These guidelines must be followed to ensure that safety mechanisms in the
design of this refrigerator will operate properly.
•The refrigerator must be plugged into its own 115 Volt, 60 Hz, AC only
electrical outlet. The power cord of the appliance is equipped with a 3-prong
grounding plug for your protection against shock hazards. It must be plugged
directly into a properly grounded 3-prong receptacle. The receptacle must be
installed in accordance with local codes and ordinances. Consult a qualified
electrician. DO NOT USE AN EXTENSION CORD OR AN ADAPTER PLUG.
• Ifvoltagevariesby10percent ormore,performanceofyourrefrigeratormaybe
affected. Operating the refrigerator with insufficient power can damage the

Before starting the refrigerator, follow these important first steps:
Location
• Choose a place that is near a grounded electrical outlet. DO NOT use an
extensioncord or anadapter plug.
• Ifpossible, place the refrigeratoroutofdirect sunlight andawayfromthe
range,dishwasher or otherheatsources.
• Therefrigerator must beinstalledon afloorthat is levelandstrong enough
tosupportafullyloadedrefrigerator.
• Considerwater supply availability formodelsequippedwith an automatic ice
maker.
Installation
• Do not install the refrigerator where the temperature will drop below 60°F
(15°C)or rise above110°F(43°C).The compressor willnotbe able tomaintain
propertemperatures.
• Allow space around the unit for good air circulation. Leave a 1 inch (25 mm)
space behind and a 3 inch (75 mm) space above the refrigerator for adequate
circulation.
• In a recessed installation, allow an extra 1/2 inch (10-15 mm) on each side
foreaseofinstallation.
• Forbestcirculation,elevatetheunit1inch(25mm) fromthefloor,especially
iftheflooriscarpeted.
Door Opening
The doors should open to allow easy access to a counter when removing food.
• Do not position the refrigerator so you have to walk around the refrigerator
doors.
• Reversethedoorsif necessary.See"ReversibleDoorInstructions."
Leveling
All four corners of refrigerator must rest firmly on a solid floor. Some models
areequippedwithadjustablescrew-typelevelers.Othersareequippedwithrollers.
Ifyourrefrigeratordidnotcomewithrollers,theycanbepurchasedfromyourdealer.
•Toadjust screw-typelevelers (some models): Tip cabinet back slightly and
raiseadjustingboltsasneeded.
•To adjust front rollers (some models): Use a screwdriver, 3/8" socket
wrench,ornutdrivertoadjustrollersasshown.
RAISETHE FRONT of cabinet enough so doors will close freely when opened halfway.

Cleaning
• Wash the inside, all removable parts and the outside with mild detergent and
warm water. Wipe dry. DO NOT USE HARSH CLEANERS ON THESE
SURFACES.
• Do not use razor blades or other sharp instruments, which can scratch the
appliance surface, when removing adhesive labels. Any glue left from the
tape or energy label can be removed with a mixture of warm water and mild
detergent,or,touch the glue with thestickysideoftapealreadyremoved.
• DO NOT REMOVE THE SERIAL PLATE.

• Locatetherefrigeratorinthecoolestpartoftheroom,outofdirectsunlightand
awayfromheatingducts orregisters.Donotplacetherefrigerator nexttoheat-
producingappliancessuchasarange,ovenordishwasher.Ifthis isnotpossible,
a section of cabinetry or an added layer of insulation between the two
applianceswillhelptherefrigeratoroperatemoreefficiently.
• Leveltherefrigeratorsothedoorsclosetightly.
• RefertothisOwner's Guide for thesuggestedrefrigeratorsettings.
• Periodiccleaningofthecondenserwillhelptherefrigeratorrunmoreefficiently.

• Do not overcrowd the refrigerator or block cold air vents. Doing so causes the
refrigeratortorunlonger and use more energy.Shelvesshouldnotbelinedwith
aluminum foil, wax paper or paper toweling. Liners interfere with cold air
circulation, making the refrigerator less efficient, which could cause food
spoilage.
• Cover foods and wipe containers dry before placing them in the refrigerator.
This cuts down on moisture build-up inside the unit.
• Organize the refrigerator to reduce door openings. Remove as many items as
needed at one time and close the door as soon as possible.

