Choosing a Location

The replace may be installed in a location that maintains proper

clearances to air conditioning ducts, electrical wiring and plumbing.

Safety, as well as efciency of operation, must be considered when

selecting the replace location. Try to select a location that does not

interfere with room trafc and has adequate ventilation. This re-

place cannot be installed in a high rise at, in a bedroom or in a

bathroom.

CAUTIONS

Due to its high operating temperatures, the appliance

should be located out of trafc & away from furniture and

draperies.

Children and adults should be alerted to the hazards of

the high surface temperature, which could cause burns

or clothing ignition.

Young children should be carefully supervised when they

are in the same room as the appliance.

Clothing or other ammable materials should not be

placed on or near the appliance.

Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing an ap-

pliance must be replaced prior to operating the heater.

Installation and repair should be done by a qualied service

person. The appliance should be inspected before use

and at least annually by a professional service person.

More frequent cleaning may be required due to excessive

lint from carpeting, bedding material, etc. It is imperative

that control compartments, burners and air-circulating

Thank You for choosing a Montigo C-Series Fireplace.

About the 24VF Fireplace:

The 24VF includes an adjustible burner from 18,000 BTU/H to 14,000

BTU/H and a 2 piece ceramic bre logset. The 24VF is rated for

Propane with a maximum input of 18,000 BTU/H and a minimum

input of 14,000 BTU/H.

Important Warranty and Installation Information:

The Montigo warranty will be voided by, and Montigo disclaims any

responsibility for, the following actions:

Modication of the replace and/or components including the

rebox door.

Use of any component part not manufactured or approved by

Montigo in combination with this Montigo replace system.

Installation other than as instructed in this manual.

Consult your local Gas Inspection Branch on installation requirements

for factory-built gas replaces. Installation & repairs should be done

by a qualied contractor.

Installation

When installing a shelf over the top of the replace, the following

guidelines must be adhered to: The minimum clearance from the top

of the replace to a shelf is 8 cm.

Framing

WARNING:

When this appliance is installed directly on carpeting, tile or

any combustible material other than wood ooring, it must

be installed on a metal or wood panel extending the full

width and depth of the appliance.

Clearances

These clearances apply to all dimensions except the framed opening,

where the clearance to combustibles is 0 cm. The 24VF clearances to

combustible materials are:

Top 8 cm

Back 0 cm

Sides 0 cm

Floor 0 cm

Mantle** 31 cm

ble ceiling within the replace enclosure.

Unprotected combustible walls which are perpendicular to the re-

place opening, must fall within the limits outlined in Figure 7.

For protection against freezing temperatures, it is recommended that

outer walls of the chase be insulated with a vapour barrier. This will

reduce the possibility of a cold-air convection current on the replace.

Space Requirements

This heater must not be installed in a conned space or unusually

tight construction unless provisions are made for adequate combus-

tion and ventilation air.

The National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1, denes a conned space

as a space whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU

per hour (4.8 m3 per kw) of the aggregate input rating of all appliances

installed in that space and an unconned space as a space whose

volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per hour (4.8 m3

per kw) of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in that

space. Rooms communicating directly with the space in which all the

appliances are installed, through openings not furnished with doors,

are considered a part of the unconned space.

Example:

If you are installing this replace in a rectangular room which meas-

ures 12' × 15' × 8' in height, that room will have a volume of 1440 cu.

ft. (ft3). If there is no other appliances in the room which consume

oxygen, then the maximum BTU replace which can be installed in

such a room is 28,800 BTU (1440 ft3 ÷ 50 × 1000) The minimum

volume of space in which this replace can be installed is equal

to:

18,000 BTU's / hour ÷ 1000 = 18 kBTU/h

18 kBTU/h × 50 ft3 / kBTU/h = 900 ft3

Installing The Gas Line

1. The gas line must be installed before nishing the 24VF Fireplace.

Propane Gas requires a minimum inlet gas supply pressure of 35

mbar W.C. & a manifold pressure of 24 mbar Provision must also

be made for a 1/8" N.P.T. plugged tapping and be accessible for test

gauge connection immediately upstream of the gas supply controls to

the appliance. The replace gas connection and the main operating

gas valve is located behind the removable brass trim at the bottom of

the unit and need only be attached to the gas line with an approved

tting, as required by the applicable installation codes.

Installation

Note: After gas line is connected, each appliance connection,

valveandvalvetrainmustbe checkedwhileundernormal

operating pressure with either a liquid solution, or leak

detection device, to locate any source of leak. Tighten

any areas where bubbling appears or leak is detected until

bubbling stops completely or leak is no longer detected.

DO NOT use a flame of any kind to test for leaks.

