The en_line speed is controlled by a lever (red knob)

grass bagging. "LOW" position isfor light cutting,
trimming, and fuel economy (See Fig. 3).
TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT
=Raise wheels for low cut and lower wheels for
high cut.
° Wheels are set in low cut for shipping. Adjust cut-
ting height to suit your requirements. Medium

OIL:
• Remove engine oil cap with dipstick or oil fill plugo
Fill to "FULL" line on dipstick or to top of slot
clown in filler hole. Use about I pint or 1!2 liter
of Sears 30W oil or equivalent. SAE 10W 30 oil
can also be used. DO NOT use SAE 10W 40 oil.
The total oil capacity of your engine is 21 oz. or
0.62 liters. Fill only to "FULL" line on dipstick or
to top of slot down in oil filler holeo
DO NOT over fill. The first fill on a new engine
uses about 1 pint. Check oil level and add oil as
needed to bring to proper level.
• Pour oil slowly, DO NOT over fill.
GAS:
* Fill gasoline tank with fresh, clean unleaded
gasoline. DO NOT USE PREMIUM GASOLINE.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER FILL TANK (SEE
FIG. 2)_
WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blend-
ed fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol)
can attract moisture which leads to separation and
formation of acids during storage_ Acidic gas can
damage the fuel systemof an engine while in storage.
To avoid engine problems, the fuel system shouldbe
emptied before storage for 30 days or longer. Drain
the gas tank, start the engine and let it run until the
fuel/ines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel

next season. See Storage Instructions for additional
informatiom
Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in
the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.
TO STARTENGINE
= To start a cold engine, push primer five (5) times
before trying to start. Use a firm push. This step
isnot usually necessary when starting an engine
which has already run for a few minutes.
* Push engine speed selector lever forward to
"HIGH" position.
* Hold operator presence control bar down to the
handle and pull starter handle quickly. Do not
allow starter rope to snap back.
* To "STOP" engine, release operator presence
control bar.
NOTE: In cooler weather it may be necessary to
repeat priming steps. In warmer weather over prim-
ing may cause flooding and engine wilt not start° If
you do flood engine wait a few minutes before at-
tempting to start and DO NOT repeat priming steps.
MOWINGTIPS OPERATION
IPIIII '1
,' Under certain conditions, suchas very tall grass,
it may be necessary to raise the height of cut to
reduce pushing effort and to keep from
overloading the engine and leaving clumps of
grass clippings_
* For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of
cut and raise the rear of the mower housing one
(I) wheel adjuster setting higher than the front for
better discharge of grass_
oWhen using a rear bagging mower in moist,
heavy grass, clumps of cut grass may not enter
the grass catcher. Reduce groundspeed (pushing
speed) andlor run the mower over the area a seo
cond time.
* For better' grass bagging and most cutting con-
ditions, the engine speed should be set in the
"HIGH" (fast) position.
•If a trail of grass clippings is left on the right side
of a rear bagging mower, mow in a clockwise
direction with a small overlap to collect the clip-
pings on the next pass. -
', For' side discharge mowers, cutting in a counter-
clockwise direction, starting at the outside of the
area to be cut, spreads grass clippings more even-
ly and puts lessload on the engine. To keep clip-
pings off of walkways, flower beds, etc., make
the first cuts in aclockwise direction.
• Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled
with dirt and dust with use and catchers will col-
lect less grass. To prevent this, regularly hose cat-
cher off with water and let dry before using.

Use only a Sears authorized replacement blade to
get the best cutting results.
NOTE: We do not recommend Sharpening blade - but"
if you do, be sure the blade is balanced°
CONTAINER
TO SHARPEN BLADE:
oThe blade can be sharpened with a file or on a
grinding wheel. Do not attempt to sharpen while
on the mower.
• Care should be taken to keep the blade balanc-
ed. An unbalanced blade will cause excessive
vibration when running and eventual damage to
mower or engine.
o To check blade balance, drive a nai! into a beam
or wall. Leave about one inchof the straight nail
expose& Place center hole of blade over the head
of the nail. If blade is balanced, it should remain
in a horizontal position. If either end of the blade
moves downward, blade is not balanced.
Sharpen the heavy end until the blade is
balance&
GRASSCATCHER
(If Purchased As An Accessory)
Check your grass catcher often for damage or
deterioration° Through normal use it will wear, tf cat-
cher needs replacing, replace only with a maufac-

Give the mower model number when ordering.
NOTE: The catcher may be hosed with water, but must
be dry when used.
