IHP150 INTEGRATED HEAT PUMPS
Please remove all packing materials, MOST IMPORTANTLY those
inside the air-discharge outlet at the top of the unit, prior to
commissioning.
Cold air-discharge ducting (if used or required) should not exceed
2m in total length without an additional extract fan.

PREFACE
-This manual includes all of the necessary information related
to installation, operation and maintenance of your Hydra
Therm Integrated Heat Pump (“The Product”). Please read
this manual carefully before attempting to install and
operate this product.
-All plumbing installations must comply with the current
specifications of SANS10254 and local by-laws and must be
performed by a qualified and appropriately licensed plumber.
-All electrical installations must comply with the current
specifications of SANS10142-1 and local by-laws and where
relevant must be performed by a qualified and appropriately
licensed electrician.
-Neither HydraTherm (Pty) Ltd nor its authorized distributors
or resellers will be held liable in the event of damage to
property, injury or death as a result of failure to comply with
the regulations for the plumbing and electrical installation of
this product as stipulated by law and/or as printed in this
manual.
-Installers should explain to the end-users the relevant
operating procedures for the Integrated Heat Pump and

procedures to be followed in the event of failure or
maintenance being required.
-Operating manuals are updated from time to time and this
will be done without notice to existing customers. If you
require an updated manual or a copy in event of the loss of
the original, please contact Hydra Therm or your authorized
reseller.
-Failure to adhere to any guideline or instruction in this
manual may void any warranty that is express or implied by
law or otherwise.
PRECAUTIONS FOR END-USERS AND INSTALLERS
1. This product must be installed in a suitably ventilated room
or space and should be protected from rain and other
elements.
2. The unit should be installed on a flat, solid surface of suitable
design and structure to support the weight of the
components and the water contained in the tank. This unit
MUST be installed in the VERTICAL or UPRIGHT orientation.

3. Power to the auxiliary heating element should be provided by
a dedicated circuit breaker on the electrical distribution
board.
4. Immediately isolate power in the event of detection of excess
noise emission or the smell of refrigerant or chemicals or
burning components.
5. Never attempt to repair or maintain the unit yourself, always
appoint a qualified and manufacturer-approved contractor.
6. Never paint or spray flammable aerosols or corrosion
inhibitors onto or near the product.
7. Shut-off the heat pump in the event of ambient temperatures
below zero degrees Celsius or above 43 degrees Celsius. You
may activate the auxiliary heating element during
environmental conditions envisaged above.
8. Do not allow children under 12 years to adjust or operate the
product.
9. Never touch or tamper with the electrical or plumbing devices
connected to the product. Serious injury or death can occur
due to component failure as a result of tampering.

10. The recommended set-point
temperature of the product is not
more than 55 degrees Celsius for
both the heat pump and auxiliary
heating element* (*if used).
Beware: hot water can cause
permanent physical harm.
11. Always test the temperature at the point of use before
exposing your entire body to the hot water.
WARNING –MOVING PARTS AND ELECTRIC SHOCK
When operating, this product has moving parts in the form of a
vortex fan assembly. Never attempt to maintain or operate the
unit when the safety covers are removed. Do not insert fingers,
hair or any objects into the fan grille.

You are also at risk of electric shock in the event of the product
operating with the safety covers/panels removed.

OPERATIONAL FUNCTIONS OF THE HEAT PUMP
Compressor Start Delay
If the product is re-started
from a running state the unit
will delay the start of the
compressor for 3 minutes as
a safety precaution
Ambient Temperature
Protection
If the ambient temperature
exceeds a safe operating limit
the product will automatically
shut down
Defrosting
The unit will automatically
defrost if necessary for
periods of 2 to 10 minutes
Overheating Protection
If the water temperature
reaches 75 OC, a motor
thermal protection device will
shut the product down. This
device must be manually
reset.
Fuse Cut-Out
If the overheating protector
fails at 85OC a fuse will
permanently cut power to
the product until the fuse is
manually replaced.

