CHAPTER 1 – SAFETY
1.1 Foreword
The following set of rules has been drawn up to ensure the application of precautionary principles that help to preserve the safety of persons and property
when the machine is in use. Any failure to comply with these rules can have serious repercussions (bodily injury, etc.), and can even be fatal, so we must draw
your attention to the fact that all persons involved in the use, maintenance, storage or custody of the machine covered by the present manual must be familiar
with these rules.
Any users who cause an accident through failure to comply with these rules will be held personally responsible for the results of their actions.
1.2 Instructions for safety and general use
All persons using, servicing or repairing this equipment must have undergone the training, possess the skills, and have at their disposal the tools necessary to
carry out any such operations.
Before using the equipment, even in a maintenance context, it is necessary to read the corresponding instruction manual, together with its appendices, and the
safety rules in force in the workplace.
Comply carefully with the general safety instructions drawn up for the site by the person in charge of the site, especially if the work is carried out without
stopping or diverting traffic.
The equipment can only be used, serviced or repaired by competent personnel who have undergone thorough specialized training beforehand. The technical
documentation and the instructions are useful in completing the knowledge acquired during the training courses, but they can in no way replace theoretical and
practical qualifying training, provided in accordance with good professional practice.
If the operating company is not in a position to carry out the necessary training for its staff, at a satisfactory level, the GEISMAR/STUMEC Company is able
to provide advice concerning the training programme to be implemented.
The training must include an explanation of the various equipment functions, the instructions for use and maintenance, and the safety rules applicable, together
with practical exercises.

1.3 General safety instructions
•The operator and the working environment
To avoid all risks of accident or injury, it is essential to wear:
-Sturdy, non-flammable clothing that is suitably close-fitting
-Strong, non-slip gloves
-Safety shoes
-Protective eyewear
-Safety helmet
-All other equipment necessary on the site or when using the machine
In the case of use of ear defenders, the safety instructions in force on the site must be complied with at all times.
Make sure that the machine vibrations do not lead to a loss of sensitivity in the hands. Adapt the working periods to the level of vibration caused by
the machine, which is shown within the framework of normal use.
Do not work with the machine if you are not sure that you can control it correctly. Do not start working with the machine until you are sure that you
can do so in full safety, for yourself (good conditions of visibility and lighting) and for other people (work calmly and carefully). Take care to ensure
you have a firm, stable footing; all unstable working positions must be prohibited.
The user must be in a physical and mental condition enabling work to be carried out without danger.
The work area must be free of all obstacles. The work area (and the surrounding areas) must be free of all flammable substances.
If anything does not seem clear to you, whether it concerns the machine or the work to be carried out, ask a qualified person for information. Do not
base your work on assumptions.
For underground use (tunnel or gallery), or in a closed area, make sure there is sufficient ventilation or extraction to avoid the risks generated by
inhaling exhaust gases or by their build-up.
This equipment must not be used in an explosive atmosphere.
Avoid working positions in which exhaust gases could come into contact with parts of the body, whether protected or not.
In a general way, take all necessary precautions to prevent flammable products from coming into contact with fire hazards.
The operator must ensure that no one else is within the working area. In particular, it is necessary to make sure that in the direction in which the
machine is travelling, no one can be hit. If someone is nonetheless in the path of the machine, the operator must stop and warn the person of his
passage.
When the machine is installed on the track, it must be handled only by the number of operators strictly necessary for its normal use.
As the overall size of the machines does not enable extinguishers to be carried on them, we strongly recommend placing extinguishers of an
appropriate type to deal with the fire hazards close to the machine.
The user must comply with all the regulatory environmental instructions applicable to the machine in use.