Cool Down Period
To ensure safe food storage, allow the refrigerator to operate with the doors
closed for at least 8 to 12 hours before loading with food.
Refrigerator and Freezer Controls
• Tostartout, set control dials tothemidpointforatrial period of 24 hours.
Temperatures
• After 24 hours, adjust the controls as needed. Adjust temperatures one
number at a time. For colder temperatures, turn the dial toward COLDEST.
For warmer temperatures, turn the dial toward COLD. The temperature will
increase or decrease, but not necessarily by 1, 2, or 3 degrees.
An adjustment made to one compartment may require an adjustment to the
other.
• Turning the refrigerator control will change the temperature in BOTH
compartments.If the refrigerator control is turned to OFF, cooling stops
in both compartments.
• Turning the freezer control will change only the temperature in the
freezer compartment.
To maintain temperatures, a fan circulates air in the refrigerator and freezer
compartments. For good circulation, do not block cold air ventswith food items.
Energy Saver Switch (some models)
If your refrigerator is equipped with an Energy Saver Switch, keep it set on
ENERGY SAVER for lowest energy usage.
Moisture
During humid weather, or if moisture appears on the cabinet between the doors,
set switch to REDUCE EXTERIOR MOISTURE. A heater will warm the surface and
allow moisture to evaporate.

Spillsafe glassshelves(somemodels) catchandholdaccidentalspills.Insome
models,the Spillsafe shelvesslideoutforeasyaccesstofoodandfastcleaning.
Theshelvesslideoutindependentlyofthecantileverbrackets.Justpullfrontofshelf
forward.Shelfcanbeextendedasfarasstopperwillallowand is not removable from
thecantileverbracket.
Door Storage
Doorbinsandshelvesareprovidedforconvenientstorageofjars,bottles, andcans.
Itemsusedoftenareavailableforquickselection.
Some models have adjustable door bins which can be moved to suit individual
needs.Tomovethebins,removeby lifting straight up. Place the bin in thedesired
positionandlowerover supports.
The Dairy Compartment is warmer than the general food storage section and is
intendedforshort termstorageofcheese,spreads,orbutter.
Micro-Serve Dishes (some models)
Food can be stored, cooked*, and served in Micro-Serve Dishes provided in some
models.Thesedishesslideeasilyintotheirowntray,whichhangsbelowadoorgallon
bin,convenientlyfreeingshelfspaceforotheritems. Seeillustration. *Removeplastic
lidbefore cooking. Lidisintendedfor storageonly.
Crispers
Thecrispers,locatedunderthebottomrefrigeratorshelf,aredesignedforstoring
fruits,vegetables, and otherfreshproduce.Wash items inclearwaterand remove
excesswaterbefore placinginthecrispers.Itemswithstrongodorsorhighmoisture
shouldbewrappedbeforestoring.Insomemodels,thecrispersaredrawers,inothers,
theyaretilt-outbins.

AdjustableHumidity Control
The Humidity Control (some models with Crisper drawers) allows you to adjust the
humiditywithintheCrisper.Thiscan extend thelifeoffreshvegetableswhichkeep
best in high humidity. Leafy vegetables, however, keep best when stored with the
HumidityControlseton HIGH, or in adrawerwithoutaHumidityControl.Thiskeeps
incoming air to a minimum and maintains maximum moisture content.
Deli Drawer (some models)
Some models are equipped with a Deli Drawer for storage of luncheon meats,
spreads,cheeses,and otherdeliitems.
Meat Pan (some models)
Some models are equipped with a Meat Pan that can be positioned below any
refrigeratorshelf.Usethispanforshorttermstorageofbulkmeatitems.Ifmeats
are to be kept longer than 1 or 2 days, they should be frozen.
The Chilled Air Duct can also switch sides, should you wish to move the split
cantilever shelf. To change sides:
• Remove Meat Keeper drawer and shelf. Remove screw. Grasp air duct, push
and tip back to "unlock" it from the air outlet box.
• Move air duct to the other side, and push into place. Reinstall screw.
• Replace shelf and insert drawer.
Wine Rack (some models)
Thewinerackstores bottles of wine, orsingle2-literplasticbottlesofjuiceor
soda pop. To install, slide wine rack onto the shelf with the curve facing in. To
remove, slide wine rack out. Install on either side of a Spillsafe™ shelf.
Meat Keeper (some models)
The temperature in the Meat Keeper drawer can be made colder than the rest
of the refrigerator compartment by adjusting the Chilled Air Control. Meatwill
bepartially frozen, andmaybe kept freshlongerthan if storedona refrigerator
shelf.
Before placing items in Meat Keeper, follow these steps to keep meat fresh.
1. Carefully handle meat with clean hands, and always keep compartment clean.
2. Store meat in its original wrapper. If necessary, overwrap in plastic wrap, or
foiltopreventdrying. Wrapfishtightlytopreventodortransfertootherfoods.
3.Ifspoilageever occurs, disinfect the compartmentwithliquidchlorinebleach
followinglabel directions.Then,rinsewithasolutionofbakingsoda,andwater.
Rinse with clear water, and dry.

