1.0 Introduction
TheUSBinterface ispreferredtotheCOM portwithRS-232 interface inpersonal
computertechnology.Toconnecttheperipheral devicesof theRS-232 interface,the
USB/RS-232 adaptersalongwiththedriverareappliedtocreateso-calledvirtual
COM onthePC.
ELOE218 isadevice whichconvertsvirtual COM totheasynchronouslineof the
symmetricsignal via theUSBinterface. Thesignalstransmissiontothehalf-duplex
RS-485 interface allowstherange, communicationpartners´numberandthe
transmissioninterference immunitytoincrease.
1.1Useoftheadapter
heconverterincreasestransmissionimmunityagainstelectrical disturbance hence it is
intendedtobeusedintheenvironmentswherelightningover-voltageisnotnecessary
tobeconsidered. Theadapterallowsthetransmissionrateup to1Mbps. This
maximumattainableratedecreasesduetothelinelengthand/oritsimpedance growth.
Recommendedmaximumlinelengthis1200 mat therateof 9600 bps.
2.0Operationprinciples
TheadapterE218 convertstheRS-485
interface totheUSBinterface,transmits
TxDandRxDsignals.Thetransmissionis
half-duplexthat meansswitchingontheRS-
485 transmitteronlyduringitsown
transmittingtoallowothercommunication
partners(max.32) totransmit.TheRS-485
transmitterisautomaticallycontrolled.
TherearetwoLEDindicators-READY and
DATA. READY indicatesthat driversareinstalledcorrectly, DATAindicatesthat
data aretransmitted(red) orreceived(green)overRS-485.

3.0Installation
E218 adapterinstallationisdescribedinthispart. Therearetwoproblemstobe
solved:thehardwareinstallationandtheSWdriverinstallation.
3.1USBinterface connection
TheadapteroperatesasperspecificationUSB2.0full-speed(12 Mbps).TheUSB
adapterconnectorisof Amaletype.
3.2 RS-485 Installing
ModelELOE218 canbesuppliedwithvariousRS485 connectors.

3.3Installingdriver
TheE218 adaptermaybeappliedonthePCcomputersundertheMS Windows
98/Me/2000/XP,Vista orLinux.Thedriversaresuppliedtogetherwiththeotherfiles
at theinstallationCD.Theymaybedownloadedfromtheproducerweb-sides
www.elo.cz.
Theproperinstallationof thedriversisindicatedvia thelit READY indicatoronthe
coverconnectedtotheadapter.
Followingpartof theusermanual describestheprocess of installingunderMS
WindowsXP only.
3.3.1InstallingvirtualportunderWindowsXP
1.WhenthePCturnedonandtheadapterconnectedtotheUSBportvia thecableis
detectedtheoperatingsystemreportsanewhardwarehasbeenfound: Nalezen
novýhardware:ELOE218 Adapter.
2.ThesystemrunstheAdd NewHardwareWizardautomatically.Failingthis,the
Controlpanel maybeusedtostarttheWizard.Selectthethirdoptioninthe
Wizardmenu-„Ne,nyníne“(„No,notnow“)–andclickthebutton„Další“
(„Next“):
3.SelectthesecondoptionintheWizardmenu„Instalovat ze seznamu idaného
umístění“(“Install fromalistorspecificlocation”)andclick„Další“(„Next“):
4.InthenextWizardmenuselect„Přihledánízahrnouttotoumístění“andbythe
helpof button„Procházet“(„Browse“)selectthedirectory e218_drivers onthe
suppliedCD. Thenclick„Další“(„Next“):
5.Don’tbeworryiftheWizzardwill write:„Warning“andclick„Pokra ovat“
(„Continue“)::

6. Nowclick“Finish”inthedialogboxof theinstallingdevice completion.
7.Thenit isnecessarytocontinuewiththevirtual portinstallation.Systemwill write
„Newhardwarefound“againandtheinstallationisrunningthesamewayas
showninstepsfrom2to4:
8.Whenthecorrectdriversof virtual COM portarefoundanewWarningis
displayed. Click„Pokra ovat“(„Continue“):

3.3.2UninstallingvirtualportunderWindowsXP
AdapterE218 mustbeconnectedtoPCduringtheprocess of uninstalling.
1.Selectthepart Přidat neboodebrat programy (Add orremoveprograms)from
Ovládací panely (Controlpanels).henselecttherow E218 RS485-USBAdapter.
Press button Změnitneboodebrat (Changeorremove)andconfirmbypressing
Ano.(Yes) Adapteranditsdriversareuninstalled:

twopiecesof E218,connectthem(see chapter3.2).PCwithSWHyperTerminal can
serveastypical enddevice.
