Garmin
Start Up
Press and hold “Power” button on
right hand side of GPS
Wait for GPS to track satellites
To find current location be in a
clear area (Note: *location and
satellites will be difficult to find if
indoors*)
Press “ page” to switch between
map, pointer, trip computer, and
menu screens
*you do not need to wait for the GPS
to track satellites to access these
functions*
Mark a Way Point
A waypoint marks a single specific
location. (e.g. school, trail junction,
sampling location). We mark waypoints
so that we can map that specific
location visit it again or view its
geographic coordinates.
Press “page” until you reach the
menu screen (Figure 1)
“Mark” will be highlighted; press
“enter”

GPS will ask if current location is
“ok to mark”, if yes, press “enter”
The screen will then go back to
the “menu” screen
How to Rename a Waypoint
If you want to return to a specific
location you have marked, you can look
up the waypoint and the GPS will show
you how to get there from your current
location.
Press “page” until you reach the
menu screen
Press down arrow key once so
that “waypoints” is highlighted
(Figure 2)

Press “enter”
Use arrow keys to scroll to which
way point you would like to look
at; press “enter”
“Go to” will be highlighted; press
“enter” to view waypoint, you
will be taken to a screen that will
guide you to your waypoint

Change NAD
NAD stands for North American Datum.
A datum is used for mapping the earth
with reference points for various
coordinates. There are different maps
depending on what your location is and
it is important to have your GPS set to
the appropriate Datum. (Map)
Press “page” until you get to the
menu screen
Scroll down with arrow keys until
“set up” is highlighted; press
“enter”
scroll down with arrow keys until
“units” is highlighted; press
“enter”
Press down key until line below
“Map Datum” is highlighted;
press “enter”
Scroll using arrow keys until
appropriate datum is
highlighted. (Note: In Canada
there are three most common
datum’s: WGS 84, NAD 83 and
NAD 27. NAD 27 is often used
because maps in the Arctic are
older)
“NAD27 Canada” appears; press
“enter”
Press “page” to return to menu
screen
Mark a Track
A track is used to mark a route you
have travelled; so that you can take the
same way again. It is different from
marking a single point.
Press “page” till menu screen
Scroll down with arrow keys until
“tracks” is highlighted; press
“enter”
Scroll up to “setup”; press “enter”

Ensure recording is on
Press “page” to return to prior
screen. Scroll down to “save”;
press “enter”
Confirm you want to save track,
press “enter” (Figure 5)

To Find or Retrieve a Track
Press “page” until menu screen
appears
Scroll down to “tracks”; press
“enter”
Scroll down to which track you
would like to look up; press
“enter”
To track back from end point,
scroll down until “track back” is
highlighted; press “enter”
Press either “to begin” or “ to
end” to set track
Downloading your Waypoints
To download your waypoints onto a
computer; or to create routes and
waypoints on your computer to
download to the GPS, you must
purchase a PC Interface Cable. (RS232
Serial Port Connector) This cable can be
bought on the Garmin website. The
cable plugs into the back under the
rubber flap. For more detailed
