1.0 Model Description
2.0 AES II System Function
An AES II r frig rator independently s l cts b tw n th possibl n rgy sourc s of 230 V,
12 V, and gas. Th control l ctronics automatically nsur that th r frig rator is suppli d from
th n rgy sourc optimal at a giv n tim . You can not operate the refrigerator with more
than one energy source simultaneously. You may also not manually s l ct a c rtain n rgy
sourc . Th l ctronic th rmostat controls th r frig rator during "ON/OFF" op ration, ind p nd-
ntly of th n rgy sourc .
The basic function for the AES II is: cooling under all conditions. Th amount of voltag
appli d ach tim is th r for monitor d during l ctrical op ration (230 V or 12 V). If th volta-
g falls b low th r l vant limit valu s (200 V for mains pow r supply voltag and 11 V for batt ry
op ration), gas op ration is s l ct d (s low oltage operation). For its operation, the AES II
refrigerator requires a 12 V continuous plus supply to operate the control electronics.
Operation on a 24-V power supply is not possible.
2.1 Priorities
Th r frig rators s l cts th typ of n rgy according to th following prioriti s:
1) 230V: if th voltag > 200 V
2) 12V: if th motor is running (D+ signal from th g n rator) and voltag > 11V
3) Gas: if 230V is not pr s nt or < 200V, or 12V voltag < 11 V

2.3 Low Voltage Operation
Th so-call d "low voltag gas op ration" is an xc ption. If th l ctrical pow r supply voltag
in 230-V or 12-V op ration is insuffici nt to maintain th cooling op ration, th AES switch s to
gas op ration und r c rtain conditions. A y llow LED displays this stat . Th conditions for swit-
ching ov r to gas op ration ar d scrib d in S ction 2.2. If gas op ration is s l ct d du to low
voltag , th r frig rator r mains in gas op ration for 30 minut s to avoid a continuous switching
back and forth (oscillation) b tw n th n rgy sourc s. Aft r 30 minut s of gas op ration, th
l ctronics ch cks th appli d voltag at r gular int rvals. If th pow r supply voltag again
b com s suffici nt, th r frig rator again switch s to 230-V or 12-V op ration.
2.4 Tank Stop
Th AES l ctronics do s not b gin op rating th r frig rator on gas until th motor has b n
turn d off for 15 minut s to avoid an und sir d switchov r to gas op ration during a tanking
proc dur .
2.5 Thermostat Sensor
Th th rmostat s nsor consists of an l ctrical r sistor (NTC). Th r sistor is install d on th
vaporator cov r, but it do s not hav a dir ct conn ction to th vaporator coil. Th purpos is
to m asur th air t mp ratur s on th insid of th r frig rator. This is how th l ctronics
always controls th r frig rator at th t mp ratur that has b n s t onc , v n for changing
ambi nt t mp ratur s within th fram work of th unit's capacity.
Important:: Th s nsor must not com into dir ct contact with th aluminum vaporator (spac
s nsor is not an vaporator s nsor) to provid corr ct functioning.
The de ice goes into continuous operation if the thermostat sensor is defecti e.

3.3 Display Module
Th display modul is locat d on th control frontplat of th AES II r frig rator.
You must op rat th pow r switch (A) to turn th d vic on.
Th AES function LED (B) th n lights up gr n, and th middl LED (E) lights up y llow to display
th s l ct d t mp ratur s tting.
You can us th mom ntary-contact pushbutton for t mp ratur s l ction (D) to chang th r fri-
g rator s ction t mp ratur s tting. Th low voltag LED (C) lights up y llow if th r frig rator
has s l ct d gas op ration to maintain th r frig rating capacity du to low voltag in an l ctri-
cal supply sourc (230 V or 12 V).
If th r is a fault during gas op ration (gas couldn't b lit, gas contain r mpty, tc.), th AES
LED (B) flash s r d. In this cas , th d vic do s not continu to cool. You must liminat th
gas fault and start th r frig rator again. (Us th pow r switch to switch th r frig rator off and
on again.)
Important:: If th r is a fault during gas op ration and you don't notic it b for th r frig rator
chang s to 230 V, for xampl , du to a priority chang , th AES LED (B) again chang s to
gr n until th cooling function has b n stablish d again. How v r, th n xt tim it wants to
chang to gas op ration, th fault is display d again, and gas op ration is not start d. Th r a-
son is that th r ar l gal r gulations that do not p rmit th d vic to carry out an automatic
r s t. If you hav a gas fault display d by a r d flashing AES LED (B), you absolut ly must
acknowl dg this gas fault by using th pow r switch to switch th d vic off and on again.

