2. USING THE qøl™ SIGNAL COMPLETION STAGE IN HOME THEATERS
The qøl™ Signal Completion Stage is a two-channel device designed primarily for stereo or monaural listening to
music in conventional (two-channel) home music systems. Of course, some consumers have integrated their
music systems into multi-channel home theater systems that use processing to synthesize discreet channels.
Thus, we have been asked if the Signal Completion Stage will work in such systems and, if so, how best to
install it. Here are some suggestions:
•Remember that the qøl™ Signal Completion Stage works with line-level, analog signals only. If your
home theater preamp/processor or audio/video receiver has line-level analog outputs and inputs,
there is no risk of harm in attempting to use it with the Signal Completion Stage. If discreet signals
from decoded home theater material do not sound optimal with qøl™, simply bypass qøl™ or, in the
worst case, remove the Signal Completion Stage from your system.
•If the processor has outputs that are “total left” and “total right,” or simply “right” and “left,” the Signal
Completion Stage is most likely to perform very well if those outputs are sent to inputs of your qøl™
component.
•If the processor has only outputs such as “front left” and “front right,” you may experiment with taking
those outputs into your Signal Completion Stage’s inputs and the outputs of the qøl™ component to
your amp(s) or back into unused inputs of your A/V preamp/processor or A/V receiver. Depending
upon the recording of the encoded signals, you may obtain very good results, you may hear no
difference, or you may get results you do not prefer due to the encoding process used for signals for
home theater, but there is little, if any, possibility of doing harm.
•Some users have obtained very satisfactory results using one qøl™ Signal Completion Stage, set in
stereo, for their left and right front speaker and a second qøl™ unit, set in mono, for their front center
speaker. To date, no one has reported using qøl™ units for rear or mid surround channels. As such
channels generally are discreet, monaural, synthesized channels, each would require a separate
qøl™ Signal Completion Stage with each set in mono.
3. USING THE qøl™ SIGNAL COMPLETION STAGE IN WHOLE-HOUSE SYSTEMS
If your whole-house system is fed by a single preamp and the other rooms to which sound is sent receive it in
stereo, then the configuration of the qøl™ component for your main room will work in the other rooms as well.
Just select where your sound is to go as you normally would. If your whole-house system is fed by a different
component than the system in your main room, remember that your qøl™ component has two sets of outputs.
Use one set for your main system and the other for the whole house system. The qøl™ Signal Completion
Stage’s outputs will have no difficulty driving both systems at once if you choose to use both sets.
Rear Panel Input Connections
Four pairs of line-level inputs (each left & right) have been provided. Each has both Balanced (XLR) and
Single-Ended (RCA) jacks. On any given Input (1,2,3 or 4), you may use cables with either XLR or RCA
terminations, but you cannot use both or blend them on the same set of inputs. Different Inputs may be
connected differently, however (i.e., Input 1 could have balanced (XLR) connectors and Input 2 could have
single-ended (RCA) connectors). If you use balanced components and cables, we suggest you continue that way
because the q∅l™Signal Completion Stage is an internally balanced device.
Notes:
1. The q∅l™Signal Completion Stage is an analog device. It has no digital to analog conversion
capability and does not work with digital signals. With digital sources, you must have their outputs sent to the
q∅l™Signal Completion Stage’s inputs after they have been converted to analog.
