Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of a C-Dax XC3 Console. We are confident that your control unit will perform
for many years as long as sensible equipment maintenance/operational practices are followed. We have
endeavoured to make the unit as robust and functional as possible, but please remember that like any piece of
precision electronic equipment, its performance parameters need to be respected.
The XC3 Console
The console should be mounted in a convenient, safe, central position on the front of the ATV/RTV or in the cab
of a tractor. LINE UP THE GPS ANTENNA ON THE CONSOLE WITH THE CENTER OF YOUR ATV/RTV or
TRACTOR CAB.
Power supply is via the power cable to the vehicles 12v battery and by a wireless connection to the implement
that is being controlled. The console should be mounted with the best line of sight between the console and the
implement which the console is connecting to. Care should also be taken when mounting the console to ensure
the greatest protection from the ingress of water. The XC3 console is a sophisticated piece of electronics, C-Dax
recommend keeping the XC3 console dry. If the XC3 is exposed to moisture then remove the battery and store
the console in a warm dry place.

10
Assembly & Setup –XC3 Console
Locate a convenient central surface of sufficient size to fit the console to. Ensure that the location
does not interfere with factory equipment or block the view to gauges or the driver’s field of view.
Always put safety first.
Place the appropriate mount around the bar or mounting point/surface on the tractor/RTV.
Never over-tighten the fasteners on the plastic mounts.
Carefully route the power cable from the console to the battery on the ATV/RTV/Tractor.
Take care to avoid “pinch points” and hot surfaces such as the exhaust system.
Connect the round male power cable to power socket on the bottom of the console.
Before operating, connect power to the implement being operated (Spreader/Sprayer/Pasture
Meter). The XC3 console should connect wirelessly to the spreader/sprayer or Pasture Meter
It is advised that the console power is plugged/unplugged using the round plug in the power line.
Note:
While every effort has been made to protect the console from the
ingress of water, users are advised to remove the console from
the ATV/RTV before washing down the vehicle. No hard water
should be directed near the console at any time.

Step Three

11
Important:
Never bypass the fuse or replace the fuse in the console power
cable with a larger value than the one supplied.
Note:
The battery connector cable is supplied for connection to batteries that do not already have a C-Dax battery
connector cable fitted. If already fitted, connect the console power cable directly to it.
The path to run the cables to the battery and rear carrier is up to the installer but should be chosen to protect the
cables and so as not to obstruct the operator.
The power cable for the implement being operated should be routed so that just the plug and sufficient cable to
allow the vehicle to turn is left at the rear of the vehicle. Coil excess cable under seat or tie under rear carrier out
of the way.

Getting a background map
The XC3 console has the ability to download farm maps from C-Dax SmartMaps or from a portable USB drive.
DOWNLOAD VIA C-DAX SMARTMAPS
If you already have a SmartMaps account and have drawn paddocks on your map then skip to number 3. If not
then there are several steps that you need to go through in order to download a map from SmartMaps.
1. If you have not already done so, create a SmartMaps account by visiting www.c-dax.co.nz and following
the SmartMaps link or type the following into your web browser:
https://www.myravensdown.co.nz/Account/LogOn/?theme=cdax
2. Create a farm map by following the wizard and entering your farm address and other details. SmartMaps
should then zoom to the imagery of your farm. From here you can click on “Create (draw on map)” to
draw paddocks around your farm, or “Create (from other mapping software)” to import an existing map
boundary.
(Please note that in order to use the fully functionality of C-Dax SmartStop, C-Dax recommend that you
do not draw raceways and farm infrastructure as paddocks, rather set these layers up as management
zones)

13
(Please also note that the spatial (X,Y) accuracies will vary however a primary range of +/-3m to +/-5m
applies to most areas. A Ravensdown GIS specialist can perform a spatial shift (X,Y) on the entire map
to align it with XC3 GPS positions. Each pixel depicts 0.4m on the ground.)
3. After you have created a map, or if you have an existing SmartMaps account with preloaded maps, then
all you need now is your Customer Number (or email address) and Password.
4. If you have not established an internet connection via the windows Wi-Fi connection wizard then please
do this first.
5. Once you have established an internet connection and have the XC3 console running, press “Choose
Map” and press “SmartMaps” and fill in your Customer Number (or email address) and Password from
above. If you have an internet connection then the status bar will read “Connection available”, press the
download icon
6. If you wish to get maps from other SmartMaps users they will need to elect to share their maps with you
via the “Share” tab within SmartMaps. Once a user shares their maps with you then you will also
receive their map files when you click to download maps in the XC3 console.