•The operator and the machine
Before putting the machine into service each time, check that its condition and its operation are in compliance with the instructions.
In particular, make sure that the controls are free and in good working order, and that they are in the “stop” or “neutral” position. Never make any
modifications that could affect correct operation of the control systems.
All the protective elements must be kept carefully in place and in good condition.
Always keep the machine clean and remove any accumulated dust, especially if it could absorb flammable products.
Always move forwards when working.
When working, always hold the machine with both hands to ensure control at all times, and to be able to use it in full safety.
Never bring a machine close to a flame or a source of heat.
The machine must never be positioned close to hot or protruding elements that could damage some parts (tanks, exhaust, housings...).
Never move away from a machine while the engine is running, even when it is idling. Stop the engine immediately if the machine is not in use. After
stopping the engine, wait until all moving parts have come to a complete stop.
Work on the electrical installations on the machine can only be carried out by suitably qualified persons.
Read and make sure you fully understand all the signs placed on the machine, and always comply with all the instructions.
The signs placed on the machine include pictograms, manufacturer’s plates, and instruction labels. Make sure they are kept clean and replaced if
they have been damaged, or if they are missing or illegible. If one of these elements is on a part that is to be replaced, a new element must be present
on the replacement part. Please contact us on this subject.
When using a lifting device, the lifting operations of the machine must be done only using the lifting points indicated on the instruction manual.
When possible, the lifting of the machine is to be done only when the machine needs to be set in or out of the track. If the machine has to stay lifted
(for a maintenance operation for example), the hazardous area must be signaled/marked, so that no one can stay below the machine or walk close by.

•Using and handling fuel and oil
It is essential to stop the engine and set the control to the stop position before carrying out any work involving fuel (filling up, checking
the level, draining, etc.).
Always keep suitable extinguishers ready for use in all areas where fuel is handled (storage, filling up, etc.).
Always store fuel and oil in separate cans specially designed for the purpose and bearing the labels required by regulations. They must be stored in a
safe place, well away from all types of fire hazard.
Each time a machine is started up, and while it is running, make sure that there are no fuel leaks from any part of the machine. If a leak is suspected,
stop the engine immediately and do not restart the machine until the leak has been repaired.
Never carry out any work on a fuel tank or handle fuel to fill a tank, or for any other reason, in an area where there could be a fire hazard (such as a
burning cigarette, a blowtorch, sparks, etc.) or substances that are incandescent or at a high temperature (such as welding spatters, slag, clinker, etc.).
All such work must always be carried out outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
Always turn all mobile phones off while filling a tank with fuel or handling fuel.
Carefully tighten the fuel filler cap each time, and check that no fuel leaks from it.
Always remove a filler cap slowly, to enable any internal pressure to be released without spraying any fuel out. Take special care if the surrounding
temperature is high.
When putting fuel in a machine that has heated up, never fill the tank completely. Do not put in more than three-quarters of the tank capacity.
If fuel starts to boil in the tank when putting fuel in a machine that has heated up, screw the cap on again immediately and leave the machine to cool
down.
Make sure the fuel used is suitable for the type of engine on the machine. See the user manual for the engine.
Do not inhale fuel vapour.
If it is necessary to drain the fuel tank, pour the fuel into a container designed for the purpose and bearing the labels required by regulations. Always
close them tightly, even if they only contain a small quantity. Never use a glass container.
Never use fuel for cleaning work. Use only non-flammable, non-toxic products that are harmless for the user, the equipment and environment.
If fuel has been spilt near the filling area for any reason, clean it up immediately. Clean straightaway any spillage of fuel on the skin. Make sure no
fuel has been spilt on your clothes; otherwise, change clothes immediately. Remove all rags or other materials used to wipe fuel, and store them in a
safe place well away from all sources of heat or combustion. Move the machine well clear of any spilt fuel before starting it up (at least 6 metres
away), and do not move any closer to the area while the engine is running.

