INTRODUCTION
The Hammond HL1000A HF LinearAmplifier isa one-stage
linear amplifierusing one glassenvelope 3-500Z Eimac
Triode. The unit isa completelyself-containedtable
top unitcapable of 1000watts input. In keepingwith
the pasttradition ofthe HL500 and HL750 seriesamplifiers,
only the highestqualitycomponentswereused inthe
design of thisamplifier. The amplifier is designed
for SSB, CW, RTTY orAM operation onthe amateurbands
between 3.5and 29.7mHz. The amplifier canbe factory
modified for frequenciesoutside the amateurbands for
commercial or military applications.
The HL1008A comes factory wired for115vacbutcanbe
re-wired for230vac operation.
PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS carefully and fully
beforeattempting to operate the amplifier.
There are verydangerousvoltages
presentinside the amplifierwhen the power
is inON position.Removing thetop cover
while theAC power is connectedmust be done
cautiously and with the utmost care.
INSTALLATION
1. Remove the amplifierfrom the shippingcarton and
examine for damage, (notify the transportcompany
immediately ifany damage is present.)

2. Save the carton for futureshipment to anotherlocation
or storage.
3. The 3-500Z triodetube is shippedseparately and
must be installedbeforeoperatingamplifier in
any way.
4.The followingaccessoriesshould be includedwith
your HL1000A amplifier:

(b) WarrantyCard
(c) ShieldedControlCable
(d) ExtraFuses(Cathode l A) (ABC-15)
OPERATINGLOCATION
The amplifiermust be located inan openareasuchthat
the flow ofair from thetopis unrestricted. Location
should beas close as possible toa reliable 115/230
vac AC source to minimize anyAC voltagedrop.
INSTALLING TUBE (See Figure 4)
1. Remove 4 boltsfrombottom of linearcabinet and
carefullyslide the innerpart ofthe unitfrom
the rear ofthe cabinet.
2. Remove the perforated top cover ofthe amplifier
givingaccess tothe interior oftheRF section
ofthe amplifier.
3. Putthe 3-500Z tube inthe socket. Be verycareful
notto exert any lateral or twistingpressure on
the glassportion ofthe tube. The tube is easily
damaged. Fasten the platelead tothe anode connector.
Remove the screw inthetopofthe anodeconnector
on topofthe tube and flex the parasiticchoke
and plate lead until the mountinghole inthe plate
is positioneddirectlyabove the screwhole inthe
anode connector. Insert the screw and hold the
plate leadfirmlywhiletightening the screw.

Do not, under any circumstances, exert
too great a pressure or twisting,bendingmotion
in the anodeconnector or glassportion ofthe tubes.
Excessivepressure can cause a hair-linefracture
in the tubes' glassenvelope,destroying the tube.
The tubes' pins are alsoparticularly delicate,
and can easilybreak ifthe tube isnot inserted
and removedverycarefully.
4. Replace thetop shield but leave the outsidecabinet
off until the amplifier has beenconnected and tested.
CABLING
All the followingcablesmust be connectedbefore the
amplifier is operated.
AC POWERCABLE
The HL1000Aamplifiercomesfrom the factorywired for
operationfrom a 120vac single phase, 60Hz powersource.
The greenwire inthe powercord isthe ground wire and
must be connected tothe neutralprimary ofthe plug
that you select for connection into the powerline.
The black and whitewiresmust be connected tothe other
two pins forthe120vac operation. The otherlead of
the Belden AC cordplugsdirectlyinto the rearpanel
AC input socket.

For (115,vac operation, itis onlynecessary to change
several jumperconnections onthe terminalstriplocated
onthe powertransformer inthe powersupplycompartment.

The amplifierwill be damaged ifthe orangejumper
wire (s)is connectedincorrectly. Be sure to
disconnect AC plugfrom the amplifierbeforechanging
jumpers onthe terminalstrip.
ANTENNACOAX
Use only RG 8/u coax (orits equivalent) to connect
the HL1000A tothe antenna. The antennaconnectormates
with the amphenelconnectormarked RF out, onthe rear
panel ofthe amplifier.

