INTRODUCTION
This Quick Installation Guide provides instructions about how to make
the physical connections to your Ericsson Multi Service Edge De-
vice HL950 and also how to power up and perform the initial con-
figuration.
For detailed information about management of the HL950, please
refer to the Command Reference Manual which is included on the
supplied CD-ROM.
Prior to connecting and installing any of the equipment, read the
information about Product Care and Maintenance on page 16.

PACKAGE CONTENTS
The HL950 package should include the items listed below. Inventory
the contents and make sure that all parts are included in the package
before proceeding with the installation. If any component is missing
or damaged, please contact the dealer/service provider from which
the equipment was purchased.

For kits including a Legacy V.35/V.36/X.21 Interface Module, one of
the following adapter cables is included:
V.35 dapter cable
V.36 dapter cable
X.21 dapter cable

PLACEMENT
The HL950 can be placed on a flat surface or mounted in a standard
19 inch (48,26 cm) rack. Place the HL950 in a position that offers
access to the interface connectors on the back of the unit.
DESKTOP PLACEMENT
When the HL950 is placed on a flat surface, the rubber feet pro-
vided should be mounted on the bottom of the unit to secure a sta-
ble placement.
RACK MOUNTING
Use the Rack mounting kit provided when mounting the HL950 in
a 19 rack. This kit includes two rack mounting brackets, four nut
clips, four flat head screws and four round head screws.

The HL950 can be rack mounted with either the front or the back of
the chassis facing forward.
There are two sets of mounting holes located on the left and right
sides of the chassis. The forward-most set is used to mount the chas-
sis with the front facing forward; the other set is for mounting the unit
with the back facing forward.
NOTE! When mounting the HL950 in a rack, lea e a minimum of 1
inch (2,54 cm) space abo e the unit to ensure proper cooling.
Attaching Brackets
Use the screws provided to attach the mounting brackets to the chas-
sis as shown in the applicable figure on the next page:

Installation in Rack
Install the chassis in the rack using the screws provided. Use two
screws for each side.

6 Placement
Grounding the Unit
NOTE! When the HL950 is rack mounted it is recommended that
you ground the unit as described below.
Ground the unit by connecting a ground strap cable to the earth
(ground) terminal on the back of the chassis. See figure below.
Clamp or screw down the other end of the ground strap cable to a
suitable grounding point at your site.

CABLE CONNECTION
This chapter describes the cable connection for all interfaces.
CONNECT A CONSOLE TERMINAL
The HL950 needs to be connected to an SCII terminal in order to
perform the initial configuration.
Connect the RS 3 Console cable provided to the CONSOLE port
on the rear panel of the HL950.
Connect the other end to the serial port on your PC (e.g. Com1).

CONNECT THE ETHERNET NETWORK
The HL950 needs to be connected to a PC in order to perform the
initial configuration.
Connect one end of the RJ45 Ethernet cable provided to the
Ethernet 1 port on the rear panel of the HL950.
Connect the other end of the cable to your PC.

The Ethernet 2 port is reserved for future use.
Description of the Link/ ctivity indicators:
Link (L) - Lit when the Ethernet link is established.
Activity (A) - Lit momentarily when data is received or transmitted.

8 Cable Connection
CONNECT THE WAN INTERFACE
Connect the RJ11 SHDSL cable provided to the SHDSL 1 port,
the RJ11 plug fits into the RJ45 connector.
Connect the other end to the network operators SHDSL jack.
CONNECT THE LEGACY INTERFACE
The HL950 is delivered with either a Legacy V.35/V.36/X.21 Interface
Module or a Legacy E1 Interface Module for connection to the local
network. For all legacy interfaces, the unit will act as a DCE unit.
Legacy V.35 / V.36 / X. 1 Interface Module
Connect the Adapter cable provided to the Sub-D 60 pin connec-
tor located on the Legacy V.35/V.36/X.21Interface Module on the rear
of the HL950.
NOTE! There is a specific cable for each legacy mode.
Connect the other end of the dapter cable to the V.35/V.36/X.21
connector on the existing legacy equipment.

NOTE! Connector 1 is implemented for single channel SHDSL o er
one twisted pair or dual channel SHDSL o er two twisted pairs in the
same cable. For dual-channel SHDSL with separate cables for each
channel, connect the RJ11 SHDSL cable (pro ided) to connector 1
and a second RJ11 SHDSL cable (not pro ided) to connector 2.
Connect the other end of both cables to the network operator's
SHDSL jacks.
Description of the Link/ ctivity indicators:
Link (L) - Blinks during link establishment. Lit when the SHDSL link
is established.
Activity (A) - Lit momentarily when data is received or transmitted.

Legacy E1 Interface Module
For 1 0 ohms balanced operation, connect a 120 ohms (default
strapping) twisted pair cable (not provided) with four wires (2 pairs)
to the RJ45 connector located on the E1 Interface Module on the
rear panel of the HL950.
For 75 ohms unbalanced operation, connect two 75 ohms co-
axial cables (not provided) to the DIN 1.0/2.3 connectors located on
the E1 Interface Module on the rear panel of the HL950.
NOTE! Remember to change the strapping on the E1 card when
using 75 ohms unbalanced operation. The procedure is described
below.
Connect the other end of the cable to your E1 transmission equip-
ment.