2. The appliance and its individual shutoff valve must be disconnected

from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that

system at test pressures in excess of 3.5 kPa.

3. The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply piping system

by closing its individual manual shutoff valve during any pressure

testing of the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to or

less than 3.5 mbar.

4. Determine that the gas pressure does not exceed 3.5 mbar and/or

check the corresponding minimum inlet ratings. Once the gas ratings

are determined adequate and the system does not leak, then connect

the gas appliance and retest gas pressure for a total system leakage

by meter measuring at the gas valve pressure measuring port. If leaks

are determined, then repair and repeat the pressure test procedure.

5. Turn main gas control pilot knob OFF during any pressure testing.

Test pressure should be equal to or less than 3.5 kPa to prevent dam-

age to control valve.

6. Installation requirements and combustion and ventilation air provi-

sions must conform with local codes.

7.Keep the operating area clear and free of: combustible materials,

gasoline, or any vapours that would be ammable.

8. Never install a replace in a bathroom, recreational vehicle, high

trafc areas, windy or draft areas, or where ammable objects, such

as curtains, furniture or clothing, are less than 1 meter from the front

of the replace.

9. Due to high temperatures, the appliance should be located out

of trafc and away from furniture and draperies.

10. Children and adults should be alerted to the hazard of high

surface temperatures and should stay away to avoid burns or

Do not allow fans to blow directly into the replace. Avoid

any drafts that alter burner ame patterns.

Keep appliance area clear and free from combustion mate-

rials, gasoline and other ammable vapors and liquids.

WARNING:

If the area in which the heater may be operated is smaller

than that dened as an unconned space, or if the building

is one of unusually tight construction, provide adequate

combustion air by one of the methods described in applica-

ble local codes.

Unusually tight construction is dened as construction where:

 Walls and ceilings exposed to the outside atmosphere have a

continuous water vapour retarder with a rating of 1 perm ( 6x 10 -11

kg per pa-sec-m2) or less with openings gasketed or sealed, and

 Weather Stripping has been added on openable windows and

doors, and

 Caulking or sealants are applied to areas such as joints around

window doors and frames, between sole plates and oors, be-

tween wall-ceiling joints, between wall panels, at penetrations for

plumbing, electrical and gas lines, and at other openings.

Association, when painting the replace surrounds, to select and ap-

ply a quality Alkyd sealer prior to the applying of latex paints. This is

to prevent leaching of water from evaporation and causing a brownish

staining effect to paint over coats.

Finishing Around the Fireplace

Combustible mantels and mouldings may be safely installed over the

top and on the front of the replace provided that they do not project

beyond shaded area shown in Figure 6. Side wall clearances are 8

cm. Combustible surrounds may be installed with an 8cm clearance to

the side of the replace as shown in Figure 7.

Fireplace Facing

When selecting the nish material for your replace, it is important

to remember the following: THE BOTTOM GRILL MUST NOT BE

OBSTRUCTED IN ANY WAY - to do so restricts the air supply for

the control compartments and it also prevents access for servic-

ing controls.

The face of the replace may be painted to match the room decor,

provided you use a heat-resistant paint. Decorative facing must not

extend past the replace opening at all, because it will interfere with

the access to retainers for removal of screen door.

Mantels & Surrounds

New technology, to meet consumer and government demands for the

wise use of energy, has prompted us to manufacture many models of

replaces which are hot, fuel and energy efcient.

Please be aware; temperatures over the mantel will rise above nor-

mal room temperature and walls above replace may be hot to touch.

We recommend careful consideration be given to the effects of

elevated mantel temperatures which may be in excess of product

design, for example: candles, plastic or pictures. This can cause

melting, deformation, discoloration or premature failure of T.V. and

radio components.

Removing and Installing

the Door

Take care when removing the screen door, and ensure that the re-

place has been properly cooled before handling the screen door.

Do not attempt to remove the door when hot.

Removing the Door:

Remove the screen door by lifting it up by the two door tabs on the

bottom of the door. Swing out the bottom of the door si it clears the

bottom door rail, as illustrated in gure 8a.

Caution:

■ The screen door must be installed prior to oper-

ating the heater.

Cautions:

■ If logs are not placed properly, excessive sooting

will result.

■ The surface of the logs will crack due to the heat from

the ames. This is a normal occurance.

■ The use of ember material is strictly prohibited.

Installing the Logset

Installing the Logs:

The 24VF is supplied with a two-piece bre logset. The logset is very

fragile and must be handled very carefully.

1. Remove the screen door as shown in gure 8a.

2. To install the logs, place the rear log in place on the rear log rest.

Ensure that the log is centered in place as shown below. Place the

front log in place on the front logrest and center it in place.

