Th Cont mpo Fir plac ’s PFM S ri s ar all masonry fir plac s f aturing a pr cast h rring-
bon brick patt rn adjoin d to a lightw ight concr t backing. Th fir box structur consists of
10 or 11 lightw ight modular pi c s. Th brick patt rn is availabl in 3 diff r nt colors to fit any
styl décor.
This fir plac us s a doubl wall air-cool d m tal chimn y sys-
t m or a doubl wall insulat d class “A” chimn y syst m. S
pag 6 for sp cifications.

Du to its lightw ight fir box and th m tal chimn y syst m,
th CONTEMPO FIREPLACE w ighs only 990 to 2000 pounds,
and th r for , r quir s no footings and can v n b install d on
most wood n floors. Ch ck with th ar a’s construction indus-
try, archit ct, or ngin r.

CHIMNEY CHASE REQUIREMENTS
Framing should b construct d of 2 x 4 lumb r or h avi r. Wh n v r car-
p t or padding is pr s nt, th y should b r mov d including th total
ar a of th h arth xt nsion (s pag 16). Fir box will b install d 1/2”
in front of th framing so that install d 1/2” sh trock will b flush with
op ning.
Fir -blocking is r quir d b tw n th joists in which th flu will b in-
stall d. An nclos d chas should b construct d with a minimum op n
cl ar spac sp cifi d by I.D. Chase Size in TABLE 1, Pag 7.
Wh n an xt rior roof chas is construct d (s FIG. 1), a ½” plywood or
waf r board should cap th chas in which a minimum diam t r circl , of
2” larg r than th pip diam t r, should b r mov d, and ov r which th
roof flashing should b c nt r d and mount d.

1. Start by cutting a 24 gaug of sh t m tal to th siz of fir box bas . N xt layout 1 lay r of fir brick as
shown in FIG 5. Mark around ach brick with a p ncil or chalk, and th n r mov th bricks. Spr ad a thin
lay r of mortar or mastic in th brick lin s, and r plac bricks. Now plac sh t m tal and s cond lay r of
fir brick as shown in FIG 4.

CONCRETE FLOOR PEDESTAL INSTALLATION

FIREBOX ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
FLUSH FLOOR INSTALLATION

Th Cont mpo PFM S ri s Fir plac consists of 9, 10, or 11 modular lightw ight pi c s (d p nding on th
mod l). A Cont mpo Installation Carriag is availabl from your d al r if ass mbling th fir plac in th final po-
sition is not possibl . Wh n th Carriag is us d, th fir plac will b ass mbl d on th carriag following th
sam proc dur s outlin d b low, and th n mov d into th final position using a pall t jack.
Th installation proc dur that follows, outlin s a typical installation with a finish d h arth l vation of 13” (8”
p d stal + 5” fir box bas ).
1. Base Installation

1A. Start by spr ading a thin lay r of suppli d fir plac mortar on th p d stal or concr t floor. For mod ls PFM36,
PFM42, and PFM48—s t th bas on th p d stal and firmly pr ss down spr ading th mortar (as shown in 1A).
1B, 1C. For mod l PFM60 th bas will consist of 2 k y d s ctions (1B) and suppli d pr -cut fir brick (1C). Spr ad a
thin lay r of suppli d fir plac mortar on th block p d stal, and th n s t th right bas (protruding k y s ction
on bottom) s ction in plac . Plac fir plac mortar on th k y joint and s t th l ft bas s ction. N xt, install th
split fir bricks. Th y hav b n pr -cut to fit into th bas . B ginning with th front row, spr ad fir plac mortar
on th insid bas with a 1/4” x 1/4” groov d til applicator. Plac th first brick ov r th c nt r joint and lay th
bricks in a running patt rn.