DOWNLOAD VIA XC3 USB DRIVE
To import a boundary file you must firstly make sure that the format of the file is correct. There are two key
criteria for the XC3 boundary file (both are industry standards)
1. The file type is called a shapefile and contains polygon geometry. A shapefile actually consists of a
number of files. For example: the shapefile “MyFarmBoundary” consists of the following
a. MyFarmBoundary.shp
b. MyFarmBoundary.shx
c. MyFarmBoundary.dbf
d. MyFarmBoundary.prj
Each of these extensions is critical and the boundary file simply will not work without them
2. The coordinate system of the shapefile needs to be WGS 84 (World Geodetic System 1984).
If the above criteria are met, insert your USB drive into the USB plug on the top left of the XC3 console and wait
a few seconds for Windows to detect the new device, you will need to remove the screws/cover to insert the
USB drive. Please also remember to replace the USB cover and make sure it is fully sealed again after you
have copied your files.
USB COVER PLATE
On the XC3 unit press “Choose map” and then press import from “File” and use the windows file explorer to
locate and select your shapefile. If the import is successful you will see the background map change and the
farm name will now appear in your map selection box as shown in the screen shot below.

USING AB GUIDANCE
This feature is normally used during spreading or spraying operations with an XC3 compatible sprayer or
spreader connected but may be used for navigation when performing other activities.
1. Press “Set A & B”
2. Drive to your A point (the start of your straight line) and press “Set A”
3. Drive to your B point (the end of your straight line) and press “Set B”. When a C-Dax implement is
connected the track spacing will be automatically set depending on what the implement is, and what
material is being applied. You can manually override the track spacing as shown in the image below, C-
Dax do not recommend overriding the track spacing.
4. All of your A/B lines are saved while the unit retains power, if you wish to cycle through your A/B lines
then press the green left/right arrows. When the unit is switched off, or if you choose to reset all of the
features, then A/B lines are lost.

How the measurement process works
The steps below outline the overall process for measuring operations.
The XC3 console has a built in battery but
should always be connected to the
ATV/RTV power supply when operating.
After the XC3 console has been turned on it
will automatically discover and connect to
the Pasturemeter sled.
You do not have to remain stationary for
GPS, an open view of the sky is essential
for good coverage
Press the Start/Stop button to begin
measuring. The console will begin recording
as soon as the unit is lowered (see
SmartStop note Pg20) and the tow speed
is greater than 5km/hr
Press the Start/Stop button to stop
measuring.
Upload any desired data using the Upload
menu. Press the Finshed button and
Shutdown in order to power off the console

& Pasturemeter sled

19
The measurement process in detail
With the Pasturemeter sled connected to the tow hitch and plugged into the vehicles 12v power
source you are now ready to start the XC3 console.
To turn the console on, hold the inset button on the top right hand side of the console until the
LED lights on the front of the console become illuminated. This should take approximately 5
seconds. The console will boot up and display the console start screen shown below. Please
wait for the startup process to complete before advancing from the welcome screen. From a cold
start the unit will take approximately 2 minutes.
Read the disclaimer carefully and press the green Continue button if you agree to the terms.
The console will now display the last selected farm map and begin searching for a Pasturemeter
sled to connect to. It may take up to 30 seconds to discover and connect to your Pasturemeter.

20
Once a connection has been established and a GPS fix has been acquired, the Measure button
will appear on the middle left hand side of the screen.
When you are ready to begin measuring simply press the green Start/Stop button and the
Pasturemeter sled will lower itself into the measuring position. Once the unit is lowered the user
can begin moving. The console will begin recording when the speed is 5km/hr or greater and
automatically pause when the speed is lower than this. When the paddock measurement is
finished, simply press the Start/Stop button once again to return the unit to the transit position.
If the green Start/Stop button is not visible and there is no satellite symbol displayed in the
bottom left hand corner of the screen then you must wait while the console acquires a valid GPS
signal. A clear view of the sky is important, move away from trees and buildings.
C-Dax SmartStop
When enabled, C-Dax SmartStop will automatically raise/lower the Pasturemeter
sled based on whether the unit is inside or outside a paddock. For example, with
smart stop enabled, the user need only press the Start/Stop button once to begin
the farm ride. As they exit the farm race and enter the first paddock the
Pasturemeter sled will automatically lower into the measuring position and begin
recording data. Likewise, as soon as the unit leaves the paddock and re-enters the
farm race, the unit will automatically pause the recording and rise back up onto its
wheels. At any time the unit can be forced into the upright position by simply
pressing the Start/Stop button in the bottom right hand corner of the XC3
console.
To enable smart stop press the “Settings” button then tick the check box for
smart stop
C-Dax recommends forcing the unit to the upright position when travelling
down raceways. GPS has the tendency to drift, also some maps are not
sufficiently accurate for this technology to work.
