3.0 ImportantPrecautions
Observethefollowingsafetyprecautionstoensureusersafetyandmaximizingtheoperatinglife
ofthepreamplifier.
• Removethebatteriesfromthepreamplifierwhenitisnotusedforanextendedperiod.
• Useonlythebatterychargeradaptersuppliedwithpreamplifier.
• Replacefusewithsametypeandcurrentlimit
• ReplaceonlywithbatteriessuppliedbyCom‐Power.
• Exercisecautionwhenhandlingthepreamplifierbecauseitissensitiveelectrostatic
discharge.
• Avoidusingthepreamplifierinenvironmentswithexcessiveheatormoisture.
Theonlyuserreplaceablepartinthepreamplifieristhebatterypack.Itcanbeaccessedfrom
thebottomoftheunit.Therearenootheruserserviceablepartsinsidetheunit.Donotremove
themaininstrumentcover.IfthepreamplifierneedsrepairpleasecontactauthorizedCom‐
Powerservicecenter.
3.1ExcessiveRFinput
DonotexceedRFinputlevelindicatedonfrontpanel.ExcessiveRFinputmaydamagethe
preamplifier’ssensitiveinputandwillnotbecoveredunderwarranty.
3.2 Saturation
Inadditionpossibledamagetothepreamplifierinput,excessiveRFsignalsmaycausethe
preamplifiertosaturate.Whenapreamplifierreachessaturationpointthegainwillreduce
andcauseanonlinearincreaseinoutputpowerresultinginaccuratemeasurements.PAM‐
840Acanhandleupto+10dBm(117dBµV)inputsignal.
3.3Calibration
ThefactoryrecommendedcalibrationperiodforthePreamplifieris12months.However,its
performanceshouldbecheckedperiodicallytoensurethepreamplifierisoperatingwithinthe
ratedspecificationgiveninsection2.0ofthismanual.

4.0 Warranty
Com‐PowerwarrantstoitsCustomersthattheproductsitmanufactureswillbefreefrom
defectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipforaperiodof3years.Thiswarrantyshallnotapplyto:
• Transportdamagesduringshipmentfromyourplant.
• Damagesduetopoorpackaging.
• Productsoperatedoutsidetheirspecifications.
• ProductsImproperlymaintainedormodified.
• Consumableitemssuchasfuses,powercords,cables,etc.
• Normalwear
• Calibration
• ProductsshippedoutsidetheUnitedStateswithoutthepriorknowlegeofCom‐
Power.
Inaddition,Com‐Powershallnotbeobligedtoprovideserviceunderthiswarrantytorepair
damageresultingfromattemptstoinstall,repair,serviceormodifytheinstrumentby
personnelotherthanCom‐Powerservicerepresentatives.
UndernocircumstancesdoesCom‐Powerrecognizeorassumeliabilityforanyloss,damage
orexpensearising,eitherdirectlyorindirectly,fromtheuseorhandlingofthisproduct,or
anyinabilitytousethisproductseperatelyorincombinationwithanyotherequipment.
Whenrequestingwarranty,calibrationorrepairservices,itisrecommendedthattheoriginal
packagingmaterialbeusedforshipping.Damageduetoimproperpackagingwillvoid
warranty.
Inthecaseofrepairorcomplaint,alabelshouldbeattachedtothehousingofthe
instrumentwhichdescribesbrieflythefaultsobserved.Pleaseincludethename,telephone

4.1Maintenance
Thisproductcontainsnouserreplaceablepartsotherthanthebattery.Iftheunitdoesnot
operateorneedscalibration,pleasecontactCom‐PowerCorporation.Donotremovethe
instrumentcover.Thebatteriescanbeaccessedfromthethebottomoftheunitifneeds
replacement.Anymodificationsorrepairsperformedontheunitbyanyoneotherthanan
authorizedfactorytrainedtechnicianwillvoidwarranty.
Theexteriorsurfacemaybecleanedwithmilddetergentandthenbewipedwithadry,clean,
lint‐freecloth.Usecaretoavoidanyliquidsorforeignobjectsenteringthechassis.

testingfrom18to40GHz.
ThePAM‐840Ahighgainofthepreamplifier
• Amplifiessignalswithinitsoperationalfrequencybandtoimprovetheoverall
signalnoiseratioofthemeasurementsystem.
• Compensatesforsignallossesassociatedwiththeuseofcablesandantennas
operatingwithinitsfrequencyrange.

5.3.1FrontPanel
ThesimplepanelshowninthephotobelowconsistsofNtypeconnectorforRFinputand
output,powerswitchwithLEDindicator,chargingindicatorandbatterylowindicator.Please
observethemaximuminputratingprintedonfrontpanel.Whenthebatterylowindicatorturns
on,thepreamplifierneedscharging.However,youcancontinueusingitpoweredbybattery
chargeradapter.Thebatterylowindicatorwillturnoffwhentheadapterispluggedandthe
chargingindicatorwillturnon.Forfastercharging,turnoffpreamplifier.
5.3.2BackPanel
Thebackpanelshownbelowconsistsoffuseholderandchargingadapterinputsocket.Make
suretouseonlythechargeradaptersuppliedbyCom‐Power.Damagecausedtothe
preamplifierbyusinganalternateadapterwillvoidwarranty.
5.3.3BatteryReplacement
Thereplaceablebatterypackcanbeaccessedfromthebottomofthepreamplifier.Fourscrews
securethecovertothebatterycompartment.Ifthebatteriesarenolongerholdingthecharge,
replacementbatterypackcanbepurchasedfromCom‐Power.

Troubleshootingtips
Ifthebatteryisnotholdingchargeorthechargingindicatordoesnotturnon,openthebattery
compartmentandmakesurethebatteryisproperlyconnected.Ifthebatteriesaresecurely
connected,checkthefuseonthebackpanel.Ifthefuseisblown,replaceit.Pleaseheedthe
warninglabelonthebottomofthefuseholderandrearpanel.
Ifthebatterychargingindicatorstilldoesnotturnon,checkthechargingadaptertomakesure
itissupplyingtheratedvoltageontheadapter.Ifthechargingadapterisproducingtheproper
voltage,thebatteriesmayhavetobereplaced.
