BATTERY INSTALLATION
1. Openhingedbatterycompartmentdoorbypressingdownat
arrow,slidingitasindicatedand lifting itup.
NOTE: Toavoiddamagetothebattery door, donotattempt
toforcedoorbeyonditsnormalstopping point.
2. Insert2 "AA"-sizealkalinebatteries(notincluded) into bat-
terycompartment. Be surethe(-t-)orcapendof each battery
is installedasshownonthebatterydiagram.
3. Closethebattery door.
To save onbatteries,usetheoptionalRechargeable Battery
Pack, No.5-1753.(Seepage7.)
NOTE: Iftherecordingsoundsdistorted,orifthetapemoves
very slowlyornotatall,checkthebatteries.Try AC
powerora freshset ofbatteriesbeforeseekingservice
(See Rec/Batt Light,page6).
Please note,if unit isinAVRmodeforrecordingpur-
poses, tapeoperationwillnotstart until a soundac-
tivatesthefunction.
IMPORTANT:Besuretoremovethebatterieswhenstoringthe
unit formorethana fewweeksata time. Leaky batteriescan
badlydamagetherecorder.Disposeof"dead"batteriesinthe
propermannerinaccordance with stateandlocalregulations.
AC POWER CONVERTER (INCLUDED)
To save batteries,youcanusetheACPowerConverterto
operateyourrecorder.
The ACPowerConvertercordplugs into the3V DC Jack onthe
recorderandtheConverterplugs into AChousehold outlet.
WhentheACConverteris used, batteriesareautomatically
disconnected.

3. Insert cassette into CASSETTE CARRY DOOR with sideto
beusedvisible through cassette doorwindowandthenclose
door.
NOTE: Rimdriveandcapstandrivetapeslook alike, buton-
ly CAPSTAN DRIVE MICROCASSETTE tapeswill
work(fit)inthisrecorder.
Always push STOP/EJECT button beforestoring. This will
relieve pressureoncertainpartsintherecorderthat might
deformafterlongperiodsoftime.

VOLUME CONTROL
When in PLAY mode,adjustvolumecontroltoyourpreferred
listening level.
When in RECORD mode,the VOLUME controlisusedtofine
tunethesensitivityofthe built-in (or external) microphoneforre-
cordoperations.
AUTOMATIC VOICE
ACTIVATED RECORDING (AVR)
This recorder has an AVR featurewhichallowsitto sense sound
and torecordonlywhenyouarespeaking into themicrophone.
When dictationstopsforapproximately3 seconds, tapeopera-
tion willstop.Operationwillstartagainwhenyouresumeyour
dictation.
AUTOMATIC VOICE
ACTIVATED RECORDING (AVR)SWITCH
ONPosition— A tape saver. Idealfeaturetoallowforhands-
free operationduringdictation.When unit isin RECORD mode,
itwillrecordonlywhenyouarespeaking into themicrophone.
OFF Position — TheAVR circuitisdisconnectedandrecording
is continuouswhen unit isin RECORD mode.
MICSENSITIVITYSWITCH
This two-positionswitchenablesselectiontetweentwomicro-
phonesensitivity levels...
•HIformaximumsensitivityforconferencesorgeneraluse,
and,
•LOfora lowersensitivitylevelfordictationpurposes.
TO RECORD WITH AVR FEATURE
1. Place AVRswitchin"ON"position.
2. Press RECORD button (PLAY button will depress simultane-
ously). Ifthe RECORD button willnotdepress,see
"PREVENTING ACCIDENTAL ERASURE" page7.
3. Select HIorLO with theMIC SENSITIVITY switch.
4. Adjust VOLUME controlsothatthesensitivityoftheMIC
(built-in or external) isatthe point whereyourvoicelevelwill
justactivatethe AVR circuitryandautomaticallystartrecord
operation.
NOTE: Thefirstsyllableortwomaybelostwhenyoustart
recording since this"sound"is used to turn AVR "on".It is a
good practice,therefore,tomakesomesoundor say ashort
wordtoactivate AVR beforeyoubeginactualdictation.
Variations invoicelevelduringrecordoperationwillnot
cause the unit tostoprecording.Unitwillautomaticallystop
recordingwhenyou cease talkingfora periodofapprox-
imately3 seconds.
5. Whenyoufinishrecording,push STOP/EJECT button.

