INSTANT JUMPSTART SYSTE
M
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Duracell® Instant Jumpstart System.
This product is part of a family of advanced personal renewable
energy devices from Battery-Biz Inc.
This Instant Jumpstart System is designed to revive weak car
batteries andjumpstart your vehicle, or provide emergency back-up
12 V DC power.
The Instant Jumpstart System is intended for use on 4 and 6 cylinder
gasoline powered cars and light trucks. Do not use on 6 V or 24 V
electrical systems vehicles. This Instant Jumpstart System is
designed to work if the vehicle's starter clicks or the engine turns
over too slowly to start. This product is not designed to start a vehicle
with a heavily discharged battery or for use on vehicle batteries that
are shorted or sulfated; they will not hold a charge and will need to be
replaced. See a professional technician.
Other uses for the Instant Jumpstart System include:
•backup power for equipment such as cell phones, PDAs,
notebooks, digital cameras, and other small portable devices,
•emergency light.
Important: The Instant Jumpstart System leaves the factory charged,
but due to battery self-discharge, it is recommended to charge it
immediately. This may take up to 48 hours. Recharge after every use
and every month if not used to protect the internal battery.

Features
Instant Jumpstart System Operation
Choosing a Location
The Jumpstart should be operated only in a location that is:
Dry. Do not allow water or other liquids to drop or splash on
the Jumpstart.
Cool. Ambient air temperature should be between 0 and 40ºC
(32 and 104ºF)—the coolerthe better within this range.
Ventilated. Leave at least 2" (5 cm) clearance around the Jumpstart
for air flow. Ensure that the ventilation openings are not
obstructed.
Safe. Do not operate the unit in the same compartment as
batteries or in any compartment capable of storing
flammable liquids like gasoline.
Protected from battery gases.Do not operate the Jumpstart where it
will be exposed to battery gases. These gases are very
corrosive, and prolonged exposure will damage the
Jumpstart.
Using the Instant Jumpstart System for the First Time
Prior to jumpstarting a vehicle or operating your 12 V DC appliance,
ensure that the battery of the Instant Jumpstart System is fully
charged.
Note: Press and hold the Battery Level button to view the battery
charge status.
Note: If the battery level is low but has not been fully discharged,
recharging with the AC Charger may take up to 28 hours.
Recharging with the AC Charger
Note:The Instant Jumpstart System battery level LEDs are only
accurate when the Jumpstart has been disconnected from all
appliances and all charging sources for 15 minutes.
Note:When the battery is fully charged, all four LEDs will be lit. As
charge decreases, the number of lit LEDs will decrease. When only
one LED is lit, the unit is discharged.
Note:Recharging with the AC Charger is a true “plug-in-and-forget”
charging method. We recommend leaving the AC Charger connected
when the Instant Jumpstart System is not in use.
To recharge the Instant Jumpstart System:
1. Disconnect any 12 V DC appliances and turn the light OFF.
2. Plug the AC Charger into a standard AC wall outlet.
3. Insert the AC Charger cable end into the AC Charger Input Socket
(see Features).
The Battery Status LED changes from red to green when charging is
complete (about 28 hours if the battery is completely discharged).
Important: The 28-hour charging time for the Jumpstart assumes that
there is 120 V AC at the AC wall outlet. If the voltage is less than 120
V AC, it may take more than 28 hours to fully recharge the Jumpstart.
If, after 28 hours of charging, the Battery Status LED remains red,
continue to charge the unit for another 12 hours. The unit will be
ready for use even if the Battery Status LED remains red.
Important: If you keep the Instant Jumpstart System in storage, the
battery will self-discharge over time. Remember to recharge the
batteryevery month to keep the Instant Jumpstart System
operational.
Note: Once fully charged, the charging current automatically reduces
to a maintenance charge mode, and the Jumpstart may be left
permanently connected to the AC Charger.
Using the Flashlight
The Instant Jumpstart System has an incandescent flashlight which
will operate for about 30 hours before the unit needs to be recharged.
