INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on purchasing your GT-Kontiki electronic fishing system. We
know that by using it you will enjoy unprecedented fishing success.
The GT-Kontiki is the world’s first electronic long-line fishing system with
sophisticated point-and-go ‘autopilot’ steering that follows an operator set
bearing.
We believe the GT-Kontiki is the most reliable and effective beach launched
Kontiki fishing system in the world. Developed and exhaustively tested in New
Zealand, it is completely at home on beaches such as the rugged west coast.
Please thoroughly read this manual and view the instructional DVD before
attempting to use your GT-Kontiki. As well as the warnings listed below, there are
precautionary guidelines throughout this manual. Make sure you and anyone
assisting you reads and understands how to operate the GT-Kontiki in a safe
manner before using it.
All GT-Kontiki kits come with a 24-month warranty which covers
manufacturer defects.

SAFETY FIRST
The GT-Kontiki is one of the easiest and safest methods of fishing from surf
beaches, but it is important to take precautions to prevent harm to yourself or
others.
Equipment safety
Hooks are sharp. Be careful when handling them, especially when clipping
them to and feeding out the main line (the hooks have a way of flicking up
and targeting fingers!). Always lay hooks facing away from you when
attaching the traces to the nylon line.
Always carry a sharp knife to cut any traces that get caught.
When retrieving the line, keep fingers clear of the winch drum and be aware
of knots, joins and hooks if you are manually guiding the line onto the drum.
The nylon line can burn or cut you if you try to grab it while it is feeding out or
retrieving line from the drum.
Keep fingers clear of the GT-Kontiki’s propeller. If working around the
propeller area, disconnect and remove the batteries from the unit.
Do not attempt to fast-charge, short out the terminals or overcharge the
batteries.

Beach Safety
Always use your GT-Kontiki in places where your fishing will not interfere
with other water users or present a hazard to navigation.
Do not use the GT-Kontiki when there are swimmers in the water.
Be aware of other beach users, including children, dogs and seabirds when
feeding out or retrieving your line.
Where vehicles or horses may be using the beach, make sure that your
operation is clearly visible and there is no danger of anyone colliding with
your line. Deploy your GT-Kontiki as close to the water’s edge as practical.
Brief any helpers on safety procedures and keep bystanders clear of hooks
and traces.
Use the strobe light if fishing at night or in low light. Shine a light on your line
if there is a danger of someone walking into it.

Be aware of tidal currents and rips that may sweep your line towards other
beach users.
Keep your GT-Kontiki in view. A pair of binoculars is a useful addition to your
fishing kit.
For the safety of your equipment, always operate your GT-Kontiki at least
1,000 metres from another Kontiki user.
Do not venture too deep into the water to launch your GT-Kontiki –thigh
deep (800mm) is enough. Be aware of rogue waves and rising tides.
Never swim out while attempting to retrieve a fouled line.
Do not fish from locations where a rising tide could cut-off your retreat.
If in doubt, find another place to fish or come back another day.

Environmental Safety
Try to minimise your impact on the beach and ocean.
Obey all the local fishing regulations pertaining to fish size and catch limits.
Visit www.fish.govt.nz for information.
Stop the winch to unhook your catch at the water’s edge and return
undersized fish or unwanted species alive. (The winch remote control makes
this easy.)
Use a wet cloth or glove when handling fish you intend to release.
Quickly kill any fish you intend to keep.
Catch only what you can use and remember that you don’t have to attach the
legal maximum number of hooks each time you go fishing, nor do you have
to catch your limit. Let’s leave fish in the water for the future.
Do not leave tangled line or rusty hooks on the beach.
Don’t bury fish guts and skeletons in the sand –dispose of fish waste at
home.
If you are using a vehicle, drive considerately and stay clear of sand dunes,
which are home to many nesting sea birds and are vulnerable to erosion after
vehicle damage.
Take all your rubbish with
you when you leave.

THE GTK-WINCH
The GTK-Electric Winch is itself as revolutionary as the GT-Kontiki.
The sturdy aluminium frame quickly converts to a beach trolley with the
addition of an optional GT-frame, bait board, and high-quality wheels.
The powerful, soft-start electric motor allows jerk-free retrieval of your line.
An adjustable, factory pre-set mechanical brake prevents over-running.
The three-speed winch, plus a pulse
button, allows greater control during
line retrieval.

BATTERY CHARGER USE
The GTK-SBCH12V GTK 12VLead-Acid Smart 4 Stage
Battery Charger (1.25 Amps)
Before using your GT Kontiki, the batteries will require a full charge. Read over
the following section for the safe and correct use of your GTK 4 stage Smart
Charger.
The GTK 4 Stage Smart Charger represents the world’s most up to date
technology for lead-acid type battery charging. The charger has a programmed
four auto stage charging process, it is designed for all kinds of 12V 7~80ah lead-
acid batteries, such as SLA, AGM and Gel Cell batteries.
The charging process:
First Stage “Ud” - Desulfurization of the battery through an 18V pulse.
Second Stage “Im” - Applies a bulk current charging ( 1.25 to 1.3 Amps).
Third Stage “Uo” – limits output voltage 14.7V.
Fourth Stage “Up” - Final charging and pulsing to maintain the charge.
The charger display’s the charging progress using the LED battery capacity
display.
For added safety, the charger has an inner-protection mode, so that if the
battery polarity is reversed or the output connectors shorted, it will
automatically cut out.

Charge times for GTK Batteries (estimate only)
These estimates are based on the battery being recently drained by the GTK KONTIKI (which cuts
off the unit at around 7.6 Volts when under load.) If the GTK batteries are stored for significant
amounts of time after being drained, (not recommended as this can/will damage the battery & void
warranty), it will take longer than the below figures to charge, and may reduce the capacity and life
expectancy of the batteries. Gel Cell batteries dissipate at a rate of around 4 % per month, so 6
months in storage will drop them by approx 25%.
A GT-Kontiki battery can be used to power the GTK-Winch, but because it is
smaller, it will not operate it for as long as the larger winch battery.
Charger Display Panel
Please note:
The smart charger will not be able to put a battery through a
desulfurizing process unless it is in a discharged state. This process will
be applied to batteries that have been removed from a kontiki that has
cut out due to low voltage sensitivity and has flashed the bottom three
run time indicator lights. This shows that the battery is flat.
Charging Progress Indicator:
Indicates battery capacity from
25% to 100% when charging.
All 4 lamps flashing means
battery polarity reversed or
output shorted.
Power On
(when AC input is ok)
When this LED lamp is “on”
and other 3 lamps are “off”,
this means the charger
entered the recover
(desulfurizing) process.
