Kamado History
Kamado, (pronounced Kah-mah'-dough), in Japanese loosely translates to oven, smoker, or stove,
even a fireplace. There is no true translation in English. No matter the language, you will find it does
all of these things as well as baking, babrbecuing, smoking, roasting, and just about any other methods
of cooking for any kinds of food. Prior to the modern conveniences we have today, this was the go to
method for cooking/barbecuing. It is still a major appliance in this modern day, just more of a well
kept secret. The only limits for your Kamado Rocket is your imagination!
The Kamado Rocket Choice
The Kamado Rocket combines the traditional kamado style with the best quality materials to bring
you the hands down best cooking experience on the market. From the first time you see it, the hand laid
tile on the exterior draws you in for a closer look. Every piece of metal from the interior parts to the
hardware on the outside is made from U.S. made 304 stainless steel for a low maintenance and trouble
free experience. Our industry first gas burner system allows you to rapidly start your charcoal to
minimize start up and will actually get hot enough to cook with as well with either propane or natural
gas.. The shell is made from a top of the line, thermodynamic material that speeds up the cooking time
almost in half in certain instances while keeping food moist and juicy.
Kamado Rocket Exploded View
Initial Set Up And Heat Cycle
Your Kamado Rocket comes pre-assembled when brand new. However some things may have moved
around during shipping so you may want to open it up and make sure everything is in its proper place.
The thermostat does not come installed. To install it, just simply remove it from the small box, locate
the hole in the front of the lid, and slide it in. The hole is generally hidden in a grout line in the tile,
(between the tiles).
The charcoal grate should be set in the recessed lip of the fire box before adding charcoal. The main
cooking grate should also be set in place at the top recessed lip of the base.
Your Kamado Rocket requires an initial heat cycle to properly break in. You will need to bring the
temperature up to approximately 225F for one hour. When you have done this, let the Kamado Rocket
naturally cool down on its own. What this does is let the excessive water, (from the manufacturing
process), sweat off or escape from the shell. If the lid is opened, you will see moisture build up and is
what is expected to happen from this procedure. After done, you will never have to do it again. If this
procedure is not performed, damage can occur and will result in a void of the warranty.

Maintenance and Safety
–When moving or transporting your Kamado Rocket, never use the hinge/bands for a lifting
point.
–Your Kamado Rocket should only be used in an outdoor environment that is free from hanging
tree limbs or any other flammable objects.
–Frequently check the band set for proper tension to keep the lid stays securely in place.
–After securing your Kamado Rocket in the fully sealed position, (damper top closed, draft door
closed, and lid closed,) the charcoal will be suffocated by lack of oxygen and will go out allowing you
to use it on your next cook. It is very important to prevent a flashback that the lid not be opened
without properly venting first. To properly vent, open both the damper and the draft door 1/2”
for a minimum of two minutes before lifting the lid.
–When using charcoal for fuel, your Kamado Rocket will produce very little ash, (especially
when using lump charcoal as it produces even less ash,) so you will need to remove the ash as starts to
build. If the excessive ash is allowed to accumulate, it will impede the airflow and could possibly
suffocate the charcoal.
–The body is unlike that of a metal counterpart, it will not scald the skin if it briefly touched. As
with any hot item, caution should be taken to prevent personal injury.
–The Kamado Rocket is self cleaning by simply heating to approx 500F to burn off any food . If
need be, a brush may be used to clean the cooking grids. For the outside, simply wipe down with a
damp cloth.
–Make sure to keep the stainless steal rod on the damper top lubricated as stainless on stainless
hardware will cause galling/chaffing and make it more difficult to rotate or open and close the damper
top. Your damper top, when brand new, comes lubricated with a food safe anti-seize that is good to
950F. If you cannot find it orwould like to use something else, some of our customers have suggested
using olive oil. Olive oil will work, but require you to apply more often. Both materials only require a
thin sheen, or small amount when done correctly.
–Never use starting fluid! Lighter fluid will be absorbed into the shell of your Kamado Rocket
and will void the warranty. It will also leave an undesired flavor in the food for a long period of time.
–When using the gas option, ALWAYS light with the lid in the open position and make sure
to provide adequate air for the amount of gas being burned. Failure to do so, will result in
suffocating the flame and could cause a flashback.