The On/Off switch is located above the light (see Features).
Operating 12 V DC Appliances
The Instant Jumpstart System can operate as a 12 V DC power source
to portable appliances that draw 15 A or less from a 12 V DC power
outlet.
.
Note: The fewer watts a 12 V DC appliance draws, the longer the
Instant Jumpstart System will operate before recharging is required.
The table below lists typical 12 V appliances that can be used with
the Instant Jumpstart System.
a) Represents actual power consumption as measured on sample appliances.
b) Operating times assume a fully charged 17 Ah battery and may vary based
on model or brand of appliance.
c) Represents talk time available from 5 recharge cycles.
To operate a 12 V DC appliance:
1. Open the protective cover on the DC Power Outlet of the Instant
Jumpstart System.
2. Plug the 12 V DC appliance into the DC Power Outlet and turn
the 12 V DC appliance on (if required).
If the 12 V DC appliance draws more than 15 A (or has a short-
circuit defect), the 15 A external fuse will blow. If this occurs,
unplug the 12 V DC appliance and replace the fuse with a new
15 A fuse.
3. Fully recharge the Instant Jumpstart System as soon as possible
after each use. As the DC Power Outlet is internally wired directly
to the unit’s battery, extended operation of a 12 V DC appliance
may result in excessive battery discharge.
Jumpstarting a Vehicle’s Engine
You can use the Instant Jumpstart System to jumpstart a vehicle or
boat engine (most 4 cyl. and 6 cyl.) that has a 12 V starting battery
using the supplied jumpstart cables.
Important:Closely follow the succeeding instructions including
warnings for jumpstarting your vehicle as they may be different from
the instructions supplied with other jumpstarting products or
jumpstarting cables.
To jumpstart a vehicle:
1. Turn off the vehicle or boat ignition and all accessories.
2. Engage the park or emergency brake and place the transmission in
park for an automatic or neutral for a manual.
Note: Many vehicles with manual transmissions require that the
gear is set to neutral and that the clutch is fully in before starting.
3. If jumpstarting a boat engine, purge the engine compartment and
bilge of all fumes before jumpstarting.
4. Position the Instant Jumpstart System on a flat, stable surface near
the battery and away from all moving parts of the engine.
Important:Ensure that the Power Switch is OFF.
5. Connect the red positive (+) clip of the cables to the positive (+)
terminal of the engine battery.
The battery’s positive terminal is usually larger in diameter than
the negative terminal. In most vehicles, the battery’s positive
terminal has a red wire connected to it.
6. Connect the blacknegative (–) clip of the cables to the engine
block, cylinder head, or other stationary heavy metal part of the
motor.
If the red Instant Jumpstart System Connection LED illuminates
and sounds an alarm, then reverse polarity has been detected.
Correct polarity must be established before proceeding.
Disconnect the jumpstart clips from the vehicle’s battery and redo
steps 5 and 6 in this procedure.
If the Green Instant Jumpstart System Connection LED is
illuminated, then proceed to the next step.
7. Switch ON the Instant Jumpstart System Power Switch.
Before starting the engine, make sure the Instant Jumpstart
System and the cables are clear of belts and fans.
8. Crank the engine for 4 seconds or until it starts, whichever is first.
9. Switch OFF the Instant Jumpstart System Power Switch.
10.Remove the red positive (+) clip and then the black negative (–)
clip from the vehicle.
11.Store the jumpstart clips in the appropriate holder on each side of
the Instant Jumpstart System.
Important:Recharge the Instant Jumpstart System as soon as
possible after each use.
Connecting to an External Battery
You can extend battery operating times of DC appliances connected
to the socket by connecting the Jumpstart to a larger external battery.
For example, an external 60 Ah battery gives approximately four
times the operating time of the Jumpstart internal 17 Ah battery.
