SMLA-1 Amplifier / Attenuator Instructions
The SMLA-1 is a single channel, one way Interface box designed to be used with ETS microphones or any other line level
audio source. Its primary function is to boost the signal from ETS microphone cable lengths exceeding 2000 feet. It also
is designed to amplify (up to x11) or attenuate any line level audio signal. Note the audio output signal of the kit is “line
level” (0dbm).
SM1 Microphone Placement (if used)
Locate the SM1 microphone as close as possible to the area of interest in the space to be monitored. If a large area is to
be monitored, locate the SM1 in the middle of the room. Do not mount the microphone near air conditioning vents, light
fixtures or electrical equipment. The SM1 should be placed at least 5 feet away from the subject(s) to be monitored. The
SM1 is still useable in the range of 15-25 feet but is dependent on the level of background noise in the area.
Experimentation in the environment will determine what distances work best.
SMLA-1 location and power
If the SMLA-1 will be used in a long cable run to an ETS microphone, if possible, locate the SMLA-1somwhere in the
middle of the cable run. Note-a 120VAC power source must be available at this location to permit powering up of the
SMLA-1. If the application of the SMA-1 is to boost signals of equipment all located in the same general vicinity, no
precautions are required.
Cable Runs
As a microphone booster, Run a 22 gauge, stranded, two conductor shielded cable between the SMLA-1 interface and
the SM1 microphone and another cable of the same type between the SMLA-1 and the ETS base station or interface box
(head end). Keep both cable run distances under 1,500 feet and away from AC power sources, light fixtures and electrical
equipment. See Figure 1 for connection diagram.
Level and Gain Adjustments
As a signal repeater (booster) for an ETS microphone, place the “level” control to mid-position and adjust the “gain”
control for the desired audio level at the head end. For other line level sources: If you want the SMLA-1 to amplify an
audio signal (up to x11), turn the “level” control Full clock-wise. Then, adjust the “gain” control for the desired audio output
level. If you want the SMLA-1 to attenuate (lower) the audio signal, turn the “gain” control full counter-clock-wise and
adjust the “level” control for the desired audio. level.
Inputs / outputs
Use the 3 terminal “microphone” block to connect ETS series microphones. Connect the other three terminals to ETS
base stations or interface boxes. The RCA inputs and outputs are for connecting line level devices together or can directly
drive a DVR input with an ETS microphone. Note-do not use the RCA audio input and ETS microphone input at the same
time. Use one or the other.
