Designed by man
MILLE line components membranes were designed according to the most innovative FEM
softwares (FEM: Finished Elements Modelling) and tested through prototypes, measurements
and technical listening. This process permits to control every step of the project and to
constantly check its evolution.
ML 280 dome has a special profile, exclusively designed by HERTZ: its first section is
hemispheric, the top is hyperbolic. The relation of emitting diameter, membrane height and
surround profile ensures very low Fs without affecting dynamics at mid-high frequency. The
component dispersion is flat also at extreme off-axis response and at ultrasonic frequencies.
ML 1600 “V” CONE has a totally new, HERTZ proprietary exponential geometry. Its contact point
with mobile voice coil uses a very light paper support, which optimises mechanical coupling and
insures very high efficiency. This new geometry provides very flat off-axis response, up to so-far
unbelievable frequencies for a component with this diameter, no break-up phenomena and
optimal damping, for rich, accurate sound in the whole bandwidth.

Created by nature
Cotton-injected paper fiber, natural resin imbued Tetolon®.
The materials used for ML 1600 midbass and ML 280 tweeter membranes are created by nature
and treated according to processes perfected in decades. In HERTZ laboratories, tradition
supports innovation.
For ML 1600 cone construction we realised, analysed and studied more than 35 materials,
different in terms of paper fibers composition and impregnating components. The mixture we
selected ensures good stiffness, damping and lightness. No other rigid fiber, composite material
sandwich or metal mould can provide such natural, accurate, dynamic sound.
The fiber we used for ML 280 membrane is a mixture of cotton and silk, in controlled
percentage; together with the natural resin impregnating treatment, it makes the component go
beyond the audible range, like all stiff dome components (metal, rigid fibers) but without
generating the troublesome resonances which characterise this type of technology. The
diaphragm can, thus, vibrate at very high frequencies without coloration and without affecting or
spoiling sound.

The magnet of a long excursion midwoofer has to comply with various important parameters,
some of which may be in contrast with the others. You need to be able to wisely mix different
technical solutions and thoroughly examine every choice, carefully considering pros and cons.
Magnetic flux symmetry around the gap, field intensity and width, mobile voice coil inductance
modulation, compactness and lightness: these are some of the fundamental features to get
state-of-the-art performance.
Plates employ the same ferromagnetic material designed for ML 280 tweeter, with high saturation
level; they are machined through high precision process, through numerical control equipment.
The magnet geometry generates a perfectly linear induction field, up to mobile voice coil extreme
excursions. The flux reaches a value which was inconceivable a few years ago: 1.2 Tesla in the
midbass gap, with 36 mm diameter voice coil, ensure bursting dynamics, very high efficiency,
very good dissipation.

The design and development of MILLE components magnets employed advanced FEM
(Finished Elements Modelling) technology. Little differences in the magnetic structure can
enhance musical and acoustic performance. In HERTZ laboratories, every detail is carefully
analysed and assessed.
When designing the magnet of a tweeter, it is important to concentrate energy in a limited area
around mobile voice coil. The mechanical excursion of this component is very limited but
accelerations speed is very high. For mobile voice coil very good control, you need to have high
magnetic induction in the gap and to use first-grade ferromagnetic materials. ML 280 tweeter
employs uses high thermal threshold, REN®neodymium double magnet and very low carbon
percentage iron, especially designed for it. The magnet geometry creates a 1.6 Tesla induction
field, with perfect lines symmetry.

The load seen by the tweeter dome rear part affects the tweeter performance, as it occurs to a
midrange or a big diameter woofer. Traditional geometry creates asymmetric movement because
the membrane can “see” a free space in the front, while there is a rear load due to the very small
volume between central pole and dome.
We designed eight vents in ML 280; they ensure a resonance-free matching with the rear damping
chambers. The volumes and vents size, as well as the special absorbing material, provide mobile
voice coil with optimal damping, generating natural, clear, dynamic sound. We put a different type
of acoustic material under the dome; it is thicker and more efficient at high temperatures and it
traces the membrane rear profile. This eliminates all remaining resonances and provides very
detailed, natural trebles.

Section
ML 280
The elaboration of an advanced set of dynamic measurements pointed out a determinant factor,
usually ignored by most manufacturers. Mobile voice coil inductance modulation, derived from the
winding interaction with central pole and gap, seems to generate the biggest second harmonics
distortion. When the component excursion gets bigger than the voice coil height, there is an
interference which heavily affects FFT (Fourier Transfert Function), causing strong intermodulation.
ML 1600 magnet geometry, together with central pole complete shielding through a pure copper
plate, provides exceptionally constant parameters even with high power in the input and at long
excursions.
You can listen to totally controlled, accurate musical signal even with very high sound pressure and
to firm dynamics in whatever conditions.
When designing these drivers, we focused on installation versatility in order to have light speakers,
sized according to international standards. By easing installation, we give you the chance to get
extraordinary performance also in difficult conditions, without having to modify cars interiors.
These are very high quality components, whith thrilling look and very easy to use.

