HEART RATE ZONE CALCULATIONS
IMPORTANT: Training with a heart rate monitor (HRM) can help ensure that you don‘t train
too hard or take it too easy. Depending on the training session, your target HR will be anywhere
from 60% - 95% of your maximum heart rate (MHR).
The traditional way to calculate MHR is to use this formula: 220 minus age for men, or 226
minus age for women. For example. if you are a man of 40 then your estimated MHR is 180.

1 BASIC SETUP
With Garmin EDGE®it’s no longer just about the ride, it’s about the progress that you’re making. You
can’t beat that feeling of knowing that you’re improving and making it up a climb quicker than before.
The EDGE®will become a part of your bike that you won’t be able to live without.
Getting Started
When using your device the first time, you should complete these tasks to set up the device and learn
about the basic features. Each of the steps below will be explain in the booklet.
1. Charge the device
2. Install your device using the standard mount or the out-front mount
3. Turn on the device
4. Locate satellites
5. Go for a ride
6. Upload your ride to Garmin Connect
CHARGE THE DEVICE
1. Pull up the weather cap 1 from the mini USB port 2 .
2. Plug the small end of the USB cable into the mini-USB port.
3. Plug the other USB end into the AC adapter (plugged into
a standard wall outlet) or a computer USB port.
4. Charge the device completely.

INSTALL THE DEVICE
Standard Mount
1. Select a secure location to mount the EDGE®where it does not
interfere with the safe operation of your bike.
2. Place the rubber disk 1 on the back of the bike mount. The
rubber tabs align with the back of the bike mount so it stays in
place.
3. Place the bike mount on the bike stem.
4. Attach the bike mount securely using the two bands 2 .
5. Align the tabs on the back of the EDGE®with the bike mount
notches 3 .
6. Press down slightly and turn the EDGE®clockwise until it locks
into place.
Out-front Mount
1. Select a secure location to mount the EDGE®device where it
does not interfere with the safe operation of your bike.
2. Use the hex key to remove the screw 1 from the handlebar
connector 2 .
3. If necessary, remove the two screws on the back side of the
mount 3 , rotate the connector 4 , and replace the screws to
change the orientation of the mount.
4. Place the rubber pad around the handlebar:
– If the handlebar diameter is 25.4 mm, use the thicker pad.
– If the handlebar diameter is 31.8 mm, use the thinner pad.
5. Place the handlebar connector around the rubber pad.
6. Replace and tighten the screw.
7. Align the tabs on the back of the EDGE®device with the bike
mount notches 5 .
8. Press down slightly and turn the EDGE®device clockwise until it
locks into place.
Releasing the EDGE
1. Turn the EDGE®clockwise to unlock the device.
2. Lift the EDGE®off the mount.
TIP: For the best GPS reception, position the bike mount so the front of the EDGE®is oriented
toward the sky. You can install the bike mount on the stem or the handlebars.
NOTE: Garmin®
recommends a torque
specification of 7 lbf-in.
(0.8 N-m). You should
check the tightness of the
screw periodically.

CADENCE AND SPEED SENSORS (OPTIONAL)
About the Speed and Cadence Sensors
Cadence data from the cadence sensor is always recorded. If speed
and cadence sensors are paired with the device, you do not need any
more GPS data to calculate the speed and distance.

Installing the Speed Sensor
1. Place and hold the speed sensor on top of the wheel hub.
2. Pull the strap 1 around the wheel hub, and attach it to the
hook 2 on the sensor. The sensor may be tilted when installed
on an asymmetrical hub. This does not affect operation.
3. Rotate the wheel to check for clearance. The sensor should not
contact other parts of your bike.
TIP: Garmin recommends you secure your bike on a stand
while installing the sensor.
NOTE: The LED flashes green for five seconds to indicate
activity after two revolutions.
HEART RATE MONITOR (OPTIONAL)
Your Heart Rate Monitor helps you evaluate your activities, see your
progress and plan your future workouts.
If you received a HRM with your device:
1. Attach the heart rate module to the strap.
2. Wet the contact path 2 and the electrodes 3 on the back of
the strap.
3. Wrap the strap around your chest and connect the strap hook 4
to the loop 5 .
4. Bring the device within 3m of the HRM. After you put on the
HRM, it is active and will send data automatically. If the HRM is
not recognized you can pair it from the settings menu.

