Kenwood wall cabinet

These instructions apply only to the cabinetry and facing material that will surround the firebox.
PLEASE SEE THE FIREPLACE MANUFACTURER’S INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS TO ENSURE THAT ALL CLEARANCE AND
INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS ARE BEING MET.

The walls and floor in the area of the installation should be clean, plumb and
level. Any major deviation should be remedied before installing the fireplace,
marble or the mantel /cabinet.
a. Is base molding already installed?
b. Where are the electrical outlets or firebox switch?
c. Is there enough distance between windows and edge of cabinet?
d. Is the fireplace centered between walls?
e. Return air vent location?
f. Is the fireplace centered between windows?
g. Where are the electrical & cable outlets positioned?
h. Is there hardwood or carpet going in?
Above is a diagram of issues that may prevent an installation of wood products around a firebox:

Assembly steps
Attach the the breast board (b) to the left leg (c) and right leg
(d) by inserting dowels and cam pin into matching holes on ends
of breastboard. Before inserting, make sure that the arrow on
the cam in the breast board points toward the edge of board.
Push the breast board until dowels are fully inserted into the
legs and there is no gap between leg and breast board. Using a
philips screwdriver, turn the cams in breastboard clock-wise
until snug. Do not rely on the cam to pull the two together. Do
not over-tighten, as too much torque can break the cam.
Screw 8 #8 1-1/2” drywall screws (m) through the breast board
to the left and right legs.
Attach marble cleats (e)(f) to the back of breast board and legs
using twelve #8 2.0” drywall screws. Attach horizontal marble
cleat (g) first, centered. Refer to fireplace manufacturer’s installa-
tion instruction to determine the minimum clearance from the
firebox to combustible material. Then attach two vertical marble
cleats (h) to legs, parallel with legs and leaving 3/4” minimum
clearance from floor. Recommended dimensions shown below.
If you are not using optional base, go to the step 6.
Install optional base. Secure the base using construction adhe-
sive or finishing nails. If using finishing nails, use a stud finder or
other method, locate at least two studs in the wall above the base.
Push the base tightly against the wall, drill 3/32” pilot holes at a
45 degree angle down through the top, as shown in above. Using
16d finish nails, nail the base to the wall. Use a nail set to set the
nail head below surface of the top.

Put the top (a) over the cabinet with the back of the top
resting on the ledger board.
Using an electric drill, predrill 1/16” holes down through the top
into the ledger board. The holes should be drilled 1/2” off of
the back edge of the top. Attach the top to the ledger board
using (2) 4D finishing nails (provided) through predrilled holes.
Use a nail set to set the nail head below surface of top, and fill
the resulting hole with an appropriate filler.
If you are not using non-combustible hearth or you are using
optional base, go to the next step.
Apply construction adhesive to bottom of hearth and install it on
the floor between cabinet the legs, pushed back against the fire-
place
Set cabinet in it’s final position, fireplace must be already
installed. The fireplace front should be 17-1/4” from the the wall
for SL-350, SL-550, SL-750 fireplaces and 20” from the wall for
ND3933, ND3630 fireplaces. Make sure that the face of the
fireplace and front surface of the marble cleats line up. Make
sure there is proper clearances around fireplace and enough
room for marble header and legs.
Using a stud finder or other method, mark off the location of the
vertical studs. Line up the top edge of ledger board with the top
edge of returns and attach ledger board to the wall using 2 #8 3”
drywall screws (h).
Make sure the fireplace is installed according to local
codes.
In order to use the optional hearth base, the bottom of the
fireplace must have been installed 9-1/4” above the finished
floor level as shown above. The fireplace should sit in recess in
the optional base with front pulled against the front part of the
top.

Caulk the cabinet to the wall all the way around, using a caulk that
matches your cabinet color. This will eliminate any remaining gap
between cabinet and wall.
YOUR INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE.

Cut scribe to
fit stone.
If the non-combustible hearth is used, cut the vertical pieces of
scribe to allow for stone height between the legs. Place the scribe
molding as shown above, positioning it so that it just contacts the
non-combustible surround. Be careful not to hit the facing mate-
rial when nailing the scribe in place.
Attach the scribe (g), making sure it is pushed back against non-
combustible facing. It is recomended to predrill 1/16” holes on
the inside scribe pieces prior to attaching them to the mantel to
avoid splitting. Nail with 4D finishing nails (provided), breast board
first. Be careful not to hit the stone as you nail the scribe in place.
Protect the stone with a piece of corrugated cardboard held or
taped between stone and hammer as you nail. Use a nail set to set
the nail head below surface of scribe, and fill the resulting hole
with an appropriate filler.
Apply four areas of high temp. adhesive (each about the size
of large grape) to each marble cleat and insert marble/granite
header in the 1” gap between breast board and backer board.
Holding marble/granite header insert the marble/granite legs in
the gap between right/left cabinet legs and marble cleat.
Carefully lower the header onto the legs. Work header and legs
into adhesive. Make sure that legs are plumb and that there is
adequate clearance to the opening of fireplace.
