Introduction
CDS-600Dand CDS-1100D are modifiedCanon
EOS 600D and 1100D. You can control the
cameraandtakeimagesby usingaPCconnected
tothecamerawithaUSBcable.Theimagesensor
can be cooledmaximum -28Cbelow ambient by
theinstalledTECcooling moduleto minimizenoise
of pictures and movies. You will be able to take
astronomicalimagesofbreathtakingquality.
Camerausages
YoucancontrolthecameraonlybyusingaPCconnectedtothecamerawithaUSB cable.Youcantake
pictures, change settingsand save images to the PCbythismethod. Youcannot controlthe camera
without aPCconnected tothecamera. Youwillget used tothiscameraand understand thecamera
betterwhile readingthismanualandtakingtestimages.Pleaseread‘Handlingcaution’and‘Safetyofthe

Cameraoperationandresponsibility
WeprovideaSDmemorycardtosaveimageswiththecamera.CentralDSwillnotberesponsibleforany
inconvenience orloss due tofailure of storing imagesto the SD card ordefective images stored inthe
card.
Youcanusethiscameraforpersonaluseanywhereintheworld.
Handlingprecaution
•This camera is a high precision device. Please do not drop and avoid any physicalimpact against
camera.
•Thiscameraisnotwaterproof.Ifyoudropthecamerainwater,wipeoffanywaterdropletsfromthe
camerawithadryclothandcontactCentralDS.
•Donotleavethecameraunderthedirectsunlight.Hightemperaturecandamagethecamera.
•This cameraistightlysealed withmolecularsieve,high performance desiccant toprevent dew from
forminginside thecamerawhilethe coolingsystem isoperating. Ifthecameraisdisassembledbythe
user, moisture can get into the camera. This can result in condensation inside the camera and
damagesofthecircuit.Donotdisassemblethecamera.
•Pleaseuseadustblowertoremovedustsonthefilter.
•Donotdisassemblethefilter.Iftheairtightsealingisdamaged,dewcanforminsidethecamera.
•Ifthecameraisdisassembledbypersonnelnot authorized
byCentralDS,thewarrantywillbevoided.
•Donotleavethecameraattachedtoatelescope withthe
cooling system off for long time. Dew can form on the
surfaceofthecameraandthiscandamagethecamera.
•If condensation forms on the camera, do not use the
camera.
•If thecameraissuddenlybrought infromthe coldintoa
warm room, condensation may form on the camera and
internal parts. To prevent condensation, first put the
camera in a sealed plastic bag and let it adjust to the
warmertemperaturebeforetakingitoutofthebag.
•Store the camera in a sealed container with desiccants
(i.e.Silicagel)orcool,dry,wellventilatedlocation.
•Image sensor dust – CentralDS tests each camera with
testexposurestochecktheimagesensorisdustfreebeforeshipping.Howeverabout2–4%ofthe
customerreporteddustsonthe image sensor. Ifyousee marksonyourimage duetothedustson
the image sensor,please contact CentralDS forservicing. Do not disassemble the camera to clean
thedusts.
•Cautionwiththecoolingsystemactivated–theTECcoolingsystemfortheimagesensorisdesigned
to emit substantial amounts of heat to outside. This does not cause any problemon the camera
operationbutaminorburncanbe causedifskiniscontactedwiththecoolingsystemforextended
periodtime.

1. KeeptheBackyardEOSvouchernumberincludedwiththecamerahandy.
2. Gotowww.backyardeos.com
3. MENU>30-daytrial>filloutname,emailaddressandcameramodel(CDS-1100D,CDS-600D)
4. FilloutthecommentsectionwiththeprovidedBackyardEOSvouchernumber.
5. YoushouldreceiveanemailwithanactivationkeyfromBackyardEOS.com.
6. DownloadthelatestBackyardEOSfromMENU>DOWNLOAD
7. Installthesoftwareandentertheactivationkeytofinishtheinstallation.
InstallingCanon EOS Software
•Youcan control basic camera settings and take pictures and movies with a PC connected to the
camerausingEOSutility.
•TheCD-ROMprovidedwiththecameraincludesEOSutility,DigitalPhotoProfessional,ZoomBrowser
EXandPictureStyleEditor.
•DonotconnectthecameratothePCbeforeinstallingthesoftware.
•Please install the new software by following instruction even though the previous version of the
softwareisalreadyinstalledonthePC.Thenewversionwilloverwritethepreviousversion.