3. Apply fir plac mortar to th sid s of th first back s ctions. Th brick h rringbon patt rn cr at s a right trian-
gl facing up. If it is not plac d prop rly, th patt rn will not lin up with th sid s ctions patt rn. S cur th
sid s ction to low r back s ction (LB) with two ¼”x 5” lag bolts. Scr w bolts though sid s ction into back s c-
tion. Do not ov r-tight n. Do not put bolts clos r than 2” from any outsid dg .
4. S t th s cond sid s ction into plac and align with th bas and back s ction. S cur this s ction to th back
s ction with 2 – ¼ ”x 5” lag bolts as p r instructions in #3. Locat as indicat d in th illustration by black dots.
7. Spr ad fir plac mortar on top of th s cond back s ction, th n lift and s t into plac th third top s ction. B -
caus this s ction is tilt d in, scr w a pi c of plywood onto th s cond s ction and also into th top back s ction
to hold in plac until th top sid s ction can b s t into plac .
6. Apply fir plac mortar only to th top of both sid s ctions on th drop down portion. S t th first top s ction
into plac and align with th front of th fir plac . On th flang s of this s ction, in th cavity that r c iv s th
top-sid s ction, scr w an anchor bolt straight down into th sid s ctions.

10. PFM60 Only - If th fir plac was not ass mbl d in its final position, th 2 suppli d angl irons must b s cur d to
th fir box b for th fir plac is mov d! Attach th angl irons by scr wing th suppli d scr ws through th
hol s in th angl iron, and into th fir plac bas . Do not ov r-tight n th scr ws.

that both inner and outer pipe sections are locked; when installing double wall “snap lock” chimneys, it is
important to ensure that the joint between the chimney sections is locked. Ch ck by pulling chimn y up-
ward aft r locking: th chimn y will not pull apart if it is prop rly lock d. Scr ws ar not n c ssary to k p
th chimn y tog th r. If chimn y is 30’ or high r, a support s ction provid d by th chimn y manufactur r is
r quir d aft r a straight chimn y abov th fir plac run, or abov a r turn lbow aft r a straight chimn y
run. Th support is d sign d to r li v th xtra w ight load on th fir plac and lbows wh n high chim-

CHIMNEY INSTALLATION
This installation will outlin a typical chimn y installation using 12” doubl wall air-cool d chimn y. For sp cific
installation instructions for class “A” chimn y, r f r to th chimn y manufactur rs installation manual.
WARNING: Do not install chimney smaller than the required minimum. See page 6 for chimney size requirements.
Each doubl wall chimn y s ction consists of an out r pip , flu pip and on
wir spac r. Th pip s ctions ar not pr -ass mbl d and must b ass mbl d
pi c by pi c as th chimn y is install d. Wh n starting th chimn y dir ctly
on th fir plac , th flu pip s ction must b install d first with th h mm d
nd down. Th out r pip s ction can th n b install d ov r th flu pip s c-

2. Attach th lbow with straps to th flu s ction that will b
us d to conn ct th lbows. Make sure this elbow is con-
nected to the lue section in the right direction. Attach
th s two s ctions to th lbow on th anchor plat /
damp r and start r collar. Align th top lbow to th hol
you hav alr ady cut into th c iling. Th n, s cur th
straps to th walls to hold th ass mbly in plac . Th s sup-
port straps will n d to fully support all v rtically install d
chimn y.
To achi v d sir d offs t you may install combinations of
12”, 18”, 24”, 36”, and 48” l ngths in-b tw n lbows.
3. Th r maining straight flu s ctions r quir d to r ach th

lbow on th fir box. Onc th whol flu is in position,
attach th ass mbl d straight flu s ctions to th top l-
bow, th r by compl ting all flu conn ctions. Make sure

6. Now you ar r ady to install th t rmination cap, and storm collar. First install th storm collar around th
xt rior of th flu s ction xt nding abov th roof flashing. Tight n and slid down ov r th top of th
roof flashing, s cur and s al. Install th t rmination cap as p r manufactur r’s instructions. S FIG 8.

2. Cut a hol and mount th 4” dry r v nt on th xt rior wall or on
th sid of th roof mount d chas as shown in FIG 11.

DO NOT CONNECT OPEN END TO THE FIREPLACE. See FIG 13