ML280 signature
Parameters selection and quality control are very important to HERTZ production. Every
component is subjected to several quality controls along the whole production line and it is then
selected according to strict criteria and very small tolerances.
To satisfy the needs of the most demanding enthusiasts, HERTZ worked out a very precise,
selective matching process for ML 280 tweeters.
ML 280 Signature components are chosen at the end of the production process through an
analysis which evaluates their performance in the domain of time and of frequency. The data are
recorded in a special database which analyses their performance and couples the pieces
according to their serial number.
The result is a packaging which contains a pair of identical tweeters, able to ensure state-of-the-
art performance in state-of-the-art systems.
Every element of a speaker contributes to sound reproduction. The basket supports mobile voice
coil and magnet and takes part in acoustic emission through its own vibrations and through the
reflections generated by its back arms. The mechanical resonances of a traditional basket, usually
between 800 and 1300 Hz (according to mass and stiffness), absorbe precious energy which
should be transferred only to the membrane.
ML 1600 basket is totally new and completely inert thanks to its self-
standing design and to the use of a light, damped aluminium
alloy. Its acoustic transparency is state-of-the-art and sound
is more natural, completely colorless and accurate.
The look of this speaker is incredibly thrilling and
innovative.
The same considerations and reflections made for ML 1600 new basket were made when
designing ML 280 housing and ML 500R face plate. The membrane is the only element of a
speaker which must play. Utmost attention was paid to the elimination of any resonance which
might spoil acoustic performance.
ML 280 whole structure is made of aluminium, milled through numerical control equipment, while
ML 500R face plate is made of first quality die-cast aluminium alloy.
These workings generate completely inert structures, allowing the membrane to change the
smallest, most delicate sound tones into acoustic energy.

ML 500R unique feature is its acoustic radiation dipolar typology.
The absence of a back load makes membrane work in maximum symmetry, with ideal damping.

Enthusiasts and professionals believe that ribbon speakers can ensure faster transients than
traditional cone drivers thanks to their very light mobile voice coil. What they do not consider is the
delicate relation among the induction in the gap, the length of the wire into the field and the
membrane mass.
ML 500R is one of the very few isodynamic ribbon speakers with push-pull motor section and
membrane/magnet innovative geometry.
The motor structure was designed to generate a
perfectly symmetrical magnetic field for eliminating
intermodulation distortions and concentrating very
high energy in the gap. You get a speaker with 6 dB
higher efficiency than a traditional component,
extraordinary dynamics and very high thermal
dissipation.

When trying to have good quality listening in car, the main
problem you have to solve is the different distance of the two
stereo channels from the listening point. Both the driver and the
passenger who sit in the car have an average offset between
the two channels equal to about 25-35 cm. Because of this
difference, the sound of the farther channel is perceived 85 ms
later than the other. Human hearing does not consciously
distinguish this delay and cannot elaborate perceived sound in a
natural way, as if it came from the same source.
Used for the first time in a commercial system, TAD®(Time Alignment Device) circuit corrects the
speaker response in the time domain by inserting a selective delay in the acoustic response and
eliminating perception delay.
Imaging gets in the center of the dashboard and sound is natural, solid, real, accurate.
The possibility to select listening point according to three different configurations (driver, passenger, all)
in a few seconds is brand new and makes these crossovers suitable to every listening condition.
Another listening problem which derives from the CAR compartment asymmetry is the different
direction of the speakers of the two channels with regard to
the listening point. The biggest angulation of the channel
which is closer to the listener changes frequency response
according to surface and to membrane size.
HFC®(High Frequency Contour) system totally
superimposes the channels sound to the listening point.
Thanks to this technology and to TAD®, HERTZ MILLE
systems are completely different from all you have been
listening to so far.

Car is one of the most complex, difficult surroundings for musical reproduction. Every car
compartment has its special sound, demands specifically designed installation projects and involves
various problems: the relation between direct sound and reflected sound, the speakers position and
their distance and angulation with regard to the listening point. The solutions to these problems are
sometimes contrasting and difficult, they need expensive investments and complex installations.
When designing MILLE line speakers, HERTZ only aimed at state-of-the-art performance, without
any economic or structural compromises.
In order to achieve this goal, we designed cutting-edge speakers (in terms of technology, used
materials and acoustic parameters) and developed innovative crossovers in our laboratories; these
filters are extraordinary both in terms of construction and of performance.
The crossover is the heart of every loudspeakers system, it is the device which handles the response
of every component for generating the system sound, the air vibrations in the listening environment.
Frequency response, phase response, interactions among the single components and between the
latter and the listening environment. Components sonic accuracy, interaction easiness and versatility,
reliability. MILLE line new systems have unique crossovers, with very precise, efficient equalisers and
time correction devices, derived from HERTZ engineering staff's long experience.