Taking Pictures
•Please make sure EOS Utility and
BackyardEOS are already installed on
thePC which will be connected tothe
camera first. You can operate the
camera with the following instruction.
Please follow the order of the
instruction.
1. Turn off the camera on/off switch and the cooler
on/offswitchonthebacksideofthecamera.
2. Connect the 2” nosepiece (or the camera lens
adapter)tothecamerabody.
3. Connect the camera to a telescope (or a camera
lens)securely.
4. ConnecttheUSBcabletothecameraUSBport.
5. ConnecttheDCcabletothecamera’spowerport.
6. Please make sure youroute the USB cableandthe
DCpowercable through the cable holdertoensure
reliablecommunicationbetweenthecameraandthePCandprevent
anydamagesontheUSBportbyanylooseconnection.
7. Connectthepowercabletothepoweradapter.
8. TurnonthePCwithEOSUtilityandBackyardEOSinstalledtocontrol
thecameraremotely.
9. OncethePCis started,pluginthe USB cablefrom the camerainto
thePCandturnonthecamera.
10. Checkthe LEDlightonthe cameraison.IfthegreenLEDison,the
cameraisbeingpoweredproperly.
11. RunEOSUtilityfromthePC.
12. Take some test pictures after clicking Camera Settings / Remote
Shooting.
*Please refer to the EOS Utility instruction manual in the [EOS
DIGITALSoftware INSTRUCTIONMANUAL] fordetailed usage of
thesoftware.
13. If test photoswere not takenproperly, please turn off the camera
and check the USB cable connection. Then turn on the camera
againandtakeanothertestpicture.
14. If you successfully took a picture, turn on the cooler (move the
switch to the left) to start TEC cooling. If the red LED is on, the
coolingmoduleisbeingpoweredproperly.
15. Checkifthecoolingfanfortheheatsinkisoperatingproperly

16. Thecamerareachesthemaximumcoolingtemperatureabout7minutesand30secondsafterthe
coolingmodule is turned on. Atthatmoment the image sensortemperature willbe around -26~
-30C below ambient temperature (spring and fall). It is not possible to check image sensor
temperaturewiththenakedeye.
*The TECcoolingmoduleismore efficient whenthe temperature ishigh buttheefficiencyislower
whenthetemperatureislowinthewinter. Thisisduetotheelectricityconsumptionpertemperature
characteristicsof the Peltierelements which isone of the most important parts inthe TECcooling
module. As a result, the cooled image sensor temperature may not reach -26C ~ -30C below
ambientinthewinter.
* The image sensor temperature in BackyardEOS is not the actual sensor temperature but the
temperature at the temperature sensorinstalled onthe PCB circuit board placed 2mm behind the
sensor. Only the image sensoris directly cooled with a cold finger in the CDS-1100D and the
CDS-600D.Wefoundoutfromexperimentsthattheactualimagesensortemperatureisaround8C
below the temperature that BackyardEOS is displaying (fromCanon exif data). It means that the
actualcooledimagesensortemperatureisaround-34C~-38C(springandfall).
*Wedonotprovideanysoftwareorhardwareforuserstocontrolcoolingtemperature.
17. RuntheBackyardEOSprogram.
18. Close EOS Utility and click the connect button on the top left corner of BackyardEOS. This will
connectBackyardEOSandthecamera.
19. Afterthe camerais connected to BackyardEOS, click Frame & Focusbuttonat the center of the
buttontoolbaronthetopleftpartoftheprogram.
20. Youcancheckthe image sensortemperature at the camerainformationsectiononthe topcenter
areaoftheprogram.

21. CloseBackyardEOS,turnoffthecoolerandturnoffthecameraafterfinishinganimagingsession.
22. DisconnecttheUSBcableandthepowercablefromthecamera.
23. Removethecamerafromthetelescope(orthecameralens).
24. Putthenosepiececap(orlenscap)onandputthecamerainacasewithdesiccants(i.e.Silicagel).
*Ifthecameraisexposedtotheairoutsidewiththecoolingmodule offforextendedperiodoftime,
the camera can be internally damaged due to problems such as short circuits caused by
condensation.
*If youhave toleave the cameraoutsideforextendedperiod of time,coverthecamerawiththe
dewshieldcoverassoonasturningoffthecooler.