Installing the Cadence Sensor
Cadence is your rate of pedaling or “spinning” measured by the
number of revolutions of the crank arm per minute (rpm).
1. Select the band size that fits your crank arm 1 securely. The
band you select should be the smallest one that stretches across
the crank arm.
2. On the non-drive side, place and hold the flat side of the cadence
sensor on the inside of the crank arm.
3. Pull the bands 2 around the crank arm, and attach them to the
hooks 3 on the sensor.
4. Rotate the crank arm to check for clearance. The sensor and
bands should not contact any part of your bike or shoe.
5. Take a 15 minute test ride and inspect the sensor and bands to
ensure there is no evidence of damage.

BLUETOOTH SETTINGS (OPTIONAL)
The EDGE®device has Bluetooth connected features for your compatible smartphone or fitness device
(excluding Edge Touring). Some features require you to install Garmin Connect Mobile on your smart-
phone (for more information, see chapter 2, p. 11). Based on your EDGE®model, Bluetooth connection
allows you to use following features: LiveTrack, Weather updates, Smart notifications, device to device
transfers and any Garmin Connect Mobile’s feature.

1. To sign up for a free Garmin Connect account,
go to www.garminconnect.com/start
2. Once you complete and save an activity on your
device, you can upload it to Garmin Connect by
connecting your device through your PC / Mac and
Garmin Express. (See chapter 2.2).

Garmin Connect
Garmin Connect is a web application designed for indoor and outdoor athletes to track, improve and
share their performance and to discover new courses. Garmin Connect displays all of your recorded data
within a set of flexible dashboards allowing you to analyze the data in a basic or more advanced way. It
also allows you to plan your future workouts according to personal or specific goals.
Garmin Express
Garmin Express is our desktop tool that helps you manage your
Garmin devices.
– Register your devices
– Update your maps and device software
– Upload activities to Garmin Connect
– Manage your device settings
If your device is not displayed / detected
1. Download from
www.garmin.com/express
Follow the instructions to install
Garmin Express on your PC / Mac.
2. Once Garmin Express is
installed, connect your new
device to your computer and
open Garmin Express.
It will automatically detect your
device. If your device is not de-
tected, click on menu and select
Add a new device.
3. Select Continue. Then follow
the instructions on Garmin Express.

Garmin Connect Mobile
Garmin Connect Mobile is a free application for Android and iOS devices which gives you
access to all of your Garmin Connect data at your fingertips – anytime, anywhere. When
used with compatible Garmin devices, you can share your activities as they happen, wire-
lessly upload activities and much more!
Garmin Connect Mobile is compatible with a range of devices which support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
A list of BLE compatible devices can be found here: www.garmin.com/ble
1. On your mobile phone, go to the Google Play or
iTunes / App Store.
2. Search for Garmin Connect.
3. Once you find Garmin Connect Mobile, click
Free then Install.

TO CALIBRATE THE ELEVATION MANUALLY

Calibrate Barometer
The EDGE®Touring Plus, 1000, 810, 800 and 510 calculate elevation data using a barometric altimeter.
Once the device is properly calibrated, the standard area of accuracy will be +/- 10 feet. To ensure that
elevation data is accurate at the beginning of an activity, calibrate the elevation manually.

Locate Satellites
Before you can use the GPS tracking and navigation features, you must acquire satellite signals. The
device may need a clear view of the sky to acquire satellite signals when you start your ride. The time and
date are set automatically based on GPS position.
Go for a Ride
Before you can record speed and distance, you must locate satellite signals or pair your device with an
optional ANT+ speed sensor. The example below displays EDGE®1000 screenshots, which are also
available for the other devices.
NOTE: History is recorded only while the
timer is running.

Planning and Riding a Route on the EDGE®(available on EDGE®1000, EDGE®
810 and EDGE®Touring)
You can create and ride a custom route. A route is a sequence of waypoints or locations that leads you to
your final destination.