Description of the Carrier/Sync indicators:
Carrier - Lit when receive carrier detected.
Sync - Lit when link synchronization is obtained.
Strapping instructions
When using 75 ohms unbalanced operation, change the strap-
ping on the E1 card according to the following instructions:
1. Power down the unit, if applicable.
. Ground yourself and place the HL950 on a grounded surface.
3. Identify the E1 interface module bracket on the rear of the unit
(see figure above). Unscrew the two screws and gently remove
the E1 card from the chassis.

4. Insert the jumpers provided on LL pins (marked JP1 to JP10)
as shown in the figure below. (Default configuration for balanced
operation is NO jumpers inserted).

5. Insert the board; ensure that the connector pins and holes match
each other. Then push the board firmly until the bracket rests
against the unit housing.
6. Insert the two screws and tighten them.
7. Connect and power up the unit.
CONNECT TO AN AC POWER OUTLET
Ensure that the on/off switch on the rear panel of the HL950 is OFF .
Connect the AC Power cord provided to the power jack on the rear
panel of the HL950. Plug the other end into an C power source.
The HL950 operates in the 100-240 voltage range (50/60Hz).
The HL950 may be connected to mains power via an Uninterruptable
Power Supply (UPS) for higher availability.

CONFIGURATION
fter you have connected the power and interface cables, you are
ready to power up the HL950.
POWER UP
The Power/Status indicators (located both at the front and rear pan-
els) provide power, activity and status information:
When steady on: Power is present and the HL950 is ready.
When flashing: Software is booting.
To power up the HL950, flip the power switch on the rear panel to
ON. The Power/Status indicators will start to blink and messages
will begin to appear in your terminal emulation program window.
When the Power/Status indicators is lit the diagnostics and boot
routines are completed. The HL950 is ready for initial configuration
as described in the next section.
PERFORM INITIAL CONFIGURATION
The initial configuration is performed from the L N side using soft-
ware and operator specific configuration files provided on the Con-
figuration CD included in the package.
The Configuration CD contains the following:
n installation program that controls installation (if any) and ex-
ecution of other needed components.
simple TFTP server.
RS232 terminal emulation program capable of executing script
files. Responses from the HL950 are presented on the screen.
script file with HL950 commands. The main function of this
script file is to initiate the L N interface with a fixed IP address
and to restore the system configuration image using TFTP.
HL950 system configuration data, with operator specific con-
figuration data.

1 Power Up and Initial Configuration
Follow the step-by-step instructions below to perform the initial con-
figuration:
1. Connect the SHDSL W N.
. Connect a Windows PC through the provided Console cable
to the CONSOLE port and the provided RJ45 Ethernet cable
to Ethernet port 1.
3. Configure the PC with a fixed IP address on the same subnet as
the HL950 L N. For example 192.168.0.2.

4. Insert the Configuration CD provided in the PC. The installation
program starts automatically.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
6. When the initial configuration procedure has been completed,
the HL950 automatically reboots and starts up the W N with
operator-adapted parameters.
7. fter reboot, the installation program checks that the W N is up
and running.
8. The installation program then updates the HL950 with the latest
software version.
The HL950 is now up and running.

PERFORM ADDITIONAL CONFIGURATION
dditional (re-) configuration and software upgrades can be performed
remotely from the W N using telnet and tftp. The management is
performed on a private IP network, with authenticated telnet login.
For additional specialized configuration procedures, refer to the Com-
mand Reference Manual which is included on the supplied Configu-
ration CD.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATION
The HL950 is a highly flexible and modular CPE (Customer Premises
Equipment) voice and data communications product.
The hardware consists of a base unit and two interface modules. The
interface modules are mounted in the base unit through slots in the
rear panel.
BASE UNIT
Network Processor
High performance MIPS 4Km core with built-in quality of service,
hardware accelerator engines for packet processing, voice
processing and encryption/decryption.
Ethernet Interfaces
Dual 10/100 Base-T Ethernet ports (IEEE802.3) for W N access
and/or local networking (RJ45).
The M C addresses for the two Ethernet ports are printed on the
HL950 unit label and on the package for the complete deliver-
able.
Console Port
RS232 (DB9 DTE).
Terminal emulation program should be configured for 19200 baud,
8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity.
WAN INTERFACE
SHDSL Module
Dual SHDSL connection (G.991.2) for up to 4.6 Mbps full du-
plex. 2- or 4-wire twisted pair (RJ45).
4-wire mode over a single cable is supported in connector 1.
LEGACY INTERFACES
V.35/V.36/X. 1 Interface Module
Single port V.35/V.36/X.21 n x 64 synchronous service. 60-pin
connector with different adapter cables. Transparent CES over
TM ( L1 UDT) deployment.

E1 Interface Module
Single E1 connection according to G.703. 120 ohms balanced
(RJ45) and 75 ohms unbalanced (DIN 1.0/2.3). Transparent CES
(UDT) over TM ( L1).