Characteristics of the modified camera
•CDS-1100D and CDS-600D are modified versions of Canon’s general purpose
DSLRcameras. SomeoforiginalfeaturesoftheCanoncameraareremoved and
newfeaturessuchasTECcoolingandgeneralpurposefiltermountingareaddedfor
high quality astrophotography. Followings are the differences made by the
modification.
1. The low pass filter attached to the image sensor is removed and a MC coated Hoya clearfilter
transmittingvisiblelightandinfraredlightismounted.
*thisfiltercanbereplacedwithBaader2”UV/IRblockingastrophotographyfilterwhenyouorder.
2. Because thelowpassfilterisremoved,imageblurringcanoccurdue tochromaticaberrationonthe
infraredlightsrecordedonthesensorsotheimagesharpnesscansuffer.Thisismorepronouncedin
theimagestakenwithrefractionopticsthanreflectionoptics.
3. We recommend youuse UV/IR cut filter, light pollutionfilterand deep skyfilter at the same time
whileimaging.
4. Youare able todoinfrared photographyby mountingavisible light blocking/ infrared transmitting
filtersuchasaHoyaR72filter.
5. Various 2” imaging filters can
bemountedinthe48mm filter
holderinfrontoftheclearfilter
(orBaaderUV/IRfilter)when
a camera lens is used. The
lens should be mounted after
the2”filterismounted.
6. When a telescope is used for
imaging, 2” filters can be
mounted in the 48mm filter
holder in front of the 2”
nosepiece.
7. Thelensmountdoesnot have
the communication point so
the auto focus, lens
information recording and
pulse signal transfer for
ultrasonic motor operation
which are based onthe communicationbetween the camerabodyand the lens are disabled even
whenaCanonlensisused.
8. Youalways have tofocuslenses manually. Some lenses(200mmF1.8L)needpower fromthe
bodyformanualfocusingandyoucannotfocustheselensesevenmanuallywhentheyaremounted
onCDS-600DandCDS-1100D.
9. YoucannotupdateCDS-1100DandCDS-600DwiththefirmwareprovidedbyCanon.
10. No othercamera settings can be changed other than the settings that can be changed fromthe
preferencesmenuinEOSUtility.

SafetyoftheUserandtheCamera
Follow these safeguards and use the equipment properly to prevent injury and
equipmentdamage.
1. Donotleavethepoweradapterandthepowercordnearanobjectemittingheat.Thiscancausefire
duetodeformationanddamageoftheinsulator.
2. Donotusethecameranearinflammablegas.
3. Iftheinternalpartsofthe cameraareexposedafterthecameraisdroppedorthecamerahousingis
damaged,donotconnectthepowertothecameraduetodangerofanelectricshock.
4. Donotdisassemblethecamera.Itcancauseanelectricshock.
5. Keepthecamerafromthereachofsmallchildren.
6. Donotusetheequipmentindustyorhumidplaces.Thisistopreventfireandelectricalshock.
7. Do not use the camera with medical equipments. The electromagnetic interference can cause
malfunctionofthemedicalequipments.
8. Topreventfireandelectricalshock,followthesafeguardsbelow:
•Alwaysinsertthepowerplugallthewayin.
•Donothandleapowerplugwithwethands.
•Donotexcessivelybendthecord.
•Donotputaheavyobjectonthepoweradapterandcord.
•Donotconnecttoomanypowerplugstothesamepoweroutlet.
•Donotuseacordwhoseinsulationhasbeendamaged.
•Ifthesurroundingnearthepoweroutletisdustyorhumid,thepoweroutletcanbeshort
circuited.Cleananddrythesurroundingbeforeusingtheequipment.
•Donotusethecamerainsideacarunderthehotsun,underthedirectsunlightornearaheat
source.Thecameracanbedamagedorcausesskinburns.
•Donotusepaintthinner,benzene,acetoneorotherorganicsolventstocleantheequipment.

CentralDS Provides 1 year product warranty for customers who purchases CDS-1100Dand
CDS-600D. If a customer provides his or her own camera to be modified by CentralDS,
CentralDSoffers60daysproductwarranty.