3.4 Power Module
Th pow r modul (A) is locat d on th backsid of
th r frig rator. A multicor cabl conn cts th
pow r modul and th display modul .
There are fuses to protect both electrical heating
cartridges located in the power module. All th
l ctrical compon nts for controlling th various op -
rating mod s ar locat d in this modul . Th
modul 's print d circuit board has b n s al d
compl t ly wat r tight to prot ct against
nvironm ntal influ nc s.
3.5 Reigniter
Th r ignit r is also locat d on th backsid of th r frig rator. Th pow r modul suppli s th
r ignit r3 with voltag . R f r to Publication Bull tin Numb r 599 4716-54/5 (Pag s 13-14) for
d tail d information about th ignition d vic s us d.
3.6 Thermocurrent Adapter
Th th rmocurr nt adapt r is locat d b tw n th igni-
tion fus and th th rmo l m nt coupling. Th pow r
modul controls th th rmocurr nt adapt r. Th adap-
t r s rv s to switch off gas op ration during th chan-
g from gas to anoth r op rating mod by int rrupting
th th rmocurr nt to th ignition fus .
4.0 Installation
To guarant th ord rly functioning of th AES II r frig rator, corr ct l ctrical
installation is absolut ly n c ssary.
Th 12-V conn ction to th batt ry must b a 2-pol conn ction.
Th conn ction cabl must b 6 mm2and b 10 mm2for gr at r l ngths.
Th D+ control input must b wir d from th g n rator to th 12-V supply t rmi-
nal (cabl cross-s ction 1 or 1.5 mm2, oth rwis 12-V op ration is not possibl ).
5.0 Troubleshooting
5.1 Diagnostics Mode
Th AES II syst m has a built- in diagnostics program us d to t st basic syst m functions.
Th t st program off rs th capability to switch th r frig rator d lib rat ly into c rtain op rating
stat s.
Th following t st s qu nc s ar availabl :
- S lf-t st for th display modul and pow r modul and for communication b tw n both
compon nts
- AC op ration (230 V) t st
- DC op ration (12 V) t st
- Ignition d vic t st

a) Preparations
Th AES II d vic must b conn ct d to a 230-V supply lin and a 12-V supply. You must con-
n ct a gas cylind r and op n th gas supply to t st th gas function.
b) Test execution
You must proc d as follows to arriv at diagnostics op ration:
1. Switch off th d vic
2. Pr ss th button for th t mp ratur s tting and k p this button d pr ss d. Us th pow r
switch to switch th d vic on.
3. K p th button for th t mp ratur s tting d pr ss d until th AES op ration LED switch s to
r d and diagnostics op ration b gins.
The AES operation LED is red during diagnostics operation.
A s lf-t st for both l ctronic modul s is first carri d out, and all th display modul LEDs ar
controll d onc . Th l ft t mp ratur LED th n lights up. Diagnostics op ration has s l ct d th
original position.
You can s l ct th following t sts wh n you activat th t mp ratur s l ction switch:
LED 1: All outputs ar switch d off, standby mod
LED 2: Mains pow r supply, 230-V h ating cartridg is controll d
LED 3: Lifting magn t, th rmocurr nt adapt r, and th ignition d vic * ar controll d
LED 4: 12-V op ration, 12-V h ating cartridg is controll d
LED 5: Ignition d vic is controll d
* Important: For saf ty r asons, it is possibl to control th lifting magn t just onc . If th lifting
magn t is controll d again, you must first switch th d vic off and th n start diagnostics
op ration again.
C) Terminating diagnostics operation
You can us th pow r switch at any tim to switch th d vic off and t rminat diagnostics op -
ration. If som on unint ntionally forg ts to switch off th diagnostics op ration, th d vic swit-
ch s back to cooling op ration aft r four minut s.
5.2 Error Analysis and Elimination
Errors according to priority:
Cause 1: Th lifting magn t do s not r main tight n d for th r quir d 20 s conds.
Th th rmo l ctric voltag is insuffici nt, and th ignition fus clos s.
Elimination 1: Exchang th l ctronic.
Cause 2: Th spark plug fir s v n though th r is a flam pr s nt (no flam r cognition).
Th l ctronics switch to fault aft r 25 s conds.