•Tools to be used on the machine
Use only the types of tools intended for normal use of the machine.
Measure the speed of all rotating tools at regular intervals.
Never use tools at speeds greater than the maximum speed for which they have been designed and approved.
Never use damaged tools or tools that have reached their maximum level of wear.
•The engine on the machine
Never touch the hot parts of the engine, and especially the exhaust pipe. If it is necessary to work on the engine, wait until it has cooled down.
The factory setting of engine corresponds to the conditions of the production site (fuel, temperature, altitude, etc...), verify at receipt of the
machine the rotational speed of the engine and correct if necessary.
Check the engine rotation speed at regular intervals, and especially after fitting tools or reassembling the machine. Adjust if necessary.
Never exceed the speed shown in the technical specifications.
After starting with the choke, remember to return the choke to the normal running position.
Never wind the starter rope around your hand, and never release it suddenly.
If the machine does not operate correctly after the engine has been started, stop the engine and inform the head of maintenance.
For petrol engines, use only spark plugs whose tops are as shown in drawing 1 opposite. If the plug is fitted with a
screw top, make sure the top is fully tightened. After fitting the spark plug, make sure that the plug cap is in good
condition and that it stays firmly on the plug. Carefully check the fastening system to make sure that no sparks can
be formed.
•Using trolleys (If applicable)
A machine designed to work on a trolley must not be used without the trolley. The trolley is thus an integral part of the machine. The machine
and the trolley must not be used separately.
Trolleys whose use is dedicated to a machine must never be used to transport equipment or personnel, or attached to a vehicle.
Before fitting the machine on its trolley, it must be placed correctly on the track to ensure that it can run freely. If it is on a sloping section of
track, make sure the trolley is kept immobile while the machine is being put on the track or taken off it.
Attention, the trolley takes up the full width of the track and can cause injuries to the legs if it hits someone.

The principal risks which may be engendered for the user and others in the
vicinity when the power wrenches are used are as follows:
Fires due to the handling of fuel.
Injuries caused by the incorrect fitting of sockets.
Excessively loose clothing becoming trapped by the socket.
Injuries caused by holding the machine incorrectly while working.
•When changing sockets or accessories, never replace pins with nails,
metal wire, etc: which might cause trapping and dragging of clothing.
Always take care when replacing the cylindrical pin and the flexible
plastic retaining ring.
•Since there are no controls or handling devices near the exhaust pipe,
there is no risk of burns in normal use. If special work is to be carried
out, wait for the exhaust system to cool down.
•When working, always hold the machine firmly with both hands.
•The machine must be handled carefully, and only when the engine is
not running. Take account of the weight of the machine when
determining the most appropriate resources for handling the machine
in complete safety, particularly when access to the work site is
difficult.
1.4.2 Individual protection equipment
•Personnel using the equipment must wear the clothing
specified in paragraph 1.3 “General safety
instructions/the operator and his environment”.
•The operator must wear a helmet and safety shoes with
non-slip soles and steel caps.
•It is also advisable to use a means of protection against
the inhalation of exhaust fumes.
•The use of ear protection is also recommended (strictly
complying, however, with the applicable railway
regulations applicable on the site in order to
determine whether or not such protection may be
used).
1.4.3 Handling fuel
•Clean the area around the filler orifice, so that no contaminants can enter
the tank or interfere with the filler cap seal.
•Open the filler cap carefully in order to allow any internal pressure to
escape slowly without spillage of fuel.
•Never use a tool to open the bayonet-locking filler cap. This could
damage the cap and allow fuel to escape.
•Only use lead-free petrol with an octane rating of at least 90 RON.
GASOHOL, METHANOL, ETHANOL and ALCOHOL are
FORBIDDEN. Using such products increases the risk of fire or
explosion and consequent serious injury, or even death, of the operator
or other persons in the vicinity.
•Petrol is a highly inflammable fuel: before starting the machine, move it
at least 6 metres away from the place where filling takes place.
•Use a petrol-oil mixture measured out exactly as recommended in §
3.2.1 "Preparing the mixture", in order to minimise the formation of
carbon deposits which could create sparks in the exhaust system.
•Check regularly the sealing of the fuel filler cap. Inspect the condition of
the O-ring fitted to the filler cap. Replace it immediately if any seepage
of fuel is present.

