Introduction
Congratulations! In choosing I/OMagic’s MagicSurfer 56K Internal PCI modem, you
have chosen to equip your personal computer with one of the best high-speed
fax/modem in the market today. Your MagicSurfer 56K Internal PCI modem utilizes a
Host Signal Processing Modem chip (HSP Modem), which implements ITU-T V.90
protocols and 56K technology. That translates into one of the fastest, most powerful
fax/modem today over analog telephone lines.
We at I/OMagic understand that the Internet has made people more aware of modems
than ever before. That is the reason why we have brought out the MagicSurfer 56K
Internal PCI modem. The MagicSurfer 56K Internal Modem will make you appreciate
the importance of baud rates and understand what seems fast yesterday will be snail
pace today.
In the past analog modems have traditionally used a digital signal processor chip to
provide the processing power required to perform telecommunication functions. The
Conventional DSP modem has also included a memory chip for processing data, a
universal asynchronous receiver and transmitter and a controller chip. MagicSurfer
56K Internal PCI has streamlined all of this. The HSP software solution, operating
within the Microsoft Windows environment, reduces the need for hardware
components by becoming part of the host computer’s system software. This results in
the HSP solution requiring 70% less power to operate and 75% less real estate on the
modem board.
This product includes high-speed data and fax capabilities with the ability to receive
data from compatible central sites at speeds up to 56K bps. The MagicSurfer 56K
Internal PCI modem achieves this breakthrough speed by communicating directly to
the central site office. That process eliminates the overhead of analog to digital
conversion processes needed by V.34 modems (See Appendix A for information on
the 56K solution).
The MagicSurfer 56K Internal PCI modem delivers the right combination of
performance and power, while maintaining the most affordable solution to your
communication needs. Experience a new level of productivity with the MagicSurfer
56K Internal PCI modem. I/OMagic’s goal is to give you the best connection rates
while maintaining the best support in the industry, and MagicSurfer 56K Delivers!

Hardware Installation
To install the MagicSurfer 56K Internal PCI modem in your computer, follow these
steps:
1 Turn off your computer, monitor, and other peripherals
You may also need to disconnect your power cord and other devices from the rear
panel of your computer.
Electronic components are sensitive to static electricity. To
prevent damage, discharge any static electricity from your body
by touching any known grounded metal surface, such as your
computer’s chassis, before and during installation of hardware.
2 Remove the computer cover
Locate and remove any screws that hold the cover in place. Gently remove the cover,
leaving the base of the unit in place. You may need to wiggle the cover back and
forth to loosen it. Do not use excessive force.
Your computer cover may be different that the computer cover
shown above. The screws may not be located at the back of
your computer. Some covers have screws on the side of the
computer. Tower cases also have different location for the
screws. Refer to your computer’s manual if you need specific
instructions on how to remove the cover.

5 Install the MagicSurfer 56K into the PCI slot
Place the card over the expansion slot with the mounting bracket facing the access
slot (the same slot you removed the cover plate from). Carefully align the connector
with the slot and push the card into the slot until it snaps into place. You may need to
use a gentle back-and-forth rocking motion when inserting the card into the slot.
Once you install the card, secure it by replacing the screw you removed with the
expansion slot cover plate.
Double-check all connections, make sure everything is
plugged in correctly and firmly seated before you replace
the cover.

6 Replace your computer’s cover
Reverse the procedure followed when you removed the computer’s cover.
Route all cables inside your computer so that they are not in the way of the cover.
Remember that your computer cover may be different from the
one above. If you need help replacing the computer cover,
refer to your computer’s manual.
7 Turn on your computer, monitor, and other peripherals
Your computer should start up as it normally does. If it
doesn’t, power down your system first and check to make
sure that all your expansion boards are firmly seated and
that all cables, both inside and on the back of the
computer, are properly connected. If you are still having
problems, refer to the troubleshooting section before
calling for help.
