For two years from date ofpurchase, when this Craftsman Lawn Mower is maintained,
lubricated, and tuned up according tothe operatingand maintenance instructionsinthe
owner's manual, Sears willrepair free of charge any defect in material or workmanship.
If this Craftsman Lawn Mower is usedfor commercialor rental purposes, this warranty
applies for only 90 days from the date of pumhase.
This Warranty does not cover:
•Expendable itemswhich become worn during normaluse, suchas rotary mower
blades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.
•Repairs necessary because ofoperator abuse or negligence, includingbent crank-
shafts and the failure to maintain the equipment according tothe instructionscon-
tained in the owner's manual.
Warranty sewice isavailable by returningthe Craftsman power mower to the nearest

PREPARATION:
•Alwaysthoroughlycheck the area to be
mowed and clear it of all stones,sticks,
wires,bones, and otherforeign objects.

your mower.

beforestartingyourmower. Never

•Mow only indaylightor goodartificial
light.
OPERATION:
•Keep your eyesand mind onyour mower
and the area being cut. Do not letother
interestsdistractyou.
•Do notmowwet orslipperygrass.Never
runwhile operatingyour mower. Always
be sureofyourfooting-- keep a firm
holdonthe handlesand walk.
•Do notput handsorfeet near or under
rotatingparts.Keep clearofthe discharge
openingat all times.
•Alwaysstopthe enginewhenever you
leave orare not using your mower, or
beforecrossingdriveways,walks, reads,
and anygravel--coverad areas.
•Never directdischargeof matedal toward
bystandersnorallow anyonenear the
mowerwhile you are operatingit.
•Before cleaning,inspecting,or repaidng
yourmower, stopthe engine and make
absolutelysurethe blade and all moving
partshave stopped.Then disconnectthe
spark plugwireand keep itaway from the
spark plugto preventaccidental starting.

•Do notchange the govemor settingsor
overspeedthe engine. Engine damage or

and repairas required.
•Do notrunthe engine indoors.Exhaust

•Never cutgrass by pullingthe mower

slopes, never up and downor you might

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE:
•Check the blade and the engine mount-

ACAUTION: Always disconnect spark
plug wire and place wire where it cannot
contact spark plug in order to prevent

HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWER
ENGINE SPEED
The engine speed was set at the factory
for optimum performance. Speed is not
adjustable.
ENGINE ZONE CONTROL
ACAUTION: Federal regulations require
an engine control to be installedon this
lawn mower in order to minimize the risk of
blade contact injury. Do not under any
oimumstances attempt to defeat the
function ofthe operator control. The blade
turns when the engine is running.

NOTE: In coolerweather itmay be

warmer weather over primingmay cause
floodingand engine will not start. If you do
floodengine, wait a few minutes before
attemptingto start and do not repeat
priming steps.
MOWING TIPS
•Under certain conditions, suchas very
tallgrass, it may be necessary to raise
the height of cut to reduce pushing effort
and tokeep from ovedoading the engine
and leaving clumps of grass clippings. It
may also be necessary to reduce
groundspeed and/or runthe lawn
mower over the area.a.second time.
•For extremely heavy cuffing, reduce the
widthof cut by overlappingpreviously
cut path and mow slowly.
•For better grass bagging and most
cuttingconditions,the engine speed
should be set in the fast position.
•When using a rear discharge lawn
mowerin moist,heavy grass, clumpsof
cut grass may notenter the grass
catcher. Reduce ground speed (push-
ingspeed) and/or runthe lawn mower
over the area a secondtime.
•If a trailof clippingsis left on the right
side of a rear discharge mower, mow in
a clockwise directionwith a small
ovedap tocollect the clippingson the
next pass.
•Pores in cloth grass catchers can,
become filled with dirtand dustwith use
and catchers willcollect less grass. To
prevent this, regularlyhose catcher off
withwater and let dry before using.
•Keep top of engine around starter clear
and clean of grass clippingsand chaff.
This willhelp engine airflow and extend
engine life.