b) Th ignition d vic is d f ctiv . (S Bull tin 599 4716-54/5, Pag s 13-14.)
Eliminaion 2: Chanc th spark plug or th r ignit r.

1. Gas Operation
Error: Fault LED flashes red

Cause 3: Aft r th lifting magn t drops, th AES again tri s to ignit and th n go s to a
fault aft r 25 s conds. Is th th rmo l m nt on th th rmocurr nt adapt r
loos ?
Elimination 3: Hand-tight n th scr w conn ction (SW 8mm).
Cause 4: Th th rmo l ctric voltag is not suffici nt to k p th ignition fus op n. Th
r ason is du to w ar and t ar and compon nt tol ranc s, for xampl :
1. Bad th rmo l m nt (soot formation)
2. Th th rmocurr nt adapt r's int rnal r sistanc is too high.
3. Th holding curr nt for th magn tic ins rt for th ignition fus is too much.
Elimination 4: Exchang th th rmocurr nt adapt r and th ignition fus and/or
th rmo l m nt. (S Bull tin 599 4721-91/7, Pag 16.)
Cause 5: Th lifting magn t do s not pr ss th ignition fus down d ply nough, so
th r is no m chanical contact in th magn tic ins rt
Elimination 5: To ch ck aft r tight ning th lifting magn t, pr ss down on th r d ignition fus
button. If th flam stops aft r th lifting magn t drops, th lifting magn t or th
ignition fus must b adjust d.
In th factory s tting, th AESII l ctronics control th lighting. If th r is a lighting d f ct, first
ch ck th light. If th lighting do s not function v n if th light is intact, you must proc d as fol-
lows:
1. Disconn ct and insulat th whit
and y llow cabl on th conn c -

2. Conn ct th B and C conn ctions

9.0 Operation of AES II with solar charging regulators
Operation of Electrolux refrigerators with AES II control and solar charging regulators.
It is curr ntly possibl to op rat El ctrolux AES r frig rators using two typ s of solar charging r gula-
tors which ar quipp d with an AES output signal:
SR 240 DUO (Votronic, Gr b nhain, T l: [phone]
SAC50X or SAC50E (Solar Display Controll r) with matching charging r gulator (M y r
Solart chnologi , 88682 Sal m, T l: [phone]
Both of th s solar charging r gulators, wh n us d in conjunction with an AES II, will nsur corr ct
op ration of an AES II r frig rator quipp d with a solar charging r gulator and simultan ously off r
batt ry discharg prot ction.
It is important that th conn ction instructions provid d by th manufactur r of th solar charging r gu-
lator ar adh r d to. Pl as not that th solar input of th AES is a s nsor input, which must b con-
n ct d to th corr sponding s nsor output of th solar charging r gulator. Do not conn ct th standard
12V output (commonly r f rr d to as on-board pow r supply +) as this would r sult in continuous 12V
op ration of th r frig rator and th batt ry would b compl t ly discharg d in a v ry short tim . Th
solar input of th AES has a function similar to th D+ input, which will only allow 12V op ration with
th motor (g n rator) running, and if suffici nt pow r is availabl for 12V op ration.
Du to th high curr nt flow r quir d for 12V op ration th solar unit must b abl to provid
at l ast 10-12 amp r s, v n wh n full sunlight is not availabl , to pr v nt ov rloading th on-
board batt ry.
Corr ct op ration of th r frig rator cannot b guarant d with all oth r kinds of conn ction,
particularly wh n solar charging r gulators without AES switching outputs ar us d.
