandcondition.Ifapropellerisworn,damagedorbent,itwillvibrateand
cancausethefollowingconditions.Loosebolts,handlevibration,leakingseals,bearing
failure,framecrackingandenginedamage.Adamagedpropellerwillcauseengineandframe
damageandisnotcoveredbywarranty.
Freezingrainandsnowcancauseseveredamagetothethrottleandcarburetor.Storethe
motorwithacover.Throttledamageandastickingcablewillresultinabrokenthrottle
cable,frayedcableandstickingcable.
Saltcancauseextensivecorrosiontothedriveandengine.Ensuretheproductiscleanedand
lubricatedeverytimeitisruninsaltwater.Asacrificialanodehasbeeninstalledonthe
lowerendofthemotortransommountandwillminimizecorrosiondamagehoweverall
corrosionmustberemoved.Corrosionwillcausemisfiring,poorelectricalswitchand
breakerandconnectionsandenginefailure.Removeandrepaintandareasthathave
corrosion.Usesiliconesprayprotectantonwireconnections.
Drivesealdamagewillresultinlossoffluidlevelinthetransmission,difficultshifting,
bearingfailureandultimatelyfailureoftheentiredrivesystem.Maintainfluidlevelsand
monitortheconditionofthesealsnearthepropeller.
Bolts,nutsandotherfastenersshouldbecheckedfrequentlytopreventearlydriveand
enginefailure.
Impactscancauseengineanddrivedamage.Thisincludespropandskegdamage,oilcooler
andhosedamage,throttleandkillswitchbreakage.Severeimpactscancausecarburetorand
airfilterseparation.Snagscanbreakfuelpumps,hosesandpullthedipstickofftheengine.
Thesemotorsarebuilttough,butcautionandsafetyshouldbeyourmainconcernwhen
runninginwaterswithunknowndepthandbottomconditions.Severeimpactsthatcause
frameandenginedamagearenotcoveredbywarranty.
SportHEngineServiceandWarranty
OilRecommendations
Werecommendtheuseofsynthetic5W30or10W40oilclassifiedforserviceSF,SG,SH,SJorhigher.Donot
usespecialadditives.
CheckOil
Placetheengineinalevelposition.Cleantheoilfillareaofanydebris.Removethedipstickandwipewitha
cleancloth.Insertthedipstickfully.Removethedipstickandchecktheoillevel.Itshouldbeatthetopofthe
oillevelindicator.Iflow,addoilslowly.Donotoverfill.Replacethedipstick.
OilPressure
Iftheoilistoolow,theengineisequippedwithalowoilpressureshutdownswitch.Theswitchpreventsthe
enginefromstartingiftheoillevelislowandwillstoptheengineiftheoilpressureislow.Ifthisoccurs,
checktheoillevelandfilltothefullmarkonthedipstick.Thelowoilshutdownswitchdoesnotstopthe
enginewhentheoillevelislow–ithoweverwillpreventtheenginefromstartingwhentheoillevelislow.
FuelRecommendations
Fuelmustmeettheserequirements:
Cleanfreshgasoline.
Aminimumof85octaneformodel3500,3700and91octaneformodels4000and4400engines.
Gasolinewithupto10%ethanol(gasohol)canbeused,BUTISNOTRECOMMENDED.

EngineRPM:
Theengineidlespeedshouldbesetat1200RPMorlesstoensuresmoothandjoltfreeshifting.HigherRPMs
cancausedamagetothedriveandyoucanlosecontroloftheengineandcauseseriousinjuryordeathtothe
operatorandpassengers.
FullthrottleengineRPMissetbythepropellersizewhenruninthewater.Usethefactoryrecommend
propellersforyourenginesizeshownbelow.NormaloperatingRPMisfrom3800to4200RPM.Yourengine
isequippedwithahighRPMgovernorthatwillcutouttheengineat4600RPMifthepropellerleavesthe
water.Donotoverrevyourenginehigherthan4200whenthepropellerisoutofthewater.Donotrunthe
marineengineingearoutofthewaterathighspeedsforlongerthanthreeminuteswhichcancauseexcessive
heatanddamagetothepropellersealsandbearings.
HowtoStartandStoptheEngine
Tostart–Donotsqueezethethrottle.Pulloutthechokeknoblocatedonthefrontpanelofthe3500model
andonthecarbofthe4000and4400models–seepage4.Turnthekeytotheonpositionandthenstart.
Pushthechokeknobinaftertheengineiswarm.Alwaysstopandstartthemotorintheneutralgear.Tostop
Movethethrottletotheslowposition.Turntheignitionswitchtotheoffposition.

