1 Install the Operating System
CAUTION: Do not add optional hardware or third-party devices to your computer until the operating
system is successfully installed. Doing so may cause errors and may prevent the operating system from
installing properly. Once the automatic installation has begun, DO NOT TURN OFF THE COMPUTER
UNTIL THE PROCESS IS COMPLETE. Turning off the computer during the installation process might
damage the software that runs the computer or prevent its proper installation.
NOTE: Be sure there is a 10.2-cm (4-inch) clearance at the back of the unit and above the monitor to
permit the required airflow.
The first time the computer is turned on, the operating system is automatically installed. This takes
approximately 10 minutes, depending on the operating system being installed. Carefully read and follow
the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
NOTE: If the computer shipped with more than one operating system language on the hard drive, the
installation process could take up to 60 minutes.
If the computer was not shipped with a Microsoft operating system, some portions of this documentation
do not apply. For complete operating system installation and configuring instructions, refer to the
operating system documentation. Additional information is available in online help.
Microsoft security updates are available on the Microsoft Web site.
Downloading Microsoft Windows Updates
1. To set up your Internet connection, click Start > Internet Explorer and follow the instructions on
the screen.
2. Once an Internet connection has been established, click the Start button.
3. Select the All Programs menu.
4. Click on the Windows Update link. The Windows Update screen appears.
Click view available updates and make sure all critical updates are selected. Click the Install
button and follow the instructions on the screen.
It is recommended that you install all of the critical updates and service packs.
5. Click view available updates and make sure all critical updates are selected.
6. Click the Install button and follow the instructions on the screen.
7. After the updates have been installed, Windows will prompt you to reboot the computer. Be sure
to save any files or documents that you may have open before rebooting. Then select Yes to reboot
the computer.
Installing or Upgrading Device Drivers
When installing optional hardware devices after the operating system installation is complete, you must
also install the drivers for each of the devices.
Downloading Microsoft Windows Updates 1

Obtain the latest support software, including support software for the operating system from
http://www.hp.com/support. Select your country and language, select Download drivers and
software, enter the model number of the computer, and press Enter.
Customizing the Monitor Display
If you wish, you can select or change the monitor model, refresh rates, screen resolution, color settings,
font sizes, and power management settings. To do so, right-click on the Windows Desktop, then click
Personalize to change display settings. For more information, refer to the online documentation
provided with the graphics controller utility or the documentation that came with your monitor.
2 Chapter 1 Install the Operating System

Microsoft System Restore
Microsoft Windows Vista includes a feature that allows you to restore your computer configuration to a
previous time when a current software problem did not exist. The feature does this by creating a restore
point where it records the computer settings at that time and date.
When a new program is installed, the operating system automatically creates a restore point before it
adds the new software. You can also manually set restore points.
If you experience a problem that you think may be due to software on your computer, use System
Restore to return the computer to a previous restore point.
NOTE: Always use this System Restore procedure before using the System Recovery program.
To start a System Restore:
1. Close all open programs.
2. Click the Windows Start Button.
3. Choose All Programs.
4. Choose Accessories.
5. Choose System Tools.
6. Click System Restore.
7. Click Next.
8. Follow the on-screen instructions.
To manually add restore points:
1. Close all open programs.
2. Click the Windows Start Button.
3. Choose Control Panel.
4. Click System and Maintenance, then click System.
5. Click System protection.
6. Under Automatic restore points, select the disk that you want to create a restore point for.
7. Click Create.
8. Follow the on-screen instructions.
For more information about software restore points:
1. Click the Windows Start Button.
2. Click Help and Support. The Help and Support Center displays.
3. Type system restore into the Search box, and then click Search.
System Recovery
After you have tried the previously mentioned methods of repairing your computer, you can run a System
Recovery as a last resort to reinstall the factory-shipped operating system, software programs, and
hardware drivers.
Microsoft System Restore 3

System Recovery — Completely erases and reformats the hard disk drive — this includes deleting all
data files you have created. System Recovery reinstalls the operating system, programs, and drivers.
However, you must reinstall any software that was not installed on the computer at the factory. This
includes software that came on CDs included in the computer accessory box, and software programs
you installed since your purchase.
Additionally, you have to choose from the following methods for performing a System Recovery:
Recovery Image — Run the recovery from a recovery image stored on your hard disk drive. The
recovery image is a file that contains a copy of the original factory-shipped software. To perform a
System Recovery from the recovery image on your hard disk drive, see Running System Recovery from
the Hard Disk Drive on page 5.
NOTE: The recovery image uses a portion of the hard disk drive that cannot be used for data storage.
Recovery Discs — Run the System Recovery from a set of recovery discs (CDs or DVDs) that you
create from files stored on your hard disk drive. To create recovery discs, perform the procedure in the
next section.
Creating Recovery Discs
Complete the procedure described in this section to create a set of recovery discs from the recovery
image stored on your hard disk drive. This image contains the operating system and software program
files that were originally installed on your computer at the factory.
You can create only one set of recovery discs for your computer. The recovery discs you create can
only be used with your computer.
After creating the recovery discs, you can delete the recovery image if you would like to make extra
space available on your hard disk drive.
NOTE: Do not delete the recovery image unless you have made recovery CDs or DVDs.
Choosing Recovery Disc Media
There are several advantages to using DVDs instead of CDs when creating recovery discs:
●DVDs have greater capacity than CDs, so there are fewer discs to record and store.
●DVD recovery discs take less time to create than CD recovery discs.
To create recovery discs, your computer must have a CD or DVD writer drive, or other drive that can
write to CDs or DVDs.
The number of discs in the recovery disc set depends on your computer model. The program that creates
the discs tells you the number of blank discs needed to make the set. The process takes some time to
verify that the information written on the disc is correct.
You can quit the process at any time. The next time you run the program, it begins where you left off.
To create Recovery discs:
1. Close all open programs.
2. Click the Windows Start Button.
3. Click All Programs.
4. Click PC Help & Tools.
5. Click Recovery Disc Creator.
4 Chapter 1 Install the Operating System

6. The Recovery Disc Creator window appears.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions. Label each disc as you make it (for example, Recovery 1,
Recovery 2).
Store the Recovery discs in a safe place.
System Recovery Options

8. Insert the next disc if prompted.
9. When the Recovery Manager finishes, remove the last disc.
10. Click Finish to restart the computer.
11. After the computer restarts, a series of startup screens appears. To proceed with the initial Windows
Vista setup, you must answer a few questions.
