1. Introduction
The ComTech L-Band Satellite Modem operates on the AvL Technologies AAQ system with date rates
from 2.4 Kbps to 9.98 Mbps. This modem supports multiple modulation types such as BPSK, and QPSK to
name a few. The Comtech modem provides support with all externally connected Block Up Converters
(BUCs) and can be configured with and without a BUC power supply, it also provides support for Low-
Noise Block Downconverters (LNBs). This modem can be configured for a frequency between 950 to
2000MHz. The ComTech modem can be integrated into the AvL AAQ system to provide accurate beam
pointing, and Internet and communications services.

4. Operation
4.1. Functional Overview
When properly connected and configured the ComTech modem becomes fully integrated into the AAQ
Controller’s satellite acquisition process. During Acquisition, the modem will exchange information
with the AAQ. The modem’s Eb / No will be used to locate and peak on the desired satellite.
4.1.1. Acquisition Process
Figure 6 - Acquire Command
1. Power up the antenna and modem
2. Command the antenna to acquire
3. The AAQ will read the compass then proceed to the first scan point
4. The antenna detects a lock from the modem and stops
The Modem has detected the satellite carrier
The AAQ has stopped its scan
5. The AAQ will coarse peak back to the signal
This is the initial coarse peak that will move through the entire beam
6. Once coarse peaking has been completed, fine peaking will begin
This fine peaks the signal using small, slow movements
7. AAQ will stop movement
The AAQ has enabled transmit on the modem
8. The Modem will log into the network and be ready to send traffic