3. Re-install the screen door before operating the replace.

If there is any evidence of carbon or blackening on the logs

from direct contact with the re, they may be installed incor-

rectly. Refer to the illustration and correct immediately.

Re-Installing the Door:

Install the screen door by aligning the top edge in place underneath

the heat bafe. Slide the door up and then rest it down into place

behind the lower door rail, as shown below.

• DO NOT use any tools to turn valve. Only use your hand to turn valve.

• DO NOT try to x anything yourself. Call a certied gas technician. Any attempt to repair may result in a re or explosion and will void warranty.

• DO NOT operate this heater if any part has been under water.

• DO NOT use this heater for burning trash or cooking.

WARNING:Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service or maintenance can cause injury,

property damage, or loss of life. Refer to this manual. Installation and service must be

performed by a qualied installer, certied gas technician, or the gas supplier.

CAUTION: READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY

FOR FUTURE REFERENCES

Open a window an inch or two for fresh air when us-

ing this heater.

WARNING: When used without fresh air circulation

the heater may produce carbon monoxide: an odour-

less poisonous gas.

This heater shall not be installed in a conned space unless provisions are

provided for adequate combustion and ventilation air. The National Fuel Gas

Code denes a conned space as a space whose volume is less than 50

cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per hour (4.8 m3 per KW) of the aggregate input

rating of all appliances installed in that space and an unconned space as

a space whose volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per

hour (4.8 m3 per kW) of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed

in that space. Rooms communicating directly with the space, in which the

appliances are installed, through openings not furnished with doors, are

considered part of the unconned space.

That is to say, add up the BTU of all gas appliances in the room and then

compare to room’s size so as to accept 1000 BTU for each 50 cubic feet

of area. Calculate the total cubic feet of the room derived by the product of

(length x width x height). For example, a room with 8 foot ceilings with 10

foot by 15 foot area has a cubic volume of 1200 cubic feet (8x10x15). Divide

this cubic volume by 50 cubic feet/ 1000 BTU and the result (1200/50) of 24

represents the accumulated BTU capacity in thousands for this room size.

If the result is greater than the accumulated BTU of all the appliances in

the room then the room is an unconned space and qualies for unvented

heater installation. If the result is less than the accumulated BTU of all the

appliances in the room then the room is a conned space and the unvented

heater should not be installed in such a small room.

This heater shall not be installed in a room with unusually tight construction

as dened as follows:

• Walls and ceilings exposed to the outside atmosphere have a continu-

ous water vapour retarder with a rating of 1 perm or openings gasketed or

sealed, and

• Weather stripping has been added on operable windows and doors, and

• Caulking and sealants are applied to areas such as joints around window

and door frames, between sole plates and oors, between wall-ceiling joints,

WARNING: If the area in which the heater may be operating is smaller than

ventilation air by one of the methods described in the National Fuel Gas Code

or as described by local codes.

DO NOT use a blower insert, heat exchanger insert or other accessory not

approved for use with this heater.

This replace is equipped with a pilot light safety sensor O.D.S. (Oxygen

Depletion Sensor) designed to shut off the heater if there is not enough fresh

air available. DO NOT relight the pilot until you provide fresh air from the

outside. To relight turn the control valve to the lowest level of BTU (6,000). If

the stove still does not light, have it serviced.

DO NOT use this appliance if any part has been under water. Immediately call

a qualied service technician to inspect the heater and to replace any part of

the control system and any gas control which has been under water.

WARNING: DO NOT TAMPER WITH PILOT LIGHT

SAFETY SYSTEM!

Carbon monoxide poisoning may lead to

death.

Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble the u with headache,

dizziness, and/or nausea. If you have these signs the heater may not be work-

ing properly. GET FRESH AIR AT ONCE! Then have the heater serviced.

Some people-pregnant women, people with heart or lung disease, anemia,

those under the inuence of alcohol, or those at high altitudes are more af-

fected by carbon monoxide than others.

CAUTION: When burning, the exterior of the replace

may have a high surface temperature. Keep children

out of the replace area to avoid burns or clothing ig-

nition. Young children should be carefully supervised

when they are in the same room with the appliance.

C. Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas control knob.

Never use tools. If the knob will not push in or turn by hand,

don't try to repair it, call a qualied service technician. Force

or attempt to repair may result in a re or explosion.

D. Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water.

Immediately call a qualied service technician to inspect the

appliance and to replace any part of the control system, and

any gas control which has been under water.

A. This appliance has a pilot which must be lit by hand. When

lighting the pilot, follow these instructions exactly.