Important: See the WARNING statements from “Jumpstarting a
Vehicle’s Engine”
To connect the Instant Jumpstart System to an external battery
using the jumpstart clips:
1. Ensure that the Instant Jumpstart System Power Switch is OFF.
2. Connect the red positive (+) clip of the cables to the red positive
(+) terminal of the external battery.
3. Connect the blacknegative (–) clip of the cables to the black
negative (–) terminal of the external battery.

Instant Jumpstart System Maintenance
Routine maintenance is required to keep your Jumpstart operating
properly. Occasionally clean the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth
to remove the accumulated dust and dirt.
Maintaining the Battery
All rechargeable batteries gradually discharge when left standing, and
you need to recharge them periodically to maintain maximum battery
capacity. The AC Charger supplied with the Jumpstart is designed to
regulate the charging process, ensuring that the battery is always fully
charged but never overcharged. To ensure safe recharging and
maximum battery life, recharge the Jumpstart only with the supplied
charger or approved battery chargers.
Recharging with the AC Charger
See “Recharging with the AC Charger” under “Instant Jumpstart
System Operation”.
Recharging Using the DC Charging Cable
Important:Although the charge regulation circuitry in the Jumpstart
does not operate with this charging method, most vehicle voltage
regulators will ensure that the Jumpstart is not overcharged.
1. While the vehicle engine is running, plug one end of the DC
Charging Cable into the DC Power Outlet of the Instant Jumpstart
System.
2. Plug the opposite end of the DC Charging Cable into the vehicle’s
lighter socket or 12 V accessory outlet.
3. Once the Instant Jumpstart System is fully charged or if your
vehicle’s engine is not running, disconnect the DC Charging Cable
from both sockets. Most of the Instant Jumpstart System’s capacity
will be restored in 2 ½ hours while the vehicleengine is running.
Note: The Battery Status LED will not illuminate when the Jumpstart
is recharged through the DC Charging Cable.
Important: Do not leave the Instant Jumpstart System permanently
connected to the vehicle’s lighter socket or 12 V accessory outlet.
Recharging with a Generator’s Regulated 12 V DC
Outlet
Refer to the Owner’s Guide accompanying your generator for detailed
instructions on connecting a 12V load, like the jumpstart, to your
generator.
You can recharge using a generator in several ways:
•Using the AC Charger to recharge the Jumpstart from a generator
is possible, but would require extended generator running time.
•Using a generator which has an auxiliary regulated 12 V DC
output designed for charging 12 V DC batteries. Most generators
are equipped with them. Use this power source for faster charging.
•Using a generator with a regulated 12 V DC lighter socket. Follow
the connection instructions in “Recharging Using the DC Charging
Cable”.
Recharging from a Solar Panel
Small, unregulated 12 V solar panels rated to produce a maximum of
2.5 A (or 30 W) can be used to charge the Jumpstart through the AC
Charger Input Socket. You will need to purchase a standard 5.5 mm
OD × 2.5 mm ID (0.217 × 0.10") coaxial DC (barrel type centre
positive) connector to mate with the AC Charger Input Socket. These
connectors are available at consumer electronics stores.
1. Connect the solar panel’s red positive (+) wire to the coaxial plug’s
inner or centre contact.
2. Connect the solar panel’s black negative(–) wire to theplug’s
outer contact.
Once the connector is inserted into the AC Charger Input Socket and
the solar panel is placed in the sun, the Jumpstart charges
automatically just as with the AC Charger. It takes about six hours in
direct sunlight to recharge the Jumpstart from a 2.5 A solar panel.
Replacing the Emergency Light Bulb
1. Turn the flashlight switch off.
2. Pop out the plastic lens cover.
3. Gently grasp the bulb and twist clockwise to unscrew the bulb.
Note: There’s a triangular notch at the neck of the bulb which
should align with the reflector assembly’s bulb socket collar.
4. Insert a replacement bulb of the same type and rating into the light
reflector assembly.
5. Gently grasp the bulb and twist counter-clockwise to screw the
bulb in.
6. Snap in the lens cover.