SAFETYAND WARNING TIPS
Always know where you’re shut off is located.
Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any
other appliance.
Never use this indoors.
Do not store an LP tank not connected for use in the vicinity of this or any other
appliance.
Make sure your Kamado Rocket is placed in well vented area.
Never fill the tank (cylinder) beyond 80% full.
Never try to move or touch inside the burner assembly when it’s hot. The parts become very
hot and can cause burns.
Turn valve key off and wait for components to cool before you touch or clean.
Turn off gas supply after each use when using an LP tank.
Before Lighting Your Gas Burner in your Kamado Rocket -
Always check your burner assembly to make sure there are no clogged parts
Make sure you don’t smell gas before lighting
Make sure you are in a well ventilated area and that the Kamado Rocket is not any closer than
24” to any combustible materials
Never lean over, look directly into the burner assembly or stand next to the access door
when lighting
Make sure the lid is in the full open position
Propane (LP): Before you proceed any further, here are some safety tips. As with all energy products,
gas, electric or any type of fuel you should know what it is and understand how to safely use it.
Propane is a liquid stored under pressure in tanks. It is a high pressure fuel and is heavier than
air and will sink to the bottom. It is critical that the burner be installed with the holes facing up when
using propane.
Propane leaves the tank and is dispensed through a pressure regulator to your burner. Always
make sure a regulator is on your hose between the LP tank and Kamado Rocket.
Never use a damaged or rusty propane tank.
Check for leaks after every LP refill. You can do this with the sniff test, bubble test, or purchase
a propane gas detector.
A strong gas smell or the hissing sound of gas indicates a serious problem with your burner or
LP gas tank. Failure to locate the leak could result in a fire or explosion.
The LP tank manufacture is responsible for the materials, workmanship and performance of the
tank. If the tank has a defect, malfunctions, or you have a question regarding the tank, call the tank
manufacturer’s customer service center. The number is on the warning decal which is permanently
attached to the tank.

All new LP cylinders may contain water, air, or other contaminates. It is critical that these
substances be released before filling the cylinder and placing into service. Water vapor present in the
gas vapor may cause the regulator to freeze up and cause an interruption to the gas flow. This
interruption will cause the appliance to shut down. To prevent this from occurring, it is essential that a
qualified technician always purge a new tank before placing into service.
TO USE NATURAL GAS
MAKE YOURSELF AWARE OF LOCAL CODES. IN THE ABSENSE OF LOCAL CODES,
FOLLOW SECTIONS OF THE UNIFORM PLUMING CODES. THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY .
An easily accessible shut –off valve is a must before you install your Kamado Rocket.
Do not attempt to turn off the main meter valve yourself, you could damage the meter. It
belongs to your gas company.
Regulators are rarely used in natural gas hooks –ups, but check with your local gas company in
your area.
Lighting The Burner
Once you are sure that all connections are free from leaks, you may now proceed with lighting the
burner in your Kamado Rocket. Start off by opening the damper a few turns, and then opening the lid
as well to its full open position. Simply use the supplied lighter through the draft door opening with
your left hand so that the flame is just above an orifice in the burner while slowly turning the key valve
with your right, (approximately 1/3 turn from the closed position in the counterclockwise direction).
Once lit, reinstall the draft door and adjust the flame height using the key valve. Once finished, turn the
key valve in the clockwise direction and the flame from the burner will go out.
WARNING! When using the gas burner, adequate air supply is needed. You will need to open the
damper much further if running a hot/high flame. If you see that the temperature has become
stuck at a low temp,(i.e.300F and will not climb when trying for a higher temperature,) more
than likely you have suffocated the flame and will have excessive gas build up inside the Kamado
Rocket. It is important at this time that you turn the gas off immediately and do not open the lid
for at least 3-5 minutes to allow the gas to dissipate/clear out. Opening the lid with excessive gas
build up will cause a flashback and can cause harm/injury or death.
Warning
A strong gas smell or hissing sound of gas indicates a serious problem with our gas connections.
Check for leaks after gas hook up. You can do this with the sniff test, bubble test, or buy purchasing a
gas detector. Failure to immediately follow the steps above could result in a fire or explosion that could
cause serious bodily injury, death, or property damage.
Natural Gas Connection
Ensure the existing shut off valve is closed. Remove cap off the existing shut off valve. Make proper
connections from preexisting gas line. Turn the existing shut off valve counterclockwise to open.
Leave the valve at the Kamado Rocket OFF. Check all fittings for leaks using a soap and water solution.