CONTINUOUS RECORDING
Records continuouslywhile unit isin RECORD mode.
1. Place AVRswitchin"OFF"position.
2. Depressthe RECORD button (PLAY button willautomatically
depress). Youarenowrecording.(Ifthe RECORD button will
notdepress,see "PREVENTING ACCIDENTAL
ERASURE".)
3. SelectHIorLO with theMicSensitivitySwitch.
(a) LO- fordictation.
(b) HI- forconferencerecordings.
Recording levelmaytiefinetuned with theVolumeControl.
4. Speaknormally into themicrophone (built-in orexternal).To
obtain optimum recordingquality,placetherecorder(orex-
ternalmic) with themicrophonefreelyexposedtosound
source andascloseasconvenient.
NOTE: A built-in automaticrecordlevelcontrol (ALC) willset
recordlevelfor optimum recordings.
5. Whenyoufinishrecording,push STOP/EJECT button.
PAUSE CONTROL
This convenient Pause featureismosthelpfulwhilerecording
(eitherAVRorContinuous)becauseyoucanstoptherecorder
momentarily without resettingthecontrolbuttons.Slideswitchto
PAUSE tostopoperationin PLAY, RECORD, FAST FORWARD
or REWIND modes;slide PAUSE switchto PLAY positionto
resume operation.
EXTERNAL MICROPHONE RECORDING
To record with optionalexternalmicrophone(No.5-1053)plug
themicrophone into theMIC JACK and follow theAVRor Con-
tinuousRecordinginstructions.
Whenoptionalmicrophoneis used, the built-in microphoneis
automaticallydisconnected.
TAPE SPEED CONTROL
NORM positionisthetapespeedwhichiscompatible with most
othersinglespeedmicrocassetterecorders.Whenlongerrecor-
dingsaredesired,useVi speedposition.

V2speeddoublestherecordtimeandwillallowupto2 hoursof
recordingtimewhenusing both sidesofa 60MIN(MC-60)
microcassette tape.
Donotchangespeedwhilerecording.

TAPEPLAY
Tolistentoyourrecordedmicrocassette,rewindtothestarting
pointanddepressSTOP/EJECTbutton.PushthePLAYbutton
andadjustVOLUMEtodesiredlisteninglevel.
NOTE: Tapesmustbeplayedbackatthesamespeedinwhich

REWIND(REW)
DepressREWtorunthetapebacktothetseginningortoany
pointofyourrecording.PressSTOP/EJECTbuttonafteryou
haverewoundthedesiredamount.
FASTFORWARD(FFWD)
DepressF FWDtoadvancethetape.PressSTOP/EJECTbut-
tonafteryouhavereachedthedesiredlocationonthetape.
REVIEW/PREVIEW
Thisfeatureishelpfulinfindingthebeginningortheendofthe
recordedsegmentonthetape.WhileInPLAYmode,pressand
holdF FWDorREWandlistenforchangefromnoisetosilence
(endofrecording)orfromsilencetonoise(beginningofrecor-
ding).
WhendesiredportionhasbeenreachedreleaseF FWD/REW.
Usethesameprocedureifyouwanttoskipa portionorlistento
thesamesegmentagain.
FASTPLAYBACK
DuringPLAYmode,youcanspeedupplaybackofrecorded
tapesbyplacingtheAVR/FASTPLAYBACKswitchinthe"ON"
position. Tapeplaybackwillbeapproximately20% -25%faster
thannormalplayback.
DIGITALTAPECOUNTER
TheDIGITALCOUNTERisusedtoquicklydeterminetheap-
proximatelocationofdifferentrecordingselections.
1. Rewindtothetieginningofthetape.
2. PushtheRESETCOUNTERbuttontoread"000".After
eachselectionisplayedorrecorded,makea noteofthe
numbersinthereadoutwindow.Thiswillserveasa
referenceforthestartofthenextselectionorrecording.
3.Tolocatea selectionpreviouslynoted,pusheitherthe
FFWDortheREWbuttonuntiltheCOUNTERindicatesthe
selectionnumberyoudesire.
NOTE: TheDIGITALCOUNTERwillnotIndicateactual
distanceinunitsofmeasure;itdeterminesonlythe
relativelocationofeachselection.
REC/BATTLIGHT
TheLED(LightEmittingDiode)isusedasfollows:
•Recordingindicator:LEDlightwillremainONwhenin
CONTINUOUSRECORDoperation.
DuringAVROperation,LEDwilllightonlywhensomethingis
beingrecorded.
•Batteryconditionindicator:Whenintherecordmode,the
brightnessleveloftheLEDindicatesbattery condition. When
LEDlightt>ecomesdim(ordoesnot light), batteriesareweak
andneedreplacing.
NOTE: ACpowerconvertermustbedisconnectedfrom3V

EARPHONEJACK
Withanoptionalmonauralheadphonepluggedin,thespeaker
isautomaticallysilencedtorprivatelistening.
Whenrecordingwiththebuilt-inmicrophone,youcanusethe
optionalheadphonetomonitor(listento)whatisbeingrecorded.
TAPEERASE
Toerasea tapesimplyrecordovertheunwantedrecording.
PREVENTINGACCIDENTALERASURE
Yourrecorderisequippedwitha cassettesensingmechanism.
ThismechanismpreventsRECORDbuttonfrombeingdepres-
sedwhena microcassetteisnotintheunit.
Everytimeyoumakea recording,anypreviousrecordingonthe
cassettetapeisautomaticallyerased.Whenyouhavea recor-
dingyouwanttokeeppermanently,breakoutthetaboftheside
youwanttosaveasshowninthefollowingillustration:

CLEANING THE HEADS
Ironoxideparticlesfromttiemagnetictape will, intime,buildup
ontfiepartstfiatcomeintodirectcontactwiththetape.These
depositscansometimescauseincompleteerasureanda "muf-
fled" soundduringplayback.
Withthecassette door open,thepartsindicatedcan b>e cleaned
(gently)witha liquidheadcleaner,oruseacottonswabmoisten-
edwithdenaturedalcohol.
