VEHICLENUMBER:Thevehiclenumber(serial
number)islocatedona plate(Fig.1)whichisattached
totheinstrumentpanelbetweentheleftwindshield
wiperpivotandtheleft "A"post.Itcaneasilybeseen
bylookingthroughthewindshieldfromtheoutside.
Allvehiclenumberscontainthirteendigits.The
vehiclenumberisa code whichtellsthecarline(1st
digit), priceclass(2nddigit),bodytype(3rdand
4thdigit),enginedisplacement(5thdigit),modelyear
(6thdigit),assemblyplant(7thdigit),andvehicle
sequencenumber(lastsixdigits).
Thisvehiclenumberisalsostampedontheengine
blockandthetransmissionhousing.Onsixcylinder
enginesitisona padlocatedbelowthenumbersix
sparkplugatthecylinderheadjointface(Fig.2).

numeralsdesignatebuilddate,thenextnumeralin-
dicatesshiftonwhichenginewasbuilt.On318,340
and360cubicinchenginesthefirst letterwilldesig-
nateseries(modelyear),thenextletterwilldesignate
manufacturingplant,thenextthreenumeralswill
indicatecubicinchdisplacement,thenextoneortwo
letters(dependingontypeofengine)willdesignate
model,thefollowingfournumeralsdesignatebuild
date, andthelastfournumeralsdesignatetheengine
sequencenumber.All198and225cubicinchengines
havetheserialnumbersstampedonthejointfaceat
rightcorner,adjacenttonumberonecylinderbore

ofthenumbertwocylinderboreadjacenttothe
distributor(Fig.10).
Onallengines,informationidentifyingundersized
crankshaft,oversizedtappets,lowcompression,over-
sizedcylinderbores,enginebuiltthatday,andthe
shiftisstampedonthecylinderblockatvariousloca-
tionsdependingonengine.198and225cubicinch
enginesarestampedonthejointfaceattherightcor-
ner,adjacenttonumberonecylinderbore(Fig.8).
318, 340and360cubicinchenginesarestampedon
thefrontoftheblockjustbelowtheleft cylinder
head(Fig.9).400and440cubicinchenginesare
stampedonthecylinderblockjustforwardofthe
numbertwocylinderboreadjacenttothedistributor

GENERALINFORMATION
Theprocedures for maintaining "newcar" appear-
ance of materialcovered in thissection are thosemost
generallyused. The final results may vary dueto
application of agents by personsinexperienced at this
work and alsofrom the type of foreignelement onthe
material. For satisfactoryresults,appearancemain-
tenanceshould be performed by qualifiedexperienced
personnelusing the recommendedagents andes-
tablishedserviceprocedures.
VINYLROOFCOVERING
In a wellventilatedarea,saturate a cleancloth
withrecommendedVinylRoofCleaner and Condi-
tioner.Wipesurfaceusing a circularmotion.With
anothercleancloth,wipeexcessmaterialfrom top.
Allow todryforten minutes. For generalsoilremoval
use a laundry bar soapsuch as Fels-Naptha or equiva-
lent.
INTERIORTRIM
Moststains canbe removedwhilethey are fresh
andhave not hardened andset into the fabric. An
exception ismudor clay,whichshould be allowed to
dry so thatmost ofitcanbe brushed off.Itis helpful,
toknow the nature ofthe stainingmatter sothe
correctcleaningagentmay be used.
Removerearseat and vacuum the interiorthor-
oughlyincludingunder the frontseat.
Allvinylinteriorsshould be shampooedcompletely
includingheadlining,seats,doorpanels,instrument
panel,packageshelf and carpeting or floor mat.
UseChryslerPartsMulti-PurposeCleaner No.
2298-532 or equivalent, on everythingexceptcloth
fabrics and carpet.Multi-Purposecleanersshould be
usedwithoutdilution(just asit comes outofthecan).
First,saturate the areawith a sponge,scrubwith a
brush and wipe off with a cleantowel or softcloth.

Cloth Seat Inserts or Carpeting
Prior to shampooingclothseatinserts or carpeting,
obviousspotsshould be removedwithspotremover;
such as ChryslerPartsOversprayRemover, No. 2421-
089, or equivalent, isan excellentspotremover.
Use a soapflake solutionsuch as IvoryFlakes or
equivalent and warmwater,make the mixture a thick
suds. In usingthismaterial,applysuds tothe area to
becleanedwith a naturalsponge,scrubwith a brush
andwipeexcesssuds off with a cleancloth.Adduphol-
sterytint tothe upholsteryshampoosolution, ifitis
necessary to restorefadedcolor on clothupholstery
orcarpeting.When the tint is added, use onlyenough
tobring the materialback to originalcolor. A natural
sponge is recommended for thisoperationsince it will
notretain thedye tint andcanbe rinsed foruseon
otherareas.
Nylon Upholstery
Scrub inthe samemanner as otherclothfabrics
usingsoapflake solution.Faded or badlysoilednylon
upholstery maybe redyed. Itis recommendedthat
seatsfirst be washed and thoroughlydried.
Mask offany areasthat arenottobe dyed. Mix
NYLONDYE—50% DYEand50% lacquerthinner
andadjustspray gunto widerangespraywith 20to
25 lbs. pressure.Spray the DYE-and-thinnermixture
over the entirearea.Allow todryand cross-spray a
secondcoat of DYEfullstrength.Allow the material
to dryat leasttwohours ina wellventilatedarea.
Mix the soapflakes sudssolution.Spongeover
sprayedarea.Thiswillgive the material a soft,natu-
ralfeel,reducechemicalodor and helpreduce any
looseparticlescaused by spraying.
RemoveoverspraywithOversprayRemover.Appli-
cation of NYLONDYEchanges the color ofthe nylon.
Soonce you havedecided to spray it,you must dyeall
matchingareasunless you haveperfectlymatched the
color.
