HowYourMicrowaveOven Works
The microwaveoven hasan electronictube called amagnetron that producesmicrowaves,
veryshort radiowaves. The microwavesthen pass through awave-guide and intothe oven
cavity. The microwavespenetratethe food and causewatermoleculeswithinthe food to
vibrateextremelyrapidly. Thisvibration causesconsiderablefriction orheat between the
watermoleculesresulting inarapidriseintemperature.Thistype ofheating isveryefficient
and the cooking timeisthereforeshorterthan inaconventionaloven. The rateof heating
dependson the moisturecontent, shape, volumeand amount of food present. Metallic
materialstotallyreflect microwaves. Non-metallicmaterialssuchasglass, paperand
plastics arepartiallytransparent tomicrowaves. Microwavesdo not directlyheat the oven
wallsand most cooking utensilsbecausetheydo not absorbmicrowaveenergy.
However, theyfrequentlyget verywarmthrough being indirect contact withhot food.
