The capacitors on an energizer PCA can be charged; and can potentially give a dangerous electric shock. Before
opening an energizer case, the battery must be disconnected (at the white connector end). After opening an energizer,
the discharge process MUST first be performed before touching any components, including the transformer.
Servicing of these components is only to be performed by qualified personnel.
What you should wear (as a service agent during servicing).
These are compliant with regional standards.
Gloves
Industrial quality safety gloves to mitigate the risk of injury to your hands (e.g. to prevent
cuts from burrs or sharp edges; protect you from electrical discharge and to keep hands clean
from handling metal coatings).
Safety Glasses
Safety plastic glasses for use if operating any machinery that is pneumatic or air driven (e.g.
air impact wrenches). This is to mitigate the risk of injury to the eyes.
Receiving feedback from
Service Centres
about the type of field problems encountered is an important part of product
development. To assist us with improving the product, we ask that a
Service Report
be returned to us on a regular
basis. With this information, we can accurately identify trends in the field and offer appropriate technical support.
We also encourage you to provide us with your comments about the product. We value your feedback!
This service guide and other resources are available on the
Datamars Livestock service portal
, see page 5. We
encourage you to provide us with feedback on the documentation.

WARNING!
Static discharge can damage some components on the device. Such damage may degrade an electronic
component and may result in faults developing within that component over time.
When working on this device, ensure that the correct anti-static procedures are used:
•Use an electrostatic discharge wrist band and earth strap.
•Work only on a grounded bench top, and ideally have the energizer sitting on an anti-static rubber mat
(this also prevents the case front from being scratched).
•Wear insulating (electrostatic discharge) gloves where possible.
•Use a suitable lead-free anti-static soldering iron and solder sucker.
•Store PCAs and LCDs in anti-static bags.
WARNING!
Ensure the energizer is switched off and the battery is disconnected and removed before disassembling the
energizer.
Use a mains isolating transformer and an RCD safety cut-out switch when operating an energizer with the
case front removed.
This product generates high voltages that may be present LONG AFTER the product has been switched off
and the battery disconnected. Discharge the storage capacitors using a discharge tool.
Refer to details on discharging capacitors; or contact Datamars if you have issues with static discharge.

If an energizer is under warranty, you should perform all required repairs to ensure customer satisfaction.
However, if an energizer is no longer under warranty and requires an expensive repair, you should discuss this
with the customer before proceeding. Sometimes a customer may prefer to purchase a replacement energizer.
This service guide and all instructions are designed for Service Level 1 assistance. Where more involved or skilled
repairs or servicing is required please arrange by contacting Datamars. See page 4.
•A glossary of terms/acronyms used is available at the end of this service guide. See page 15.
•User guides are available from speedrite.com, stafix.com, pel.co.nz and patriotglobal.com
•Technical bulletins and other service guides are available on the
Datamars Livestock service portal
, see page

Insert a known good battery. Test the energizer’s output voltage and output energy. Measure the energizer’s
pulse interval, see page 9. If the energizer passes these performance tests, advise the customer that their own
battery is likely to be faulty.
If any mechanical damage is apparent, repair or replace parts as required. See the parts list on page 1. To replace
the handle, see page 10. To replace the switch knob, see page 11.
Test the energizer’s output voltage and output energy. Measure the energizer’s pulse interval, see page 9.
All energizers except house brand models HB17 and HB33. If the energizer is faulty, replace the module and
output transformer (supplied in the case lid). See page 14.
House brand models HB17 and HB33 only - If the energizer is faulty and is still within its warranty period, supply
a replacement energizer. See page 14.

WARNING!
Do not connect to mains or line operated equipment (e.g. mains/line power supply). When
performing this test, always use a battery to power the energizer.
To ensure accuracy of measurement, the output voltage of this energizer should be tested using either an
Energizer Performance Meter (EPM) or a Digital Voltmeter (DVM) (part number 880 0001-487 (822645) PEL,
880 0000-178 (806217) Patriot, 880 0001-528 (824663) Stafix, 880 0001-529 (824724) Speedrite).

Do not connect to mains or line operated equipment (e.g. mains/line power supply). When
performing this test, always use a battery to power the energizer.
Either use the pulse interval information provided by the Tru-Test Energizer Performance Meter (EPM) or, use a
