most ountries, ttherefore, tthe wwear-
ing oof sseat bbelts iis rrequired bby llaw.

The physi al prin iple of a frontal rash is
easy to explain.
As soon as the vehi le is moving, so-
alled “kineti energy” is reated by the
movement of the vehi le , in the vehi le
itself as well as in the vehi le o upants.
The extent of the “kineti energy” effe t
depends largely on the speed of the vehi-
le and on the weight of the vehi le and
the vehi le o upants.
The higher the speed and the greater the
weight of the vehi le, the more energy
must be dispersed should an a ident
o ur.

The speed of the vehi le is, however, the
more important fa tor. If, for example, the
speed in reases from 25 km/h to
50 km/h, the kineti energy in reases
fourfold!
As the vehi le o upants in our example
are wearing no seat belts, their entire
kineti energy an only be dispersed
through the rash into the wall, should a
rash o ur. The onsequen es would be
severe or possibly even fatal injuries.
If you are driving at a speed of only
30 km/h to 50 km/h, for es whi h an
easily ex eed 1000 kg are exerted on the
body should an a ident o ur.
The for es exerted on the body will
in rease further at higher speeds, e.g. At
twi e the speed the for es in rease four-
fold!
Vehi le o upants not wearing their seat
belts are thus not “linked” to their vehi-
le.
In a frontal rash, these people will on-
tinue to move forward at the same speed
as the vehi le was travelling before the
vehi le rashed!

In ase of a frontal ollision a ident, the
o upants who are not belted up are
thrown forwards and ollide with parts of
the vehi le interior, e.g. the steering
wheel, instrument panel or winds reen.
Vehi le o upants who are not belted in
may even be thrown out of the vehi le.
This ould even lead to serious injuries.
The wide spread opinion that you an pro-
te t your body with your hands in the
event of a light a ident is not orre t.
Even at low speeds of ollision, for es
whi h annot be defle ted a t on the
body.
It is also important that o upants sitting
in the rear seats are belted in as they an
also be thrown out of the vehi le in the
event of an a ident. Somebody sitting in
the rear and not using a seat belt is
endangering not only himself but also the
o upants of the front seats.

Prote ting sseat bbelts
Seat belts whi h are worn properly on-
tribute to the orre t seating position of
the vehi le’s o upants. The seat belts
help redu e kineti energy onsiderably.
They also prevent un ontrollable move-
ments whi h an also be the ause of
severe injuries.
Vehi le o upants who wear their seat
belts orre tly benefit greatly from the
fa t that kineti energy is absorbed by the
belt. The vehi le front stru ture and other
passive safety measures, su h as the Air
Bag System, also guarantee a redu tion
in kineti energy. The energy reated is
thus kept to a low level and the risk of
injury redu ed.

These physi al prin iples also apply, of
ourse, to other types of a idents and to
vehi les with the Air Bag System.
This is why you
must
put on your seat belt
before every journey, even if you are only
going “just around the orner”. Please
also ensure that your passengers are or-
re tly belted in.
You have seen how seat belts fun tion in
the ase of an a ident on previous
pages.
A ident statisti s have proven that the
risk of injury is redu ed and the han e of
survival in a serious a ident is in reased
if the seat belt is worn properly.
For this reason, the wearing of seat belts
is a legal requirement in most ountries.

pages.

How aare sseat bbelts pput oon
properly?
Putting 33 ppoint bbelt oon
You mmust aadjust tthe ffront sseat tto yyour
height bbefore ffastening tthe sseat bbelt.
See ""Front sseats" hapter.
For the entre rear seat, it must be taken
into a ount that the ba k of the seat
must be perfe tly lo ked in position for
orre t fun tioning of the seatbelt. See
page 2.68.
The inertia reel belt gives omplete free-
dom of movement when pulled slowly.
Sudden braking, however, will ause the
belt to lo k.
The me hanism will also lo k the belt
when a elerating, driving down steep
gradients or ornering.

Pull belt by the tongue slowly and
smoothly a ross the hest and hips.

the seat until it engages audibly

With the aid of the
belt hheight aadjust-
ment
the routing of the shoulder belt for
the front and rear seats an be set to fit
the body properly.
•
To adjust, push the upper relay fitting
in the dire tion shown, hold in this posi-
tion and move up or down so that the
shoulder part of belt runs roughly a ross
the entre of the shoulder as shown in the
left-hand illustration –
on nno aaount
against tthe nne k.
•
After adjusting, pull the belt with a jerk
to ensure that the relay fitting is properly
engaged.
Note
The seat height adjustment* an also be
used to adjust belt routing on front seats.

Taking tthree ppoint bbelt ooff
To release the belt, press the red button in
the lo k. The tongue will then spring out.
Pass the tongue towards the door by hand
so that the retra tor an roll the belt up
properly. A plasti knob in the belt holds
the tongue in a onvenient position.
Lap bbelt*
The entre pla e on the rear seat is fitted
with a lap belt.
The belt lo k is used in the same way as
on the three point inertia reel belts.
For safety reasons a lap belt not being
used should always be onne ted to the
bu kle.

To llengthen
belt hold the tongue at right
angles to belt and pull belt through to the
required length – see illustrations.
The belt is easier to adjust if tongue and
ap are pressed together.
To sshorten
belt it is only ne essary to
pull the free end of belt.
The surplus belt length is taken up by
moving the plasti slide.

Belt ttensioner*
Safety for the
belted-in
driver and front
passenger is in reased by the belt ten-
sioners fitted to the inertia reels of the
front 3 point seatbelts to supplement the
Air Bag.
In ase of a severe frontal ollision the
system is a tivated by sensors whi h fire
a pyrote hni harge in the two automati
tightening devi es.
This makes the devi es roll up and tighten
the tensioners.

Notes
•
Smoke is released when the tensioners
are a tivated. This smoke does not indi-
ate a fire in the vehi le.
•
It is of utmost importan e to observe
the relevant safety regulations when the
vehi le or omponents of the system are
s rapped. Te hni al Servi e Centres are