1.4.4 Transport - Handling
•Never transport the machine with the engine running, even at idling
speed.
•Carry the machine only by the tubular handle, with the impact
mechanism oriented towards the rear.
•When transporting the machine in a vehicle, immobilise it by attaching
it carefully.
1.4.5 Working
•The machine must only be used by a single authorised operator.
•The machine MUST be used in the AXIS OF ROTATION OF THE
WRENCH.
•If the work takes place on a double track, pay particular attention to the
traffic moving on the track which remains in operation. In all
circumstances, the impact wrench must be operated in accordance with
the railway instructions applicable on the site where the machine is
being used.
•This machine is designed and constructed solely for the purposes of
tightening and loosening the bolts of rail clips and fasteners. Any
utilisation which deviates from that described in the present manual will
be considered non-compliant and release the manufacturer from all
liability, which will then be incumbent upon the user.
Compliant utilisation implies compliance with the stipulations inherent
to the use and maintenance of the machine as described in the present
manual. It is also essential to observe all described and recommended
accident prevention instructions, taking into account the general rules in
terms of occupational health and safety and legislation in force.
•Check that the machine is in good condition before starting it. Never
make any modification to the machine.
•Do not use ether or similar products to assist in starting the engine.
•Do not use the choke while working: it should only be used when
starting.
•It is mandatory to stop the engine before undertaking any servicing or
maintenance operation. If it is essential for the engine to run (carburettor
adjustment and verification of maximum no-load speed), make sure that
the working zone is well ventilated.
•Never use the portable power wrench of the exhaust silencer is faulty
(risk of fire and hearing disorders).
•As soon as the engine starts, it produces toxic exhaust
gases. These gases may be odourless and invisible.
Never work with the machine in enclosed or poorly
ventilated places. When working in ditches,
depressions in the land or restricted spaces, always
take care to provide adequate ventilation. Danger of
poisoning.
•Precise adjustment of the engine idling speed is particularly important,
so that the wrench does not rotate when the accelerator trigger is in the
idle position (refer to §5.1.4 "Carburettor" if adjustment is required).
N.B.: when the accelerator trigger is released, the wrench continues to
rotate freely for a short period.
•If compressed air is used for cleaning purposes, wear protective
clothing and a mask or goggles. The nozzle air pressure must be less
than 2 bar.
1.4.6 Safety pictograms and instructions
Safety pictograms and instructions must be present on the impact wrench at
the position indicated.
If any of these is missing or damaged, a replacement must be ordered
immediately and fitted in the specified position.
If a part bearing a label is replaced, make sure that a new label has been
fitted to the new part.

Description of equipment
Portable power wrench
Type MIW.3
The MIW.3 portable power wrench is designed to tighten and release lag
screws, fishplate bolts and nuts. The machine is notable for being the most
powerful on the market, capable of releasing the tightest components
which may be encountered on railway tracks.
Light and compact, the machine is easily carried and manipulated by a
single operator. Ease of use and low vibration (in spite of its robustness
and high power) make the MIW.3 the ideal choice for work on railway
sites.
The MIW.3 portable power wrench is powered by an air-cooled 2-stroke
engine with a centrifugal clutch, an all-position membrane carburettor and
built-in fuel pump, and electronically-controlled magneto ignition.
Depending on the situation, the machine can be used horizontally for
fishplate bolts and nuts, or vertically for lag screws.
The MIW.3 was developed in an exclusive partnership between GEISMAR
STUMEC and STIHL, and is thus the only portable power wrench to be
type-approved with a STIHL engine.
The MIW.3 is also notable for its effective protection against projections of
ballast.
The MIW.3 has two handles for safety in handling and use, whether
horizontally or vertically.
The MIW.3 has a standard 1(25.4 mm) square drive.
An oil-bath lubrication system is fitted, offering a number of advantages:
- More even lubrication than with grease, which does not guarantee
homogeneous lubrication of the active surfaces in the machine.
- Good dissipation of heat and attenuation of the noise produced by the
impact mechanism.
Draining and refilling of oil is via a magnetic plug, which retains any metal
particles present in the oil.
Greater operator comfort can be obtained by using an optional support
trolley.