Nevermakeadjustmentstothecarburetor.Thecarburetorwassetatthefactorytooperateefficientlyunder
mostconditions.However,ifadjustmentisnecessary,seeaMudBuddyauthorizeddealerforservice.
NeutralMicroSwitch
Theneutralswitchprovidesingearprotectionasrequired
bytheU.S.Guard.Themicroswitchislocatedunderthe
engineandisaccessedbyremovingthemufflerandrear
transmissionaccessplate.
Thespringarmonthemicroswitchisadjustablesothatit
allowstheenginetobestartedintheneutralgearonly.If
theswitchisdamagedorisoutofadjustmenttheengine
maynotstartinneutralormaystartingear.
Toadjust,placetheengineingearandbendthearm
slightlysothatthemicroswitchturnsonasthecam
rotateswhileshiftingintoneutral.Thereisanaudible
clickintheswitchwhenitturnsonthestartcircuit.Testtheshiftandstartprocedureseveraltimestoensure
theenginestarts.Seetheemergencystartingprocedureinstructionsheetincludedwithyourquickstart
guidetobypassthestartingearprotectionifthereisamicroswitchfailureinthefield.

HowtoAdjustValveLash
SettingValveLashorValveClearanceisimportant
andshouldbecheckedafterthefirst10hoursof
running.Ifthevalvelashisnotsettospecifications,
thevalveswillnotopenandcloseatthecorrecttime,
whichwillcausepowerlossandpossibleheadand
enginedamage.Youwillnotgetthebest
performancefromyourmotorifthevalvelashisnot
setcorrectly.The36,44,and50modelvalvelash
settingis0.004to0.006.
Setthevalvesonacoldengine,removeyourvalve
covers(10mmwrench),sparkplugs,andengagethe
clutch(ifyouareturningtheproptoturnthecrank).Turnthecrankshaft/propcounterclockwiseuntilyou
seethevalvesopeningandclosing.Aftertheexhaustvalveclosesputyourfingeroverthesparkplughole.
Whenyoufeelaircomingout(compressionstroke)thenturnslowly.Lookinthesparkplugholewitha
flashlightandturntheshaftuntilyouseethepistonrisetoitsmaxpoint.Turnitjustalittlebitmoretillit
drops¼”andthensetthevalveclearance(thisis¼”pastTopDeadCenterTDC).
Useafeelergaugetocheck/settheclearanceat.004to.006.Theyareavailableatanyautopartsstores.
Loosenthe13mmnutontherockeradjusterontherockerarmanduseaTorxT40driverormetricAllen
wrench(dependingonyouradjustertype)toadjusttheclearance.Thefeelergaugeshouldmovebetweenthe
valveandtherockerarmwithresistance(likeslicingastickofcoolbutterwithaknife).Oncetherockerarm
clearanceissetatthecorrectclearance,holdtheadjusterandtightenthe13mmnut.Rechecktheclearanceto
ensureyoudidn'tmoveitwhiletightening(itmaytakeafewtriestogetitright).Nowchecktheothervalve
onthishead.Thenmovetotheotherhadandrockersarmsbyrepeatingtheprocessbyensuringthepistonis
inthecorrectpositionpriortoadjustingthevalves.Torquespecs:ValveCover70in.lbs.(8Nm),Rocker
ArmAdjusterLockNut70in.lbs.(8Nm).Recheckvalveclearanceafter10hoursandthenyearly.
Warning:Makesurethepushrodisseatedintherockerarmcup.Ifnot,thiswillcausesevereengine
damageandisnotcoveredunderwarranty.
Noteyoumayreusethevalvecovergaskets,ifyoureinstallthecoversandseeoilleakingafterrunning,
orderandinstallnewgaskets

Checkthegapwithawiregauge.Ifnecessary,resetthegapto.032to.035.Installandtightenthesparkplug

Draintheoilfromtheengine.
Removetheoilfilter.
Beforeinstallingthenewfilter,prelubricatethefiltergasketring.
Installthefilterbyhand.
Addoiltothefullmarkonthedipstick.
Startandruntheengine.Checktheoilfilterforleaks.Againchecktheoillevel.

HowtoReplacetheFuelFilter
Useplierstosqueezethetabsonthefuelfilterclamps.Slidetheclampsawayfromthefilter.Carefully
removethefuelfilterandproperlydisposeofanyleakingfuel.Checkthefuellineforanycracksorleaks.
Replaceifnecessary.Replacethefuelfilterwithanoriginalequipmentfuelfilter.Securethefuelfilterwith
thehoseclamps.
StorageFuelSystem
Fuelcanbecomestalewhenstoredover30days.Stalefuelcausesacidandgumdepositstoforminthefuel
systemandessentialcarburetorparts.Tokeepthefuelfresh,useafueltreatmentandstabilizer,availableat
mostautomotivestores.Avoidgasolinewithethanol.
Thereisnoneedtodraingasolinefromtheengineifafuelstabilizerisaddedaccordingtoinstructions.Run
theengine2minutesafteraddingthestabilizertothefueltank.
Ifstoredlongerthan30days,thecylindersshouldbeprotectedwithacylinderfoggingavailablefrommarine
storesbyinjectingthefoginthecylindersthroughthesparkplugholes.Cylindersthatbecomecorrodedwill
losecompressionandvoidtheemissionswarranty.
Covertheenginefromrainandsnowtopreventcorrosionandwaterfromenteringtheexhaustoutlet.