The possibility to choose among different configurations and MILLE crossovers extreme
versatility forced us to design a switching system easy to use, with long-term reliability, which
could provide first-grade contact. The EJ's, Easy Jumpers, are naturally ergonomical and ensure
colorless acoustic performance.
Crossovers are often the core of spectacular installations. We therefore designed a chassis which
combines vibrations rejection, finishings resistance and thrilling look.
Your eyes can enjoy the filters die-cast aluminium central chassis, their transparent perspex top
cover, the connections controls Shiny finishing, as well as the patient, careful assembly of the
internal components. They are wondeful to look at, as well as extraordinary to listen to.
Manufacturing and components quality is very important. In HERTZ laboratories, we doubted
about every acquired certainty and reconsidered every component as if it were the first time, in
order to set new standards. We measured, listened to, compared the most valued components.
The wonderful Quadralitz inductors used in woofers and midranges crossover networks
provided dynamic, natural, mellow sound.
The polypropylene capacitors, selected among various components manufactured through
different technologies and materials, proved to perform excellently, gaining their place in the
crossovers circuit board.
When we tested the resistors attenuation and damping, we realised there were none in the
market which could meet the best quality standards. Every wire resistor, even the ones wound
with anti-inductive technology, generates an unreal inductance which causes an audible shifting
in the audio range. Metaloxide resistors don't have this problem but are less efficient in
dissipating heat because of their mechanical nature.
To have the best sound and HERTZ products typical reliability, we therefore developed a
special, innovative device which uses three resistors in parallel, with an aluminium heat sink able
to provide unbelievable thermal delta.
The device total dissipation is higher than 25 W.

- Make sure the screws holes are well drilled.
- When you use the grille, its support must be installed betwen baffle and speaker basket.
- Mind baffle and speaker mechanical coupling. Whenever it is possible, put the gasket between
them and eliminate possible air leakage in the basket sides, since it might cause acoustic short
circuit, negatively affecting the system performance.
- We recommend to insulate the doors where the speakers are installed whenever complex
systems are built or very high powers are used.
- Damp metallic and plastic surfaces vibrations with FONOMAT panels or with the special
FONOGEL 100 by AZ audiocomp. Insulate wires and mechanic parts through FONOSEAL 100

When installing MILLE Comp speakers, we suggest that you care for some details:
- In order to ensure the best sound, the speakers of every channel
(Left and Right) should be placed one as far as possible from the
other, be they mounted on front doors, on dashboard or on rear deck.
- Use the tweeter with a hi-pass crossover, whose cut-off frequency
must not be lower than 1.8 kHz, with 12 dB/Oct. slope.
- Install the tweeters in order for their emission axis to cross in the car
compartment center.
- Tweeters should be mounted as high as the
listeners' face and be as far as the woofer is from it.
It is usually good to install them in the rearview mirror
triangle or on the windscreen pillar.
- Fix speakers with all
the screws given with them, gradually
and simultaneously fastening them.

The tweeter can be used in different configurations since it is possible to choose the best Q for
one's system by changing the rear acoustic chamber. The chambers simulate sealed box
configuration and they are filled with natural, non-woven absorbing material for the component
best damping. The Small Chamber increases Q factor and makes the tweeter slope sharper; the
Big Chamber makes slope smoother at lower frequencies.

Tuning
After installing the speakers in your car and checking all connections, you need to spend some
time to tune your system, calibrate your amplifier (if you have one) and adjust TAD®Time
Alignment Device and HFC®controls.
If used, the amplifier gain level should be adjusted in order to keep power in a linear functioning
area, without distortion or saturation which might damage the speaker. If the amplifier has a
distortion-detecting device, adjust gain in order for the indicator to switch on only with signals
peak, with the source volume set at three quarters of its range.
MILLE speakers have full, flat response and
don't need any equalisations which might cause
the amplifier saturation or distortion. Avoid to use
loudness or excessive equalisation. If you adjust
frequency response of +3 dB, the amplifier
should supply doubled power in the range you
want to change; this increases the risk of
distortion.
If possible, use the subsonic filter setting cut-off frequency around 25 Hz.

Driver alignment
If the two bridges of the left crossover are set on TAD In/HFC In and the ones of the right
crossover are set on TAD Off/HFC Off, the left channel response is improved with regard to
extension, sensitivity, phase and you get the same FFT as the right channel one. The sound
image the driver perceives is in the center of the virtual stage; tonal accuracy gets colorless,
clearer.

TAD®Time Alignment Device
In standard installations, the different position of Left and Right channels with regard to the
listening point changes the width and the phase of the perceived signal. You lose energy at high
frequencies and the mid-frequency is slightly altered, too: sound is therefore unclear, as well as
image is.

ALL alignment
If the bridges of both crossovers are set on TAD Off/HFC Off, listening is enhanced for everybody
in the car, providing flat frequency response and balanced, colorless imaging.
HFC control can be set in different positions, according to the music you listen to and to your
taste.
If it is on On, you get clearer high frequency response; if it is on Off, sound is more natural.

Passenger alignment
The opposite occurs for the passenger. If the two bridges of the right crossover are set on
TAD In/HFC In and the ones of the left crossovers are set on TAD Off/HFC Off, the right channel
response is improved with regard to extension, sensitivity, phase and you get the same FFT as
the left channel. The sound image the passenger perceives is in the center of the virtual stage;
