Quidway® NetEngine 40 Series Universal
Switching Router Flexible Plug-in Card Series
Overview
The Quidway® NetEngine 40 universal switching router (USR) series (abbreviated as NE40)
provides a variety of flexible cards. The flexible card consists of line processing unit (LPUF)
and PIM card. The LPUF is designed for processing and encapsulation of protocols at the link
layer, data stream classification and packet filtering as well as control of packet processing.
The PIM card provides various physical interfaces such as GE, FE, E1, CE1, E3, T3, POS and
ATM. A LPUF has 2 slots, where 1 or 2 PIM cards can be located. It allows mixed insertion of
different types of PIM sub-cards.

Ethernet PIM card (including GE and FE) is divided into routing board (WAN board) and
switching board (LAN board) depending on functionality. As a line board of L3 switching type,
the switching board has L2/L3 features of a L3 switch. It provides Ethernet interfaces that are
always used for convergence of a MAN. So it has the alias of L2 board or LAN board. Routing
board, as a line board of router type, provides more powerful IP/MPLS route forwarding
function, QoS capability, multicast function and more MPLS VPN features compared with
switching board. Ethernet interfaces provided by a routing board are used for interconnection
of WANs, so the routing board earns the name of WAN board. A WAN board can be used in
the backbone layer of Internet.
With flexible cards, NE40 is able to provide high-density WAN and LAN interfaces and make a
network much more flexible. Furthermore, the flexible card technology delivers solutions with
low cost and individuating features to meet the requirements of middle-/small-sized
enterprises. Currently NE40 flexible cards are widely accepted by operators and enterprises.
