VEHICLENUMBER:Thevehiclenumber(serial
number)islocatedona plate(Fig.1)whichisattached
totheinstrumentpanelbetweentheleftwindshield
wiperpivotandtheleft "A"post.Itcaneasilybeseen
bylookingthroughthewindshieldfromtheoutside.
Allvehiclenumberscontainthirteendigits.The
vehiclenumberisa code whichtellsthecarline(1st
digit), priceclass(2nddigit),bodytype(3rdand
4thdigit),enginedisplacement(5thdigit),modelyear
(6thdigit),assemblyplant(7thdigit),andvehicle
sequencenumber(lastsixdigits).
Thisvehiclenumberisalsostampedontheengine
blockandthetransmissionhousing.Onsixcylinder
enginesitisona padlocatedbelowthenumbersix
sparkplugatthecylinderheadjointface(Fig.2).

numeralsdesignatebuilddate,thenextnumeralin-
dicatesshiftonwhichenginewasbuilt.On318,340
and360cubicinchenginesthefirst letterwilldesig-
nateseries(modelyear),thenextletterwilldesignate
manufacturingplant,thenextthreenumeralswill
indicatecubicinchdisplacement,thenextoneortwo
letters(dependingontypeofengine)willdesignate
model,thefollowingfournumeralsdesignatebuild
date, andthelastfournumeralsdesignatetheengine
sequencenumber.All198and225cubicinchengines
havetheserialnumbersstampedonthejointfaceat
rightcorner,adjacenttonumberonecylinderbore

distributor(Fig.10).
Onallengines,informationidentifyingundersized
crankshaft,oversizedtappets,lowcompression,over-
sizedcylinderbores,enginebuiltthatday,andthe
shiftisstampedonthecylinderblockatvariousloca-
tionsdependingonengine.198and225cubicinch
enginesarestampedonthejointfaceattherightcor-
ner,adjacenttonumberonecylinderbore(Fig.8).
318, 340and360cubicinchenginesarestampedon
thefrontoftheblockjustbelowtheleft cylinder
head(Fig.9).400and440cubicinchenginesare
stampedonthecylinderblockjustforwardofthe
numbertwocylinderboreadjacenttothedistributor

GENERALINFORMATION
Theprocedures for maintaining "newcar" appear-
ance of materialcovered in thissection are thosemost
generallyused. The final results may vary dueto
application of agents by personsinexperienced at this
work and alsofrom the type of foreignelement onthe
material. For satisfactoryresults,appearancemain-
tenanceshould be performed by qualifiedexperienced
personnelusing the recommendedagents andes-
tablishedserviceprocedures.
VINYLROOFCOVERING
In a wellventilatedarea,saturate a cleancloth
withrecommendedVinylRoofCleaner and Condi-
tioner.Wipesurfaceusing a circularmotion.With
anothercleancloth,wipeexcessmaterialfrom top.
Allow todryforten minutes. For generalsoilremoval
use a laundry bar soapsuch as Fels-Naptha or equiva-
lent.
INTERIORTRIM
Moststains canbe removedwhilethey are fresh
andhave not hardened andset into the fabric. An
exception ismudor clay,whichshould be allowed to
dry so thatmost ofitcanbe brushed off.Itis helpful,
toknow the nature ofthe stainingmatter sothe
correctcleaningagentmay be used.
Removerearseat and vacuum the interiorthor-
oughlyincludingunder the frontseat.
Allvinylinteriorsshould be shampooedcompletely
includingheadlining,seats,doorpanels,instrument
panel,packageshelf and carpeting or floor mat.
UseChryslerPartsMulti-PurposeCleaner No.
2298-532 or equivalent, on everythingexceptcloth
fabrics and carpet.Multi-Purposecleanersshould be
usedwithoutdilution(just asit comes outofthecan).
First,saturate the areawith a sponge,scrubwith a
brush and wipe off with a cleantowel or softcloth.