Ifgasolineintheenginehasnotbeentreatedwithastabilizer,itmustbedrainedintoanapprovedcontainer.

owner’manual.BOSSDRIVESLLCrecommendsthatyouretainallyourreceiptscoveringmaintenanceon
yourengine,butBOSSDRIVESLLCcannotdenywarrantysolelyforthelackofreceiptsorforyourfailureto
ensuretheperformanceofallscheduledmaintenance.
Astheengineowner,youshouldhoweverbeawarethatBOSSDRIVESLLCmaydenywarrantycoverageof
yourmarineengineorapartthathasfailedduetoabuse,neglect,impropermaintenanceorunapproved
modifications.
YouareresponsibleforpresentingyourenginetoaBOSSDRIVESLLCServiceDealerassoonasaproblem
exists.Thewarrantyrepairsshouldbecompletedinareasonableamountoftime.Ifyouhaveanyquestions

2.LengthofCoverage
Foraperiodofthreeyearsfromdateoforiginalpurchase,Briggs&StrattonandBOSSDRIVES,LLCwarrants
totheinitialownerandeachsubsequentpurchaserthattheengineisfreefromemissiondefectsinmaterials
andworkmanshipthatcouldcausethefailureofthewarrantypart,andthatitisidenticalinallmaterial
respectstotheenginedescribedinthemanufacturer’sapplicationforcertification.Thewarrantyperiod
beginsonthedatetheengineisoriginallypurchased.
Thewarrantyonemissionsrelatedpartsisasfollows:
AnywarrantedpartthatisnotscheduledforreplacementasrequiredmaintenanceintheOwner’sManual
supplied,iswarrantedforthewarrantyperiodstatedabove.Ifanysuchpartfailsduringtheperiodof
warrantycoverage,thepartwillberepairedorreplacedbyBOSSDRIVESLLCatnochargetotheowner.Any
suchpartrepairedorreplacedunderthewarrantywillbewarrantedfortheremainingwarrantyperiod.
AnywarrantedpartthatisscheduledforreplacementasrequiredmaintenanceintheOwner’sManual
supplied,iswarrantedfortheperiodtothefirstscheduledreplacementpointforthatpart.Ifthepartfails
priortothefirstscheduledreplacement,thepartwillberepairedorreplacedbyBOSSDRIVES,LLCatno
chargetotheowner.Anysuchpartrepairedorreplacedunderthewarrantywillbewarrantedforthe
remainderofthewarrantyperiodpriortothefirstscheduledreplacementpointforthatpart.
Addonormodifiedpartsmaynotbeused.Theuseofanynonexemptedaddonormodifiedpartsbythe
ownerwillbegroundsfordisallowingawarrantyclaim.Themanufacturerwillnotbeliabletowarrant
failuresofwarrantedpartscausedbytheuseofanonexemptedaddonormodifiedpart.
3.ConsequentialCoverage
Coverageshallextendtothefailureofanyenginecomponentscausedbythefailureofanywarranted
emissionspart.
4.ClaimsandCoverageExclusions
WarrantyclaimsshallbefiledaccordingtotheprovisionsoftheBOSSDRIVESLLCenginewarrantypolicy.
WarrantycoveragedoesapplytofailuresofemissionpartsthatarenotoriginalequipmentBOSSDRIVESLLC
partsortopartsthatfailduetoabuse,neglect,orimpropermaintenanceassetforthintheBOSSDRIVES,LLC
enginewarrantypolicy.BOSSDRIVESLLCisnotliableforwarrantycoverageoffailurestoemissionsparts
causedbytheuseofaddonormodifiedparts.

5.HighAltitude
Model4000,4400,and5000enginesareequippedwithanonadjustableMikuniHSR42carburetor.This
engineisnotrecommendedforaltitudeuseof4000feet(1219meters)orabove.Operationofengineabove
4000feetwillcausedamagetoengineandvoidenginewarranty.Contactyourdealerifyouhavequestions.

Lookforrelevantemissions,dateofmanufacture,enginefamilyandthedurabilityperiodonyourengine