B. BEFORE LIGHTING smell all around the appliance area for

gas. Be sure to smell next to the oor because some gas is

heavier than air and will settle on the oor.

What To Do If You Smell Gas:

 Do not try to light any appliance.

 Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone

in your building.

 Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbour's

phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions.

 If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the Fire De-

1. Flip down the lower grill.

2. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise

to "Off". Do not force.

3. Flip up the lower grill.

1. STOP! Read the safety information above on this label.

2. Flip down the lower grill.

3. Push in gas control knob and turn clockwise to "OFF."

4. Wait ve (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Smell for gas,

including near the oor. If you then smell gas, STOP! Follow

"B" in the safety information above on this label. If you don't

smell gas, go to the next step.

5. Locate pilot burner (See illustration at right.) and follow

steps below.

6. Turn knob on gas control counterclockwise to "PI-

LOT."

7. Push in gas control knob completely and hold. Light with

Piezo Igniter button. Continue to hold the control knob in for

about (1) minute after the pilot is lit. Release the knob and it

will pop back up. Pilot should remain lit. If it goes out repeat

steps 3 through 8.

 If knob does not pop up when released. Stop and immedi-

ately call your service technician or gas supplier.

 If the pilot will not stay lit after several tries, turn the gas

control knob to "OFF" and call your service technician or

gas supplier.

8. Push in gas control knob and turn counterclockwise

adjusting the burner to the desired ame level '1' to '5'.

9. Flip up the lower grill.

CAUTIONS

Fireplace gas control must be in the “OFF” position and

pilot and main burners extinguished when cleaning ap-

pliance with a vacuum.

Doors and logs can get very hot. Handle only when

convenience a 1/8" manifold pressure tap is supplied on the gas

valve for a test gauge connection. See Figure 10.

For Propane Gas this appliance requires a minimum inlet pres-

sure of 35 mbar W.C. and a manifold pressure of 10" W.C.

Always keep the replace area clear and free of combustible

materials, as well as gasoline and other ammable vapours and

liquids.

Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water. Imme-

diately call a qualied service technician to inspect the appliance

and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control

which has been under water.

Burner Adjustment

The 24VF is equipped with an adjustable burner, allowing you to raise

or lower the ames.

1. Light the pilot as per the lighting instructions.

2. To raise the ame height, turn the black knob (located behind the

lower grill) counterclockwise, from '1' to '5'.

3. To lower the ame height, turn clockwise, from '5' to '1'.

Cleaning

When the replace is rst activated, there may be some smoking.

This is a normal condition, and is the result of burning of protective

coatings on new metal.

Use a vacuum cleaner or whisk broom to keep the control com-

partment, burner, and rebox free from dust and lint.

Logs may be cleaned periodically with a vacuum to remove soot

or other contaminates.

Pilot Burner Adjustment

1. Locate Pilot Adjustment Screw. (See gure 11.)

2. Adjust pilot screw to provide properly sized ame as shown in

gure 12).

3. After installing or servicing, leak test with a soap solution with

main burner on. Coat pipe and tubing joints, gasket etc. with soap

solution. Bubbles indicate leaks. Tighten any areas where the

bubbles appear until the bubbling stops completely.

WARNING:

Do not use a blower insert or heat exchanger insert, it is

not approved for use with this replace. Avoid any drafts

that alter burner ame patterns.

Do not use accessories not approved for use with this heater.

Cleaning the Oxygen

Depletion Sensor (ODS)

The most common problem with the vent-free replace is a dirty

ODS.The symptoms of a dirty ODS can be any of the following:

A. Pilot will not stay lit.

B. Stove runs for a little while and goes out completely, including

pilot.

The cleaning process is a very simple procedure. You will need

a can of compressed air (as used for cleaning computers). This

is available at hardware and computer stores, and is sometimes

labelled as a "duster". Do NOT use an air compressor, as the air

from a compressor usually contains oil. The correct product usu-

ally has a small straw that connects to the can to aim the air.

Cleaning the ODS Sensor

(Must be performed by a certied gas technician):

1. Locate the pilot assembly on your stove.

2. Turn on the gas valve on the stove to the off position and let the

stove cool down.

3. Locate the ODS intake hole (as shown below) and blow the hole

out. Use several blasts of the air to get all the dust. (Note: the as-

sembly shown below is an LP assembly. The natural gas version

has some minor differences)

4. Your stove should now operate normally.

5. If it does not, in some extreme cases, the ODS can be so clogged

that it is necessary to disconnect the gas supply leading to the

pilot tube. You must use one 7/16" wrench to hold the ODS and

another to remove the nut. (see below) Blow into the tube from

the nut end. If you are required to do this, you must leak test the

nut after reconnecting by using a 50/50 solution of dish soap and

water around the nut area. If you see bubbles when holding the

pilot button depressed, tighten the nut.