Care and Cleaning Keepyourrefrigeratorandfreezercleantopreventodorbuild-up.Wipeupanyspills
immediately and clean both sections at least twice a year. Never use metallic
scouringpads,brushes,abrasivecleanersorstrongalkalinesolutionsonanysurface.
Do not wash any removable parts in a dishwasher.
Always unplug the power cord from the wall outlet before cleaning. Turning
thecontrol to OFFdoesnot disconnect powertothe controls, lightbulb,or other
electricalcomponents.
Inside
Washinsidesurfacesoftherefrigeratorandfreezerwithasolutionof2 tablespoons
baking soda in 1 quart warm water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Be sure to wring
excess water out of sponge or cloth before cleaning around the controls,
lightbulb, or anyelectricalparts.
Washremovable parts suchasshelvesand drawers withbakingsodasolution or mild
detergent and warm water. DO NOT USE HARSH CLEANERS ON THESE SUR-
FACES. Rinseand dry thoroughly.Cleanthedoor gaskets withmildsuds,rinse with
clearwater and wipedry.Do not userazorblades or othersharpinstruments which
canscratchtheappliancesurfacewhenremovingadhesive labels. Any glue leftfrom
the tape or energy label can be removed with a mixture of warm water and mild
detergent, or, touch the residue with the sticky side of tape already removed. DO
NOT REMOVE THE SERIAL PLATE.
Damp objects stick to cold
metal surfaces. Do not touch
refrigeratedsurfaces with wetordamp
hands.
Outside
Washthe cabinet and handleswithwarmwater and mildliquiddetergent.Rinsewell
andwipe drywitha clean softcloth.
Whenmovingtherefrigerator,pull straight out.Donotshifttherefrigeratorfrom
sidetosideasthismaytearorgouge the floor covering. If the refrigerator has an
automatic ice maker, be careful not to move the refrigerator beyond plumbing
connections.
Periodically clean the condenser (black tubes and wires on the back of the
refrigerator).Usingavacuumwith its dustingtoolattachment,vacuumthecoilsto
remove dust build-up. Do not allow lint or dust to accumulate on the coils.
Thedefrostwaterpanislocatedatthebottomrear of the refrigerator on top of the
compressor (shown left). The pan should be cleaned periodically. Wipe clean with
a damp cloth.
Replacing the Light Bulb
To replace the light bulb:
1. Unplugtherefrigerator.
2. Wearglovesasprotectionagainstpossiblebrokenglass.
3. Replace old bulb with an appliance bulb of the same wattage.
4. Remember to plug the refrigerator back in.
To avoid damage and help
therefrigerator run asefficientlyas
possible, clean the condenser
periodically.

Vacation and Moving Tips
Shortvacations: Leavetherefrigeratoroperating during vacationsof1to3weeks.
Useupallperishableitemsfromtherefrigeratorsection.Wrapandstoreotheritems
inthefreezer. If the unithasanautomaticicemaker, turn off theicemaker.
Long vacations: Remove all food and ice if you will be gone 1 month or more. Turn
thecontroltoOFFanddisconnectthepower.Iftheunithasanautomaticicemaker,
turnofftheicemakerandturnthewatersupplyvalvetotheclosedposition.Defrost
andcleantheinteriorthoroughly.Leavebothdoorsopentopreventodorandmold
buildup.Blockopenifnecessary.
Moving: When moving the refrigerator, follow these guidelines to prevent
damage:
• Remove all food and other items from refrigerator and freezer
compartments. Empty the ice storage bin. Defrost and clean the
interiorthoroughly.
• Ifahandtruckisused in moving,loadtherefrigeratorfromtheside.
• Turnfrontrollersasfarupaspossible(somemodels).Thiswillprotectthem
duringslidingormoving.
• The cabinet should be well padded and handled with care. DO NOT DROP.

