Introduction
Welcome to the Dallas DS2490 USB Adapter installation guide. The DS2490 USB Adapter allows you
connect the iButton®Enrollment Reader to your computer through your computer's USB port.
NOTE: SmartLock®Connect and SmartLock®Ultralite’s stand-alone controllers/readers can only be
programmed using the iButton programming key and enrollment reader that is part of the Stand-Alone
Programming Kit (below). This also applies to Cansec TruckStop Express controller.
iButton Programming Key Dallas DS2490 USB Adapter
(Snaps into enrollment reader receptacle) (Connects to PC’s USB port)
iButton Enrollment Reader
(Transports data to/from the
programming modules,
positioned at controllers)
All Cansec products that support the Dallas DS2490 USB Adapter load the required drivers for operation. This
document provides detailed instruction for completing the installation phase of this USB device.
The iButton Enrollment Reader has a
phone-style jack that plugs in to both the
iButton USB adapter and the stand-alone
programming module near the controller.
With the programming key snapped
into the enrollment reader receptacle,
data can be transported to and from
controllers and the PC.

Software Installation
NOTE: Never attempt to plug the USB adapter into an available USB port until the associated
access-control software has been installed.
Driver Installation
Once software installation is completed, plug the Dallas DS2490 USB Adapter into a free USB socket. Do
not attempt to use a USB hub interface. Driver installation occurs when the device is first detected by the
system and not all USB hubs work reliably with the DS2490. For this reason, it is important to connect
directly to a motherboard USB socket to ensure that the driver installation completes properly. If you
mistakenly plugged the adapter in prior to software installation, see the section Uninstalling the DS2490
before proceeding.
The driver installation process is determined by the version of Windows®. Sample installation scenarios
are presented below for Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 7. For Windows Vista
and Windows 2008 the steps are similar to that of Windows 7.
WINDOWS 98 / WINDOWS ME
When the DS2490 is inserted for the very first time, the Found New Hardware popup window will appear.
After a brief interval correct identification of the USB device should take place.
Once identified, the driver will load automatically and the adapter should be ready for use.

Windows Update does not support 1-wire devices at this time and also requires an active Internet
connection to function. For this reason:

Or click Browse and locate the driver C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\DS2490.sys manually

The driver should be successfully located and installed.
Press Finish to complete the process.
WINDOWS®VISTA, 7 AND 2008
During the access control software installation, there will be a prompt to install the driver for the USB
adapter. Follow the prompt to complete the driver installation. Once the driver and the access controls
software are installed, plug the USB adapter into a USB port on the computer and it will automatically
find and load the driver for the adapter. Note: A USB hub is NOT recommended.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION FOR USB INSTALLATION
The following additional points are noted in the Dallas Semiconductor device driver documentation and
maybe applicable in some cases.
Unplug any 1-wire USB devices during installation to allow the device driver to be updated.
If a 1-wire USB device has previously been used on the PC, the computer must be restarted after
installation to recognize the new device driver.
If the PC has never had a 1-wire USB device on it, plug it in right after installation to complete the USB
install. If it is not recognized, then restart the computer and try again.
If auto-detect cannot locate the USB device driver (DS2490.SYS), browse to it in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers or C:\WINNT\system32\drivers.