3.1 Fitting the socket
The operations involved in fitting and removing the socket must be performed with the engine stopped.
When changing a socket, never replace the cylindrical pin by a protruding fixing object
(nail, metal wire, etc.) which could trap and drag the operator’s clothing and cause injury.
Take care always to replace the cylindrical pin and the flexible retaining ring.
To fit the socket, proceed as follows:
- Partially insert the flexible retaining ring 解in the groove provided for the
purpose in the socket 会, leaving one of the two holes free to insert the pin 塊.
-Engage the socket 会on the square drive 回.
-Align the hole in the socket 会with the hole in the square drive 回, then insert
the cylindrical pin 塊.
-Then loosen the flexible ring 解.
•The output shaft has a 1(25.4 mm) square drive (Ref. 56036). Use special
fittings for impact sockets (size 32 to 42) with a 1” square drive and fixing by
pin (Ref. 56043) and flexible retaining ring (Ref. FPR).
Fitting a reducer diminishes the efficiency of the machine.
3.2 Fuel
3.2.1 Preparing the mixture
The two-stroke engine of the impact wrench must be supplied with a mixture of petrol and engine oil. The quality of these components and the mixing ratio
have a decisive influence on the operation and longevity of the engine.
Direct skin contact with the fuel and the inhalation of fuel vapour must be avoided.
•Petrol use only non-leaded or leaded petrol with an octane rating of at least 90 RON.
GASOHOL, METHANOL, ETHANOL and ALCOHOL are PROHIBITED
If the machine has an exhaust catalyser, the use of non-leaded petrol is mandatory. If the tank is filled several times using a mixture containing
leaded petrol, the catalytic effect may be substantially reduced.

•Engine oil only use good-quality engine oil intended for air-cooled two-stroke engines. It is preferable to use STIHL oil for two-stroke engines, which is
specially made for STIHL engines and guarantees long engine life. Do not use oil intended for water-cooled engines, nor oil for 4-stroke engines.
For machines with exhaust catalysers, prepare the mixture only with STIHL 2-stroke engine oil at a ratio of 1:50.
•Preparing the mixture always prepare the mixture in a clean container approved for use with petrol. Unsuitable petrol or oil, or incorrect mixing ratios,
may cause serious engine damage. Petrol or oil of poor quality incur a risk of damage to the engine, sealing rings and fuel tanks and pipes.
Start by pouring half the volume of petrol to be mixed.
Pour in all the oil.
Mix by agitating the container.
Finally, pour in the remainder of the petrol.
Carefully mix again before refilling the machine.
Mixing ratio
-STIHL 2-stroke engine oil
1:50 = 1 part oil + 50 parts of petrol
-other good-quality 2-stroke engine oil
1:25 = 1 part oil + 25 parts petrol
Storing the mixture a mixture prepared with unleaded petrol is not stable for long periods. The mixture must therefore be prepared when it is needed, not in
advance.
3.3.2 Filling with fuel
Before adding fuel, shake the mixing container vigorously. Pressure may build up in
the can. Open it with care.
Before filling, carefully clean the filler cap and surrounding area in order to prevent
contamination from entering the tank.
Position the machine vertically so that the tank filler cap is oriented upwards.
Never fill the tank completely: fill it to no more than ¾ of its maximum capacity.
Never fill the tank when the engine is running.