•The specialmulchingbladewillrecutthe
grassclippingsmanytimesand reduce

notbe noticed.Also,the mulched grasswill
biodegradequicklyto providenut,antsfor
thelawn. Alwaysmulchwithyourhighest
engine (blade)speed asthiswill providethe
bestrecuttingaclionofthe blades.
•Avoidcuttingyourlawnwhen itiswet. Wet
grasstendstoformclumpsand interferes
withthemulchingaction,The besttime to
mow yourlawnisthe earlyaftemcon.At
thistimethe grasshasdriedandthe newly
cutarea witlnot be exposedtothedirect
sun.
•Forbest results,adjustthe lawn mower

Ifthelawnisovergrownitwill be necessary

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The warranty on this lawn mower does not
cover items that have been subjected to
operator abuse or negligence. To receive
full value from the warranty,operator must
maintainmower as instructedinthis
manual.
Some adjustments will need tobe made
periodicallyto propedymaintainyour unit.
All adjustments in the Service and
Adjustments sectionof this manual should
be checked at least once each season.
• Once a year, replace the spark plug,
replace air filter element and check
blade for wear, A new spark plug and
clean/new airfilter element assures
proper air-fuel mixture and helpsyour
engine run better and last longer.
• Follow the maintenance schedule in this
manual.

BLADE CARE
For best results, mower blade must be
kept sharp. Replace bent or damaged
blades.
TO REMOVE BLADE
•Disconnect spark plug wire from spark
plug and place wire where it cannot
come in contactwith spark plug.
•Turn lawn mower on its side. Make sure
air filter and carburetor are up.
•Use a wood blockbetween blade and
mower housing to prevent blade from
turningwhen removing blade bolt.
•Protect your hands'with gloves and/or
wrap blade with heavy cloth.
•Remove blade bolt by turningcounter-
clockwise.
• Remove blade and attaching hardware
(bolt, lock washer and hardened
washer).
NOTE: Remove the blade adapter and
checkthe key inside hub of blade adapter.
The key must be in good conditionto work
properly. Replace adapter ifdamaged.
TO REPLACE BLADE
•Positionthe blade adapter onthe engine
crankshaft. Be sure key in adapter and
crankshaft keyway are aligned.
•Positionblade onthe blade adapter
aligningthe two (2) holesin the blade
withthe raised lugs on the adapter.
• Be sure the trailing edge of blade
(opposite sharp edge) is up toward the
engine.
• Install the blade boltwith the lock
washer and hardened washer intoblade
adapter and crankshaft.
•Use block of wood between blade and
lawn mower housingand tighten the
blade bolt,tuming clockwise.
•The recommended tighteningtorque is
3540 ft. Ibs.

TOSHARPENBLADE
NOTE:Wedonotrecommendsharpening
blade-but if you do, be surethe blade is
balanced.
Care shouldbe taken to keep the blade
balanced. An unbalanced blade will cause
eventual damage to lawn mower or
engine.
• The blade can be sharpened with a file
or on a gdndingwheel. Do not attempt
tosharpen while on the mower.
• To check blade balance, drive a nail into
a beam or wall. Leave about one inchof
the straightnail exposed. Place center
hole of blade overthe head ofthe nail
If blade isbalanced, itshould remain in
a horizontalposition. Ifeither end of the
blade moves downward,sharpen the
heavy end untilthe blade isbalanced.

Change the oil after every 25 hours of
operation or at least once a year if the
lawn mower is not used for 25 hours in

Check the crankcase oil level before

•Clean by gentlytapping on a flat
surface. If very dirty, replace cartridge.

engine above the factory high speed

engine-govemed high speed needs

proper equipment and expedence to make
anYnecessary adjustments.
TO ASSEMBLE GRASS CATCHER
• Insert leg of tubular frame through front
opening of grass catcher and thread
frame intosewn hem of bag.
NOTE: Keep bag hem gathered on the
straight leg of the tubular frame.- -
•When frame comes out the other end of
sewn hem, immediately workthe end of
frame down inside the bag as shown in
inset.
•Slide sewn hem evenly around the
tubular frame untilboth ends of frame
are exposed outof the front opening.
•Assemble lower frame totubular frame
as shown. Be sure handle is outside of
bag and frames are fully seated as
shown in inset.
•Slipvinyl bindings over frame.
NOTE: If vinyl bindings are too stiff,hold
them inwarm water for a few minutes. If
bag gets wet, let itdry before using.
•Close the flip lid. Flip lid mustbe dosed
while operatinglawn mower.
&CAUTION: Do not run your lawn mower"
withoutclippingdeflector or approved
grass catcher in place. Never attempt to
operate the lawn mower with the rear door
removed or propped open.
