ME1110 Digital Modulation Technique
Quick Start Guide - 6/16
1.Quick Setup and Verification
1.1 The following steps demonstrate the basic setup of the ME1110 training kit together with an
oscilloscope.
Step 1: Setting Up the Device Connections
Step 2: Selecting the Modulation Format and Verifying the Waveforms on the Oscilloscope
Step 3: Displaying the Modulated IQ Signals in the 89601 VSA software
IMPORTANT
The training kit can be damaged by excessive power levels from the instruments. Please adhere
strictly to the power levels recommended in the instructions.
Turn off the training kit when it is not in use.
Step 1: Setting Up the Device Connections
Note: If only an oscilloscope with
analog channels is used (without
the digital channels), skip step 1.
Connect the Clock (J6A),
Baseband Data (J6B), and
Symbol Clock (J6C) output to
the oscilloscope’s digital
channel 0-2 through the Digital
Probe (Flying Leads).
Connect the I signal output
(TP1) to the oscilloscope’s
channel 1 through the
oscilloscope’s probe.
Connect the Q signal output
(TP2) to the oscilloscope’s
channel 2 through
oscilloscope’s probe.
Connect the RF out signal to
the oscilloscope’s channel 3
by using a BNC-to-SMA
coaxial cable.
Supply a 5 V input voltage to
the receiver module and
power it up.
Make sure all devices are
properly connected before
proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Selecting the Modulation Format and Verifying the Waveforms on the Oscilloscope
Refer to the Mode Table
printed on the ME1110
modulation kit and look for
the Mode number of the
QPSK.
Press on the PB1 button
until the 7-segment LED
display shows Mode 4 to
change the modulation
format to QPSK .
Adjust the settings on the
oscilloscope and observe
the waveforms generated
by the ME1110 Digital
Modulation Kit.
Note that the impedance of
the oscilloscope’s channel
3 is changed to 50 Ω.

Step 3: Displaying the Modulated IQ Signals in the 89601 VSA Software
Connect the RF out signal to the
oscilloscope’s channel 1 through the
BNC-to-SMA cable.
Use an USB cable to connect a PC to
the oscilloscope.
Note: The 89601 VSA software should
be preinstalled in the PC.
Set the oscilloscope to interface with
the 89601 VSA software. (Via the USB
port)
Instructions
Keystrokes
Set the
Input/Output
controller
Press [Utility], followed
by {I/O}. The Current
I/O Configuration dialog
box is displayed.
Select the

Step 3: Displaying the Modulated IQ Signals in the 89601 VSA Software (cont.)
Ensure that the instrument
is detected together with
its VISA address, as
shown in the side figure. If
the oscilloscope is not
detected, click the Change
Properties button to
reinitialize the instrument.
Upon completion, close
the Agilent Connection
Expert window.
Launch the 89600 VSA
software.
The VSA software will
initialize and the detected
hardware will be displayed.
The oscilloscope front
panel is now disabled.
If this is the first time
connecting the sampling
hardware to the computer,
configure the instrument
so that the VSA software
recognizes it. Go to
Utilities > Hardware >
Discovered Instruments
and you should see the
oscilloscope connected on
the USB port in the
Hardware window as
shown in the side figure
Select the oscilloscope by
clicking on it, and then go
to the Configuration tab
in the Hardware window.
Click to add a new
Analyzer based on the
oscilloscope.

Step 3: Displaying the Modulated IQ Signals in the 89601 VSA Software (cont.)
In the VSA software
window, select Utilities >
Frequency Reference.
Select Internal to use the
internal clock from the
oscilloscope.
Select MeasSetup >
Frequency. Set the
center frequency to 10
MHz and the frequency
span to 3 MHz, as shown
at the side.
Select MeasSetup >
Measurement Type >
Digital Demod to
demodulate the QPSK
signal.
Select MeasSetup >
Digital Demod Properties
to set the demodulation
properties. In the Format
tab, set the following
parameters: Format =
QPSK, Symbol Rate = 1
MHz, Points/Symbol = 4,
and Result Length = 80
Symbols. A warning about
insufficient data for digital
demodulation may appear.
Ignore this and continue
with the setup, then click
the Run button.
