DRIVING THE CAR
Nevermaintainnorexceedthe
maximumallowedspeedsanddo
notdrivewithtachometerpointer
steadilyontheyellowsector.
Donottravelsteadilyforlong
intervalsattopspeedinanygear.
Allredindicatorlightsshouldbe
outwhiledriving.
Donotcoastdownhillwiththe
clutchpedaldepressed,thetransmis-
sioninneutralortheengineoff,asthe
marginalsavinginfuelconsumption
whichmaybederivedfromsuch
practicedoesnotcompensateforthe
resultinglossinbrakelininglifeand
drivingsafetywhichisprovidedbythe
brakingeffectoftheengine.
Rememberthatuponswitchingoff
theengine,thebrakeservois
deactivatedand,therefore,braking
requiresmoreeffort.
Donotallowtheenginetolug,
particularlywhendrivingupsteep
hills,butshiftdowningoodtimeto
benefitfrommaximumenginepulling
power.
Donotridetheclutch,otherwise
slippageanddamagewillresult.
Ensurethatboththefootand
handbrakesareefficientatalltimes.
Aftera carwashapplythefoot-brake
afewtimessoastorestorefull
brakeeffectiveness.
Alwaysapplythefootbrakepro-
gressively.Rememberthatwheellock-
ing,especiallywithanunladencar,
willresultindangerousskidding.In
caseofemergencythehandbrakemay
beusedtostopthecar.
Onwetorslipperyroadshard
brakingwillincreasethelikelihoodof
wheellockingandconsequentinevi-
tablelossofhandlingcontrol.Instead,
usetheenginebrakingeffectby
engaginga gearlowerthanwould
normallyberequired.Braking,ifabso-
lutelyunavoidable,shouldbegentle
andprogressiveand,inanycase,
simultaneouswithenginebraking.
Onicyroadsdriveslowly,turn
thesteeringwheelverygently,avoid
usingthebrakes,changegearsmoothly
anddonotdrivewiththeclutch
pedaldepressed.Ifthecarstarts
skiddingreleasetheacceleratorpedal,
donotbrake,butsteersmoothlyin
thedirectionofskid;asthecarre-
gainsitscoursestraightenthewheels
andaccelerategently.
Alwaysusetirechainsorsnow
tiresbeforestartinga journeyonice
orsnowcoveredroadsandremember
thatwhilesnowchainscanbefitted
tothedrivingwheelsonly,studded
tiresshouldbefittedtoallwheels.
Whendrivinginmistorfogduring
daylightswitchontheparkingand
taillights:donotusethehighbeams.