Automatic Ice Maker Ifyourrefrigeratorhasanautomaticicemaker,itwillprovideacontinuoussupplyof
ice for normal use. The automatic ice maker is an optional accessory which may be
installedinmostmodelsatanytime.Callyourlocaldealerforinstallation.
After the plumbing connections have been completed, the water supply valve must
be opened. Place the ice container under the ice maker, pushing it as far back as
possible. Lower the wire signal arm to its "down" or ON position. Because of new
plumbingconnections, the firstproductionofice cubes maybediscoloredor have
an odd flavor. Throw the ice away until the cubes made are free of discoloration
andtaste. Remember,waterqualitydeterminesyouricequality. Itis
besttoconnecticemakertowater that is NOT soft. Softening chemicals can damage
icemaker. Ifice makerisconnectedtosoftwater,makesuresoftenerismaintained,
andworkingproperly.
Tostoptheicemaker, lift the wiresignalarmuntilitclicks and locks inthe"up"
orOFFposition.Theicemakerturnsoffautomaticallywhentheicecontainerisfull.
Ifyourmodelhasanadjustablefreezershelf,placetheshelfsothe wire signal arm
willhittheicewhentheicecontainerisfull.
Ice Maker Tips
1. Ice stored too long may develop an odd flavor. Empty the container and be sure
the wire signal arm is in its "down" or ON position. The ice maker will then
produce more ice.
2. Occasionallyshakethecontainer to keep ice separated.
3. Keepthewiresignalarminits"up"orOFFpositionuntilrefrigeratorisconnected
tothe water supply orwheneverwatersupply is turned off.
4. Certain sounds are normal when the ice maker is operating. They are:
Motor operation
Ice being loosened from the tray
Icebeing dropped intothecontainer
Running water
Water valve opening and closing

5. Wash ice container in warm water with mild detergent. Rinse well and dry.
6. Stopthe icemakerwhen cleaning thefreezer or forshortvacations.
7. Iftheicemaker willbeturnedoffforalong periodoftime,turnthewatersupply
valvetotheclosedposition.

thehingeholesinthecentermullionand
top of cabinet and reinstall in the
oppositesetofholes.
Yourrefrigeratorisequippedwithconvertibledoorhinges.Hingingof the door can
be changed to the opposite side any time you wish. An envelope containing extra
plasticholeplugsisincludedinsomemodels.TurntherefrigeratorcontroltoOFF.
Remove all food, bottles, and other items from the door. Beginwith freezerdoor.
Completely remove one door before beginning the other.
Reversible Door
Instructions
1.RefertotheInstructionSheet,packed
with the Toe Grille, to remove the Toe
Grille (some models). Snap off hinge
cover at top of cabinet (some models).
With the freezer door closed, remove
the two screws attaching upper hinge to
cabinet. Lift the hinge up and off. Be
sure to save screws and hinge for
reassembly later.

8. Trim Removal (Full-Length Trim models only)
Insomemodels,therefrigerator door has a fulllength trim
piece which continues from the bottom of the handle to the
bottom of the door. The top of the trim attaches to the
handlebracket.Anadhesive"trimlock"ispositionedabout
half-way down. The bottom of the trim is held in place by
eitheran adhesive trimlock,ora trim lock withtwoprongs
insertedintoa hole on thefaceofthedoor. Remove the trim
by gently pulling the trim lock areas out and away from the
door. When the trim is free from the door, slide the trim
straight down and away from the handle bracket.
For models with short handle trim, remove by sliding the
trim straight down and off of handle bracket.
To remove handles: Remove the three screws attaching
thehandle to the refrigeratordoor.Carefullyremove hole
plugs from corresponding holes on opposite side of doors
andreattach handle.
Toreattachtrim: Slidebothtrim locks outoftrim. Insert
the new adhesive trim locks contained in your literature
pack. NOTE: Trim lock must be removed and installed by
sliding OVER the two donut shaped areas. Install trim to
handlebyslidingupover bottom of handle. Carefullyalign
trim and press down at trim lock locations. Replace hole
plug on opposite side. Use rubbing alcohol to remove any
adhesiveresiduefromoldtrimlocklocation(s).
Formodelswithshorthandletrim, slidethetrimstraightup
ontohandlebracket.
7. Magnetic Nameplate (some models)
Reverse handles while doors are off. Remove the two screws
attaching the handle to the bottom of the freezer door. Remove
shorttrimpiecebyslidingthetrimstraight up and off of handle
bracket. Remove the screw attaching the top of the handle to
door, and reinstall on other side, using the same holes as the
nameplate. To move nameplate to other side, remove the
magnetic nameplate from its frame, turn frame upside down
andinstall in oldhandleholes.Insert magnetic nameplateinto
frame. Reattach handle to bottom of door. Slide the trim piece
straight down onto handle bracket.
Self-adhesive Nameplate (some models)
Reverse handles while doors are off. Remove the two screws
attaching the handle to the bottom of the freezer door. Remove
shorttrimpiecebyslidingthetrimstraight up and off of handle
bracket. Remove the screw attaching the top of the handle to
door,and reinstall on other side, using the holes found behind