The installation of this appliance must conform with local codes, or in the absence of local codes, to
the national fuel gas code ANSI Z223. 1a-1998. Installation in Canada must be in accordance with the
standard CAN/CGA-B149.2 propane installation code.
Checking For Gas Leaks
TURN ON THE GAS
On Natural Gas Systems, turn the main feed valve to the unit
On LPSystems, turn the cylinder valve knob counter clockwise one turn to open.
Apply the leak-testing solution by spraying it on joints of the gas delivery system.
Blowing bubbles in the soap solution indicates that a leak is present.

NEVER USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR LEAKS

Charcoal
Charcoal comes in two different forms when used for cooking: lump charcoal and briquettes. Lump
charcoal has more of a natural look and varies in size. Briquettes are generally uniform is size and
shape throughout the bag.
The preferred charcoal of choice is lump charcoal as it has a few advantages. Lump charcoal produces
less ash which in turn increases time between ash clean out in the bottom of your Kamado Rocket.
Lump charcoal will also burn hotter and faster depending on the rate in which you allow it. Once the
lump charcoal is charred, almost all of the impurities like tars, etc. are passed off through vapor
leaving the end result of a clean carbon lump charcoal.
Briquettes are made up of compressed ground charcoal that have been further charred. Sometimes they
will also have additional additives to change the burn properties like flavors, and lighting enhancers to
speed up the lighting process.
Lighting Your Charcoal
Never use starter fluid! Not only will the starting fluid be absorbed in to shell of your Kamado Rocket
and ruin the flavoring of your food, it will void your warranty. There are many ways to get your
charcoal lit including the use of the built in burner on the medium, large, and extra large models,
(please see the lighting instructions in the gas burner section of this manual). Some of the other
methods to light the charcoal that may be used include fire starter blocks, electric charcoal starters,
propane/map gas torches, and chimney starters, etc.
Fire It Up!
–If using only the gas burner, please skip to closing the lid and continue.
–Remove ash and debris if needed. Stir existing charcoal from the last cook to get the ash to drop
to the bottom of the Kamado Rocket. If need be, remove the ash from the bottom to prevent restricting
the airflow.
–Determine how much charcoal you will need for your cook. For obvious reason, the shorter the
cook, or smaller amount of food to be prepared will require less charcoal. If you are doing a long, or
“low and slow”, you will need more charcoal. It is ok if you had a little more than needed, as you can
always control the burn rate as well as the temperature by adjusting the airflow via the draft door and
damper top.
–Open the damper top, the draft door, as well as the lid to allow for adequate airflow when first
starting your grill.
–Light the charcoal using the previously discussed instructions in the charcoal section.
–Once the charcoal is started, close the lid and make sure the damper and draft door are properly
open for airflow.
–Watch the temperature. When getting close to the desired temperature, start making adjustments
to the damper top and the draft door to control/maintain the temperature. By closing both, or restricting
airflow, the coals will burn at a lower temperature. The further you open them, you will increase
airflow as well as temperature.