•Opening the cap
Take hold of the folding handle and raise it to the vertical position (Fig.1).
Turn the cap fully anticlockwise (approximately ¼ of a turn) (Fig.2). The mark on the tank cap
and the “open position” symbol marked on the machine must coincide.
Remove the tank filler cap (Fig.3).
Open the tank filler cap carefully so that the internal pressure escapes slowly without
spilling fuel.
Never use a tool to open the cap. This could cause damage to the cap and result in an
escape of fuel.
•Fill the tank in a well-ventilated area far from possible sources of ignition, such as welding
torches, sparks or welding debris.
While filling the tank, never spill fuel and never fill the tank to the top. Only put in a quantity of
fuel equal to ¾ of the capacity of the tank.
•Closing the cap
With the handle in the vertical position, offer the tank cap in the open position. The mark on
the tank cap and the open position symbol marked on the machine must coincide (Fig.4).
Push the fuel tank filler cap down until it stops.
Maintaining the pressure on the tank cap, turn it fully clockwise (approximately ¼ of a turn)
(Fig.5). If this works correctly, the markings on the inner ring and outer ring of the tank filler
cap should coincide.
Fold the handle down. The tank filler cap is now locked (Fig.6).
3.3 Inspecting the machine
Before each utilisation of the machine, in order to detect any defects, a visual inspection must be carried out by a competent and authorised person.
This inspection is mainly visual and functional.
The inspection phase allows a check that the various components are safe and have not been damaged during transport or storage.
•Inspection of protective covers and moulded assemblies (this verification is carried out with the engine stopped)
-Make a visual check that there are no external defects, deformations, superficial cracks, worn areas or traces of corrosion.

•Checking the fuel level (this check is done with the engine stopped)
-Check the fuel level and top up if necessary ( : be sure to refer to 1.3 “General safety instructions” / “Utilisation and handling of fuel” and 3.2.2
“Filling with fuel”).
•Functional checks (these checks are done with the engine stopped)
-Check the correct operation of the accelerator trigger, the accelerator trigger safety lock and the combination lever. These devices must move freely and not
be modified.
-Check that the shaft rotates freely under no load.
•Check of safety devices
-Make sure that the handles are clean and dry.
-Start the engine ( : be sure to refer to 4.2 “Utilisation of the machine”) and check that the engine stops when the combination lever is moved to the “0”
position.
-Check that the wrench does not rotate when the accelerator trigger is in the idle position (refer to §5.1.4 "Carburettor" if adjustment is required).
•Miscellaneous checks
-Check that no oil leaks are present and that all mounting bolts are tight.

CHAPTER 4 – UTILISATION
4.1 Conditions of utilisation
Working zone and position of operator
The operator must work in the zone between the two rails of the same
track. The operator must be inside this zone in order to carry out bolting
or screwing work (on the inside and outside of the rail).
If specific work has to be done from outside the working zone,
check the safety conditions, particularly if traffic on the adjacent
line is not interrupted.

4.2 Using the machine
Positions of the universal lever
0 = Stop engine – ignition off.
= Normal working position – the engine is running or is able to start.
To move the universal lever from the position to or , push simultaneously the accelerator trigger lock and the
accelerator trigger.
= Hot starting – position for starting hot engine – when the accelerator trigger is pressed, the universal lever moves to the
normal running position.
= Cold starting – position for starting a cold engine.
Starting
To move the universal control lever from the normal position to the
choke closed position , press simultaneously the accelerator trigger
lock and the accelerator trigger and and hold them down. Then
place the universal control lever in the desired position.
To move to the starting position , first bring the universal control
lever to the choke closed position , then push the universal
control lever to the starting position .
Moving to the starting position is only possible from the choke
closed position .
When the accelerator trigger lock is pressed while simultaneously
pressing then releasing the accelerator trigger, the universal control
lever leaves the starting position and moves to the normal running
position .
Adjust the universal control lever according to the ambient
temperature and the engine temperature:
-if the engine is cold, of if the engine stalls when accelerating after
starting, set the universal lever to the (cold starting) position.
-if the engine is hot (as soon as the engine has been running for about
one minute), or after the first ignition kick, set the universal lever to
(hot starting).