Cloth Seat Inserts or Carpeting
Prior to shampooingclothseatinserts or carpeting,
obviousspotsshould be removedwithspotremover;
such as ChryslerPartsOversprayRemover, No. 2421-
089, or equivalent, isan excellentspotremover.
Use a soapflake solutionsuch as IvoryFlakes or
equivalent and warmwater,make the mixture a thick
suds. In usingthismaterial,applysuds tothe area to
becleanedwith a naturalsponge,scrubwith a brush
andwipeexcesssuds off with a cleancloth.Adduphol-
sterytint tothe upholsteryshampoosolution, ifitis
necessary to restorefadedcolor on clothupholstery
orcarpeting.When the tint is added, use onlyenough
tobring the materialback to originalcolor. A natural
sponge is recommended for thisoperationsince it will
notretain thedye tint andcanbe rinsed foruseon
otherareas.
Nylon Upholstery
Scrub inthe samemanner as otherclothfabrics
usingsoapflake solution.Faded or badlysoilednylon
upholstery maybe redyed. Itis recommendedthat
seatsfirst be washed and thoroughlydried.
Mask offany areasthat arenottobe dyed. Mix
NYLONDYE—50% DYEand50% lacquerthinner
andadjustspray gunto widerangespraywith 20to
25 lbs. pressure.Spray the DYE-and-thinnermixture
over the entirearea.Allow todryand cross-spray a
secondcoat of DYEfullstrength.Allow the material
to dryat leasttwohours ina wellventilatedarea.
Mix the soapflakes sudssolution.Spongeover
sprayedarea.Thiswillgive the material a soft,natu-
ralfeel,reducechemicalodor and helpreduce any
looseparticlescaused by spraying.
RemoveoverspraywithOversprayRemover.Appli-
cation of NYLONDYEchanges the color ofthe nylon.
Soonce you havedecided to spray it,you must dyeall
matchingareasunless you haveperfectlymatched the
color.

arebadlysoiled or fadedshouldfirst be washedwith
Multi-PurposeCleaner or equivalent.Repair if neces-
sary.
After the material is washed and dried,mask off
othercoloredareasexcept theonetobe dyed.Soak
alint-freecloth in lacquer-thinner and wipe it over
theareas.This removessurfacefilm and waxes and
prepares the material for dyeing. As soon asthema-
terialfeels"tacky," itis ready to spray.
Adjust the smallspray gunto about 25to30lbs.
pressure.Spray one section ata timewithLEATHER
ANDVINYL DYE. Apply one thincoatfirst and allow
to dry. Spray a secondcoat by cross-spraying the first.
Allow todryand removemaskingtape.
Whenworking ona two-color job,be sure to allow
thefirst coat todry, preferablyovernight,before
maskingover the newlysprayedarea.
Headliner Restoration
Fabric or naturalclothheadliningthat is dirty, but
notdeeplystained, maybe restored by thoroughly
shampooingaccording tothe followingdirections:
(1) Mixa soapflake solutionsuch as IvoryFlakes
orequivalent in warmwater and work uptoa very
richsuds.
(2)Cover the seatswithwaterrepellentmaterial
topreventspottingcaused by Cleanerdroppingfrom
theheadlinerwhilecleaning.
(3)Spongesuds onthe headliner.Start atthe left
rearcorner and clean one section ata time.Work the
sudsinto the fabricwith a circular or back and forth
motion.
(4)Whensectionlooksclean,finish off with the
sponge by laying thenapinone direction.(Otherwise
afterdrying,somesections of headlinerwilllook
darker or lighterthanothers).Beginwashingnext
section of headliner by overlappingapproximately
threeinches of washedarea to avoidpossiblestreak-
ing.
(5)Wash thesun visors inthe samemanner asthe
headliner.
(6)Once the cleaningprocess is started,continue
until the entireheadliner is completed.Otherwise
stains may appearwhere the first sectionwashed, has
dried.
CarpetRestoration
Vacuumcarpetingthoroughly,payingparticular at-
tention to underseat(front and rear)areas.
Ifcarpets are slightlysoiledfirst removespots with
OversprayRemover and thenshampoowithChrysler
PartsUpholsteryCleaner,No.1316-182 or equivalent.
Mixshampoo 8 to1 if slightlysoiled,stronger ifre-
quired.
ApplyCleanersolutionwith a naturalsponge and
agitatesudswith a scrubbrush.
Rubber and Vinyl Mat Restoration
ShampoothoroughlyusingMulti¯PurposeCleaner,
asrequired.
PackageShelf Restoration
Morefrequentlythan notthe packageshelf pre-
sents a dusty,soiled or shabbyappearance and must
bereconditioned. Itis best and usuallyeasier tore-
move the fiber-board typepackageshelvesfrom the
car for repainting.Wipedown the materialfirst with
aclothsaturatedwithlacquerthinner.Respray,using
Leather and Vinyl Dye mixed to match the color. Al-
low todryand reinstall inthecar.
STATIONWAGONS
Stationwagons are alsoreconditioned inthe same
manner as othercarsexcept forthe cargoarea. Fre-
quentlythisareareceivesconsiderableabuse and
usuallyneedsspecialtreatment.
Cargodecksthat are soiled butnot scuffed and
wornshouldfirst be thoroughlycleanedwithMulti-
purposeCleaner, No. 2298-532 or equivalent,after
vacuuming. Ifthe areathenlooksacceptable,spraying
withChryslerPartsReviv-A-Color, No. 2421-097 or
equivalent,willbringback the newlook.
Cargodecksthat are soiled,scuffed and wornalso
should be thoroughlycleanedwithMulti¯Purpose
Cleaner.After itis thoroughly dry, mask the area as
required and wipe it downwithlacquerthinner. Mix
Leather and VinylDye to match the existingcolor and
spraywith the small gun. After itis thoroughly dry,
spray the areawithReviv-A-Color, No. 2421-097 or
equivalent,removemasking and clean up overspray.
LUGGAGECOMPARTMENT
Removesparetire and tools, set themaside and
vacuum the entireluggagecompartmentareathor-
oughly.Shampooluggagecompartmentcompletely
withChryslerPartsMulti-PurposeCleaner, No. 2298-
532, or equivalent.
There are severalconditionswhich maybe encoun-
tered ina luggagecompartmentaccording toits origi-
naldesign.Treatment of each is describedbelow.
(1) LuggagecompartmentswithRubberorVinyl
Mats: Aftershampooingcompletely,luggagecompart-
mentwith a textured mat, should be allowed todry
thoroughly.Solidcoloredsideboardsshould bere-
painted to matchoriginalcolor and then the trunk
may be improved by sprayingwithChryslerParts
Reviv-A-Color,No.2421-097, or equivalent.
Solidcolormats in luggagecompartmentshould be
repaintedwithMulti-Purpose Dyeor equivalentdress-
ing to matchoriginalcolor.