–When done with your cook, simply close the damper top, draft door, and the lid. In doing so,
you will suffocate the charcoal and cause it to go out. This will allow you to use the remaining charcoal
on your next cook. Warning! It is very important to prevent a flashback that the lid not be opened
without properly venting first. A flashback is caused when the burning coal is deprived of oxygen
and then fresh oxygen is rapidly introduced. To properly vent, open both the damper and the
draft door 1/2” for a minimum of two minutes before lifting the lid.
FrequentlyAsked Questions
How do I get all the coal evenly lit?
There is no need. It is different than fall back method of “let it turn gray.” You will just need to adjust
the draft door and damper to bring your Kamado Rocket to the desired temperature once the coal is lit.
How long should I wait for the coal after reaching desired temp to cook?
There are many variables in play that include the type of charcoal being used, the ambient air
temperature, and of course the amount of food being cooked. Generally, once you have reached the
desired temperature in your Kamado Rocket, it will stabilize and maintain. In most cases, you shoul be
ready to cook within minutes of reaching your desired temperature.
What do I do with the coal when I am done cooking?
Your Kamado Rocket is designed to be as economical as possible, so by just closing the draft door,
damper top, and the lid, you will suffocate the coal and cause it to go out. This allows you to use the
unburnt coal on your next cook. Be aware, your Kamado Rocket will take up to a few hours to
completely cool down. Warning! It is very important to prevent a flashback that the lid not be
opened without properly venting first. A flashback is caused when the burning coal is deprived of
oxygen and then fresh oxygen is rapidly introduced. To properly vent, open both the damper and
the draft door 1/2” for a minimum of two minutes before lifting the lid.
How do I reduce the temperature?
To quickly reduce the temperature, you can simply open the lid for a brief moment, otherwise you will
need to reduce the airflow by closing up the damper top and draft door until desired temperature is
achieved.
How come a rotisserie is not offered as a an option?
A rotisserie is not needed in your Kamado Rocket. Due to the thermodynamic nature of the Kamado
Rocket, the heat is distributed evenly resulting in an evenly cooked food. Most of the time, especially
with larger cuts of meat, foods do not even need to be turned.
Can I bake in my Kamado Rocket?
Absolutely! In fact, you may never bake in your kitchen again after tasting how moist baked goods
finish up. To do a pizza, just use a pizza stone for best results.
Can I use my Kamado Rocket as a smoker?
Yes, you will need to adjust the temperature to where you need, usually around 150-250F. If additional
flavor is wanted, add a small amount of your favorite wood chips.

What is a drip pan for?
A drip pan is used especially when cooking large portions of meat to prevent flame ups. Flame ups are
caused when drippings fall on the charcoal.
Can I cook different foods at the same time?
By all means. As long as you have room, you should have no problem cooking an entire meal at one
time.
Can I cook with the lid open?
Yes, you could if you really choose to, but you will lose all the cooking benefits of your Kamado
Rocket and end up with food that turns out dry.
Can I use starting/lighting fluid?
NO! You should never use either as it will be absorbed in to the body of your Kamado Rocket and have
a drastic effect on the taste of the food being cooked on your Kamado Rocket.
Do I need to clean the inside of my Kamado Rocket?
The only things that needs attention would be the cooking grates if they become soiled from previous
cooks or ash removal when needed.
My Kamado Rocket as tiny hairline cracks, what do I do?
They are perfectly normal and will have no effect on your Kamado Rocket performance. If large
chunks of the shell start to break off or come loose, contact Galaxy Outdoor immediately.
What is the purpose of the high temp gaskets?
The high temp gaskets help lock in the moisture on your food, retain heat, and allow the charcoal to be
suffocated and reused for the next cook.
Is it safe to use my Kamado Rocket in any weather?
That is what makes you Kamado Rocket so nice.... Once it is brought up to the desired temperature, the
Kamado Rocket is not adversely effected by ambient temperature like a stamped steel shell counterpart
would be.
Can I leave my Kamado Rocket outside in the rain and snow?
Yes, your Kamado Rocket was built to withstand the elements. However, the use of a Kamado Rocket
cover makes things a bit easier to maintain.