6. NEVER insert any objects into either the ame hole or intake

hole. The ODS is a precision instrument and if damaged, will not

CORRECTIVE ACTION

• Push the knob in at "PILOT" position and spark

piezo ignitor for at least 10 seconds. If pilot does

not light, repeat 2 or 3 more times. If pilot still does

not light call a certied technician.

• Bleed air from line, eliminate draft; make sure gas

is going to pilot.

• Ventilate room and let stove burn for a while.

• Ventilate room and stop using odor causing

products while stove is turned on.

The Warranty

Montigo DelRay Corp. warrants the Montigo Gas Appliance to be free from defects in materials and workmanship at the time of manufacture. On the Montigo,

there is a ten-year warranty on the ﬁrebox and its components, a ﬁve-year warranty on the main burner and pilot burner, and a one-year warranty on the gas

control valve and ﬁbre logs. Screen, plated/painted ﬁnishes, and refractory lining are exempt.

Remedy And Exclusions

The coverage of this Warranty is limited to all components of the Gas Appliance manufactured by Montigo DelRay Corp..

If the components of the Gas Appliance covered by this Warranty are found to be defective within the time frame stated (see Montigo DelRay Corp. right of inves-

tigation outlined below). Montigo DelRay Corp. will, at its option, replace or repair defective components of the Gas Appliance manufactured by Montigo DelRay

Corp. at no charge, and will also pay for reasonable labour costs incurred in replacing or repairing components. If repair or replacement is not commercially

practical, Montigo DelRay Corp. will, at its option, refund the purchase price of the Montigo Gas Appliance.

This Warranty covers only parts and labour as provided above. In no case shall Montigo DelRay Corp. be responsible for materials, components, or construction

which are not manufactured or supplied by Montigo DelRay Corp., or for the labour necessary to install, repair or remove such materials, components or construc-

tion. All replacement or repair components will be shipped F.O.B. the nearest Montigo DelRay Corp. factory.

Qualiﬁcations To The Warranty

The Gas Appliance Warranty outlined above is further subject to the following qualiﬁcations:

(1) The Gas Appliance must be installed in accordance with Montigo DelRay Corp. installation instructions and local building codes. The Warranty on this

Montigo Gas Appliance covers only the component parts manufactured by Montigo DelRay Corp.. The use of components manufactured by others with this

Montigo Gas Appliance could create serious safety hazards, may result in the denial of certiﬁcation by recognized national safety agencies, and could be

in violation of local building codes. This warranty does not cover any damages occurring from the use of any components not manufactured or supplied by

Montigo DelRay Corp.

(2) The Montigo Gas Appliance must be subjected to normal use. The Gas Appliances are designed to burn gas only. Burning conventional ﬁreplace fuels such

as wood, coal or any other solid fuel will cause damage to the Gas Appliance, will produce excessive temperatures and will result in a ﬁre hazard.

Limitations On Liability

It is expressly agreed and understood that Montigo DelRay Corp. sole obligation, and purchaser's exclusive remedy under this Warranty, under any other warranty,

expressed or implied, or in contract, tort or otherwise, shall be limited to replacement, repair, or refund, as speciﬁed above.

In no event shall Montigo DelRay Corp. be responsible for any incidental or consequential damages caused by defects in its products, whether such damage

occurs or is discovered before or after replacement or repair, and whether or not such damage is caused by Montigo DelRay Corp. negligence. Some states do

not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you. The duration of any implied

warranty with respect to this Montigo Gas Appliance is limited to the duration of the foregoing warranty. Some states do not allow limitation on how long an implied

warranty lasts, so the above may not apply to you.

Investigation Of Claims Against Warranty

Montigo DelRay Corp. reserves the right to investigate any and all claims against this Warranty and to decide upon method of settlement.

Montigo DelRay Corp. Are Not Responsible For Work Done Without Written Consent

Montigo DelRay Corp. shall in no event be responsible for any warranty work done without ﬁrst obtaining Montigo DelRay Corp. written consent.

Dealers Have No Authority To Alter This Warranty

Montigo DelRay Corp. employees and dealers have no authority to make any warranties nor to authorize any remedies in addition to or inconsistent with those

stated above.

How To Register A Claim Against Warranty

In order for any claim under this Warranty to be valid, Montigo DelRay Corp. must be notiﬁed of the claimed defect in writing or by telephone, as soon as reasonably

possible after the defect is discovered. Claims against this Warranty in writing should include the date of installation, and a description of the defect.