poundsofairpressureforspraying.Maskexposed
areasattopofrearfendersandrearendpanels,if
sprayingwithlargegun.
Forguncleaningafterusingsplatterpaint,first
water,followedbylacquerthinnerisrecommended.
Tools and Spare Tires
CleantoolsandsparetirewithMulti-Purpose
Cleanerorequivalent.Rustedareasontoolsshouldbe
sandedorcleanedwithsteelwool.Repainttoolsand
redresssparetirewithChryslerPartsBlackMulti-
purposeDyeandDressing,No.2298-525,orequiva-
lent.Replacetoolsandequipmentintrunkwhen
everythinghasdriedthoroughly.
Cleanaroundthedecklidopeningusinga cloth
saturatedwithoversprayremoverandforfinal detail,
redresstherubberdecklidsealusingBlackMulti-
PurposeDyeandDressing,orequivalent.
Tires
Donotcleantireswithscouringpowder,steelwool
orotherabrasivetypecleaners.Cleanwhitesidewall
tirewitha stiffbristlebrushandwhitesidewall
cleaner,ormulti-purposecleaner2298-532orequiva-
lentandrinsewithclearwater.Scuffmarkscanbe

Glass
Donotuseputtyknifes,razorblades,steelwool,or

Interiorglasssurfacesshouldbethoroughly
cleanedweeklytoremovealltracesofsmokeand
otherfilms.
Exteriorglasssurfacesarebestcleanedwiththe
useofa commerciallymadecleaner.Donotscrape
offsmearsfrombugs,roadtarsorothersimilar
objects,usewarmwaterortherecommendedsol-
ventstoremove.
Duringthewintermonths,snow,iceandfrostcan
beremovedwitha plasticorrubbertypescraper,or
witha commerciallymadesolvent.Donotusemetal
objectstoremovedepositsfromglass.
Drain Holes
Thedrainholes,inthebottomofcowlplenum
chamber,doorsandfloor sills(rockerpanels)
shouldbeinspectedregularlytoinsureunobstructed
drainage.Removeroadtars,mudandotherforeign
matterimmediately.Shouldbaremetalbeexposed,
surfacetreatmetalandrefinish.
Thedrainholesinthequarterpanelwell areasare
sealedwitha removableplasticplug.Theplugs
shouldonlyberemovedwheneveritisnecessaryto
cleanordrainfluids fromthewell area.
Lubrication
Tomaintaineaseofoperation,thehood,door,deck
lidandtailgatehingesshouldbelubricatedwiththe
recommendedlubricantsattherecommendedinter-
vals. RefertotheBodyLubricationUnitfortypeof
lubricantandlubricationpoints.

(1)Upholsteryingoodcondition,notfaded,but
stained.IfstainpersistsafterusingSpotRemover,

sulationoncementedarea.Handpresstoassureposi-
tiveadhesionandpositionspringnutonpanel.
(2)Positioncowlsidetrimpanelextensionunder
windshieldgarnishmouldingandinstallscrew.
(3)Positiontrimpanelunderclipatupperfront
andtocowlsideinnerpanel.Installretainingscrews.
(4)Installfloor sillinnermouldingoverpanelend
andinstallscrews.
OUTSIDEAIRVENTCONTROLCABLE
Replacement
Theoutsideairinletventcontrolcable,housingand
knobisservicedasanassembly.Theventcontrol
handleismountedoncolumncover.Todisengagethe
venthandlefromthecolumncover,pullventhandle