NOTE! Read this information before using your Ericsson Multi Ser -
ice Edge De ice HL950 for safe and efficient use.
Your Multi Service Edge Device HL950 is a highly sophisticated elec-
tronic device. To get the most out of it, be sure to read the following
text about product care, safety and efficient use.
Do not expose the product to liquid or moisture.
Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures, neither hot nor
cold.
Do not expose the product to lit candles, cigarettes, cigars, open
flames, etc.
Do not drop, throw or try to bend the product since rough treatment
could damage it.
Do not allow children to play with the equipment as it contains small
parts that could be detached and create a choking hazard.
Use only original Ericsson components and replacement parts. Fail-
ure to do so may result in performance loss, damage to the product,
fire, electric shock or injury, and will invalidate the warranty.
Treat the product with care, keep it in a clean and dust free place.
Use only a soft, damp cloth to clean the product.

LICENCE AGREEMENT
This is a legal agreement, greement, between you Licensee, the
recipient of the enclosed Software on compact disc, diskette or any
other media and any upgrades thereof, and Ericsson B, the Vendor.
By opening the sealed software package and/or using the software
you are agreeing to be bound by the terms of this greement.
Licence
The Licensee is hereby granted a non-transferable, non-exclusive,
restricted right and licence to use the software included herein, Soft-
ware. However, the Software licensed hereunder may be delivered in
an inseparable package also containing other software programs than
the Software.
You may: (a) use the enclosed Software on a single Ericsson product;
(b) make copies of the Software solely for purposes of backup. The
copyright notice must be reproduced and included on a label on any
backup copy.
You may not: subject to when applicable, the EC Council Directive of
May 14, 1991 on the legal protection of computer programs (91/
250/EEG) ("Software Directive" rticle 6) distribute copies of this Soft-
ware or its documentation to others; modify, rent, lease or grant your
rights to this Software to third paries (except in the event the Ericsson
product containing an item of Software is transfered to a third party
and provided the transferee agrees in writing to be bound by the
terms of this Licence greement; translate, reverse engineer,
decompile, disassemble or otherwise alter the Software or its docu-
mentation or disclose any information designated as confidential or
proprietary at the time of disclosure or, by nature, is confidential or
proprietary.
Term
Your licence remains effective from the date of receipt until termi-
nated. You can terminate it at any other time by destroying the Soft-
ware together with all copies of the Software in any form. Your li-
cence will also automatically terminate without notice if you fail to
comply with any term or condition of this greement. Upon any ter-
mination you must destroy all copies of the Software in any form.

Limited Warranty
Vendor warrants the media, on which the Software is provided, to be
free of defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for
ninety (90) days after the date of receipt. The Vendor's and its suppli-
ers' entire liability and your exclusive remedy under this warranty (which
is subject to you returning the Software to an certified reseller with a
copy of your receipt) will be, at Vendor's option, to replace the disc(s)/
diskette(s) or refund the purchase price for the Software and termi-
nate this greement.
Except for the above express limited warrranties, Vendor and its sup-
pliers make and you receive no warranties or conditions either ex-
press, implied, statutory or otherwise and Vendor and its suppliers
specifically disclaim any implied warranties of merchantability and
fitness for a particular purpose. Vendor does not warrant that the
Software will be uninterrupted or error free. You assume the respon-
sibility for the selection of the program and hardware to achieve your
intended results; and for the installation, use and results obtained
from the Software.
Some jurisdictions do now allow limitations on duration of an implied
warranty, so the above limitation may not apply to you.
Intended Use
The Software shall be used in accordance with the instructions and
for its intended use and purpose only. The software or part of it is not
permitted to be used in form example life support systems, nuclear
facility applications, missile technology, chemical or biologized
iindustry or of flight navigation or communication of air, ground sup-
port equipment or other similar business, if failure to perform on be-
half of the software in any way, could result in personal injury, death,
damage to tangibles or environmental damage.
Limitation of Liability
If no event shall Vendor or its suppliers be liable for any indirect or
consequential losses or damages whatsoever including loss of data,
loss of business, loss of profits, business interruption or personal
injury arising out of the use of or inability to use this Software. Vendor
and its suppliers entire liability under this greement shall be limited
to the amount actually paid by Licensee for the Software.
Governing Law
The validity, construction and performance of this greement shall
be governed by the laws of Sweden.

CE Requirement
Hereby, Ericsson B, declares that this Multi Service Edge Device
HL950, is in conformity with the essential requirements and other
relevant provisions of the R&TTE directive 1999/5/EC.
Caution
Changes or modifications to this product not authorized by the manu-
facturer could void your authority to operate the equipment and in-
validate CE approval. The appliance coupler serves as the mains
power disconnect and should be located so it is readily accessible.
Environmental Information
Maximum environmental values during use:
Temperature: 0oC to +40oC
Humidity: 5% to 85% RH, non-condensing.
Warning
This is a class product. In a domestic environment this product
may cause radio interference in which case the user may be required
to take adequate measures.