PLUMBING INSTRUCTIONS
Please note: All instructions for the plumbing of this water heater
must be read in conjunction with SANS10254 (as amended) and
all plumbing work, including the installation of any and all valves
must comply with SANS10254 (as amended).
WARNING
The temperature and pressure safety (T/P) valve supplied with
the water heater must be mounted on the water heater at the
port labelled “T/P Safety Valve” before use.
1. A suitable pressure valve and an expansion control valve
(which may be combined in one unit) must be fitted in
the installation.
1.1 Water may drip from the discharge pipe of the
expansion control valve. This pipe MUST be
left open to atmosphere.
1.2 Hydra Therm recommends the use of a
combined pressure control and expansion
relief valve rated to less than or equal to the
rated pressure of the T/P Safety Valve and the
rated pressure of the water heater as stated
on the water heater’s rating label. The chosen
valves installed must be SABS approved.

1.3 The installation of the pressure control and
expansion relief/control valve must comply
with SANS10254 and provide for balanced
pressure of hot and cold water to each point of
use.
2. The drain-cock supplied with this water heater must be
installed at the port marked “water inlet.” Water may
be drained from the water heater by opening the screw
on the drain-cock. Suitable precautions must be taken
to prevent water damage whilst draining the water
heater. For example, a pipe suitable for hot water may
be installed to divert the draining water to a suitable
location where no damage or personal injury may result.
3. The discharge pipes connected to the expansion control
valve and the temperature and pressure safety (T/P)
valve are to be of metal and installed in a continuously
downward direction, in a frost-free ambient with the
outlets being open to the atmosphere. Refer to
SANS10254 for minimum pipe diameters.
4. A control device for the heat exchanger on this water
heater has been factory-fitted and its operation is
described under “Resetting the Heat Pump Over Heating
Protector” on page 19 of this manual.
5. Suitable vacuum breakers must be installed in
compliance with SANS10254.

6. A suitable geyser tray must be installed in compliance
with SANS10254.
7. A suitable pipe must be connected to the “condensate
drain” port and installed in a continuously downward
direction to drain condensate away from the heat pump
safely so as to prevent any water damage from
occurring.
8. Please refer to the plumbing installation diagram on
page 16 of this manual for further instructions, which are
to be read in conjunction with SANS10254 (as amended).

PLUMBING INSTALLATION DIAGRAM
Installations must be performed by qualified, PIRB registered
plumbers and done in accordance with the current version of
SANS 10254 and SANS 10142 and all local by-laws where
applicable. E&OE.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
POWER
When mains power is connected and turned on the heat pump
display will activate. If the running indicator light is off, the
controller is programmed to turn off. Pressing the Power On/Off
button once will activate the heat pump and the red light will
illuminate indicating the unit is in heating mode.

OPERATING MODES
The South African version of the product only caters for the energy
saving mode identified by a green light. Since the auxiliary heating
element can only be activated manually, changing the heat pump
operating mode will not have any effect. The only mode of
operation is energy saving (heat pump only).
ADJUSTING SET-POINT TEMPERATURE
The actual water temperature in the tank is indicated on the right
hand side of the red LCD display. The target or set-point
temperature is indicated on the left hand side of the red LCD
display.
The target/set-point temperature can be adjusted up or down
simply by pressing the UP or DOWN arrow buttons on either side
of the “M” mode button.
AUTOMATIC SET-POINT REGULATION
The heat pump is defaulted to automatically adjust the water
temperature to track changes in ambient temperature by a
constant differential. This increasing the energy saving capabilities
of the product. The user can override this function by adjusting
the temperature set-point as described above. To resume
automatic regulation, press and hold the “MODE” button for 10
seconds.

RESETTING THE HEAT PUMP OVERHEATING PROTECTOR
To reset the 75 OC motor thermal cut-out, open the “Over heat
protector” cover and press the red reset button. The product will
then resume normal operation.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
The product is equipped to display a series of codes on the LCD
display depending on the fault occurring. The error codes and
their faults and solutions are tabled on the following page. Please
contact Hydra Therm in the event of your unit displaying an error
code as contemplated. Do not attempt DIY repairs.