Do not operate the amplifierwithout
a load or into a loadwith SWR greater than 2:1.
Measure the antennas' SWR with anSWR meter or
in-line Watt-meter and determinethat theSWR
is in factlessthan 2:1.
Withstandby/operateswitch inthe STANDBYposition, the
exciter outputwillpassthrough the amplifierdirectly
to the antenna. The amplifierdoes not have tobeoffto
accomplishthisbypass.
INPUTCABLE
A cablemust be connectedfrom the output of yourexciter
•
to the SO-239 RF inputconnector onthe rearpanel ofthe
amplifier.
ALC (AUTOMATICLEVEL CONTROL) CABLE
Plug theALC cableinto the phono jack located onthe rear
panel (markedALC) and into theALC feedbackconnection
(or equivalent) onthe exciter. Ifthe exciterdoes not
have provision for feedback ofALC voltagefrom the amplifier,
thensimplyomit theuseofthe cable.
ANTENNARELAY
A controlcableshould be pluggedinto the phonosocket
marked antennarelay onthe rearpanel ofthe amplifier.
This cableconnects the keyingsignalfrom the exciter to
switch the amplifier tothe transmitcondition and must
be pluggedinto the socket or connectormarkedantennarelay
(or equivalent) onthe exciter. The exciterneedonlysupply
a shortingrelaycontact(duringtransmit) tokeythe amplifier.

Do not apply any voltage tothe antenna
relay phonejack. The internalrelay is activated
by a self-containedpowersupply.
OPERATING CONTROLS
Refer to Figure 2.
OFF/ONPOWER SWITCH
Thisswitch is used for turning the amplifier onand
Off.

MULTIMETERSWITCH
This 4--positiori pushbuttonswitchselects the function
of the multimeter as describedbelow.
HV
With the switch in thisposition, the metermonitors
the amplifiers' platevoltage. The fullscalereading
in thisposition is 3000 VDC. Normalplatevoltage
with the amplifier iri the standbyposition (unkeyed)
is about 2500 VDCforSSBandCW operation.Linevoltage
variationswillcausecorrespondingvariations inthe
platevoltage.(Note:Reading for platevolts is X10<P.
GRID
With the switch in thisposition, the metermonitors
the amplifiers' gridcurrent. The fullscalemeter
reading in thisposition is150ma DC. The nominal
grid currentduring SSBon peaks is approximately 100
ma. Maximum tune-up gridcurrent inSSBorCW single
tone is 14-0 rna marked onthe dial asa red bar.

RF
The metermonitors the outputpower. Itis usefulduring
tune-ups for verifyingresonance on eachband.
STANDBY/OPERATE SWITCH
Thisswitchallows the exciterbypassfeature,i.e. in
the standbyposition, the power ofthe exciterfeeds
through the linear and appears atthe output connector.
In the operatemode the linear is ready for transmitting.
STANDBY/OPERATE LIGHTS
Thesepilotlightsmarkedstandby and operateindicate
the status ofthe standby/operateswitch. Inthe standby
.mode the light isredandinthe operatemodegreen.
ZENERFUSE
This .5amp fast-biofuse isthe cathodefuse.Never
usea higheramperagefusethan theone specified.
TUNECONTROL
The tunecontrol isa vernierdialconnected toanair
variable intheRF section. The disc dial is screened
100to0 indicatingthatmaximumcapacitance isat100
and minimum at zero.Approximatesettings forthe tune
controlsettings forthe amateurbands are given in Figure
3for yourconvenience.
LOADCONTROL
Thiscontrolmatches the amplifiersoutputnetwork to
the load. Refer to Figure 3 forthe approximateinitial
settings forthe frequencyrangedesired. A loadsetting
of 100 corresponds to maximumloadcapacitormesh and
0 representsminimumcapacitorsetting.

BAND
The bandswitchselects the applicableinput and output
circuits forthe HL1000A to operate inanyoneofthe following
bands:
(a)80 meters 3.5 to4.0 mHz
(b)40 meters 7.0 to 7.3 mHz
(c)20 meters14.0 to 14.35 mHz
(d)!5 meters21.0 to 21.45 mHz
(e)10 meters28.0 to 29.7 mHz
Never move the bandswitchwhile the
linear amplifier is keyed or operating.
REAR PANELCONTROLS

RF OUT:
Nominal outputimpedence is50 ohms. Donot operatethis
equipment without a load or into a loadwhere the SWR is
greater that 2:1. Use onlyRG-8/ucoax orits equivalent
to connect toan appropriate antenna or dummyload.
RF IN:
This amphenol typeSO-239connectoraccepts the drivecoax
from an exciter.
ZENERFUSE:
This fuseprotects the cathodecircuitfrom over-current.
Itisa 1 amp fast-biotype of fuse.
ANT RELAY:
This isa phone jack inputthatwhenshorted to ground the
amplifier antennarelaycloses.
