Introducing+the+Calix+E7420+
The Calix E7-20 Ethernet service access platform is a Large Form Factor (LFF) chassis that
delivers high-performance Ethernet-based transport, aggregation, and FTTP services from a
controlled environment deployment.
The wide array of high-performance applications delivered by the E7-20 includes 10GE
Ethernet transport, high-density residential triple play services over GPON, AE, and point-
to-point Ethernet, Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) compliant business services, mobile
backhaul, and protected GE aggregation.
The Calix E7-20 system consists of the following components:
!!20-slot Chassis
!!Removable Fan Tray Assembly (FTA)
!!Fan Filter
!!SCP (Switch Control Processors)
!!GE-24x Line Cards
!!GPON-4x Line Cards
!!GPON-8x Line Cards
!!Removable Fiber-Management System
The vertical size of the LFF chassis permits placement of 3 LFF chassis in a 7-foot rack, with
at least 4RU height left over for power panels or other equipment.

'()*+!570-/!
The Calix E7-20 line cards, SCP cards, and fan tray install into the front of the E7-20 shelf.
When equipped with line cards, the E7-20 front panel also terminates all system line
interfaces (fibers). The E7-20 fan tray is equipped with Craft Ethernet and serial ports for
management and features several system status indicators. The front of the chassis also
includes a removable fiber management system.
'()*+!?4#7!
The E7-20 power inputs (A/B), ground, Craft management, and BITS timing interfaces are
located on the rear of the E7-20 shelf.
?#IY!N02-/%-L!0F/%0-.!
The E7-20 provides two mounting options:
!!Standard US Telco with 5-inch maximum protrusion from the front of the rack
mounting rails to farthest forward point of the equipment, all cables included.
!!Mid-mount with 10-inch maximum protrusion from the front of the rack mounting rails
to farthest forward point of the equipment, all cables included.

Calix+E7420+Cards+
The Calix E7-20 is equipped with 20 universal line card slots, supporting a flexible array of
high capacity line cards. Service access cards can be mixed in any of the 20 universal line
cards slots within the E7-20 chassis without restriction. All E7-20 cards use pluggable
transceiver modules for optical and copper-based interfaces, including industry standard SFP,
SFP+, CSFP, and OIM modules. Each port on each card has an LED to indicate an
established link and data traffic activity.
The centralized E7-20 Switch Controller Processor matrix (SCP) and each of the line cards
integrate non-blocking, full-duplex Ethernet switches to meet the evolving bandwidth and
service requirements of residential, business, and transport / aggregation applications.

!!Four (GE SFP) interfaces
!!One (10GE SFP+) interface
!!One (10GE XFP) interface
The Calix SCP-10GE card can be installed into two of the common control slots. The E7-20
SCP-10GE switch control processor card provides centralized management control,
switching, and network connectivity for the E7-20. Two 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports on each
card provide the primary high speed network connectivity for the system, while four GE
ports on each card provide alternative support for NxGE LAG uplink interfaces or Ethernet
aggregation. Note: the 10GE SFP+ port on the SCP card does not support GE SFP
modules.

!!Four ITU G.984-compliant Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) interfaces
The Calix E7-20 GPON-4x service access card provides multiservice capability over four
GPON OLT ports, used to subtend up to 64 ONTs per OLT port, with a card capacity of
256 GPON ONTs, and a full E7-20 chassis capable of supporting up to 5,120 ONTs. The
GPON-4x card supports single-fiber Class B+ (28 dB link margin) optical distribution
network:
!!Standard Reach OIM
!!Up to 64 passive optical splits per PON
!!Up to 20 km reach with 32 way split

!!Eight ITU G.984-compliant Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) interfaces
The Calix E7-20 GPON-8x service access card provides multiservice capability over eight
GPON OLT ports, used to subtend up to 64 ONTs per OLT port, with a card capacity of
512 GPON ONTs, and a full E7-20 chassis capable of supporting up to 10,240 ONTs. The

!!Twelve (GE CSFP) interfaces that accommodate 24 GE ports
The Calix E7-20 GE-24x service access card provides up to 24 GE ports using pluggable
SFPs (12 GE ports, single GE port per optical module) or CSFPs (Mode 1 and Mode 2, 24
GE ports, two GE ports per optical module). Each CSFP module supports two independent
bidirectional transceivers (1490nm Tx / 1310nm Rx), each capable of operating at a rate of
1Gbps bi-directional. High-density, dual-port CSFP modules have a maximum range of
20km, while single port SFPs can be used to reach AE ONTs up to 60 km.
Note: The CSFP modules are mechanically compatible with SFP sockets but CSFP modules
cannot be used in equipment that only supports SFP sockets. Further, CSFP Mode 2
modules cannot be used in equipment that supports CSFP Mode 1 (pre-standard) modules.

The E7-20 “Blank” cards are designed to fill all empty access card and SCP card slots. A
common E7 BLANK card is used in both the E7-2 and E7-20 and must be placed in any
empty slot to ensure proper airflow and cooling for normal operations. The blank card keeps
“forced air” from escaping out the front of the shelf and is required to comply with
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) standards.
Note: Blank cards must be ordered separately.

The E7-20 platform supports industry standard pluggable modules for all service and
network interfaces, including ITU G.984 compliant GPON, SFP GE, XFP 10GE ports, and
SFP+ 10GE ports.
Note: The 10GE SFP+ port on the E7-20 SCP card does not support GE SFP modules.
See the following Calix Quick Tip bulletins on the Calix website for information on the
support for SFP modules and direct-attach cables:
!!Calix E7 Support for SFP Modules
!!Pairing Bidirectional SFPs to Support Single-Fiber Ethernet Links
Module restrictions
The following module restrictions apply:
!!Unless otherwise specified, SFP sockets in all Calix products accept any SFP module.
!!GE-24x cards only support the Calix modules specified in their respective data sheets.
!!Copper SFP modules should be purchased from Calix to ensure correct operational
behavior.
!!The 10GE modules, GPON OIM, and CSFP modules must always be purchased from
Calix.
